The Biomedical Engineering (BME) program seeks to prepare graduate engineers to face 21st-century challenges by advancing student understanding of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human injury, disease and the health complications associated with aging as they work to improve human health through advances in healthcare and medicine.

The master's degree program prepares students for careers in the biotechnology industry and medical/healthcare centers or providers of medical/healthcare technology.

Doctoral students will also develop a detailed understanding of the operation of the health care industry, preparing them for academic or industry careers related to medical technology, as well as the background necessary to pursue an entrepreneurial role in medical/healthcare technology. To assist students in pursuing new ventures, incubator space and technology transfer mechanisms are available.

In 2014, the first two doctoral graduates of this program went on to postdoctoral work at Pennsylvania State University, and a permanent position at American Systems in Washington D.C.

Educational Objectives

The goal of biomedical engineers is to improve human health through advances in healthcare and medicine. This includes advancing our understanding of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human injury, disease and the health complications associated with physiologic and sociologic factors such as aging, environment and diet. In this regard, we are living in an exciting time. In the last two decades or so we have witnessed, among numerous achievements, the decoding of the entire human genome, the birth of proteomic methods, the maturation of computerized tomography, dramatic advances in imaging and sensing technologies, the culture of stem cells, and advances in biomaterials that may eventually enable us to engineer tissues and even organs. Altogether, these achievements have dramatically augmented our potential for improving health care. However, addressing how to use these basic science research advances for improved health care represents a major challenge for biomedical engineers of the coming generation.
Chronic illness is now a dominant issue in health care, consuming vast sums of healthcare dollars, personnel and facilities usage. This situation will only be exacerbated over the coming decades with the aging of the population. As a result, improvements in our ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat chronic illness, and to do so at reasonable cost, has become a focus of the national healthcare agenda. Accordingly, the goal of the biomedical engineering program at Binghamton University is to prepare graduate engineers to face not only these new 21st century challenges, but also to advance new technologies for better healthcare.

The Gerontology course offers you flexibility with the choice to study either full or parttime. This interdisciplinary course is an ideal study pathway for health professionals including geriatricians, psychiatrists, GPs, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The course is also suited to graduates from the social and natural sciences, management, policy and politics, economics, law and the humanities.

The course is made up of required and optional modules totalling 180 credits (60 of which come

from a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words).

Course purpose

Aimed at: health professionals including geriatricians, psychiatrists, GPs, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and others from the medical and health sciences, as well as students from other disciplines including social and natural sciences, management, policy and politics, economics, law and humanities.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

We will teach you through a combination of lectures and seminars, and you will typically have 15 hours of this per module, over a 10 week term. We also expect you to undertake 135 hours of independent study for each module. For your 12,000 word dissertation, we will provide six half-hour supervisory sessions and three 2-hour workshops to complement your 591 hours of independent study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Assessment

The department assesses students using a combination of essays, written examinations, oral presentations and the dissertation. The nature of assessment varies by module. The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect.

Career prospects

Our Professional Doctorate in Clinical Research (DClinRes) has been designed to meet the challenge of providing high quality clinical research training for Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), including those in leadership roles. It is a unique collaboration between Clinical Education Development and Research ( CEDAR, http://cedar.exeter.ac.uk/programmes/), Psychology and the University of Exeter Medical School.

Delivered by leading academics and practitioners, the programme aims to educate Allied Health Professionals to shift the major focus of their research activities from a tradition characterised by work which is predominantly descriptive, cross-sectional and introspective, to one which is translational, experimental, longitudinal, generalisable and implementation focussed.

The programme includes advanced training in clinical research leadership skills and organisational practice, and is underpinned by the Medical Research Council’s mixed methods Complex Interventions Research Framework. The Doctorate offers participants the opportunity to complete a Service Related Research Project linked to their area of practice allowing them to evaluate their local clinical service. In addition, participants undertake a Major Clinical Research Project related to their area of practice and aligned with the strategic aims within their local service and organisation.

The programme is based on the latest guidance for research which investigates how to develop and determine the components, efficacy, effectiveness, applicability and translational utility of complex healthcare interventions for complex interventions in medicine. It integrates investigative methods for complex interventions through a mixed methodological process of development, feasibility/piloting, evaluation and implementation.

Responding to a challenge

Our Doctorate in Clinical Research has been developed in response to a need, identified by training commissioners and professional organisations, for specific skills training within this area of the healthcare workforce.

Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) such as nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, radiographers and occupational therapists have a critical role to play in meeting health and social care challenges at the fore of global health concerns.
These include an
• aging population,
• chronic diseases,
• and new endemics

AHPs engage in an ever widening range of activities, many of which are highly complex and take place in multiple care environments including acute medicine, chronic care facilities, community and residential care homes. Example activities include patient education programmes, the coordination and delivery of packages of psychosocial care, and support for patient self-care.

Changes in healthcare organisation internationally (e.g. short hospital periods and growing responsibility for patient self-care) are placing more healthcare in the hands of AHPs, increasing the scope and the overall need for an underpinning evidence base.

The relevance of a Complex Interventions Research Framework

The care provided by AHPs to patients is an increasingly complicated activity and can be seen as the quintessential ‘complex intervention’ – defined as an activity that contains a number of component parts with the potential for interactions between them which, when applied to the intended target population, produces a range of possible and variable outcomes (Medical Research Council, 2008).

Complex interventions are widespread throughout all of health and social care, from the apparently simple example of pharmacological treatment with its combination of biochemical, social and psychological factors influencing patient concordance and physiological response, to more obviously complex educational or psychological interventions where a multi-layered set of dynamic features have great bearing on ultimate effectiveness.

Our programmes are underpinned by the Medical Research Council’s mixed methods Complex Interventions Research Framework, which emphasises our commitment to applied research in a healthcare context.

Programme structure

Our Doctorate in Clinical Research is run part-time over four years. The taught component of the programme has been re-structured to better enable both national and international attendance. Health and Society studies the social and behavioural aspects of health and health promotion, but also other factors that affects health, for instance the organization of the food system and the interaction between individuals and the physical environment.

Programme summary

Health is a resource that enables people to lead an individually, socially and economically productive life. For many centuries, the care for individual and population health has been the domain of medical sciences. However, it is widely acknowledged that contemporary health problems are complex and cannot be solved by simply extending existing health services. Chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes are important contributors to the burden of disease; as are communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmittable diseases.

There is no single cause to such health problems. Biological factors aside, lifestyle and the social and physical environment are major contributors in both a positive and negative way. Many diseases are related to the way in which people behave and take care of their own health, for example, substance abuse (smoking, alcohol, drugs), nutrition, physical exercise, and sexual behaviour. Lifestyles are often rooted in the social environment of family and friends, the neighbourhood, and the school and working environment. Aspects of the physical environment also affect individual and population health including housing conditions, environmental pollution, the availability of green space, and the availability and accessibility of health services. Moreover, societal changes, such as demography (e.g. aging populations, single parent families), consumption patterns, communication technology developments, globalisation and commercialisation influence the health status of individuals and populations.

Since health is influenced by such a diversity of interconnected factors, the development of cross border public health policies is essential. Within the health care system, organisations and professionals have to increasingly work together in the provision of care, prevention and health promotion. The set-up of the programme reflects its focus on societal issues in the domain of health, health promotion and health care systems. The programme covers a niche in the Netherlands by primarily taking a sociological approach to this domain, centralising the link between health and human relationships. Here, human relationships are interaction patterns and dependencies both differing in nature, scope and intensity. In conjunction with this sociological approach, anthropological and social psychological approaches are key to the social scientific analysis of health within the program.

The study programme takes a comparative perspective with respect to the empowerment of individuals, communities and populations. In other words, to what degree do people have the (financial) means to arrange their lives and are they able to use facilities for health protection and health improvement. This way, emphasis is on the societal embedding of health and activities of health promotion in relation to social processes, structures and institutions. Together with sociology, the programme combines the domains communication science and health promotion but also includes perspectives from economics, management and public policy.

Specialisation

The Health and Society programme is already a specialisation. However, depending on education background and personal interests, the programme schedule may vary.

Your future career

The Health and Society study domain is becoming more and more relevant as a consequence of changing patterns in health problems and the factors influencing health. Policymakers are becoming more aware of the impact of health policy; and recent national and international policy documents have emphasised the importance of health promotion. The improvement and sustainability of acceptable levels of health remains a major challenge. This specialisation prepares you for careers as researchers, health promoters, health policy advisors or managers of health-oriented organisations.

Course detail

Rapid environmental change, population dynamics, poverty, and exclusion are interrelated processes that challenge human development. To tackle these complex issues, traditional disciplinary approaches to analysis and policy formulation are not sufficient. Instead, integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to studying the working of the human-environment system are needed. The Master Socio-Ecological Economics and Policy presents integrated approaches to development and human well-being that go beyond the usual polarization between socioeconomic development and environmental goals.

Purpose

The program offers training in socioeconomic analysis and focuses on the interfaces between environmental, economic and social challenges. This interdisciplinary and internationally oriented approach is based on three major pillars: theory, methodology, and application. The theory courses include concepts from a variety of disciplines, chosen for their relevance to global challenges. The methodological courses offer an integrated introduction to qualitative and quantitative methods and thus illustrate how they are best combined in empirical analyses. Relevance for policy making and organizational practice is emphasized throughout the program.

Our main focus lies on providing a thorough internationalization at the home university by attracting a diverse set of students from all over the world. The “international classroom at home” thus created is meant to allow students to experience foreign (academic) cultures, languages (especially English), and an international renowed faculty without having to leave the campus.
