The student-centred Advanced Practice in Health Care postgraduate programme is the only one in Wales to be accredited by the Royal College of Nursing. The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme enables experienced health care professionals from varied clinical backgrounds to develop their skills and knowledge to an advanced level of practice in health care. The MSSc and PGDip in Advanced Practice in Health Care has also been carefully mapped against the prospective Advanced Nurse Practitioner competencies of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The clinical component of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme is taught by a team of active practitioners consisting of: Advanced Nurse Practitioners, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner and a Medical Doctor.
The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme is consistent with current thinking on advanced practice and complies with both the competencies provided by the Royal College of Nursing, 2012 (RCN) and their high standards of course delivery. Students of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme will develop critical and creative thinking skills in relation to clinical practice to an advanced level on the programme. Additionally, students of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme will develop their knowledge and skills with regard to their role as a researcher, educator, manager and leader in health care.
The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme at Swansea University commenced in 1992. Since then it has undergone several changes in order to remain at the forefront of contemporary practices in health care. The modules are designed to enable the clinician to develop knowledge and skills essential to the role of an advanced practitioner (Scottish Government, 2008). Students may also undertake studies for non-medical prescribing.

The academic lead for the Advanced Practice in Health Care team works on a national basis with the Welsh Government on advanced practice policy.
The Programme Coordinator is a committee member of the RCN Accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner Educators Group.
Several members of the teaching team for the Advanced Health Care programme have published books and papers on the subject of Advanced Practice in health care.
Swansea was one of the first universities in the UK to offer nurse practitioner/advanced nurse practitioner education. We now have twenty years of experience of doing so. The programme is informed predominantly by the Advanced Practice Toolkit, the Royal College of Nursing document (RCN, 2012) and by working closely with our colleagues in the NHS.
The practitioner teachers work within the local NHS and so provide a link. There is a formal link between the College of Human and Health Sciences and the Bridgend Rehabilitation Team. Several members of the teaching team work on committees with Hywel Dda Health Board and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board.

The Advanced Critical Care Practice course is aimed at experienced nurses with at least five years post-registration critical care experience, who are currently working in a critical care area, and are interested in advanced critical care practice.
The MSc Advanced Critical Care Practice will prepare experienced nurses and other appropriate health care professionals in collaboration with the local health service to become a highly skilled and knowledgeable practitioner. The Advanced Critical Care Practice course will draw on the skills and knowledge of those who contribute to the established MSc Advanced Practice in Health Care and will also share the core clinical modules of that programme. A further three new modules have been developed in order to meet the particular needs of the clinician in the critical care environment.
This part-time Advanced Critical Care Practice programme will enable the development of experienced critical care nurses to:

The pathway is developed in response to ongoing national and international debate on the modernisation of critical care services and roles.
The MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Critical Care) is designed for experienced critical care practitioners who are seeking to deepen their underpinning knowledge and understanding in the field of critical care. The course will prepare you to become a more senior practitioner within your chosen field. The programme covers core learning in relation to research and evidence based practice, and a specialist module in advanced critical care practice. There are also opportunities to undertake modules in assessment, diagnosis and non medical prescribing. In addition, those working at or towards advanced practitioner roles within the UK can elect to study a programme alligned to the newly agreed standards set out by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.

The PGCert Advanced Critical Care is designed to enhance the skills of practitioners such as registered nurses and operating department practitioners. It will enable you to become a clinical expert who is able to work safely and effectively in critical care practice, meeting the Step Two and Step Three competencies of the National Competency Framework for adult critical care nurses. A systems-based approach is used throughout the course to reflect the national standards for adult critical care education. You will acquire effective leadership skills and gain the skills and confidence needed to develop others in the delivery of high quality and compassionate care to patients with complex critical care needs.
The programme comprises of two modules which are studied sequentially.
You will begin by focusing on the assessment and management of patients following emergency events which have led to admission to a critical care environment. You will then concentrate specifically upon the development of effective leadership within a critical care environment.
The intention is to develop a practitioner who provides clinical nursing leadership, supervision and support to teams to optimise safe standards of patient care.
There will typically be ten days of face-to-face learning, covering the theoretical aspects of the programme, per module. This will take the form of a combination of lectures, seminars, simulation-based learning, objective structure clinical examinations (OSCE) workshops and tutorials.
The programme also includes a significant proportion of work-based learning during which you will be supported and assessed by a clinical mentor.
You will be assessed through a combination of written examinations, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), written assessments and practice-based competency achievements.
The programme team comprises of front line clinicians from Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and academic experts from Edge Hill University. The research activities and educational roles of the programme team are varied and link to both theory and practice. A range of nationally and internationally recognised clinical experts will also be drawn upon to inform and enhance the learning experience.
Successful completion of this programme will enhance your ability to provide expert care, clinical nursing leadership and effective supervision. The range of your practice related learning is recorded and documented in the Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPDP), which is a personal record of learning through the course. The format of your e-portfolio will be dependent on local and professional body requirements.

This course has been designed for experienced Adult or Child nurses working in senior positions or those who are preparing for advanced nurse practitioner, care manager, nurse consultant or clinical leadership roles in primary, secondary, or tertiary healthcare settings.
As part of the course you will be required to complete a clinical work placement with appropriate supervision for physical assessment; therefore applicants must be nurses working in senior clinical positions.

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers students excellent clinical training facilities. You will have access to a simulated six-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, will allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

You will learn from a variety of student-centred and patient-focused teaching, learning and assessment strategies aimed at developing and assessing different knowledge, skills and attitudes. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, portfolios, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).
