At Dundee, we have a range of expertise and experience, including interdisciplinarity (a specific and unique strength of the programme), leadership, research, values and social work practice. We are particularly keen to establish links between theory and practice. Our modules also draw on experienced and knowledgeable guest lecturers both from the field and from academic research.

Why study Advanced Social Work Studies at Dundee?

The MSc in Advanced Social Work Studies will allow you to engage with advanced level social work theory and develop the knowledge base and enquiry skills required to understand and contribute to 21st century social work.

The course curriculum will encompass taught modules which require you to engage with ethical issues and dilemmas relating to social work. You will have the opportunity to critically engage with the challenges and opportunities of inter-professional collaboration and the role that organisational culture and change plays in the way social work is shaped and delivered.

The course will require you to develop and apply research skills and methods to social work issues in order to produce a Master’s level dissertation. This will allow you to explore and examine social work issues and contexts in order to develop new ways of thinking and understanding, and in turn seek to be transformative and impactful.

Who should study this course?

If you do not require a qualification to practise social work, but wish to enhance and develop your social work skills and knowledge at Master's level, this course is for you. Without the requirement for practice placements, the qualification can be achieved within one year.

If you are a postgraduate student wishing to develop a research profile, or to further your career in terms of practice or leadership, this course is also suitable.

How you will be taught

At the University of Dundee, we emphasise the development of autonomous and self-directed learning, with support and guidance through structured personal tutor and module leaders. Our approaches include:

What you will study

Semester 1

Decision Making (30 credits) - which will provide a critical insight into contemporary social work issues around risk, values, ethics and social work law.

Research Methods for Professional Enquiry (30 credits) - which will provide students with a Master’s level knowledge of research skill.

Additionally students will have the opportunity to select one optional module from the MSc Social Work, MSc Community learning and Development or MSc Leadership and Innovation courses which will provide interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.


Semester 2

Research project (60 credits) relevant to Social Work which will be supported by a dissertation supervisor and ongoing collaboration with peers. This module will run the full length of the semester and the full dissertation will be completed during the summer.

Inter‐Professional Collaboration and Organisational change (30 credits) - joint module with Community Learning and Development and Leadership and Innovation students.

Applicants to the MSc have usually achieved the Professional Social Work Practice PGCert and PGDip and therefore already chosen a practice, education or management route. Advice and guidance on this issue are available from the admissions tutor if desired.

The Advanced Social Work MA offers a professional development pathway to assist qualified social workers in meeting capabilities and standards of practice consistent with the role of experienced and advanced practitioners. It incorporates recent changes in social work education and professional regulation, such as the introduction of the Professional Capability Framework (PCF) (The College of Social Work, 2010) and standards for continuing professional development set by Health and Care Professions Council.

This course aims to provide busy practitioners with structured opportunities for critical reflection within a well-resourced and research-informed learning community. Designed and managed in close consultation with local and regional employers and representatives of partner agencies and people who access social work services, the programme complements the range of development opportunities available to social workers (including in-house training and personal career planning). Research skills are central to the programme and a 'capstone' research project will enable you to produce an account of original research that is suitable for publication in a refereed journal.

This is a part-time modular programme providing continuing professional education for registered social workers who are currently working with children and young people, their families and carers in the UK.

The programme leads to one of three awards; you can enter at MSc, Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma level. Alternatively, you are welcome simply to take any of our units on a credit-only basis.

The programme is normally accessed by qualified social workers as part of their employment with local authorities or voluntary/independent sector organisations in the South West of England. However, we also welcome applications from appropriately qualified and experienced practitioners/managers working elsewhere in the UK. It is managed in partnership with local employers.

Programme structure

The programme is timetabled so that you study on a part-time basis, and access to units is modular.

Postgraduate Certificate students must take three units, normally including at least two of the four core units. If only two core units are taken as part of the Postgraduate Certificate, the remaining 20 credits are taken from the optional units (a total of 60 credit points).

Postgraduate Diploma and Master's students must take all four core units and two of the optional units (a total of 120 credit points).

You will undertake research methods training before accessing the dissertation unit. This is normally achieved through successful completion of the research methods unit, Philosophy and Research Design in the Social Sciences.

Successful completion of the dissertation leads to the full Master's award (a total of 180 credit points).

Credit-only students can undertake any of the units available on the programme. This will give students the opportunity to gain academic credits towards their continuing professional development. However, if students wish to build up academic credits in order to gain a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma or MSc, they will need to take careful note of the requirements for these programmes in terms of mandatory and optional units.

There is also a Graduate Certificate in Social Work with Children and Families for potential students without an undergraduate qualification.

Department research and industry highlights

Since its inception, the department has developed a reputation for delivering high quality research across a range of areas by engaging with matters of public concern. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 45% of the department’s quality profile was ranked 3-4*.

Course content and structure

The MSc in Social Work is a two-year course that runs over two academic years, and is based at Royal Holloway’s Egham campus. The course is full time and students are expected to attend from 9am - 5pm, both in College and while on placement. The course integrates theory, research, policy and practice in social work, and the academic and practice programmes run concurrently.

- Course structure and organisation
In the first year you'll attend College four days a week during the first term. In the second term you are on placement (70 days) from Monday to Thursday and in College on Fridays. The placement continues in the third term. There are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College.

In year two you'll attend College on Mondays and Tuesdays and are on placement (100 days) the rest of the time. Again there are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College. Please see information about placements for more details regarding the practice element of the course.

Practice Learning 1: preparation for practice. .

Social Policy for Social Workers: gain an understanding of social policy issues related to social work.

Human behaviour in the social environment: gain knowledge about psychology in relation to working with service users.

Child observations: develop observation skills that are relevant to social work with all service user groups.

Theories and knowledge for Social Work practice: gain knowledge of theories and approaches used to understand how to work with service users.

Law for Social Work: learn about law relating to working with services users.

- Second year courses
Critical Social Work: issues relating to working with service users and about different service user groups e.g. adult and child safeguarding, assessments, working with asylum seekers, substance misuse, working with resistant service users.

Choose one of three optional seminars depending on your area of interest: mental health, child and family welfare or vulnerable adults.

Practice education is the teaching, mentoring, supporting and assessing of Social Work students, social care staff, qualified Social Workers and other allied professionals for the purposes of developing competence and raising the quality of service for users and carers.

What you study

The first two modules support you in meeting the requirements of the Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS). This allows you to become a practice educator for social work students on their first (PEPS stage 1) and last placement (PEPS stage 2).

The next two modules focus on planning, implementing and evaluating a learning intervention and help you to develop your skills as a Practice Development Educator.

If you are going to work with NQSW as an ASYE mentor and assessor, module five is designed for you.

In all these modules you will develop your capabilities in relation to teaching, mentoring, supporting and assessing of Social Work students, social care staff, qualified Social Workers and other allied professionals.

Professional leadership also involves developing the learning organisation through working not only with individuals but also with groups, whole organisations and in interagency practice. The last two modules specifically address these leadership skills and enhance your capabilities in working with teams and groups and in supporting workforce development through reflective practice and learning within and across organisations.

To further develop your leadership in social work education and your research capabilities and evidence informed practice skills you will conduct your own research. We also offer CPD modules on interpersonal skills for direct work with adult service users and on the Care Act, including adult safeguarding, which can be taken instead of tow of the modules three to six or seven.

The modules have an academic and professional component. They support you in learning from your work, your reading and your interaction with others and by developing practice, skills and values, always aiming to enhance the experience of students, service users and carers you are working with.

Programme description

This programme is the postgraduate qualification for qualified social workers wishing to practise as mental health officers (MHOs). It has been designed by, and is delivered in partnership with, 12 local authorities in the East of Scotland.

This programme focuses upon the role of the MHO in relation to relevant Scottish legislation. In addition to the taught elements, students undertake two periods of assessed MHO practice.

Under Section 32(2) of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 local authorities have a statutory duty to appoint and provide training for MHOs to undertake mandatory MHO responsibilities, enshrined in legislation: mainly the 2003 Act, but also the Adults with Incapacity Act 2000 and the Criminal Proceedings Act 1995.

This programme’s primary aim is to provide the required MHO qualification in partnership with the East of Scotland MHO Award Partnership.

Programme structure

The programme comprises 12 taught days and eight days of online learning over two semesters.

You will also undertake two periods of assessed MHO practice (thirty two days each), which are organised and supported by your employing local authority.

You can select modules from across our wide range of postgraduate health and social care courses. Modules are delivered in six full-day workshops across the year, meaning your course can fit around your job.

You'll take part in interactive workshops and discussion groups, deliver group projects and even experience simulated practice sessions, to develop your own unique perspectives on current approaches to social care.

Learning alongside students from a variety of health and social care roles provides an opportunity to learn best practice, share experiences, and challenge people's actions and perceptions. This could include colleagues who are in nursing and mental health roles, giving you a broader, more critical view on the topics you are both working with and studying.

Mark Williams has worked for our University for six years as a Lecturer Practitioner and now as a Senior Lecturer, providing specialist knowledge on mental health issues. Experienced in staff development and training, his specific interests focus on developing skills in stress management and resilience in the workplace, and the use of supervision in staff development. Mark uses his broader knowledge of health and social care organisations, as well as voluntary sector providers, to inform his approach to teaching and facilitate learning.

This programme is primarily for social workers who have been working as qualified practitioners for at least a year. Modules are also open to other professionals who are engaged in complex work in related areas, for example health visitors, nurses, police officers, people working in therapeutic roles and those who have responsibility for commissioning services.

The programme will support you to develop skills in critical analysis and reflection on your practice, to engage with current knowledge and to use knowledge and theory to inform your judgments, decision making and practice more widely. You can take a single module or study a number of modules over a maximum of five years and accumulate academic credits which can lead to a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or MA.

The programme is delivered using a blend of onsite teaching and learning supported by a virtual learning environment. You will carry out work relating directly to your current or recent practice, developing analytical and reflexive skills. There is an emphasis throughout the programme on developing skills in engaging with theory and knowledge to inform practice.

Workshops are timetabled to be accessible for students who are travelling to Lancaster from other parts of the UK.

Teaching and learning

We use a range of teaching and learning methods, including face-to-face, blended and online/distance learning.

The course focuses on an active learning approach and is designed to prompt the discovery, processing and application of knowledge through collaboration and cooperation.

You will draw on your own experiences - both academic and work-based - when learning. The course will promote the construction of understanding through task-related activities and reflection.

The School has extensive experience and good practice in online learning, with dedicated e-learning technologists to support you and our staff in making the most of the learning platform.

Coursework and assessment

You can undertake standalone units as short courses for professional development purposes only, or build up a selection of optional and compulsory course units to complete a PGCert or PGDip academic award and, on completion of a dissertation unit, an MSc.

The dissertation unit enables you to consolidate your learning by completing a piece of work from a range of options:
-Research grant proposal
-Full or adapted systematic review
-Report-based dissertation including: public health report/health needs; service development/organisational change audit; evaluation of service delivery/policy

We use a range of assessments throughout the course to assess your knowledge and understanding and to develop your intellectual and practical skills.

On the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Social Work course at the University of Stirling you will be taught by a team of qualified social workers including world leaders in their research field and academics who continue to work in practice alongside their University role. You will enjoy the benefits of smaller class sizes (23-55) with creative approaches to teaching and assessment as well as detailed feedback on your progress. You will experience contributions to teaching by people who have used social work services and carers and on your practice placements, will be supported and assessed by accredited Practice Teachers and Educators. Accreditation

If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Grade B
- Pearson Test of English (Academic): 60 with 56 in each component
- IBT TOEFL: 90 with no subtest less than 20

Careers and employability

- Career opportunities
Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma or the MSc provides the ‘licence to practise’ as a qualified social worker registered with the regulatory council of the country in which they work. The qualification is recognised throughout the UK and for work in community-based teams, hospitals, day and residential centres and voluntary agency projects. In Scotland and Northern Ireland it is also the qualification for social work in prisons and criminal justice teams.
The nature of the work is extremely varied and there is the capacity to move between different work settings throughout your career. Currently, over 80 percent of students find social work jobs within six months of graduating.

- Employability
The MSc/PG Dip in Social Work Studies is a professional course which requires students to undertake along with their academic modules, two practice placements. It is in these placements that our students gain experience in direct work with service users and learn essential transferrable skills for their future employment within the social work profession. During the course they also gain experience of presentation skills, research methodology, as well as being taught specific and relevant skills to prepare them for employment in a variety of social work settings.

- Industry connections
We are fortunate to have strong connections with our partner agencies within a 60-mile radius of the University, who contribute to the teaching on the course and who also provide a range of placements across both statutory and voluntary social work services. Examples of these are: the local authorities in Forth Valley, Fife, and Perth & Kinross, and voluntary agencies such as Barnardos and Multi-Cultural Family Base.
