This course is designed around the four pillars of advanced clinical practice: research, leadership, education and clinical. It facilitates your professional development as an advanced practitioner by providing you with the robust education required to support your role.
The challenges faced by the NHS, including an ageing workforce, rise in chronic conditions and complex co-morbidities and recruitment difficulties, have encouraged the development of advanced roles and innovative attitudes toward the mix of skills in teams with advanced practitioners increasingly seen as key to delivering healthcare services.
The course is clinically focused and helps you develop an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competences – characteristics shaped by the context of your practice. In your third year, you complete a student-negotiated independent integrated portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of the four pillars of advanced practice, and culminates in you developing an article for publication.

How you learn
You learn through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, laboratory-based learning, structured resource-based learning, electronic discussion, action learning sets, masterclasses, formative assessment, distance learning, tutorials, small-group work, research tutorials, practical skills-based sessions and work-based learning. In the Designing Research Project module you can opt for a traditional taught approach, a distance-learning route or a combination of both. You focus on an area of your practice that you can develop in subsequent study which culminates in an article prepared for publication on your specialist subject.
How you are assessed
You are assessed using various methods. These may include written assignments, work-based learning through advanced practitioner competencies, consultation clinics, reflective accounts, portfolio development, critical appraisal and evaluation of the evidence base, modified objective structured long examination review (MOSLER), viva (oral exam), patient case studies to develop and exhibit high levels of clinical reasoning, and practical examinations to demonstrate advanced decision-making skills.
Through this course, you develop your core transferable skills as an advanced practitioner with a high level of clinical autonomy in roles which require assessing, diagnosing, treating and managing people with undifferentiated and/or complex clinical presentations. It is suitable if you are already operating in an advanced clinical role and require advanced skills development.
This Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice provides an academic underpinning that meets the contemporary challenges of advanced clinical practice.
This programme will enable you to practice with a high level of clinical autonomy in roles that require you to assess, diagnose, treat and manage the care of people with undifferentiated and/or complex clinical presentations.
There are two pathways within this Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice: Advanced Practitioner and Advanced Nurse Practitioner. This programme is suitable for you if you are one of the growing number of UK registered practitioners working in (or towards) a role that sits between your own profession and medicine. This is a pathway through the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice which enables the successful student to apply for associate membership with the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) as an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner.

This course is aimed at applicants who are training to become an advanced clinical practitioner in a wide variety of healthcare settings. It is intended for experienced healthcare professionals and for those wishing to formalise and develop their role as an advanced clinical practitioner. The course seeks to focus on decision-making, diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical management. You share learning with others from an extensive range of multi-professional backgrounds to create a vibrant and challenging learning environment.
The core modules focus on the four elements of advanced practice • clinical practice • education • managerial/leadership • research and flexibility is built into this course to enable you to tailor the course and focus on your area of specialism using a wide choice of elective modules.
Recognition of prior credited learning and recognition of prior experiential learning have been adopted for these awards to facilitate entry to the course.

This course is designed to provide a platform of essential skills, supported by a variety of pathways that provides you with a genuine choice. This range seeks to provide you with the opportunity to critically discuss cases, demonstrate knowledge within a simulation and develop critical appraisal skills.
You also take part in practical assessments that are designed to ensure that you are safe and able to make judicious clinical decisions based on your knowledge and understanding. The range of your practice related learning is recorded and documented in the Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPDP), which is a personal record of learning through the course. The format of your e-portfolio will be dependent on local and professional body requirements.

Successful completion of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice will prepare you to seek an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) post or if already employed as a trainee ACP, to formalise this post with a nationally recognised academic qualification. Successful completion also provides the practitioner with the skill set to take on a more strategic leadership role within a secondary or primary health care setting.

The MSc in Advanced Practice offers healthcare practitioners the knowledge and skills to function competently in advanced practice roles.

The programme has three compulsory modules focusing on advancing practice, innovation and research.

As a Masters programme for practitioners with considerable clinical experience, students undertaking this programme will have a capacity for independent study and self -management. The programme is designed to build on existing skills and knowledge at undergraduate and equivalent level and facilitate an independent approach to learning. Teaching methods will support students in becoming lifelong learners who take responsibility for their own learning.
Teaching and learning strategies will be focused on skill development for both the academic and clinical competences required for advanced practice roles. In particular, the tripartite arrangements set up for the Advanced Practitioner Inquiry module recognise the responsibility of the student, lecturer and practice-based mentor to provide and gain experiences and knowledge, which will ensure the student has developed the relevant competences by the end of the programme.
This is a flexible practice-orientated programme, which aims to use innovative ways of linking theory to practice and to encourage the development of higher level analytical skills which will be used to inform practice. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used such as case studies, problem-based learning, IT, student-led clinically based seminars, clinical supervision, following patients’/clients’ care pathways, reflection and skills simulations.
The research activities of staff inform our teaching at all levels in the School and also offer opportunities for our students to work with exceptional researchers in the research methods and dissertation modules.
Assessment methods are linked to students’ practice and work requirements, meaning all learning bears greater returns in the workplace.
The programme aims to keep the assessment load at a manageable level and to use a range of assessment strategies. Whenever possible assessment methods will support day-to-day practice and will test / exam practice applicable knowledge and skills. The aim is for the assessment to be of use within the workplace, as well as providing evidence that the student has achieved the learning outcomes for the module.
A range of assessment methods are used in the various modules that make up this programme. An individual’s variety of assessments will depend to a large extent on the optional modules selected. However, all students will encounter unseen examinations, written assessments and OSCE.
Although some students study this programme to expand their knowledge and skills within their current clinical role, many of our previous graduates are employed as fully autonomous advanced practitioners within a broad range of clinical environments.

It uses a work-based learning approach to develop the higher level skills that will lead to advanced practitioner status and enhance your career prospects.

The facilitation strategies within the course will prepare you for the development of generic and specific practice at advanced level. In essence this course embraces the concept of learning at work to develop new ways of working and will develop the 'advanced practitioner' as outlined by the NHS North West Concordat for Advanced Practice (2009).
You will engage in critical self-assessment of knowledge and skills against appropriate competency frameworks in order to identify, in negotiation with their employer and academic supervisor, an individual learning pathway within the course.
The facilitation strategies for the course are dependent on sound group dynamics, trust and cohesion. The course will commence with an orientation programme, which will explore your expectations, roles and responsibilities, work based mentors and assessors and learning facilitators, along with confidentiality and other issues.

This course is normally commissioned by the North West Workforce Modernisation Hub to meet the needs of modernising the NHS and workforce development. On completion, you will be eligible for a non-medical advanced practitioner role in your own specialist field such as midwifery, accident and emergency, radiography, mental health and intensive care outreach.
Graduates of this course have undertaken a wide variety of advanced practice roles within their own field of practice. Many have made a significant contribution to improving services for their patient group and have demonstrated evidence of the impact of their role.
Whilst many advanced practitioners remain in post, some have chosen to become non-medical consultants.
The emphasis on work-based learning rather than classroom teaching distinguishes this course from more traditional taught courses. The collaboration between the workplace and academic facilitators is innovative and embraces the ethos of overall course philosophy and design and is in accordance with the University strategic objective of strengthening partnerships with partner organisations.
A learning facilitator will be employed with a particular remit to work with practice-based assessors and mentors in order to assure the quality of clinical and work based learning/assessments.
As a graduate of this master's degree, you will be eligible to undertake a PhD or Professional Doctorate.
This programme has been developed in response to an emerging healthcare role, namely the Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). It is designed to equip and enhance the healthcare practitioner with knowledge and skills in the expanding field of advanced practice, especially within secondary care.
The curriculum and competency framework for Advanced Clinical Practitioner training has been developed by The Royal College of Emergency Medicine. This has informed the curriculum content and structure of this programme.
Central to the Advanced Clinical Practitioner educational process is the development of a five year credentialing portfolio, of which a prerequisite is a master's level Advanced Practice award (Royal College of Emergengy Medicine, 2015); this programme aims to fulfil this requirement. The evidence-based credentialing portfolio is not part of the programme and should be completed in partnership with your employing organisation.
