Course Description

This course will give you the leading-edge theories, tools and techniques you need to operate at a strategic and tactical level within global marketing. Created in close consultation with senior marketing professionals and the Chartered Institute of Marketing, it develops the skills sought by today's marketing employers.

In your first semester, you will explore fundamental issues and concepts of marketing practice, before learning about consumer buying behaviour and the factors influencing it. You will also take a holistic view of an organisation and how it attempts to develop marketing strategy in a challenging global environment.

In your second semester, you will learn about corporate and reputation management. You will also implement and work with practical tools including marketing plans and metrics, as well as developing your understanding of consumer engagement. You will be exposed to the very latest thinking in both conventional and digital marketing disciples.

Chartered Institute of Marketing

When you successfully complete your MSc Branding and Advertising course, you'll have the opportunity to gain an extra qualification, the Level 4 CIM professional Certificate. You'll also be exempt from certain modules on either the CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing or CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing. About the programme

The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

This interactive course, and the Strategic Corporate Brand Management and Consulting and Applied Corporate Branding modules in particular, allow you to engage with current industry experts who provide extra support and guidance in your coursework, classwork and presentations.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable emphasis on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Modes of study

Course structure

The course is organised into three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities, which are based on specialist reading, research and case studies. Modules are assessed through essays, reports, group work, presentations and examinations.

All of our Marketing MSc courses share six core modules (Moving to Masters, Critical Developments in Marketing Theory and Practice, Marketing Planning and Strategy, Marketing Research I: quantitative methods, Marketing Research II: qualitative methods, and a dissertation).

This is not a business studies-style MA; instead you'll take a rigorous, academic approach to promotional media and the uses of media in contemporary campaigns.

The core modules include two full modules and two half-modules taught in the Department of Media and Communications. These modules will explore public relations, advertising and marketing as inter-related professional disciplines, drawing on theoretical and professional debates. They will also offer introductions to media and cultural theory at the overlaps between the promotional professions, media and society.

The syllabus combines wider social theory with practical considerations and current issues. In addition, you may choose 30 further credits of options from a wide range of theoretical and practice-based modules within the department or elsewhere within Goldsmiths.

Throughout the core components of the degree, you'll examine the very wide range of ways in which public relations, advertising and marketing is represented in society, together with the skills and techniques enacted by practitioners in their day-to-day roles. You will be encouraged to develop your critical and analytical skills, but also to think creatively and become more confident in your aesthetic judgment.

This course offers students the opportunity to explore the major theories and debates which dominate the study and practice of the beauty and cosmetics industries. Students will be involved in blogging, social media, website development, entrepreneurship and brand development on this postgraduate degree.

The course encourages students to actively participate in debates about the professional, educational, political and cultural implications of beauty and cosmetics in modern societies around the world.

Students will also explore and use different research methods to investigate the branding and promotion of beauty services and cosmetics through marketing, advertising, events management, publicity or public relations.

This course will equip students with the latest knowledge, skills and resources to help them investigate areas of personal and work-based interest.

Students will develop their studies around personal career ambitions and enjoy visits to leading cosmetics and fashion events.

Graduates of the course will be able to apply their knowledge and practical skills to cosmetics branding and promotion, as well as sophisticated marketing and advertising concepts.

This course is divided into three trimesters to allow students to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's qualification. Each award is normally achieved within a 15 week study period (30 weeks for part-time students).

Taught by the School of Design and Leeds University Business School – one of the world’s top 100 business schools – you’ll take a creative approach to solving communication problems in advertising and branding. You’ll develop your own practice, collaborate with other designers and gain a deeper awareness of how design can convey a brand message, using a range of software and techniques.

At the same time, you’ll study ideas, research and theories in advertising to explore the strategic backdrop of brand communications from the blurring of markets to the ways in which digital technology, such as social media and mobile, have changed the relationship between brands and consumers.

Course Content

You’ll begin to develop your understanding of advertising principles from the start of the programme, when you’ll study consumer behaviour and explore how brands can adopt these different theories to inform their marketing strategies.

Focusing on contemporary issues, you’ll look at the process of strategic marketing communications and how strategic marketing works on the global stage. At the same time, you’ll study practical design modules where you’ll learn to visualise creative communications ideas and present your proposals to clients, as well as considering how compelling text within an advertising concept can influence consumers.

In Semester 2 you’ll build on this foundation by exploring integrated communication, developing creative concepts that can work for a range of different media outlets, as well as the broader aspects of campaign planning, print, radio and TV ad production and the ethics of advertising campaigns.
You’ll think about reach, frequency and the often complex question of return on investment and even choose from specialist modules on topics such as social media, sales promotion, brand management and direct marketing.

At the end of the programme you’ll submit a substantial project that demonstrates the knowledge and skills that you’ve gained. You can either complete a dissertation – an independent research project on a related topic of your choice – or develop a communication campaign concept of your own.
