LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

UCLan’s MSc in Agile Software Projects is designed to allow you to study part-time whilst in full-time employment maximising knowledge sharing between work place, the practitioner network and the University. This course is delivered in Preston over six weekends per year for two years (burst mode) followed by a one year work-based project.

You will be expected to do some reading before the first teaching weekend then do assessment work between the teaching weekends. Exams, if applicable, will be at the end of each module during standard university exam periods.

The School of Physical Sciences and Computing provides an 'electronic learning' environment to facilitate flexible learning. This environment combines traditional face-to-face workshops with additional, resource-rich, online materials allowing you to continue independent learning through a variety of approaches.

Assessment methods will include individual and group assignments, presentation, seminars and examinations.

OPPORTUNITIES

Students on this particular MSc are expected to already be employed in industry. International opportunities would still be available where students could carry out part of their studies abroad providing this was compatible with their existing employment.

We expect our students to be able to enhance their employment prospects within an information systems environment. This course will provide a framework within which you can take advantage of the opportunities of developing and improving technology to meet business and user needs.

Six taught modules are delivered on a rolling programme to allow students to join this master’s three times a year, in January, April or September. Three modules per year are studied for each of the first two years, see Programme at a Glance.

Successful completion of three modules leads to PGCert Computing; on successful completion of six taught modules PGDip in Agile Software Projects is awarded; MSc Agile Software Projects is awarded on successful completion of the entire course.

The university will provide academic supervision for a project in your workplace, giving you feedback on your reflections and analysis of situations at work. The project encourages you to read more widely and think more critically about tasks and problems at work.

Assessment used within this programme is usually formative or summative. These typically take the form of case studies, research and critical evaluation exercises and practical work based reports to resolve problems, develop a purchasing or quality strategy, for example. In some modules students are required to present their research/findings to their lecturer’s and peers followed by a question and answer session. Such assessment strategies are utilised by the course team to generate student driven work.

This scenario calls for increased levels of flexibility and agility, both in the technologies used and the processes followed for engineering software. This MSc will provide a sound background on the methods and techniques that can meet these challenges. - Manufacturing System and Process Modelling
The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of manufacturing and its management that recognises breadth and depth of required resources and information. This is done through developing an understanding of the hierarchy of computer based modelling relevant to manufacturing, ranging from the detail of material behaviour in processed parts, through macroscopic process models to the integration of processes within manufacturing systems and higher level business processes.

- Lean and Agile Manufacture
This module allows students to gain an understanding of lean and agile concepts in the manufacturing business, including its distribution chains. Students will learn to specify, design and evaluate an appropriate lean or agile business system.

- Engineering Management and Business Studies
The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company. Students will learn to evaluate commercial risk, plan and organise engineering activities for improved company effectiveness and communicate technical and business information to ensure maximum impact.

- Product Information Systems – Product Lifecycle Management
The objectives of this module are for students to understand and critically evaluate the emerging product information systems for designers in the form of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. - Additive Manufacturing
The module will introduce and develop the concepts of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and demonstrate the different AM techniques available at Loughborough University. - Projects
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research. Following eight taught modules, students pursue an individual project typically based on the diverse range of industrially focused manufacturing research strengths within the School. Part time students may base their projects on particular needs of their current employer.

Examinations are in January and May / June with coursework throughout the programme. The project is assessed by written report, presentation and exhibition.

Within national or multinational manufacturing industry companies working as a Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Systems Analyst or Software Development Specialist. Graduates may also study for an MPhil or PhD with the School’s research groups.

Individual Project

The Individual Project is the opportunity for a student to utilise and demonstrate their understanding of the taught phase of the course by applying their learning to a real world problem. It is also an opportunity to develop skills and achieve a greater level of understanding in a specific area or areas of relevance to the course. Students are allocated a supervisor and have access to subject matter experts to support them in the project phase.

Assessment

Spread throughout the programme and includes coursework, group presentations and examinations during the taught phase and for the MSc a research based dissertation.

The Institute for Digital Communications (IDCOM) is the UK's leading research institute in signal processing and communications and is home to the Li-Fi research and development centre. We have three major centres of activity; signal processing, communications systems and tomographic imaging. Our programme of research delivers world leading research in signal and image processing and communications from fundamental theoretical and algorithmic work through to its translation to specific audio, imaging, radar/sonar, and communications applications.

The Institute has excellent research facilities, including state-of-the-art computing systems and laboratories for agile tomography, and audio signal processing, as well as the Li-Fi research and development centre for visible light communications. Internationally recognised for our research on communications systems and signal processing, we offer research topics including: green radio; visible light communications; cognitive radio; compressive sensing; distributed sensor signal processing; and agile tomography.

Introduction

This programme aims to equip students with the advanced skills, knowledge and expertise to undertake technical and production management roles in the globally important agri-food sector.

The agri-food sector is intrinsically linked to challenges around land and water use, climate change and health and well-being.

Students will have the opportunity to study areas such as advanced crop science, advanced food manufacturing, new product and process development, food safety & technical management, as well as commercial, operational, supply chain and agile management.

Students will also have access to industry-relevant specialist technologies and new equipment at both the University of Lincoln’s food and agricultural campuses, the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at Holbeach, and at Riseholme Park. The costs of this travel will be covered by the University.

There will be the chance to undertake a research project either in industry or academia, which provides an opportunity to apply new knowledge in a real-life setting. This will also allow students the opportunity to make invaluable contacts with potential employers prior to completing the course.

How You Are Assessed

The University of Lincoln's policy on assessment feedback aims to ensure that academics will return in-course assessments to you promptly – usually within 15 working days after the submission date.

Interviews & Applicant Days

All applicants meeting the initial academic requirements for this course are required to undertake an interview with academic staff before a decision concerning the offer of a place can be made. It is expected that applicants will be able to demonstrate a keen interest in agriculture and all aspects of the farm-to-fork process.

In order to make this process available to all applicants, we utilise Skype as the prefered medium for those applicants who are not able to travel to Lincoln prior to the start of the programme.

Entry Requirements

A minimum 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a related discipline.

We will consider applicants from non-related degrees, with relevant experience.
