The aim of the Advanced Critical Care Practitioner programme is to develop a new professional able to safely fulfill a proportion of those roles currently only undertaken by medically qualified intensive care trainees in the National Health Service

This new role is seen to be important in pioneering the shift of work, traditionally done only by doctors, to new, non-medically trained grades of staff. It also addresses the current workforce planning problems in critical care.

This programme allows students to extend their studies beyond the qualification required for registration (PG Diploma: Advanced Critical Care Practitioner) to an MSc, by satisfactorily completing a dissertation.

The programme is 27 months full-time which includes 24 months of academic study and clinical training, followed by 3 months of supervised practice.

Course details

Develop your clinical skills, knowledge and competence as a trainee under the supervision of your consultant intensivist, through our integrated approach to teaching. You’ll study modules that combine both theoretical and clinical components, equipping you with the tools you need to excel as an advanced critical care practitioner. In your first year you’ll study 'core skills for advanced critical care practitioners 1', a module which combines eight weeks of taught theory and 27 weeks of associated clinical practice. You’ll build on this existing knowledge in your second year and in addition, explore the topic of non-medical prescribing.

On completion of PgDip, you have the option to enrol onto the MSc Advanced Critical Care Practitioner programme.

The student-centred Advanced Practice in Health Care postgraduate programme is the only one in Wales to be accredited by the Royal College of Nursing. The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme enables experienced health care professionals from varied clinical backgrounds to develop their skills and knowledge to an advanced level of practice in health care. The MSSc and PGDip in Advanced Practice in Health Care has also been carefully mapped against the prospective Advanced Nurse Practitioner competencies of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The clinical component of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme is taught by a team of active practitioners consisting of: Advanced Nurse Practitioners, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner and a Medical Doctor.

The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme is consistent with current thinking on advanced practice and complies with both the competencies provided by the Royal College of Nursing, 2012 (RCN) and their high standards of course delivery. Students of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme will develop critical and creative thinking skills in relation to clinical practice to an advanced level on the programme. Additionally, students of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme will develop their knowledge and skills with regard to their role as a researcher, educator, manager and leader in health care.

The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme at Swansea University commenced in 1992. Since then it has undergone several changes in order to remain at the forefront of contemporary practices in health care. The modules are designed to enable the clinician to develop knowledge and skills essential to the role of an advanced practitioner (Scottish Government, 2008). Students may also undertake studies for non-medical prescribing.

Staff Expertise

The academic lead for the Advanced Practice in Health Care team works on a national basis with the Welsh Government on advanced practice policy.

The Programme Coordinator is a committee member of the RCN Accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner Educators Group.

Several members of the teaching team for the Advanced Health Care programme have published books and papers on the subject of Advanced Practice in health care.

Swansea was one of the first universities in the UK to offer nurse practitioner/advanced nurse practitioner education. We now have twenty years of experience of doing so. The programme is informed predominantly by the Advanced Practice Toolkit, the Royal College of Nursing document (RCN, 2012) and by working closely with our colleagues in the NHS.

Links with practice in health care

The practitioner teachers work within the local NHS and so provide a link. There is a formal link between the College of Human and Health Sciences and the Bridgend Rehabilitation Team. Several members of the teaching team work on committees with Hywel Dda Health Board and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.

The Advanced Critical Care Practice course is aimed at experienced nurses with at least five years post-registration critical care experience, who are currently working in a critical care area, and are interested in advanced critical care practice.

The MSc Advanced Critical Care Practice will prepare experienced nurses and other appropriate health care professionals in collaboration with the local health service to become a highly skilled and knowledgeable practitioner. The Advanced Critical Care Practice course will draw on the skills and knowledge of those who contribute to the established MSc Advanced Practice in Health Care and will also share the core clinical modules of that programme. A further three new modules have been developed in order to meet the particular needs of the clinician in the critical care environment.

This part-time Advanced Critical Care Practice programme will enable the development of experienced critical care nurses to:

become advanced practitioners in line with current health policy.
provide practitioners with the clinical skills and knowledge to provide safe, ethical, competent, evidence based care and treatment at an advanced level in the critical care environment.
develop the practitioners’ knowledge and skills with regard to their roles as managers and leaders in the context of advanced practice.
develop the practitioners’ knowledge and skills with regard to their role as educators.

The School of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University has been delivering high quality Royal College of Nursing (RCN) accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) education for over 20 years, with demand increasing year on year. While initially the focus was on developing experienced nurses working in primary care settings, this has subsequently expanded to include nurses from secondary and tertiary services.

This course has therefore been developed for both experienced qualified registered nurses and other health professionals working in primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings, who wish to undertake advanced clinical education at master's level. This education will provide high-quality preparation not only for Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) but also for Advanced Clinical Practitioners and health professionals who need to work at a higher level of practice.

RCN Accreditation

While not all of the students undertaking this course will be nurses, other health professionals will benefit from the rigorous standards set by the RCN Accreditation unit for advanced nurse practitioner preparation. Their standards are currently the only quality marker for Advanced Practitioner preparation in England. RCN Accreditation indicates that this course has been evaluated against 15 standards and associated criteria for educational preparation and judged to prepare practitioners to an advanced level (RCN, 2012).

Further, in accordance with the RCN endorsement (2012), the course has also been designed to comply with the Department of Health (England) (2010) position statement on Advanced Level Nursing.

This programme has been accredited by the RCN Centre for Professional Accreditation until 31 August 2021.

Modules

PgDip:

The structure for the course comprises of a prescribed sequence of six compulsory modules, the order depending on the start date (September or January) and the rate of progression.

Each 20 credit module accounts for 200 hours of total student effort. This typically comprises of 36 – 42 classroom contact hours, 14 blended learning activity hours, practice based learning hours (equivalent to a minimum of 3 hours per week) and the remainder for self-directed study.

A range of assessment strategies will be used to reflect the academic, clinical and professional aspects of the programme. This includes use of exams, a written case study, an essay, completion of a Practice Based Learning record including Practice Facilitator feedback and evaluation of practice, OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and production of a clinical portfolio including patient feedback.

The first part of the course includes:

Physiological Principles for Advanced Clinical Practice
Clinical Assessment Skills for Advanced Practice
Non Medical Prescribing

The second part of the course includes:

Clinical Reasoning in Advanced Practice
Leadership and Research Skills for Advanced Practice

There is an option for the final module according to work setting from:

Managing Complexity in Advanced Clinical Practice (Community and Primary Care)
Managing Complexity in Advanced Clinical Practice (Emergency Care)
Managing Complexity in Advanced Clinical Practice (Acute and Critical Care)

The Complexity modules share a common learning framework and approach to assessment but the focus, content and assessment requirements are adapted for the context.

MSc (top-up):

Students can progress to undertake the Dissertation module (60 credits) to gain the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice award.

Teaching and learning

There are a range of facilities to support teaching practice skills and simulation. These include the skills laboratories, clinical and simulation equipment, themed notice boards, resources, anatomical models and the media/skills technicians who maintain the labs and prepare for sessions.

Students are supported by a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) using “Moodle”. Students have access to the VLE using a web browser from home, from campus, or when mobile if they have a smart phone or tablet. Open access computers are provided in the Library and Learning Resource Centre on our Southwark campus. These computers enable access to the internet, email, Microsoft office and other supported software. Direct IT helplines are available to support students

E-learning will complement face-to-face delivery for all modules within the course, with 14 specific hours assigned to blended learning activities in each timetable.

Skills workshop

A four day workshop will continue to be provided mid-way through the course, to give the opportunity for students to practise, consolidate and develop their new skills in a supervised, supportive environment. This is currently used as an effective strategy which is very highly evaluated by our students.

Placements

Practice based learning requirements
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) (2007) identify that learning within the work place is integral to a higher education programme and is demonstrated through engagement within the practice environment. This is particularly important for preparation for a course of this nature; for any students, even those with many years of experience, some of the areas covered by the programme will be new such as history-taking, physical examination skills, ordering and interpreting investigations, making differential diagnoses, pharmacology, prescribing, social sciences and mental health assessment, etc. One of the key requirements for the course is that the practice experience provides learning opportunities that enable students to achieve the course learning outcomes (RCN, 2012) and so in order to ensure this, learning in practice is purposely structured and assessed.

Students will spend the equivalent of 3 hours per week working in a "supernumerary capacity" in order to focus specifically on their clinical and professional development. This requirement extends beyond the University semesters to include the summer periods.

Practice Based Learning is supported through identification of a doctor/qualified Advanced Practitioner to act as the student's "Practice Facilitator" to initially supervise and subsequently support their clinical development. Other experienced senior clinicians can also supervise and support student development.

Evidence of practice based learning (36 hours of direct supervision and 180 hours of indirect supervised clinical practice) and feedback on progress is used as an element of assessment on the following modules: 1. Clinical Assessment Skills for Advanced Practice [Level 7] 2. Clinical Reasoning in Advanced Practice [Level 7] 3. Managing Complexity in Advanced Clinical Practice [Level 7]

The overall total for supervised hours through successful completion of these modules is 648 hours.

Employability

Graduate and employer surveys and feedback indicate our graduates are making a positive impact on patient care and service innovation in general practices, walk-in centres, urgent care centres, minor injury units, emergency departments, projects for refugees, asylum seekers and homeless populations, elderly care facilities, “out of hours” developments, rapid response services, intermediate care teams, prison services, acute medical and surgical teams, critical-care outreach and specialist hospital services.

Some of our graduates are now lead nurses within social enterprises, nurse partners in general practices, nurse representatives on commissioning boards, community matrons and consultant nurses. To date two graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral studies.

The PGCert Advanced Critical Care is designed to enhance the skills of practitioners such as registered nurses and operating department practitioners. It will enable you to become a clinical expert who is able to work safely and effectively in critical care practice, meeting the Step Two and Step Three competencies of the National Competency Framework for adult critical care nurses. A systems-based approach is used throughout the course to reflect the national standards for adult critical care education. You will acquire effective leadership skills and gain the skills and confidence needed to develop others in the delivery of high quality and compassionate care to patients with complex critical care needs.

What will I study?

The programme comprises of two modules which are studied sequentially.

You will begin by focusing on the assessment and management of patients following emergency events which have led to admission to a critical care environment. You will then concentrate specifically upon the development of effective leadership within a critical care environment.

The intention is to develop a practitioner who provides clinical nursing leadership, supervision and support to teams to optimise safe standards of patient care.

How will I study?

There will typically be ten days of face-to-face learning, covering the theoretical aspects of the programme, per module. This will take the form of a combination of lectures, seminars, simulation-based learning, objective structure clinical examinations (OSCE) workshops and tutorials.

The programme also includes a significant proportion of work-based learning during which you will be supported and assessed by a clinical mentor.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of written examinations, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), written assessments and practice-based competency achievements.

Who will be teaching me?

The programme team comprises of front line clinicians from Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and academic experts from Edge Hill University. The research activities and educational roles of the programme team are varied and link to both theory and practice. A range of nationally and internationally recognised clinical experts will also be drawn upon to inform and enhance the learning experience.

What are my career prospects?

Successful completion of this programme will enhance your ability to provide expert care, clinical nursing leadership and effective supervision. The accreditation demonstrates that our Advanced Practice programmes have been rigorously evaluated against 15 standards and associated criteria (RCN, 2012) and judged to prepare Advanced Nurse Practitioners to an advanced level commensurate with the RCN guidance (RCN, 2012).

Why Bradford?

This programme is part of the interdisciplinary Specialist Skills and Post Registration Development (SSPRD) Framework within the Faculty of Health Studies. The Framework enables you to undertake a named award or create an individualised programme of study that will meet either your needs and/or your employer’s needs for a changing diverse workforce within a modern organisation.

The SSPRD Framework offers a structure within which students undertaking the MSc Advanced Practice and named awards have a wide choice of modules. Whilst some students can build their own awards by choosing their own menu of module options the module choice on specialist, named award pathways is more clearly defined. If you are a UK student your programme of study will not only focus on research informed knowledge and understanding but will also extend your skills and competence in practice. International students will focus on modules that assess application to practice through a more reflective approach. The module choice for international students and UK students who are not working in a healthcare setting is restricted to those modules with an ‘international’ version.

Your programme of study and the collection of modules you may choose to study will contextualise your learning by addressing the Aims and Learning Outcomes for the programme which are outlined in the next section of this document. Modules such as the research or work based project modules, for example, enable you to shape your own focus of study within the modules aims and learning outcomes by learning the principles being taught and applying them to your own professional/employment area.

The flexibility offered by the Faculty of Health’s framework will enable you to take forward your current experience whatever the area of your work in collaboration with the University of Bradford. If you are not currently working in a UK healthcare setting you will have your choice limited to those modules with an ‘international’ version. An academic advisor will discuss with you and support your choices.

The Faculty of Health Studies is a major provider of education and training for individuals working within the health, social, independent and community/voluntary sector organisations across the Yorkshire and Humber Region and wider. Learning activities and assessment

Whilst following this programme of study, you will engage with learning through a range of teaching methods. These methods will be dependent on modules studied, however student-centred approaches to learning are a feature of the modules and you will be expected to take responsibility for your learning as you develop your academic skills.

There are a number of approaches to the manner in which modules are delivered and these include block attendance, study day attendance, distance learning and blended learning. When devising your study plan with your academic advisor, you will be informed regarding which delivery methods are utilised for which module.

Teaching and learning

Why Bradford?

This programme is part of the interdisciplinary Specialist Skills and Post Registration Development (SSPRD) Framework within the Faculty of Health Studies. The Framework enables you to undertake a named award or create an individualised programme of study that will meet either your needs and/or your employer’s needs for a changing diverse workforce within a modern organisation.

The SSPRD Framework offers a structure within which students undertaking the MSc Advanced Practice and named awards have a wide choice of modules. Whilst some students can build their own awards by choosing their own menu of module options the module choice on specialist, named award pathways is more clearly defined. If you are a UK student your programme of study will not only focus on research informed knowledge and understanding but will also extend your skills and competence in practice. International students will focus on modules that assess application to practice through a more reflective approach. The module choice for international students and UK students who are not working in a healthcare setting is restricted to those modules with an ‘international’ version.

Your programme of study and the collection of modules you may choose to study will contextualise your learning by addressing the Aims and Learning Outcomes for the programme which are outlined in the next section of this document. Your qualification will be a Master of Advanced Clinical Midwifery Practice

The clinical midwifery specialisation is designed to prepare you as the experienced midwife, registered in your country of origin, for senior management, education, professional and specialist leadership roles in a range of midwifery settings. PART B. Foundations for advanced health care practice

WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?

Individuals who have an undergraduate or higher degree in a relevant subject, normally obtained within the last five years, and experience of working in a health care environment.

Applicants are required to demonstrate that they have worked for a minimum of 575 hours within a paid healthcare role, gained within a year of commencing the programme. This is equivalent to 16 weeks of full-time work and may be achieved through part time-work over a longer period of time.

Applicants also need to be ambitious and passionate about a career in nursing, with the ability and drive to complete the programme in two years.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the country and nurses play a role in the delivery of most healthcare services. Although many qualified nurses work in hospitals, they can also work in general practice surgeries, community settings, home healthcare, outpatient day surgeries, nursing homes, schools, mental health agencies, hospices, the military and industry.

Many of our graduates are initially employed by the NHS Trust in which they had their practice experience, before going on to further studies and employment opportunities. Some nurses develop careers in education or research, promoting advances in many areas of healthcare and health promotion practice.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme aims to:
-Develop confident, competent and critically responsive practitioners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to deliver and lead high quality nursing care across a range of health and social care environments
Enable students to act with professional integrity and demonstrate achievement of the professional standards required by the NMC (2010) to register as a nurse
-Prepare students to deliver and analyse the impact of safe and compassionate evidence based care, whilst demonstrating the values and attitudes in keeping with anti-discriminatory practice and an orientation towards holistic care
-Foster and facilitate partnership working with health and social care professionals, service users, carers and families, acknowledging and promoting the contribution of a collaborative approach to care and the importance of education for health to practice as a registered nurse
-Enable students to contribute to the planning, design and delivery of care by leading, delegating, supervising, evaluating and challenging other nurses and health care professionals’ practice
-Develop the capacity to adapt to change and identify, initiate and lead innovations in practice whilst working within the governance framework
-Facilitate the development of higher level clinical, analytical and reflective thinking skills with the ability to distil research impacts, integrate and combine sources of knowledge and identify new directions for research
-Nurture a commitment to life long and independent learning
-Enable students to critically appraise, plan and lead teams in the application of research to nursing practice

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:

Knowledge and understanding
-Demonstrate a comprehensive and critical understanding of the knowledge and research evidence that underpins practice thus enabling an appropriate response to a wide range of health and dependency needs
-Critically apply knowledge and skills based upon best available evidence in the planning, delivery and evaluation of safe and effective care, accessing or referring to specialist services as required
-Demonstrate an ability to meet complex and co-existing needs of people in their own field of nursing in any setting
-Demonstrate and appraise knowledge of the relationship between common physical and mental health problems in both acute and long terms conditions
-Critically appraise and apply high quality evidence to support and develop practice whilst identifying and proposing areas for further investigation
-Demonstrate the importance of and be able to evaluate safe practice, which is informed by best available evidence and through a critical understanding of risk management strategies, local and national guidelines

-Demonstrate an advanced level of critical thinking and decision making skills in the assessment, documentation and interpretation of a comprehensive systematic nursing assessment that takes account of relevant physical, psychological, social, cultural, spiritual, genetic and environmental factors
-Applies knowledge, synthesises ideas and information in order to generate and evaluate solutions in planned and uncertain situations across a range of health care environments
-Be capable of innovative and creative thinking and develop the ability to improve professional practice and quality outcomes by using a range of methods and clinical governance processes
-Critically apply relevant theoretical and research evidence in the evaluation of nursing interventions and health care provision and evaluate and ensure the use of findings help to improve peoples’ experience in order to shape future services

Who is it for?

MSC in Advance Practice in Health and Social Care (Neonatal Route) is designed for experienced neonatal nurses who are interested in advancing their skills and Knowledge in neonatal medicine.

The modules will equip you to undertake a junior doctor’s role, whilst practising as an advanced neonatal nurse practitioner. Graduates from this programme also gain the necessary skills and knowledge to act as nurse consultant, lead nurse, clinical educator and clinical researcher, within the primary, secondary, or tertiary healthcare settings. Applicants must hold a minimum of Band 6 clinical post in a neonatal setting.

Objectives

As a student on this course you will develop a clear understanding of the underpinning principles of applied anatomy and physiology.

You will be taught decision-making processes based on a solid foundation of pathophysiology and individualised patient assessment that can be directly applied to your workplace. You will be exposed to the principles of applied pharmacotherapy and emerge as a safe prescribing practitioner with the ability to stand within the modern NHS, bridging the gap between the nursing and medical practice.

You will be encouraged to operate as part of a team, learning the principles of team training, human factors and crisis resource management to which you will be exposed within the workplace. You will develop skills in research and applied data analysis as well as a deeper understanding of health and social care settings and the role of an advanced nurse practitioner.

The programme is led by senior neonatologists and academic staff from City, University of London and supported by senior ANNP and neonatal consultants from Barts Health NHS Trust.

Placements

In addition to the taught component, you must spend a minimum of 150 hours per discipline specific module providing direct and indirect clinical care, attending clinical teachings and seminars. You must have your study time approved before commencing the programme.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers students excellent clinical training facilities. You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Science is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio, City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing City students with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies whilst studying.

Teaching and learning

Students will learn from a variety of student-centred and problem based teaching and learning strategies aimed at developing and assessing knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning strategies involve shared learning across the MSC programmes. Discipline specific modules are led by senior neonatologist from Barts Health NHS.

There will be extensive use of City's virtual learning platform - Moodle - for a more interactive learning experience.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used to assess the programme learning outcomes. The choice of assessment method will be influenced by the focus and learning outcomes of the modules. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, portfolios, skills schedules and VIVA VOCE.

Modules

Full-time students will usually study two modules per semester, spend two days a week in classes and two-three days in the clinical area.

Part-time students will usually study one module per semester and spend a minimum of 11.5 hours per week in clinical practice.

-Advanced Physical Assessment of the Newborn and Infant (15 credits)
-Critical thinking and Diagnostic Reasoning across the Lifespan - Neonates (15 credits)
-Neonatal Pathophysiology for Advanced Practice (15 credits)
-Independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing (30 credits)

Career prospects

Graduates will be able to influence neonatal care at both direct and indirect levels through the development of services and the application of research to clinical practice. The course prepares students for a range of roles including advanced neonatal nurse practitioner, educator, researcher nurse consultant and senior nurse manager in all healthcare settings.

Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for advanced practitioner roles in a range of health and social care contexts and qualifies students to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.
