The Pollution Management option focuses on the interface and interaction between science, technology, and policy in the environment. There is an emphasis on local issues, but these are inescapably set within the context of regional and global developments. We draw on best practice in the UK and Western Europe, applied not only here but also in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.

Aims

In Western Europe and North America, many short-range pollution problems of past decades have been solved, but business and industry find themselves operating in an environment where the public and government demand ever more stringent environmental standards. Other parts of the world might be seen as following some way behind this trend and learning from it, including where examples of acute local and regional pollution remain in a context of a pressing need for rapid socio-economic development. Globalisation is an additional, external source of pressure on every nation to meet the highest environmental standards that are increasingly prevalent elsewhere. In many cases, however, developing countries have an opportunity to learn from our mistakes as well as our successes. In particular, the trend of the past was for environmental protection to be an expensive luxury. Today, it is possible to find a different and more efficient path to a better quality of life for everyone, now and in the future, by protecting the environment in a way that leads simultaneously to an increase in economic prosperity. There is therefore continued growth in demand for graduates with expertise in pollution management:

  • Within the UK and European Union
  • Working from the UK but exporting expertise to other parts of the world
  • World-wide, especially in the rapidly developing economies of Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and in Eastern European and Mediterranean regions having increasing levels of trade and political interaction with the European Union.

Responses to pollution at least must reassure the public it is safe, or allow adaptation to or protection from its effects. A better approach is to control concentrations of a pollutant in the environment, but the best solution is to prevent its formation in the first place.

Integrated Pollution, Prevention and Control is a major development in this area, pioneered in the UK and now led by the European Union, bringing together management, planning, and communication as well as end-of-pipe technological solutions. But this needs to mesh with other kinds of regulatory and voluntary initiatives, especially where non-industrial sources of pollution including transport and agriculture make an important contribution, in more and less developed countries alike.

Content

The Option is divided into six modules, covering all the major areas of environmental concern, and there is a significant interdisciplinary element throughout, reflecting the philosophy of the MSc as a whole. They should not be considered as stand-alone, but should be seen as a closely integrated whole:

Module Aims and Learning Outcomes

Environment and Health

  • To give the student a foundation in chemistry, microbiology and policy basics to understand aspects of environmental management and technology and their impact on health.
  • Describe the main chemical and biological processes important in the physical environment and environmental technology and parameters that define environmental quality.

Air Pollution and Climate Control

  • To familiarise students with how our incomplete but expanding scientific understanding of pollution is translated into policy and practice for Air Pollution & Climate Control management.
  • Be able to integrate understanding of atmospheric chemistry and physics together with biological implications and pollution control technology, with the application of Air Pollution modelling and monitoring for review and assessment of air quality & Climate.

Waste and Resource Management

  • To provide students with an introduction to policies that aim to manage human activities with a focus on waste management to prevent, reduce, or mitigate harmful effects on nature and natural resources.
  • Be able to understand the principal features of UK and EC environmental policies and appreciate from a management point of view the principal waste and resouce related problems today.

Environmental Decision Making and Tools

  • To introduce students to some of the most important policy tools and techniques to assist them in decision-making.
  • Be able to select and use certain management techniques and policy tools to support decision- making in environmental management and policy.

Environmental Pollution and Assessment

  • To enhance students' understanding of the pathways in the environment followed by pollutants from source to receptor
  • Be able to assess the physical and chemical processes involved in the progress of pollutants from source to receptor, and manage the impacts the pollutants may have on a range of receptors.

Water Technology and Pollution

  • To introduce the student to the various unit processes used in water and wastewater treatment, including underlying pollution theory and treatment technology.
  • Be able to describe the basic concepts of polluted water treatment technology and the selection of unit treatment processes.

Careers

The majority of the graduates enter environmental consultancy both in the UK and abroad usually within the risk assessment and contaminated land areas. A second path of graduates is to regulatory agencies/government bodies such as the Environment Agency of England & Wales and the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. Other paths have included further study, the retail sector and banking. To date, the Option has had an excellent track record of employment with over 90% of graduates employed within 12 months of completing the MSc.

The ability to accurately monitor emissions to the environment and mitigate their harmful impacts sits at the heart of this diverse Environmental Science masters degree, which focuses on developing the professional skills required for a rewarding career as an environmental pollution scientist.

Overview

Through this postgraduate degree course you will explore the scientific basis of pollution and the practical approaches to its control. In your first semester, you will study the science behind pollutants and their effect on the environment. You will measure and monitor air, water and waste pollution, remediate problems and examine the latest technologies in the field. You will also study modules in Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Resource Management, developing critical skills sets for students aiming to pursue a career as an environmental scientist.

In the second semester, we develop your practical skills. You will learn to apply innovative research techniques, present arguments and understand how research funding works. You will study a module in Environmental Law and Management which will enable you to apply your understanding of environmental pollution to the legal and policy mechanisms that control harmful emissions to protect and enhance our environment.

Each semester, you have the option to specialise in modules related to your interests and career aspirations, from Water and Wastewater Engineering to Coastal Flood Defence to Energy Resources & Engineering. Throughout the course we aim to equip you with a diverse range of professional and transferable skills.

The final part of the year will focus on your individual research work. You will complete an advanced research project and be encouraged to work with industry to apply your newly-developed knowledge.

The course combines taught modules with an independent major research project. The taught modules introduce the nature of our atmosphere, its composition and meteorology, air pollutant emissions, air pollution chemistry and climate change / carbon management, together with the practical measures used to limit emissions from sources ranging from power stations to vehicles and the legislative and policy framework used by national and local authorities to enforce air quality objectives. The research project allows students to undertake an in-depth investigation of a particular aspect of air pollution of interest to them, and further their level of understanding.

This programme is run by the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management.

About the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management
The Division is based in the well-equipped, purpose-built facilities of the University's Public Health Building. Research attracts extensive funding from many sources, including the Department of Transport; the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA); the Environment Agency; the Department of Health; the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and European Union. The collaborative nature of much of this work, together with the mix of pure, strategic and applied research, often involving interdisciplinary teams spanning physical, biological, chemical, medical and social sciences, provides a dynamic and internationally recognised research environment.

The Division is led by Professor Roy Harrison who is a member of the U.K. government’s Air Quality Expert Group, Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants, and Committee on Toxicity. He often gives media interviews on subjects including the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

If your environmental interests are concerned with pollution of any kind the Environmental Pollution and Remediation programme covers all you need to know to assess and analyse pollutants in our environment. You understand legislation and policies relating to pollution control, known environment risk assessment methods and regulation and regulators. In todays world there are many pollution issues not least of which is air pollution and its affect on our health and quality of life. Pollution control is essential in waterways and sea to ensure ecology and the food chain are not affected by major issues and soil can also be contaminated in many different ways over the longer term or in the short term.

Employment options include consultancy work to advise all types of organisations, sectors and business and support regulators at busy times. You can work as a regulator within central and local government and private business involved in operations that affect the environment, Sectors you are likely to work in cross energy, agriculture, fisheries, waterways, and specific polluting industrial areas. New technology is also becoming widely available to sense different pollutants in the environment with many different tools and options becoming available to experts in the area. Different countries require different levels of regulation but there is now a growing social need by major organisations devoted to health and quality of life such as UNEP to solve major pollution issues that put us as a species at risk.

You study environmental science related to pollution and remediation at UK and international level, studying hydrocarbon risk assessment and remediation, environmental analysis and EIA (environmental impact assessments). You look at legislation, risk and analysis.

The aim of the Option is to provide graduates with the skills to enter a wide range of environmental careers, with particular emphasis on environmental consultancy and regulatory job markets. The Option is designed to train students in analysis and assessment methods applicable to environmental contamination problems.

The Environmental Analysis and Assessment (EAA) Option comprises lectures plus two practical case studies, each with a different technical emphasis.

 A large number of the lectures are from consultants, the regulators and industry professionals, many from alumni of the Option, providing the student with first-hand contact with live issues as well as the chance to discuss job opportunities with potential employers. 

The Option lectures are supported by a number of site visits plus a five-day study tour to provide practical underpinning of the Option material.

Aims

The EAA Option is designed to train students from diverse scientific and technical backgrounds in assessment methods applicable to environmental contamination and pollution problems.

The emphasis throughout the course is on the use of quantitative environmental assessment methodologies, including:

  • field sampling and laboratory analysis for direct determination of contaminant concentrations and distributions within environmental systems and;
  • predictive computer modelling techniques to assess the risks and impacts associated with either real or hypothetical contamination scenarios.

A thorough grounding in physical, chemical and biological processes of contaminant behaviour in the environment is provided as the basis for understanding the impacts of chemical contamination. This is strengthened by the introduction to, and use of, predictive modelling techniques for assessing risks and impacts associated with either real or hypothetical contamination scenarios.

To complement and enhance teaching of quantitative aspects of environmental assessment techniques, classical EIA and auditing methodologies are also an important course component.

After completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • understand the fundamental pathways and processes controlling the behaviour and fate of contaminants in environmental systems;
  • design suitable field sampling strategies for the assessment of contaminant distributions in the near-surface atmosphere, surface and ground waters and soils;
  • suggest appropriate sampling and analytical methods for inorganic and organic contaminants in different environmental media and to liaise effectively with analysts and laboratories specialising in the analysis of individual contaminating substances;
  • organise data sets obtained from field sampling and laboratory analytical studies and be able to configure these in a suitable format for higher level data analysis using a computer tool such as a Geographical Information System;
  • apply suitable computer models to evaluate critical pathways and processes of contaminant transport in the environment or to perform simulations of future impacts of contaminant releases from a variety of sources;
  • understand the legal and policy framework within which quantitative environmental assessment activities are carried out and to apply EIA and auditing methodologies where appropriate.

Fieldwork

One piece of fieldwork is undertaken in collaboration with the WM and Health and HGWEoptions of the MSc, and provides a "real-world" case study of contaminated land and water on Hounslow Heath, near Heathrow Airport, in close collaboration with Hounslow London Borough Council. The second piece of fieldwork is a waste management project in collaboration with Veolia Waste Management Services Ltd., providing an opportunity for students to work on a typical waste management problem.

At the end of the Option term the EAA students will spend a week on location at a city somewhere in the UK visiting a variety of industrial facilities, plants and operations.

This course provides training in all aspects of the supply of clean water, the control of pollution and the protection of public health, waste water treatment, air pollution control and solid waste management.

The problems of both industrialised and less developed countries are addressed in detail.

A close collaboration exists with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Water Research Centre.

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management meets regularly at the College, and students are encouraged to attend these meetings.

All of our MSc courses are career-orientated and cover both theoretical background and practical design considerations.

Lectures are given mainly by full-time staff but important contributions are made by visiting professors and guest lecturers who are eminent industrialists.

Many of our students continue their studies to undertake research towards a PhD.

The MSc in Environmental Health Sciences has been designed to allow graduates from a range of science and engineering disciplines to develop and extend knowledge in risk-based assessment and management of environmental influences on human health.

Environmental health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. This includes the study of:

- environmental protection including control of air, water and land pollution

- food safety and hygiene including production, distribution and fitness for human consumption

- occupational health and safety including investigation and control of work-related accidents and ill health

- the built environment including homes, workplaces and public spaces

Environmental health work is important and highly worthwhile and many of our students are motivated by a desire to directly improve living and working conditions for a wide range of people.

You'll develop expertise in current methods for examining factors that affect human health, assessing and managing the risks involved, and meeting the challenges resulting from changes in the interaction between people and the environment.

The wide scope of environmental health sciences and the corresponding breadth of the degree reflect rapid technological progress. Environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, air, water and noise pollution are increasingly important and there is a pressing need for graduates with skills in these disciplines.

This course also provides an emphasis on teaching subjects that are relevant to contemporary problems faced by communities, government, industry and commercial organisations.

For example, professionals from outside Strathclyde work together with academic staff and students in the teaching of case studies of outbreaks of water-borne and food-borne diseases and also in urban and industrial air quality management.

You’ll study

Teaching is based on a core of conventional lectures and tutorials, complemented by group projects, laboratory classes, student-led seminars and fieldwork. The programme can be studied over one year full-time, two years part-time or up to five years through Open Access.

On the full-time programme, you’ll follow a core curriculum of eight classes and four optional class. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August.

Facilities

Our laboratory facilities are well-equipped for a wide range of chemical and biological measurements. High-technological instrumentation and space are available to investigate:

- marine and freshwater quality

- air quality

- solid and hazardous wastes

- environmental microbiology

Teaching staff

The course is delivered by staff from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The academic team includes:

- Dr Iain Beverland, programme manager of the MSc in Environmental Health Sciences. He has research & teaching interests in the areas of air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, & public/environmental health. Current research includes study of the effects of exposure to air pollution on human health, with a focus on traffic-related air pollution in urban areas.

- Dr Tara K Beattie has expertise in the field of public health and the management of water and solid waste. Her research interests include free-living protozoa and their potential to cause human disease.

- Dr Raymond Wong has research and teaching interests in the areas of food laws (EU and UK), policies and compliance; food poisoning, contamination and prevention; and food safety management systems.

- Dr Christine Switzer specialises in contaminant fate, transport and remediation with emphases on non-aqueous phase liquids and aggressive remediation technologies.

Additional information

Staff within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering have engaged with developing Environmental Health training in Africa for almost 20 years.

Flexible Options – Distance Learning & CPD

This course is also offered via Distance Learning mode, which allow you to complete an MSc via online study at home, at a time that suits you. This means you can study while balancing your existing work and family commitments. This option is suitable for students located anywhere in the world. The MSc via Distance Learning is via part-time study over 3 years.

Home students can also choose to study through the Professional Development route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification. This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes. Students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through this route instead.

Graduates in environmental health sciences are well prepared for a wide range of professions that require intellectual flexibility and analytical skill.

Who is it for?

The MSc in Atmospheric Emission Technology course is designed to provide up-to-date knowledge focusing on international and industrial emission monitoring and control technologies. The latest atmospheric and air quality policy and modelling developments will be introduced to prepare you for a career as air quality monitoring and emissions technology experts within industry, environmental consultancies or regulators.

Currently there is a scarcity of higher education courses in topics that are relevant to air quality management. This course will provide a future generation of professionals in the air quality and air pollution control sectors, with comprehensive understanding of sources and dispersion of atmospheric pollutants linked with key industrial processes and vehicle/aircraft emission.

Informed by Industry

The course offers unique practical experience in the NERC/Met Office Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurement (FAAM) base in the Centre for Atmospheric Informatics and Emissions Technology at Cranfield.

Many academics in the teaching team have significantly experience working in close collaboration with environmental consultancies, the emission monitoring and control industry, and regulators.

Course details

The course comprises eight assessed modules, a group project and an individual research project.

Group project

The group projects are founded on group-based research programmes typically undertaken between February and April. The projects are designed to integrate knowledge, understanding and skills from the taught modules in a real-life situation.

Individual project

The thesis project, typically delivered between May and September, further develops research and project management skills that provide the ability to think and work in an original way; contribute to knowledge; overcome genuine problems; and communicate through a thesis and oral exam. Each student is allocated a supervisor who will guide and assess the student's work.

Graduates find employment in numerous industrial sectors, including industries producing and distributing energy, thermal, thermal-electric, air-conditioning and refrigeration plant design and management companies, energy management in companies or bodies with production objectives which may be far-removed energy. The programme provides a mix of design, operational and management skills, with particular emphasis on system and process engineering related to the production of basic energy carriers (electricity, heat and fuels) under tight environmental constraints. Students will learn how to evaluate and solve engineering issues (thermal, environmental, mechanical, chemical, electrical) raised by energy conversion systems, as well as analyze and assess operational and maintenance issues. Particular attention will be devoted to renewable energy sources, non-conventional energy technologies, emission control, electric systems with distributed power generation, etc. Teaching is organized around 3 core aspects: modeling and simulation tools; interdisciplinary vision; problem-solving approach. The Environmental Management MSc degree provides you with a range of skills, knowledge and expertise to pursue a career in the field of environmental management.

We have successfully trained hundreds of graduates for analytical, managerial and policy making roles since 1994. Our graduates have had career success with government agencies, commercial organisations, independent environmental consultancies, universities, colleges and research institutions.

The MSc course can be completed in 12 months full time with options to extend that period up to 3 years for part-time study. Two-thirds of your time is spent studying taught modules that equip you with the knowledge and skills to undertake a Masters project that occupies the final third of your programme.

Be it the industrial environment, ecological environment or a more technical environmental approach, options allow you to concentrate on forward planning especially with regard to your Masters thesis.

If you are more focused on issues such as contaminated land and remediation or laboratory skills in analysing soil, air and water samples then we have the modules for you. Our laboratories are furnished with state of the art computer controlled instruments allowing monitoring and analysis of most chemical pollutants encountered in the environment.

If a more ecological specialism is for you then we offer modules in Ecological Management as well as in the Regulation & Assessment of Water Pollution – both of these have practical / field work components. The Environmental Impact Assessment module combines many skills across a wide suite of environmental areas.

We also offer a module that uses Geographical Information Systems – this is a style of computerised mapping of data increasingly used in environmental applications. For this we have a dedicated specialised computer laboratory.

The distance learning format allows you to study when and where you like. Our academic staff will guide you through the course and provide the support you need, no matter where you are based. Modules include ‘Environment Auditing and Management Systems’, ‘Risk Assessment and Management’ and ‘Health and Safety’.

For the Masters research project, you can negotiate a topic that reflects your personal interests and career aspirations as well as our supervisory expertise. Sunderland’s research specialisms include air pollution, contaminated land, environmental sustainability, and behavioural safety.

This course is available via distance learning either full-time over 1 year or part-time over 3 years.

Course content

The content of the course is entirely delivered through distance learning, making it a very flexible way to achieve a Masters qualification. Modules on this course include:

Teaching and assessment

This distance learning course is delivered via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Our teaching and learning methods include web-based reading packs, e-books, e-journals, relevant websites, multimedia and e-discussions.

Before applying for the course, we advise that you carefully consider your work and other commitments. The full-time course requires around 40 hours of study per week, every week for 13 months. The part-time course is designed for people who are working and requires around 20 hours of study per week, for the duration of each module. You will take three modules per year.

The majority of students on this course are in employment and choose to study part-time. Part-time mode normally takes three years to complete. As modules occur at fixed times, any other programme of study will need to be negotiated and agreed with the Programme Leader.

Facilities & location

This course can be studied anywhere in the world that has internet access. The course is delivered by the University's Virtual Learning Environment using learning reading packs, e-books, e-journals, relevant websites and multimedia.

You will have full access to our libraries and, as a distance learning student, you will particularly benefit from our web-based ‘Discover’ search tool. This helps you gain remote access to online journals, articles and e-books – whenever and wherever you happen to be studying.

Employment & careers

Legislation and stakeholders are demanding ever higher standards of quality and accountability in Health and Safety and Environment Management. This is generating new roles with higher expectations of professionalism and knowledge. This course equips you to take up those roles, which are increasingly central to the way that organisations do business.

Potential roles include:
-Health and Safety manager or consultant
-Environmental manager, project leader, consultant or auditor
-Health, Safety and Environmental manager
-Environmental and Sustainability manager
-Waste manager
-Pollution control agency manager

At management level, salaries are in the range of around £35,000 up to around £50,000 in large companies. Employers typically require proven expertise in health, safety and environmental systems, an in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and standards, and the ability to work effectively with others in order to take proactive measures and to communicate with all stakeholders.

Increasingly, employers expect candidates to be members of professional bodies such as IOSH. Our course is accredited by IOSH and provides the basis for graduate membership.
