Course structure

The MSc in Agri-Environmental Economics and Policy is studied over one year full-time or two years part-time and is divided into two stages: eight taught modules (seven of which are compulsory) and a dissertation.

The compulsory modules provide a basis for you to acquire the basic skills for the programme, regardless of your first degree background, while the optional module enables you to acquire a broader understanding of the issues in growth and development, trade and development, or further your skills in econometrics. All MSc students take a module in Research Methods, which provides practical skills and knowledge for MSc-level research.

All of our MSc programmes require some mathematical analysis, and we recognise that students have widely differing backgrounds in mathematics. The first week of all our MSc programmes includes compulsory intensive teaching in mathematics, refreshing and improving your skills in order to equip you with the techniques you will need for the rest of the programme.

Students who successfully pass the taught element of the programme, proceed to the dissertation stage, where you undertake a supervised project of your choice on an applied issue in environmental economics. Advice on choice of dissertation topic and management is given during the taught stage of the programme. The dissertation stage develops students’ research skills and follows on from the Research Methods module. Student dissertations are supervised by academic staff.

Labour and education economics
Staff research includes work in the areas of wage distributions, skills and job quality, education, migration and trade.

Macroeconomics, money and finance
Staff research in this area includes: macroeconometric theory; monetary policy; financial markets and macroeconomic performance growth theory and international macroeconomics; theoretical models of business cycles, labour market search and financial sources of economic fluctuations; DSGE models; growth theory and empirics.

Microeconomic theory, games and behaviour
Research interests cover public economics especially tax policy; gambling and uncertainty; international trade and government procurement; health economics; public goods; leadership in co-ordination games; industrial organisation; theoretic modelling; economic history.

Development economics
Research interests include work on growth; trade; the balance of payments; different aspects of migration and remittances on growth; applied studies focusing on particular developing countries.

Agri-environmental economics
Research interests cover non-market valuation, food safety, information economics applied to environmental problems, design and evaluation of agri-environmental policies, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, European agricultural policy, agricultural trade policy.

Research strengths are the regional impact of transport investments; the economic evaluation of infrastructure; regulation and alternative funding models; the economics of public-private partnerships.

Introduction

This programme aims to equip students with the advanced skills, knowledge and expertise to undertake technical and production management roles in the globally important agri-food sector.

The agri-food sector is intrinsically linked to challenges around land and water use, climate change and health and well-being.

Students will have the opportunity to study areas such as advanced crop science, advanced food manufacturing, new product and process development, food safety & technical management, as well as commercial, operational, supply chain and agile management.

Students will also have access to industry-relevant specialist technologies and new equipment at both the University of Lincoln’s food and agricultural campuses, the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at Holbeach, and at Riseholme Park. The costs of this travel will be covered by the University.

There will be the chance to undertake a research project either in industry or academia, which provides an opportunity to apply new knowledge in a real-life setting. This will also allow students the opportunity to make invaluable contacts with potential employers prior to completing the course.

Interviews & Applicant Days

All applicants meeting the initial academic requirements for this course are required to undertake an interview with academic staff before a decision concerning the offer of a place can be made. It is expected that applicants will be able to demonstrate a keen interest in agriculture and all aspects of the farm-to-fork process.

In order to make this process available to all applicants, we utilise Skype as the prefered medium for those applicants who are not able to travel to Lincoln prior to the start of the programme.

A minimum 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a related discipline.

This course will equip you with the skills to tackle problems that lie at the plant/physical science interface on a molecular level. Chemical Biology through physical science innovation will lead to the development of novel technologies, vital to overcome future global challenges such as addressing the food, fuel and fibre needs of our growing population.
Advances in understanding biomolecular processes have often depended on the collaborative efforts of biochemists, chemists and physicists. Students will get training from both academic and industrial leaders in the plant and chemical biology fields. The course will enable students to bridge the gap that can exist between the physical and plant science disciplines because of differences in ‘language’, perspective and methodology. The course consists of an 8-month interdisciplinary research project, specialist lectures, transferable skills courses, interactive workshops, tutorials, journal clubs, and seminars.

Syngenta are the key industrial partner on this course. Joint Syngenta/Imperial research projects (internships) are available on a competitive basis. Students will either be based at Syngenta or at Imperial.

In the most recent joint submission to the Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014), the department was placed in the top 10 universities in the UK for research intensity and 78% of our research was world-leading or internationally excellent.

To achieve an MSc students must complete five optional modules (including up to three from BU) plus Research Methodology and Advances in Biosciences and a Dissertation.

Format

Key information:

- Two to five years to complete a full MSc.
- 14 weeks for one module by distance learning.
- Three intakes per year (January, May, September).

Our distance learning modules are designed to be flexible so that you can fit studying around your work and other commitments. A typical Masters student is expected to study for 200 hours when taking a 20 credit module. As a rule of thumb you should anticipate spending approximately 2-3 hours a week on online lectures, presentations and podcasts, and the remaining time on readings and assignments; the more time and effort you can put in, the more you'll benefit from studying the module and the better your grades are likely to be.

We have designed our training to be as accessible as possible, particularly for those in full time employment. Each topic comprises a 12-14 week distance learning module worth 20 credits which can be taken for your own continuing professional development or interest; or built towards a postgraduate qualification. The research elements of our qualifications are carried out in your work place with regular academic supervision. The training is web-based which means that as long as you have access to a reasonable broadband connection (i.e. are able to stream videos such as on YouTube), you can study where and when best suits you. Learning material includes podcast lectures, e-group projects, guided reading, interactive workbooks and discussion forums, as well as assignments and e-tutorials. By signing a re-registration form each year you will have access to e-journals and library resources for the full five years.

Being able to develop and maintain a resource of appropriately experienced, knowledgeable and qualified supervisory and management staff must be a primary strategic objective for any meat business as the success and growth of such businesses depends on possessing capable and appropriately educated staff. Equally, the long term stability of meat businesses relies on effective and achievable management succession planning which in itself requires access to staff who have the ability to grow into more senior roles and become the business leaders of the future.

How will it benefit me?

The course has been developed in recognition of the meat industry’s need to develop existing, experienced staff – not necessarily graduate staff – and also to provide a means by which new, graduate staff can gain an understanding of the topics required to operate a meat business successfully. The course has been designed expressly to meet the needs of businesses in the red meat sector of the UK’s meat industry, i.e. principally businesses involved in the production of beef, mutton and lamb, and pork, and associated products. The course is a meat business management course and not a meat science course. This means that much of the subject matter covered by the course will have relevance to other meat sectors, e.g. the white meat or poultry meat sector, and indeed other food processing and manufacturing businesses. Much of the knowledge required to run a food business is transferable and applicable to any kind of food business. This means that topics such as operations management, food quality management, food safety management, and supply chain management apply equally to red meat businesses as they do to other types of food processing and manufacturing business. The successful practise of management (and successful career development) in any food business depends significantly on acquisition of the required knowledge, from whatever source, and its appropriate application in the development and growth of the business with, importantly, increased profitability.

Cost

The tuition price of each taught module is £1,200 + VAT (residential accommodation and meals are additional), however funding for the tuition fee may be available through the Advanced Agri-Food Training Partnership. Some students may feel that they can benefit from external personal coaching as they study the course, this will be available and the price will be agreed depending on circumstances.

Microeconomic theory, games and behaviour

Research strengths are the regional impact of transport investments; the economic evaluation of infrastructure; regulation and alternative funding models; the economics of public-private partnerships.

Continuous assessment of coursework, examinations, and assessment of modules based solely on submitted work related to private individual study. Applied Animal Biology offers opportunities for advanced study and research leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in animal physiology, behaviour, welfare, and management of livestock, aquaculture, and wildlife species. Graduate training in applied animal biology normally involves a combination of courses in both basic and applied sciences, with research leading to a thesis or dissertation. Students are expected to publish their research results in relevant leading international refereed journals. Coursework selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee includes graduate courses in areas relevant to each student's research.

Applied Animal Biology is intended for students who want to study and/or work with animals. It provides students with fundamentals of animal behaviour, animal physiology and related fields as applied to farm, companion and other animals. It also exposes students to the role of animals in human society and the ethical, environmental and other issues that arise. It offers training in research skills needed for graduate work, and (with appropriate selection of courses) prepares students for admission to veterinary and human medicine. How will I learn?

This course is delivered on a part-time, distance learning basis. You will however be required to attend campus for induction and some assessments depending on choice of elective modules at PG Diploma level.

The Food Security in the Changing Environment MSc has been created with funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) as part of the Advanced Training Partnership (ATP). Modules from the Bangor MSc and the Aberystwyth MSc can be interchangeable between the two programmes. Bursaries are available for those employed in the UK agri-food industry.

Students studying the course will:

Examine the environmental, economic and social responsibility of farming in the context of food security and the changing environments.
Study how selected management practices can improve the resource-efficiency and overall sustainability of food production.
Gain a global perspective to question whether and how growing demand for food from limited land resources can be met through sustainable intensification.
Students will have the opportunity to study from 3 to 6 modules per year, depending on their status as part time or full time students. For the Masters degree, students will complete a total of 6 modules of study, detailed below, and a dissertation project.

Students may begin their study at the beginning of any module, either at the end of September, the end of January or the middle of May.

In the event of compulsory modules changing from year to year, existing students may choose from either the compulsory modules extant at the time of registration, or the new ones, and are advised to discuss their options with the Course Director.

Professionals in the agri-food industry, conservation and environment, farmers, and agricultural policy decision makers may be interested in the modules of this degree, as will full-time students wishing to pursue a post graduate degree that culminates in employability in these sectors.
