This programme is specifically to train teachers wanting to teach in education and training sector educational settings, such as further education colleges, and adult and community settings. Due to government changes, if you complete this award you may also be able to gain employment in a secondary school setting, particularly in the post-14 age range - subject to the completion of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS).

Course details

Demand for places on this course is very high, so we encourage you to submit your application as early as possible. The programme is delivered full time and part time. The full-time programme is a pre-service award for those intending to teach in the sector and is offered at Teesside University Middlesbrough campus, Darlington College and Stockton Riverside College. The full-time award, delivered at Stockton Riverside College, is specifically for those wanting to be adult literacy or numeracy specialists. The part-time award is offered at Darlington College, Hartlepool College of Further Education, Redcar & Cleveland College, and Stockton Riverside College. 

If you are an international student, you are eligible to apply for the programme delivered at Teesside University campus only (not the colleges).

The part-time programme is available as an in-service award if you are currently employed in teaching or training in the sector. If you are not in a paid teaching post, a pre-service part-time route is available but you must be able to find your own teaching practice. We promote the values of reflective practice, equality of opportunity, inclusiveness and learner autonomy. Both full-time and part-time routes cover a range of topics including planning and assessment, theories and principles for enabling learning, curriculum design and development plus being a professional in the sector. You study specialist modules if you choose to follow the literacy or numeracy subject-specialist programme. Your award title on qualification will also reflect your chosen specialist route rather than the generic award title. Professional accreditation

This qualification meets the national units of assessment and overarching professional standards. It also meets the national requirements for practitioners carrying out the full teaching role. 

On completion of the full award, you will have met the national requirements for the Diploma in Education and Training and will be in a position to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS). Please note this course does not confer Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

What you study

You study a range of modules that takes you from preparing to teach through to more advanced practice skills. You also study issues affecting the education and training educational sector, such as educational policy, quality assurance, and your own personal and professional development needs. 

If you are studying a subject-specialist award, there are modules that develop your subject knowledge and understanding as well as modules that focus on how you develop this into subject-specialist pedagogy in your teaching practice. 

All programmes are mapped to the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training – England (The Education and Training Foundation) and are in line with national requirements for Award in Education and Training, Certificate in Education and Training, and Diploma in Education and Training. These are referred to throughout your progression through the programme, as they are the occupational standards used throughout the sector.

Teaching

How you learn

Generally you are taught through seminars, lectures and workshops. A range of specialist tutors contribute to your lecture and seminar sessions – these are supported through our virtual learning environment where you access a range of resources to support course activities.

The course has a substantial element of teaching practice – vital to your learning and development as a practitioner. In addition, you are encouraged to develop your teaching skills by observing experienced practitioners, using simulations and/or training classes, and by watching good practice videos.

Your practice mentor supports your time on placement and helps you develop reflective practice skills as an aid to your learning and professional development. The course also helps develop your employability skills. You develop an individual learning portfolio which holistically tracks your development over the programme with specific reference to your academic and teaching skills.

How you are assessed

Typically you are assessed by a combination of written assessments, reflective teaching journals, teaching portfolios, and observations of your teaching practice.

Within the academic year there is a compulsory (assessed) student conference where you work with fellow subject specialists. If you are already in employment you must make arrangements to attend. The date for the event is identified within induction week.

Employability

Work placement

You must complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice in an appropriate teaching environment. If studying part time these practice hours are split into 40 hours in Year 1 and 60 hours in Year 2. 

At your teaching practice a placement mentor supports you with orientation, with the school/college, and beginning your teaching ideas. This mentor helps you transfer your knowledge from theory to practice, observes your practice and gives you formative and summative feedback towards module outcomes.

Career opportunities

Appropriate careers are in the full teaching role in learning and skills sector educational contexts. Our graduate employment record is very good. Students go on to work in a variety of professions including further education colleges and training organisations. 

Some students gain employment in secondary schools or higher education. Other students have taken the opportunity to further their studies on relevant continuing professional development or masters’ courses at the University.

Why this programme

-The programme is open to people with little or no experience in teaching adults, but also works well for those with more knowledge of the field.
-The programme combines a good background in the theories and history of teaching adults with a substantial placement component.
-The placement allows you to work with an adult education agency for 100 hours, and counts as two courses in the programme. You can choose your own type of organisation for your placement, and we will help to set it up.
-Students tell us that they come out of the programme with much stronger knowledge of teaching adults as well as a better understanding of what that means to their teaching practice.

Programme structure

You will take a taught component of four core courses alongside the work placement. For the MSc you will also complete a supervised research project of between 12,000 and 15,000 words.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education Teachers of English (Literacy) offers initial teacher education for those who wish to be employed in a variety of post-16 educational and training establishments and will eventually enable the holder to submit evidence for Professional Formation and Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status once registered with the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). This course is designed to meet the ETF Professional standards and has at its heart a model of Critical Reflective Practice that facilitates an ongoing professional dialogue between student, mentor and tutor. The course received a Grade 2: Good in the Ofsted Inspection March 2013.

This is an integrated route to train teachers of English/Literacy. There is also a generic route designed for a wide range of post-compulsory subjects.

This postgraduate qualification offers 60 Masters-level credits that can be used towards any of our Masters degrees in the field of education.

This is NOT an appropriate training course for applicants who wish to teach in primary or secondary schools. It does not confer qualified teacher status (QTS) and does not provide the participant with a DfE number.

What happens on the course?

​Our PCE teacher training programmes seek to prepare student teachers to develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities required of a professional teacher in the post compulsory sector. There are two subject specialist modules which support and develop your background knowledge in key issues in English/ Literacy knowledge. One introduces you to issues relating to aspects of grammar as well as speaking, listening, reading and writing. The other module focuses on the sociolinguistic aspect of learning and using English. These modules will also encourage you to evaluate your practice to improve your English/literacy teaching.

This level 7 single practice module will provide you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care relevant to critically ill patients with haemodynamic and respiratory compromise.

P44010 Dimensions of Adult Intensive care practice (40 credits)
This level 7 double practice module provides you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care. This relates directly to the management of critically ill patients with neurological, renal or gastrointestinal compromise and those with multiple traumatic injuries.

Teaching and learning

This programme's teaching, learning and assessment strategy reflects its student centred, patient-centred and practice-focused approach. Each module strikes a good balance between structured learning activities and private study. You will have opportunities for sharing existing and developing skills while increasing your knowledge and experience. In further education, literacy is an essential life skill to master, and it is your role to educate and inspire.

If you want to become a teacher of literacy in further education colleges our postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) in the Lifelong Learning Sector (LLS) will give you the skills you need. Your training will include teaching and classroom management, leading to the essential qualifications required to achieve your goals. 

The quality of teacher training in Further Education was rated as "Good" in Ofsted report for Initial Teacher Education 2016. The report stated that "Trainees plan and teach lessons that are innovative and supported by the educational theories they have learned."

Our PGCE (LLS) focuses on a career teaching in colleges, adult education centres, art colleges, health care or community organisations. 

Our programme also encompasses training for public services and a wide range of commercial and voluntary organisations.

Teaching and learning

Our programme will teach you how language and literacy is acquired and learned. You will review and analyse a variety of innovative approaches and resources for the teaching of literacy. This will include the four key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

This is taught in a range of contexts and embedded models. During your time with us you will plan, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning strategies. Most importantly you will learn how to generate enthusiasm for language learning, as well as how to challenge and empower your learners.

Degree structure

Our core programme will see you based in a placement college where you will participate in a range of professional activities.

In Phase 1, you will be there for three days a week to observe and undertake teaching in your subject area. For the remaining two days, you will be based at the university campus.

In Phase 2, you will attend your placement college for four days a week, and the university for the last day. In total you will complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching experience.

By the end of your teacher training with us you will have gained an awareness of a range of key theoretical and practical issues relating to the teaching of literacy in the lifelong learning sector.

Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement.

You can choose to study this course at either our Colchester campus or our Southend campus - and your placements will correspond to the campus you choose. Colchester students will have placements in north Essex, while Southend students will have placements in south Essex.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the course will allow you to register as a qualified nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

About this degree

This programme will give students critical insight into a range of theories, perspectives and approaches for studying policies and practices in professional education and training and how they might apply these in their workplace. Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (60 credits), and either two optional modules (60 credits), and a dissertation (60 credits), or three optional modules (90 credits) and a report (30 credits).

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culmintates either in a dissertation of 20,000 words (60 credits) or a report of 10,000 words (30 credits).

Teaching and learning

Teaching is delivered both face-to-face and online and includes lectures, plenary discussion/question and answer sessions, small group work and tutorials. In addition, online students use whiteboard, audio channel, text chat, polling, discussion groups, desktop sharing and breakout rooms. Assessment is by written assignments, portfolio and a dissertation or report.

The duration of your training will provide you with hands on experience and the time to put your theoretical learning into practice, alongside highly skilled Adult Nurses in acute and rehabilitation services as well as specialist fields such as intensive care nursing, emergency care and public health.

We are a multicultural country that attracts students from around the world. 

Our PGCE Lifelong Learning Sector (LLS) will give you vital skills to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). This full time programme will lead to a qualification for teaching in further education colleges.

While training with us you will gain essential teaching skills and classroom management, the essential qualifications required to achieve your goals. Our PGCE LLS focuses on a career teaching in colleges, adult education centres, art colleges, health care or community organisations. Our programme also encompasses training for public services and a wide range of commercial and voluntary organisations.

The quality of teacher training in Further Education was rated as "Good" in Ofsted report for Initial Teacher Education 2016. The report identified "the good understanding trainees develop of cultural diversity and of individual learners' needs in the providers where they are placed or employed" as a key strength.

Teaching and learning

Our programme teaches you how language and literacy is acquired and learned. You will review and analyse a variety of innovative approaches and resources for the teaching of literacy and ESOL. This will include the four key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This is taught in a range of contexts and embedded models.

During your time with us, you will plan, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning strategies. Most importantly you will learn how to generate enthusiasm for language learning, as well as how to challenge and empower your learners.

Degree structure

Our core programme will see you based in a placement college where you will participate in a range of professional activities.

In Phase 1, you will be there for three days a week to observe and undertake teaching in your subject area. For the remaining two days, you will be based at the university campus. You will complete between 25 and 50 hours of teaching during this time.

In Phase 2, you will attend your placement college for four days a week, and the university for the last day. In total you will complete a minimum of 125 hours of teaching experience.

By the end of your teacher training with us, you will have gained an awareness of a range of key theoretical and practical issues relating to the teaching of literacy and ESOL in the lifelong learning sector.

This MA explores language from a wide range of perspectives. It is designed to develop understanding of key concepts and issues related to applied linguistics and English language education globally, while also engaging students in the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world situations, contexts and issues in which language plays a crucial role.

About this degree

This programme will provide students with insight into applied linguistics and language education from global, bilingual, cognitive, discourse, and socio-cultural perspectives. It will also develop students' capacity to analyse, evaluate and synthesise primary and secondary sources as well as helping them to design research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

All students are required to write a 2,500-word research proposal which leads to the submission of a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic in applied linguistics.

Teaching and learning

This programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, projects, supervisory tutorials, student presentations, and student-led discussions. Within tutor-led sessions, students often engage in individual, pair and group tasks which are then fed back to the plenary. Students are assessed through written coursework, oral presentation, and the dissertation. Alternative modes of assessment may be a feature of some modules.
