Degrees

The MTSU Department of Aerospace offers the Master of Science (M.S.) in Aviation Administration, with concentrations in Aviation Management, Aviation Education, or Aviation Safety and Security Management. Students can now complete any of the master’s concentrations online, as well as on campus.

Aviation Management Concentration

Current students include pilots, air traffic controllers, maintenance staff, engineers and the majority have a license/professional education. We also welcome students with a military background. This Air Safety Management MSc programme is tailored towards those working who cannot attend regular university schedules.

This course is compatible with The MoD's Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS) - an initiative to promote lifelong learning amongst members of the UK Armed Forces. If you are/have been a member of the UK Armed Forces, you could be entitled to financial support to take this course.

Airlines, airports and other aviation companies are mostly led by license holders, safety officers, pilots, aircraft engineers, air traffic controllers, dispatchers and many more. This means the demand for management knowledge is growing. Our programme gives students the opportunity to freshen their knowledge, learn the latest management techniques and build a lifelong network of peers.

With unexpected events affecting the aviation industry as well as increased competition and technological and regulatory changes, every organisation needs a core of up-to-date safety and risk managers ready to succeed into leadership positions.

The programme is designed to deliver individual success. First initiated by the Honourable Company of Airline Pilots (HCAP) to increase the career opportunities of aircrew, today the programme is recognised as a key resource within the aviation safety industry and as a benchmark for innovation.

As a student you will benefit from learning within modern lecture theatres (equipped with the latest interactive AV systems) and modern IT laboratories.

A dynamic virtual learning environment (Moodle) gives you access to online assessment and communication tools as you study and you can work with specialist School facilities including:

This course gives you a recognised industry qualification, control of your own career and the ability to contribute to air safety management. The course is very flexible and you can study while you work.

At the end of the programme you will have improved your:
-Presentation/speaking skills - through regular opportunities within each module and the project.
-Report writing and analytical skills - through coursework and the project.
-Personal management skills - through the careful use of resources to complete assignments on time.

The successful MSc graduate will have:
-A good understanding of business analysis, crisis, human motivation, and management of the air safety industry.
-A sound understanding for the national and international regulatory and commercial business environment and the ability to prepare a sound business case.
-Knowledge of aspects of accident and incident investigation, human factors, safety risk management.

We explore air safety management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. This means you learn from the former British Airways human resources director in one module, and the industry's crisis management expert in safety or the chief executive officer of a major maintenance facility in another.

The course is based on completing the Induction Workshop plus eight modules over one to five years, which are taught over three-day periods. Teaching takes place across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt. Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air transport related subject, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. From developing new safety measures to social media marketing in the aviation world, students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career.

Students who choose not to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme within the five years, receive a Postgraduate Certificate on successful completion of four modules, including two core modules, or a Postgraduate Diploma on successful completion of eight modules.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Drawing on the School’s research expertise, the MSc in Air Transport Management provides you with a degree that is both intellectually rigorous and up-to-date.

The master program addresses candidates graduated by an bachelor degree due to the following qualifications:

Graduates of the International Degree Course in Aviation Systems Engineering and Management (ILST).
Pilots with a related degree and practical experience.
Graduates with an acceptable degree in related areas like aircraft engineering, maintenance, or air traffic administration plus a practical experience.

Fluency in English is required. Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency with the TOEFL exam (minimum of 220 points computer-based or 560 paper-based) or an equivalent test like the IELTS (at least 6,0). The complete application documents must be submitted not later than August, 31st. Applications must consist of: a registration form, a Curriculum Vitae, a photograph, proof of his or her university degree, the address and telephone number (e-mail address, if available) to which all correspondence should be sent.

Purpose

This programme is specifically designed for:

Students take six taught modules in total (over one year on the full-time course*, or two to three years on the block release part-time course) and complete a research dissertation. This course has been developed to meet the needs of graduates worldwide seeking to gain greater knowledge and experience of the air transport industry, and looking to progress into senior roles in management, operations and commercial planning of airlines, airports, government departments and aviation-related businesses such as aircraft manufacturing, finance and consultancy. It is designed to provide a strong theoretical and analytical basis, coupled with the application of many practical techniques and strategies.

The course builds on the successful series of aviation short courses that have attracted participants from around the globe to the University each year. The Department has a long-established interest in air transport research, consultancy and teaching, having been set up by the renowned aviation academic Professor Rigas Doganis some 40 years ago. The University's association with aviation goes back much further, however, as it was here in the 19th century that Sir George Cayley first demonstrated the principles of flight.

Modules on this course can also be taken as short courses which are not formally assessed. Students who have followed the relevant short course(s) within the last five years may be able to register at a reduced fee to complete the module on an 'assessment only' basis as part of the Master's degree.

Occupational health (OH) nursing is a distinct specialty within the family of public health nursing. OH nurses practice in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

Placements

It is a Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) requirement that you must gain experience in the OH practice setting throughout your studies. This can be achieved through employment in an OH service or as a result of a practice placement undertaken on an unpaid basis. In order that you gain a placement appropriate to your learning needs and personal circumstances. This experience is negotiated and secured by the student.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplemented with blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities and workplace visits.

Teaching consists of formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

This module explores the ethical, legal and professional issues impacting on OH practice.

- Assessing risk 1
This module introduces risk assessment, provides an overview of health and safety legislation and introduces ergonomics.

- Assessing risk 2
This module further develops the skills of risk assessment focusing on physical hazards and food hygiene.

Part-time Graduate Certificate:
Completed over two semesters but within two academic years.

Employability

Graduates of the Workplace Health Management seek employment in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of similar programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

LSBU Employability Services

LSBU is committed to supporting you develop your employability and succeed in getting a job after you have graduated. Your qualification will certainly help, but in a competitive market you also need to work on your employability. Our Employability Service will support you in developing your skills. The OH team work very closely with the employability services of the University in order to assist you in gaining employment within the specialty. LSBU offers a comprehensive Employability Service, with a range of initiatives to complement your studies if needed, including:

- direct engagement from employers who come in to interview and talk to students
- Job Shop and on-campus recruitment agencies to help your job search
- mentoring and work shadowing schemes.

Professional links

The team are proud of their links with the occupational health services of a range of organisations including the military, Surrey Police, Virgin Atlantic Airways, NHS Trusts, and Perkins Engines.

Jo-Anne Kitney, an OH graduate and MD of Kitney Occupational Health and Safety in Brisbane, Queensland, is an honorary senior lecturer. Anne offers Skype lectures, webinars, and career coaching opportunities to our students. Prof Diana Kloss, barrister, employment tribunal judge and Chair of the Council for Work and Health, is also a frequent contributor to our programme. It is envisaged that Chris Packham, MD of Enviroderm, will teach about Skin Protection on the programme this academic year.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplementedwith blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities andworkplace visits.

Teaching includes formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

There is no placement requirement for this course.

Graduates qualify for PhD studies in the areas of the thematic focus areas and in a broad range of other subareas of computer science. Next to this our graduates are also in demand and find jobs in a great variety of industries and companies, such as:

A specialized track about the tension between competition and regulation:
Fair competition is essential for the functioning of markets. Consumers can make better decisions if they are well informed about prices, service conditions, and product quality. Firms will be able to exploit their competencies if they are operating at a level playing field.

At the same time, firms benefit from shielding themselves from competition of their rivals in the market. And being successful may create a monopoly position. It is this tension between competition and regulation that makes a deep analysis of markets both intellectually interesting and practically relevant for corporate strategists and policy makers.

Apply Industrial Organization and Competition Law to business strategies and regulatory policies:
In the 'Competition and Regulation' track, you will learn how to apply insights from Industrial Organization and Competition Law, to business strategies and to regulatory policies. Cases deal with, for example, the lack of competition in certain markets (electricity, telecommunication services) and the response by national governments and the European Union.

This track is closely linked to the Tilburg Law and Economics research center TiLEC.

In these courses, you analyze causes of imperfect competition and identify rules and regulations that ensure fair competition while mitigating possible negative effects on productivity and technological change. You will also learn about the legal aspects, including discussion of the relevant legal concepts and laws.

Career perspectives

This track is advised to students who wish to work for competition authorities (e.g. the Dutch ACM), regulatory bodies, Ministry of Economic Affairs, large consultancy firms (PricewaterhouseCoopers), specialized economic consultancies on competition and regulation (Lexecon, Nera, Oxera), international organizations such as EU and OECD, and economic departments of large firms.
