The course combines taught modules with an independent major research project. The taught modules introduce the nature of our atmosphere, its composition and meteorology, air pollutant emissions, air pollution chemistry and climate change / carbon management, together with the practical measures used to limit emissions from sources ranging from power stations to vehicles and the legislative and policy framework used by national and local authorities to enforce air quality objectives. The research project allows students to undertake an in-depth investigation of a particular aspect of air pollution of interest to them, and further their level of understanding.

This programme is run by the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management.

About the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management
The Division is based in the well-equipped, purpose-built facilities of the University's Public Health Building. Research attracts extensive funding from many sources, including the Department of Transport; the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA); the Environment Agency; the Department of Health; the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and European Union. The collaborative nature of much of this work, together with the mix of pure, strategic and applied research, often involving interdisciplinary teams spanning physical, biological, chemical, medical and social sciences, provides a dynamic and internationally recognised research environment.

The Division is led by Professor Roy Harrison who is a member of the U.K. government’s Air Quality Expert Group, Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants, and Committee on Toxicity. He often gives media interviews on subjects including the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Course modules:

The course recognises the need for an integrated approach to pollution control. It acknowledges the links between pollution of air, water and land, and proposes that an integrated approach minimises damage to the environment. The mode of delivery is studentcentred distance learning, with regular tutorial days, allowing access to professional training while in full-time employment.

The course begins by establishing fundamental knowledge of water and air quality and the associated techniques of pollution control. It continues by providing fundamental knowledge of waste management and associated techniques, and concludes with integrated pollution prevention control and investigating how the three major pollution areas affect each other.

This course focuses on UK and European legislation and techniques suitable for a temperate climate. Four core modules are studied, each one is worth 30 credits. These are:

•Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC)
•Waste
•Air
•Water

The course concludes with a project (60 credits), which is an opportunity to engage in a critical reflection on an area of policy or practice. Recent topics include; compliance with environmental legislation when working in and around water courses
during utility industry construction, installing a grey water recycling system, an investigation into the impact of new statistical guidance for contaminated land assessment, and a framework for modernising legislation affecting waste management on the Isle of Man.

Teaching and Assessment:

You are encouraged to attend an induction session at the start of the course – these days allow you to meet key members of staff and familiarise yourself with studying by distance learning. The course operates on a rolling, modular basis and you join when a new module commences. The majority of the course material is delivered via distance learning modules.

Each module is based on a 15 week study timetable, although you can extend the study block to allow flexibility within a fixed framework. You are actively encouraged to attend day tutorials for the Air, Water, Waste and IPPC modules. The course is assessed through the completion of post-tests and assignments at the end of each module. You will also complete a practical project and undertake an oral exam.

Expertise:

Practitioners are employed as tutors for the various modules, ensuring that you receive a blend of theory and practical real world experience that is directly applicable to the working environment.

The course is managed by the Postgraduate and Continued Professional Development (CPD) Office, a specialist department with over 15 years’ experience of supporting distance learning students.

Graduate careers:

This course produces people who can recognise and respond to increasing environmental performance requirements within
industry and regulatory authorities. Graduates are typically employed in diverse roles within local authorities such as environmental health technician, assistant pollution control officer, network operations manager and water byelaws adviser.

This postgraduate programme in Environmental Science: Pollution and Monitoring provides a rigorous academic treatment of the fundamental scientific principles and practice of assessing and controlling the extent of environmental damage by Man’s activities. The course emphasises the technology and principles behind the processes and techniques related to the reduction of emissions to air, land and water and the effects of pollution.

The course develops understanding of the complex interactions of societies and their environments, and a critical awareness of how these interactions are unevenly experienced. The course seeks to raise your ability to understand the influence of human activities on ecological system including the relationship between hazard and risk. You will be able to study the environmental and technological issues in the management and control of air, soil and water pollution. In addition, you will learn how to collect representative samples of air, soil and water for environmental monitoring. Hands on experience on the use of various analytical techniques and the use of various statistical analyses for data quality assessment (DQA) are also provided.

Accreditation

The MSc in Environmental Science: Pollution and Monitoring is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). This entitles students to free student membership of the IES and CIWEM.

For our September intake we have 2 specific scholarship schemes available: the Queen's Anniversary Prize Scholarships provide 6 x £3000 fee waiver scholarships to our best applicants (no additional application is required for these); and the £4000 Water Conservators Bursary is awarded to one student who writes the essay on water and the environment (some years we split the scholarship between 2 exceptional applicants). Brunel Univeristy London also has some scholarship schemes available for applicants to any MSc programme.

Designed to suit your needs

This MSc course can be taken in part-time (from 1 day a week for 2 years) or full-time (from 2 days a week for 1 years) mode. Students can start in September or January.

This course provides training in all aspects of the supply of clean water, the control of pollution and the protection of public health, waste water treatment, air pollution control and solid waste management.

The problems of both industrialised and less developed countries are addressed in detail.

A close collaboration exists with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Water Research Centre.

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management meets regularly at the College, and students are encouraged to attend these meetings.

All of our MSc courses are career-orientated and cover both theoretical background and practical design considerations.

Lectures are given mainly by full-time staff but important contributions are made by visiting professors and guest lecturers who are eminent industrialists.

The MSc in environmental health sciences has been designed to allow graduates from a range of science and engineering disciplines to develop and extend knowledge in risk-based assessment and management of environmental influences on human health.

Environmental health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. This includes the study of:
- environmental protection including control of air, water and land pollution
- food safety and hygiene including production, distribution and fitness for human consumption
- occupational health and safety including investigation and control of work-related accidents and ill health
- the built environment including homes, workplaces and public spaces

Environmental health work is important and highly worthwhile and many of our students are motivated by a desire to directly improve living and working conditions for a wide range of people.

You'll develop expertise in current methods for examining factors that affect human health, assessing and managing the risks involved, and meeting the challenges resulting from changes in the interaction between people and the environment.

The wide scope of environmental health sciences and the corresponding breadth of the degree reflect rapid technological progress. Environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, air, water and noise pollution are increasingly important and there is a pressing need for graduates with skills in these disciplines.

This course also provides an emphasis on teaching subjects that are relevant to contemporary problems faced by communities, government, industry and commercial organisations.

You’ll study

Teaching is based on a core of conventional lectures and tutorials, complemented by group projects, laboratory classes, student-led seminars and fieldwork. The programme can be studied over one year full-time, two years part-time or up to five years through Open Access.

On the full-time programme, you’ll follow a core curriculum of eight classes and four optional class. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August.

Our laboratory facilities are well-equipped for a wide range of chemical and biological measurements. High-technological instrumentation and space are available to investigate:
- marine and freshwater quality
- air quality
- solid and hazardous wastes
- environmental microbiology

Teaching staff

The course is delivered by staff from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. A brief profile of some members of the academic team is provided below:
- Dr Iain Beverland is the programme manager of the MSc in Environmental Health Sciences. He has research & teaching interests in the areas of air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, & public/environmental health. Current research includes study of the effects of exposure to air pollution on human health, with a focus on traffic-related air pollution in urban areas.

- Dr Tara K Beattie has expertise in the field of public health and the management of water and solid waste. Her research interests include free-living protozoa and their potential to cause human disease.

- Dr Raymond Wong has research and teaching interests in the areas of food laws (EU and UK), policies and compliance; food poisoning, contamination and prevention; and food safety management systems.

- Dr Christine Switzer specialises in contaminant fate, transport and remediation with emphases on non-aqueous phase liquids and aggressive remediation technologies.

Additional information

Staff within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering have engaged with developing Environmental Health training in Africa for almost 20 years.

Dr Tracy Morse, a graduate from the BSc (Hons) Environmental Health programme, was a recent winner of the title Strathclyder of the Year. Dr Morse won the title for her outstanding work as Project Manager of the University's Scotland Chikwawa Health Initiative. This is a scheme funded by the Scottish Government to improve maternal health and drive down infant mortality rates in four villages in Southern Malawi. Dr Morse is the Malawi-based coordinator of all the activities of the University's Malawi Millennium Project.

Open Access

Home students can also choose to study through Open Access. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Open Access route instead.

The programme provides a mix of design, operational and management skills, with particular emphasis on system and process engineering related to the production of basic energy carriers (electricity, heat and fuels) under tight environmental constraints. Students will learn how to evaluate and solve engineering issues (thermal, environmental, mechanical, chemical, electrical) raised by energy conversion systems, as well as analyze and assess operational and maintenance issues. Before applying for the course, we advise that you carefully consider your work and other commitments. The full-time course requires around 40 hours of study per week, every week for 13 months. The part-time course is designed for people who are working and requires around 20 hours of study per week, for the duration of each module. You will take three modules per year.

The majority of students on this course are in employment and choose to study part-time. Part-time mode normally takes three years to complete. As modules occur at fixed times, any other programme of study will need to be negotiated and agreed with the Programme Leader.

Programme summary

We are facing a future with an increased demand for food, water, energy and other resources, which will have an enormous impact on our already heavily burdened environment. The MSc Environmental Sciences programme is designed for students who want to take up this challenge in finding innovative and sustainable approaches to secure and improve the state of the environment. To allow you maximum flexibility in your individual course of study, there are no formal specialisations and compulsory elements are kept at a minimum. This allows you to tailor the programme to your individual needs. Thesis tracks

The ten thesis tracks are clustered in 4 groups.

Environmental Quality
Investigates the physical, chemical and biological processes that influence the quality of the environmental compartments: Soil, Water and Air; and the effects of pollutants on humans and ecosystems. Students can choose the thesis tracks Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management, Air Quality and Atmospheric Chemistry, Soil Biology and Biological Soil Quality, Soil Chemistry and Chemical Soil Quality, or Environmental Toxicology.

Environmental Systems Analysis
Studies the natural and social processes involved in environmental issues. It aims to develop integrative tools and methodologies and to apply these in strategic research. Students can choose to develop such an integrated approach via the thesis track Environmental Systems Analysis.

Environmental Policy and Economics
Covers the contribution of the social sciences to environmental research. The focus is on the social, political, legal and economic aspects of environmental issues and the goal is to provide students with the skills for studying, formulating and designing innovative forms of national and international environmental governance. You can choose a thesis track in the disciplines of Environmental Policy, Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, or Integrated Water Management.

Environmental Technology
Concentrates on biological, chemical and physical processes for water reuse and the recovery of nutrients, minerals and energy. The aim is to fully understand these processes in order to design and optimise innovative technologies for renewable energy, closing nutrient cycles and solving environmental issues. You can choose any of these topics via the thesis track Environmental Technology.

Your future career

Graduates from this programme are well-equipped to continue their scientific training in a PhD programme or to begin - or continue - a professional career requiring independent scientific performance. Students are taught the knowledge and skills needed to communicate with experts from different disciplines allowing them to play a key role in complex environmental and sustainability issues. Most graduates enter careers in environmental consultancy, research and management, while others are involved in policy development and higher education.

Upon graduation, Charlotte started working as environmental consultant at MWH Global. Two years later, she continued her career at the water board Hollandse Delta as innovation engineer. She works together with different parties for implementing innovative and sustainable ideas. One project she is involved in is an initiative of all water boards that focuses on the recovery of valuable compounds in sewage. “It’s time to see our sewage not as a dirty waste stream, but as a valuable resource. We should not destroy this potential of sewage. On the contrary, it is our duty to recover and reuse all its valuable components.”
