Specialising in adult nursing means that you will work with adults of all ages, with diverse health conditions. Nursing is concerned with the holistic care of an individual. The practitioner employs skills and knowledge to promote and maintain health and to restore physical, social and psychological wellbeing wherever possible. Adult nursing strives to maintain the dignity and independence of the client, supporting individuals to achieve as full a recovery as is possible.

Communication skills are essential to set patients at ease under pressurised and sometimes difficult situations, as is the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care offered to each patient. You must be willing to take responsibility for someone else’s health and wellbeing, and show the compassion needed to ensure a good nurse-patient relationship.

Unlike many of the older, traditional nursing schools, at Essex you receive a fresh, contemporary and relevant nurse education programme, integrated into a University that is one of the UK's top ten research institutions. We specialise in applied, multidisciplinary research, and also host the NIHR Research Design Service for the East of England.

There are four main types of pre-registration nursing degree – child, learning disabilities, adult and mental health. As we focus solely on adult nursing and mental health nursing, you can come to us knowing that you will graduate with the best training possible in your field.

Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement.

You can choose to study this course at either our Colchester campus or our Southend campus - and your placements will correspond to the campus you choose. Colchester students will have placements in north Essex, while Southend students will have placements in south Essex.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the course will allow you to register as a qualified nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The School of Health and Human Sciences is located at two sites; in the Kimmy Eldridge building at our Colchester campus and in the Gateway Building at our Southend campus.

Within our School of Health and Human Sciences, we have a range of specialist clinical laboratories and IT facilities to assist you with effective learning and the acquisition of new skills.

We offer excellent physical and online resources in terms of libraries, computer labs, datasets, archives and other research materials. You can take advantage of our links with the Institute of Social and Economic Research, which conducts large-scale survey projects, many for government, EU and other public agencies, and has its own library. The UK Data Archive is also based at our Colchester Campus and stores national research data.

Adult nurses help care for people over 18 who are ill, injured, or have physical disabilities. They check patients' progress and decide with doctors what care to give, as well as advising and supporting patients and their relatives. Although, demanding and intense work, it can also be exceptionally rewarding.

This innovative two year course will prepare you for a career in a wide range of rewarding adult nursing opportunities across both general medical and surgical wards as well as specialist units such as Accident and Emergency or intensive care. Many of our graduates take their first posts as qualified practitioners in the NHS Trusts and hospitals in which they gained experience during their training.

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to work with qualified practitioners both to gain experience of the differing clinical environments, and to appreciate the expertise of these specialist nurses whilst on placement.

Top-up to MSc

By adding the research element of a dissertation (an extended and independent piece of written research), you'll be able to graduate with a Masters-level qualification.

Placements

During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

At LSBU, you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations. If you are based at our Southwark campus you are able to experience placements at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, University College London Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. You will also undertake a placement in the community. If you are based at our Havering campus you are able to experience placements at Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital; along with a placement within the community.

Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look small groups of patients making confident, proactive decision for their health management with little supervision.

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure you receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Adult Nursing skills laboratories
We have two adult nursing skills laboratories at our Southwark campus and three at our Havering campus. Our nursing skills labs; set up like hospital wards are used by all student nurses and midwives throughout their courses. They learn manual handling and basic life support skills and skills that are specific to their field of nursing or midwifery.

SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins: SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a student's actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or converted to female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse.

Employability

The course will enable you to develop a wide range of employability skills through the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching which leads to a professional qualification leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

This course will prepare you for a career in a wide range of rewarding adult nursing opportunities across both general medical and surgical wards as well as specialist units such as Accident and Emergency or intensive care. Many graduates take their first post as qualified practitioners in the NHS Trusts and hospitals which they gained experience during their training. Recent graduates have achieved prominent employment positions in areas such as advanced clinical practice, management of health services or as researchers or lecturers.

Successful graduates of the PgDip can top-up to MSc in one year and will be qualified to study a range of further specialist postgraduate pathways. Adult nursing is a person-centred profession with the primary aim of promoting the wellbeing and social inclusion of all people through improving or maintaining physical and mental health (Department of Health, 2010). Adult nurses provide care for people over the age of 18 and increasingly for older people with complex conditions. They may also care for people with a mental health, learning disability or children. Adult nurses work in a range of settings including A&E, critical care, medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units, GP practices, healthcare centres, hospices and in people's own homes.

What will you study?

The first year is divided into two parts. In part one you will undertake a bridging module introducing you to the foundations of nursing and healthcare. In part two you will look at the context of nursing within a variety of client groups within your specific field of nursing.
In your second year (part three) you will learn about the complexities of nursing at an individual and organisational level as well as preparing for your transition to registered nurse.

Objectives

The Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Nursing prepares you for a fulfilling and rewarding career caring for adults of all ages who have had injuries, suffered accidents, acquired disease or have a range of healthcare needs.

Adult nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession; as an adult nurse you need to be committed and dedicated with the willingness to give time to others with care and compassion. You will learn the skills of clinical decision-making that is supported by knowledge and experience of providing healthcare to a diverse population.

The course combines theoretical study with clinical experience gained at London’s leading hospitals, trusts and community settings. The School's facilities feature an excellent Clinical Skills Centre, including simulated wards, where you can prepare for your practice experience. Whilst on clinical placements you will also benefit from exposure to the capital’s diverse population.

Placements

Half of your time as a student will be spent gaining practice experience through laboratory based simulated practice and through clinical placements in health care settings.

Simulated Practice

Simulated practice is a significant component of your practice learning experience and will provide opportunities for you to rehearse a range of practical nursing skills and enact scenarios in a realistic, but safe simulated environment in our excellent clinical laboratories supervised by lecturers. Through this experience you will develop confidence as you prepare for your practice experience and gain a sense of purpose and belonging to the nursing profession.

Clinical Placements

Clinical placements can take place in a variety of settings such as:
-General Practice (GP) surgeries.
-Nursing homes.
-NHS and independent sector hospitals.
-Patients' homes and in community settings.

Placements take place within our partnership of healthcare providers in Central and North East London who provide you with clinical placements, including Barts Health NHS Trust, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Academic facilities

Facilities at City include the excellent fully equipped Clinical Skills Centre in addition to an interactive Biological Sciences Laboratory.

Many of the clinical practice placements offer the opportunity for students to experience environments where clinical diagnostic tests are performed and in addition operating theatres where surgical procedures are carried out.

The course is taught by academics who:
-Have a background and expertise in adult nursing and an up-to-date knowledge of clinical practice.

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship-centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme with students expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week. All modules are compulsory.

Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM001 Relationship Centred Care and Concepts of Biology for Health (Theory)
-HSM101 Engaging in Practice 1 (Practice)

Part Two is 37 weeks and focuses on acute and long term care. This part includes the following modules:

Career prospects are excellent with Postgraduate Diploma students securing employment as Band 5 Staff Nurses with Trusts including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust.

Nursing is a lifelong career and there are excellent progression opportunities in clinical management, education, research and clinical specialisms and many and varied career paths ranging from sister/ charge nurse, community nurse to nurse director. Specialisms include the following:

Communication and team working are key in health and social care and you will develop a range of interpersonal skills that enable you to work effectively with a wide diversity of clients and within complex settings.

You will rehearse practical skills in our skills suites, allowing you to integrate your theory into practice in a safe environment. You will also experience at least 2,300 hours of placements which is required by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC); because of this requirement, the course duration is a minimum of three years to ensure you gain this valuable experience. The health economy is rapidly changing and future nurses are likely to be located in a broader range of workplaces. Your placement opportunities will therefore be in a diverse range of settings which include the growing independent sector as well as care within the community, preparing you to function effectively and meet the health care needs of an increasing ageing population.

This is a pre-registration nursing course that has been adapted for those students who already have a degree. We also offer a BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing if you don't have a degree. Approach to assessment

You will be asked to produce a number of different types of written work throughout your study, including critical appraisals, reflective work and case studies. Some assignments will also require you to present work to faculty staff and peers.

Assessment of practice learning occurs both within the 'practice modules' - Professional Practice Experience (PPE) modules - and also in the 'practice-related' modules. All students have a Practice Assessment Document which contains a competency framework to assess practice.

As a postgraduate student with more highly developed academic skills and a self-directed approach, you are expected to work to produce material that is creative and original. You will be encouraged to try out the creative application of new or existing ideas or theory to address contemporary practice problems, health and social care policy or health and social care needs.

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at Oxford University, and with research teams from many other UK and international centres.

Clinical, decision-making and leadership skills are developed progressively throughout the programme. Biosciences and psychosocial, spiritual, ethical and legal aspects of care inform a holistic approach to care, alongside a strong emphasis on interprofessional learning.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over two academic years; over this period students must gain 2,300 hours of theory and 2,300 hours of practice for NMC registration. The programme is divided into modules.

On successful completion of the programme students may apply for registration with The Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse.

Who is this programme for?

Individuals who have an undergraduate or higher degree in a relevant subject, normally obtained within the last five years, and experience of working in a health care environment.

Applicants are required to demonstrate that they have worked for a minimum of 575 hours within a paid healthcare role, gained within a year of commencing the programme. This is equivalent to 16 weeks of full-time work and may be achieved through part time-work over a longer period of time.

Applicants also need to be ambitious and passionate about a career in nursing, with the ability and drive to complete the programme in two years.

Career opportunities

Nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the country and nurses play a role in the delivery of most healthcare services. Although many qualified nurses work in hospitals, they can also work in general practice surgeries, community settings, home healthcare, outpatient day surgeries, nursing homes, schools, mental health agencies, hospices, the military and industry.

Many of our graduates are initially employed by the NHS Trust in which they had their practice experience, before going on to further studies and employment opportunities. Practice

Practice experiences will take place across the beautiful North Yorkshire Region offering you experiences of delivering care with diverse communities in a range of health and social care environments. You will begin your practical experience three months into the programme. You are required to undertake a total of four periods of assessed practice over the two years.

The Department of Health Sciences has adopted a base and spoke model of practice experience to ensure your practice experience focusses on the learning outcomes you need to achieve. You will be allocated to a base practice experience area, which may be a day unit, clinic, community nursing team or hospital ward. From there, through negotiation, you will access spoke areas which will support and supplement your learning. This will provide you with some flexibility to follow the journeys of patients, clients, service users and carers.

Support

The programme is designed to ensure that you are well supported throughout the two years. In practice you have access to nurse mentors and link lecturers who will help to ensure you maximize your opportunities for learning. In theory you are allocated personal supervisors who will provide you with support for your academic work. Additionally Student Services acts as a first point of contact if you need information or assistance with a problem.

MSc in Nursing Practice

After successfully completing the Postgraduate Diploma with Professional Registration (Adult) you may, at a later stage, top up your qualification to an MSc in Nursing Practice through the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) route by undertaking a 60 credit Service Improvement Project. If you do decide to top up to the MSc, the fees for this additional element of study will need to be paid either by you or your employer.

Our PGDIP in Adult Nursing is an accelerated 2-year programme, which is supported by the NHS and designed in partnership with practice colleagues and service users to provide a high quality, flexible, student-centred and patient-focused educational experience. This will develop practitioners that are highly employable and recognised for the additional academic credibility they achieve.

We have one intake in September 2017, which build on the core values of the NHS constitution and fully prepares students for the challenges of modern nursing practice. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will gain both an academic award (PGdip) and eligibility to register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council as an adult nurse. Support is available from a range of sources to guide students’ academic and practice development throughout the programme.

This course is 50% theory and 50% clinical practice with placements in both the hospital and community settings. You will also have the opportunity to gain the added value of an additional award in acute illness management (AIMS©) at the end of the programme.

The Department of Health consultation for students starting in September 2017 has significantly changed the way healthcare courses will be funded. Health Education England have allocated a small number of capped funded places for new starters in 2017 for tuition fees and bursary. However, Manchester Metropolitan University has not been allocated any funding for PG Diplomas starting in September 2017, students will be required to pay their own tuition fees for this course.

Assessment

The assessment strategy for this course is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; foster active learning, be leaner-centred in approach and draw on expertise-by-experience. The choice of assessments is determined by their fitness for purpose i.e. to evidence achievement of unit learning outcomes at Masters level (Level 7).

Adult Nursing aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. The Adult Nursing course has been developed to prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with adults with a variety of care needs across a range of dependencies, with a wide diversity of needs and in a varied range of care settings as well as their carers and supporters.

The Adult Nursing course provides students with the skills, knowledge and experience to care for adults across a range of health care settings. The course focuses on acute illness, older people and the care and management of patients with long term conditions. Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The Nursing (Adult) MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. This course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

The Masters in Nursing (MN) enables you to achieve a post-graduate qualification and professional registration. The MN underpins all aspects of nursing practice and leads to eligibility for registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council professional register in one of the four fields: Adult Health /Child Health /Mental Health /Learning Disability.

It is a full-time, three year, post-graduate degree course which aims to provide you with a range of learning, teaching and assessment experiences that will enable you to become a critically reflective, post-graduate nurse with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of your respective field of nursing.

Throughout this programme you will be in University studying theory (50%) and then have the opportunity to engage in clinical-based learning (50%) in a variety of hospital and community settings within the Lothian and Borders area. What you'll learn

Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence in nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever changing health care arena.
Our nursing programme has been written to take account of the key drivers in health care at local, national and international levels and was developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

During each year of the programme you will learn alongside colleagues in all fields of nursing, and will work with peers from the MN and the undergraduate nursing programme. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills, knowledge and competences to work within a variety of health-care settings. There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. On completion, this course will support you to become a creative, innovated and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice.

Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

We offer post graduate pre-registration nursing in two fields of nursing (adult and mental health) and have excellent links with the NHS and other care providers. Nursing skills are taught and assessed in four laboratories. Learning clinical skills in the laboratories ensures that students develop competence in a safe, protected environment. In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working, there is shared learning between nursing and midwifery students in areas such as biological and social sciences, informatics, research, ethics, health policy and management.

This programme offers both practice and theoretical learning in a variety of institutional and community settings. For adult nursing, placements are in hospitals and the local community, such as GP practices and with community nurses and health visitors. Mental health nursing placements are much more community-focused, in clinics, forensic services and health centres.

Applications for these programmes should be made via UCAS. Please note that this programme is not available to international students.

NO TUITION FEES to pay for UK and EU students - our NHS bursary is available to Nursing programme applicants who have lived in UK for last 3-years. To receive funding from the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme, students will have to commit to working in Wales for 2 years following the completion of their Nursing (Adult) course. 

EMPLOYABILITY: 99% of Nursing graduates are employed in a professional or managerial job 6 months after graduating (Unistats 2016).

AVERAGE EARNINGS: Nursing graduates can expect a starting salary of £22,128 rising to £34,000 for a highly-experienced staff nurse.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: The Nursing programme is open to graduates with a 2:2 degree or above who have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience of working in health related environments, such as care homes, hospitals, community or homecare.

ACCREDITATION: Nursing graduates will be eligible to apply for Registered Nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

MSc Nursing (Child) Course Structure

The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Child) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Child) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Child) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Child) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Child) is made up of five modules:

Year 1:

Module 1 – Introduction to Nursing

Module 2 - Living with Long-term and Chronic Conditions

Year 2

Module 3 – Managing Complex Care in Deteriorating Situations

Module 4 – Leadership & Decision-making

Module 5 – Dissertation

Teaching is based on a social model and Nursing (Child) students will be taught to appreciate healthcare and the well- being of the patient in the wider context. A range of teaching methods will be adopted in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. These will include; lectures, guided reading, seminars, discussion groups, scenarios, distance learning, practical sessions, simulated practice and Enquiry Based Learning.

Assessments will enable Nursing (Child) students to develop creative, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Nursing (Child) students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.

Fees and Funding for Nursing (Child) Course

There are no tuition fees to pay for the MSc Nursing (Child) for UK / EU students.

To be eligible for WEDS funding international students must have residency for 3 years (working and living) in the United Kingdom. EU area students can also apply. Standard fees apply for international students.

Careers in Nursing (Child)

Child Nursing graduates care for children and young people in hospitals in their own home, special schools, and children’s centres.

Nursing graduates can expect a starting salary of about £21,000 rising to £34,000 for a highly-experienced staff nurse. Specialist nurses and practice managers can earn £45,000. Pay scales from the Royal College of Nursing website can be viewed here.

There has never been a more exciting time to join the nursing profession. Registered nurses can work in a variety of environments including hospitals, GP surgeries, clinics, nursing and residential homes and voluntary organisations.

Nursing (Child) graduates will be eligible to register as nurses for work in EU and EEA. UK trained nurses are very much sought after in Australia and New Zealand.
