What you study

Teaching

Generally you are taught through seminars, lectures and workshops. A range of specialist tutors contribute to your lecture and seminar sessions – these are supported through our virtual learning environment where you access a range of resources to support course activities.

The course has a substantial element of teaching practice – vital to your learning and development as a practitioner. In addition, you are encouraged to develop your teaching skills by observing experienced practitioners, using simulations and/or training classes, and by watching good practice videos.

Your practice mentor supports your time on placement and helps you develop reflective practice skills as an aid to your learning and professional development. The course also helps develop your employability skills. You develop an individual learning portfolio which holistically tracks your development over the programme with specific reference to your academic and teaching skills.

Typically you are assessed by a combination of written assessments, reflective teaching journals, teaching portfolios, and observations of your teaching practice.

At the end of the year there is a compulsory (assessed) student conference where you work with fellow subject specialists. If you are already in employment you must make arrangements to attend.

Employability

You must complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice in an appropriate teaching environment. If studying part time these practice hours are split into 40 hours in Year 1 and 60 hours in Year 2.

At your teaching practice a placement mentor supports you with orientation with the school/college and beginning your teaching ideas. This mentor also helps you transfer your knowledge from theory to practice, observes your practice and gives you formative and summative feedback towards module outcomes.

Appropriate careers are in the full teaching role in learning and skills sector educational contexts. Our graduate employment record is very good. Students go on to work in a variety of professions including further education colleges and training organisations.

Some students gain employment in secondary schools or higher education. Other students have taken the opportunity to further their studies on relevant continuing professional development or masters’ courses at the University.

Specialising in adult nursing means that you will work with adults of all ages, with diverse health conditions. Nursing is concerned with the holistic care of an individual. Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement.

You can choose to study this course at either our Colchester campus or our Southend campus - and your placements will correspond to the campus you choose. Colchester students will have placements in north Essex, while Southend students will have placements in south Essex.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the course will allow you to register as a qualified nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Adult nursing is a person-centred profession with the primary aim of promoting the wellbeing and social inclusion of all people through improving or maintaining physical and mental health (Department of Health, 2010). Adult nurses provide care for people over the age of 18 and increasingly for older people with complex conditions. They may also care for people with a mental health, learning disability or children. Adult nurses work in a range of settings including A&E, critical care, medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units, GP practices, healthcare centres, hospices and in people's own homes.

What will you study?

The first year is divided into two parts. In part one you will undertake a bridging module introducing you to the foundations of nursing and healthcare. In part two you will look at the context of nursing within a variety of client groups within your specific field of nursing.

The programme covers the skills needed for teaching and classroom management and helps students to explore the theory underpinning teaching and learning. The core programme takes place in a placement college. Student teachers complete a minimum of 125 hours of teaching experience during the programme. You will be supported and assessed by a mentor as well as your tutor at the university. You will attend the university for the remaining two days of the week. You will complete between 25 and 50 hours of teaching during this phase. You will spend around 50% of your time on clinical placements. Your practice experience will take place in a variety of settings such as specialist units, hospital wards and primary care settings such as Health Centres and patients/service users’ homes.

Most placements are within our 'community of practice', a partnership of healthcare providers within North East London - allowing you to become familiar with the needs of the local community and its healthcare providers.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated six-bed high-dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium-fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Sciences is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio - City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while you study.

Teaching and learning

The teaching on the MSc course includes lecture, seminars, laboratory practicals, enquiry-based learning, practice experience, simulated practice, personal and professional development groups, meetings and online activities.

Assessment

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the MSc, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. The practice element is assessed by the development of a record of achievement in practice and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations. Modules are also assessed through essays, seminars or presentations.

As part of the MSc you are expected to complete a dissertation, this will involve a systematic literature review of integrated practice, which is the foundation of this programme and the future of contemporary nursing practice.

Your final degree classification is calculated from the first, second and final years.

Clinical Placements

Clinical placements can take place in a variety of settings such as:
-General Practice (GP) surgeries.
-Nursing homes.
-NHS and independent sector hospitals.
-Patients' homes and in community settings.

Placements take place within our partnership of healthcare providers in Central and North East London who provide you with clinical placements, including Barts Health NHS Trust, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship-centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme with students expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week. All modules are compulsory.

Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM001 Relationship Centred Care and Concepts of Biology for Health (Theory)
-HSM101 Engaging in Practice 1 (Practice)

Part Two is 37 weeks and focuses on acute and long term care. This part includes the following modules:

The Decker School of Nursing graduate nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through June 19, 2019.

In the Master of Science program (MS), students select one of four functional roles to pursue as a clinical nurse specialist, administrator, educator or nurse practitioner. Dual roles are also available for additional credit.

The Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed to prepare Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists to respond more efficiently to changes in health care delivery and emerging health care needs. The DNP focuses on providing leadership for evidence-based practice, and will incorporate the advanced practice content currently included in the master's program.

The programme covers the skills needed for teaching and classroom management and helps students to explore the theory underpinning teaching and learning. The core programme takes place in a placement college. Student teachers complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching experience during the programme. In Phase 1, you will be attached to a placement college of further education or similar institution for three days a week to observe teaching and undertake teaching in your subject area. You will be supported and assessed by a mentor as well as your tutor at the university. You will attend the university for the remaining two days of the week. You will complete between 25 and 50 hours of teaching during this phase.
