The main assessment method will be via individual assignments and business reports where you’ll be expected to take a deep and critical approach and demonstrate your ability to think widely about the issues presented.

You’ll also be required to submit a 15,000 word, subject-specific dissertation where you’ll explore a digital theme in depth, applying research skills and methodologies that will be covered as part of your dissertation preparation.

You will have the option to undertake a Masters’ consultancy project as an alternative to the dissertation, which will be discussed during the course.

Programme Structure

The MSc degree in Marketing is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months. The programme is divided into two 11-week semesters of taught content, and the summer period, where you can choose between a research dissertation and the practice track. The dissertation allows you to focus on a specific aspect of marketing that is interesting to you, using theory and robust research methods to investigate and generate a much deeper understanding of this area of interest. The practice track allows you take what you have learned about marketing and use this knowledge within your team to come up with a solution for an organisation’s problem.

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track.

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including exams, coursework essays, reports and presentations.

The programme carries exemptions from the Chartered Institute of Marketing exams and has links with the Market Research Society and the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM). Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course is classroom-based and involves group and individual study. It includes field trips to Morgan Motor Cars in Coventry and local marketing communications agencies.

Work experience -

Several units provide opportunities to work on live projects. For the Marketing Consultancy Project, for example, past students have completed research for Symantec, Southampton City Council, the Leprosy Mission, the Nuffield Theatre, Cunard and Microsoft.

Placements are available during the summer vacation, giving you the chance to work closely with a UK business and, by agreement, undertake research for your dissertation.

Assessment -

Assessment is through individual and group work. There are no examinations.

What will I study?

Our marketing Subject Group has established working relationships with key bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM) allowing the course content to be reflective of their syllabus. This is particularly of value if you are intending to progress on to a professional qualification with either body upon successful completion of your Masters.

The MSc Digital Marketing programme demonstrates how new digitally-focused tactics and strategies integrate with more traditional marketing tools and practices to capture new customers, build customer loyalty and provide superior customer service. You will understand the value of, and methods for, determining return on investment of Internet marketing programs, as well as online visitor and buyer behaviour, customer journey mapping, mobile marketing and social media.

You will also have the opportunity to develop a wider understanding of the principles and practice of leading and managing organisations and develop a range of applied research skills.

Following your second semester, you will undertake the Advanced Practice element of this programme which consists of either an internship or an applied group consultancy project where you will work with a real organisation on a live business problem. You will benefit from valuable work experience and developing key business insights.

For those completing an internship, in the remainder of the programme you will complete your research and writing up of your dissertation or undertake a consultancy project. Every student has a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal prior to embarking on the dissertation itself. For those not undertaking an internship, you will undertake an applied management work investigation following your consultancy project.

Advanced Practice stage

The Advanced Practice version of this course offers you a valuable opportunity to secure a work placement or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, and an excellent way to put your learning into practice. This stage of the programme will take place between your second and final semester, and is a semester long (15 weeks) in duration. Internships as part of the Advanced Practice stage may be paid or unpaid. The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation working on consultancy-based projects on real business scenarios. Whether you choose the internship or consultancy project you will successfully develop your business skills and further enhance your employability.

September starts
If you choose to start your Masters in September, your programme will last for up to 22 months. You will have a summer break after Semester 2, and commence your Advanced Practice stage in September.

January starts
If you choose to start your Masters with Advanced Practice in January, your programme will run for 16-18 months. You will commence the Advanced Practice stage of the programme in September, immediately after your second semester. How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops to enable you to grow your knowledge of the business world. In addition, you will be expected to engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Assessment for this programme takes place through a mix of assignments, presentations and group work, giving you multiple methods for you to show your understanding of the course material.

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. There will also be weekly academic support sessions designed to build your confidence and ability as a postgraduate learner. You will also be allocated an individual guidance tutor at induction. You will meet this tutor at regular intervals across your period of study.

- explore relevant social marketing/behaviour change models to provide insight into an audience in relation to the particular issue
- analyse the primary and secondary data, with reference to social marketing theory and literature
- draw sound conclusions from your investigation
- identify realistic and feasible social marketing recommendations, such as the development of a behavioural intervention or a review of the way a public service is provided.

While working on the project you will be offered individual learning support and consultation with the module tutor (face-to-face or by phone).

Social marketing builds on and complements the core discipline of marketing. For health, behaviour change, environment and public communications specialists it is a way of understanding how tools of commercial marketing can help with the development of effective services and interventions based on consumer insight.

The Marketing (Social Marketing) MSc has a strong focus on understanding the motivations of the target audience when planning programmes to influence, and ultimately change, behaviour.

MSc Marketing

The MSc Marketing is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. The course is not restricted to those who have already studied Marketing or related Business subjects. As such it offers students from a wide variety of educational and cultural backgrounds the opportunity to understand and combine academic concepts and practice-related marketing issues. Participants are encouraged to draw on their own backgrounds and any existing management skills and work-based experience throughout this course.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. As a student of Marketing, there are three core topics of study in the Autumn Semester which will provide you with a depth of relevant and up-to-date knowledge. In the Spring Semester MSc Marketing students have to apply this knowledge through a project undertaken for an external company and through an appreciation of Contemporary Issues in Marketing. In addition students may choose two elective modules to study alongside these core modules. The student must also complete an individual dissertation or group research project in a field relevant to the degree pathway.

Course objectives

The MSc provides you with an understanding of the concepts and systems underlying marketing practice and allows you to develop your skills of diagnosis and implementation in marketing management and research processes. On completion you will be able to:
- Nurture and consolidate a customer-focused management approach in a variety of different market settings, organisation types and policy situations
- Design, plan, implement and evaluate research-based marketing strategies
- Gain exposure to ethical issues that arise from marketing activities and to understand the impact marketing has on society in general

Delivery and assessment

The taught modules of the MSc course are delivered using a variety of methods, for example, lectures, tutorials, case studies, role playing, computer simulations, fieldwork exercises, site visits, guest speakers and company projects. Much of the assessment is continuous and may include research reports, essays, briefings, management reports, case analyses, debates, literature reviews, marketing communication plans, poster sessions and presentations. Assessed work is often conducted in groups, as developing teamwork and communication skills are seen as important.
