This is a unique course for international and UK-based psychiatrists, paediatricians and psychologists, as well as allied professionals leading to enhanced clinical and research skills in child and adolescent mental health. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health course is taught by leading figures in the field and offers comprehensive content with strong research and clinical focus.

Students will be taught research methodology and statistics, issues relating to child development, aetiology of child and adolescent disorders, the psychological and physical treatments for emotional, behavioural and developmental disorders in children and young people. This M.Sc. in Mental Health (Child, Adolescent and Family strand) offers the student two specialist modules in year one, a number of core modules shared with other MSc students, as well as clinical placements. The specialist modules are 'Child and Adolescent and Family Mental Health Interventions' and 'Theoretical and Evidenced Based Practices in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health.

Students on this programme are recognised as practising professionals with a resource of practice and educational skills and knowledge that will enhance their learning at this advanced stage of their personal and professional pathway. Each student is considered unique in life experiences, motivation for learning, learning style and scholastic ability. Admission Requirements

Candidates for this course will be currently working in mental health/mental illness field; and in the case of the Child, adolescent and family strand, be working in child, adolescent and family mental health services and have a minimum of one year's recent experience in the area of mental health/mental illness; and in the case of the child, adolescent and family strand, be currently employed in the area of mental health/mental illness/child, adolescent and family services and have Garda clearance for working with children and adolescents. Candidates will also normally hold an honors degree in a relevant discipline; or otherwise satisfy the selection panel that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.

-If you are a doctor in a training programme for paediatrics currently working as a Specialist Trainee (ST) in the UK, this programme is designed for you: in particular for ST trainees post-MRCPCH who are in ST years 3, 4 or 5. The programme may also be useful for suitably qualified overseas applicants.

Programme structure

The Certificate is a mix of online and face-to-face teaching. Twenty 6-hour days of face-to-face teaching are delivered through the academic year, and these are supplemented by online lectures, formative exercises and compulsory reading. This allows a collegiate atmosphere to develop with less disruption to clinical experience. This certificate course will reward the trainees 60 units of credit on completion.

The Graduate Certificate in Integrative Health is designed for health care professionals desiring graduate study of evidenced-based, integrated approaches to health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment.  An accelerated format is available for many of the courses, so that the Certificate can be earned in three semesters or less.  Students without adequate preparation in disease etiology are strongly advised to take    HEA 500 Diseases. Those desiring advanced study in a particular integrative health area may elect, under advisement, HEA 609 Independent Study; while those desiring a clinical field experience may elect HEA 611 Field Placement, also under advisement.

The MSc programme is structured on a semester basis and can be taken over a period of one to six years. The first semester of the academic year runs from September to January; the second semester from February to June. The dissertation is completed in the summer period (semester C).

All modules are at M Level and are awarded 30 M Level Credits. The taught component of each module lasts for 12 weeks. Each of the modules will entail the same amount of study (300 hours). This is divided between contact time at the University, directed study (pursuing learning objectives specifically associated with the module) and private study which includes reading and preparation of assignments. The allocation of the hours will vary between modules. The dissertation can be taken as a 30 credit (short) dissertation consisting of a piece of work relating to work based practice such as an audit, patient survey or service development or the dissertation can be taken as a 60 credit (long) dissertation involving an in-depth research project.

Tutorial support is available to you from personal development tutors, module leaders and project supervisors and there are additional resources available within the University to assist you with your study skills.

We are pleased to invite podiatry graduates to apply for an MSc scholarship funded through the Scholl Podiatric Research and Education Fund. This scholarship provides funding for the successful candidate to undertake the Master’s degree in Podiatry on a full time basis. Our research involves national and international collaborations, with many projects involving NHS partnerships.

We have specific research strengths in the areas of children and adolescents; developmental psychopathology of mental health; ageing and older adulthood; adult psychological problems; brain injury; chronic health conditions; psychological therapies research, including cognitive behavioural interventions; emotions and emotion regulation; sex offenders; learning disability; neuropsychology; quality of life; severe and enduring mental health problems; and the development and validation of measures.

Specific areas of interest include cognitive behaviour therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, psychosis, health psychology, and qualitative approaches.

Recent successful PhD topics have included eating disorders and emotion; chronic pain; quality of life and intellectual disabilities; developmental factors in adolescent mental health, and intervention for bipolar disorder.

We have an active research group in the area of applied developmental psychology and psychological therapies research for severe mental health issues. About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

The Department's postgraduate taught programmes combine academic excellence with flexible and innovative design and delivery; our postgraduate portfolio is distinguished by the provision of a number of Professional Masters and a Professional Doctorate programme designed to be studied part-time by learners working in a wide range of healthcare roles from all around the world. All our postgraduate courses are taught online and this has proved to be one of our unique selling points, with students able to continue within their practice area or working environment whilst gaining a further qualification.

The Department is renowned for its exemplary attention to educational design, integrating knowledge with research evidence and resulting in programmes which are highly relevant to contemporary practice; in addition, the Department boasts some of the most innovative and successful approaches to online and part-time education, recognised through a number of awards.

There are current links with primary care trusts, strategic health authorities, the two hospitals in Bath and colleagues in industry. The Department works closely with esteemed international academic institutions, and individual health practitioners, in order to meet the regional, national and global challenges facing health and social care.

Main areas of research

The Department carries out research and teaching in health, medicine, exercise and sport, making significant contributions to national and international health agendas.

The Department aims to produce high-quality research with a strongly applied focus. We aim to contribute to promoting the health of the population and to improving the quality and efficiency of the health services that people rely on and pursue this agenda with a variety of partners at local, regional, national and international levels. Our work is organised around the two main themes of population health and healthcare. We are also pleased to offer a range of Research degrees.

- Population health

Historically, health policy has focused almost exclusively on sickness services provided by agencies such as the National Health Service. Although this focus on healthcare remains hugely important, it is increasingly complemented by aspirations to improve the health of the population by tackling the social determinants of health such as poverty and pollution and by encouraging people to adopt health promoting behaviours such as healthy diets and increased physical activity and to stop health damaging ones such as smoking. There is also growing national and international concern that improvements in health should be fairly distributed by reducing health inequalities. The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways. Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to sport, health and exercise science, but the School attaches growing importance to tobacco control and health inequalities.

- Healthcare

The Department’s expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organization, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. Current research activity involves collaborations with NHS colleagues in Bath at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases – RNHRD, the Royal United Hospital, the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Care Trust, the Pan Bath & Swindon Primary Care Research Consortium and RehabNET.

The UCL Division of Psychiatry is pleased to offer this programme focused on clinical practice in mental health and its evidence base. The Clinical Mental Health Sciences MSc integrates biological, psychological and social perspectives on mental health and caters both for psychology graduates and for clinicians wishing to undertake a broad-based, rigorous and flexible higher degree.

Degree information

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of current evidence regarding mental health problems and the interventions provided to address them, as well as enhancing their research skills. A wide range of options from across the School of Life and Medical Sciences at UCL allows students to tailor a programme that fully fits their needs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of 1–2 core double modules (30–60 credits), 4–6 optional modules (60–90 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits). A diploma may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 8 taught single modules, amounting to 120 credits. A certificate may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 4 taught single modules, amounting to 60 credits.

Core modules
-Core Principles of Mental Health Research (double module)
-Clinical Mental Health (double module – compulsory only for those who do not have at least six months’ full-time experience, or the equivalent, of working in mental health settings).

Optional modules - students who take the Clinical Mental Health module will choose at least one option (15 credits) from the following:

Research project/report
All students undertake a final project. This may be a research project, to be reported as a paper of 6,000-8,000 words ready for submission to a specified journal, a blog of 1,000 words and a 20-minute talk, or a clinical project of 10,000 words reporting on a clinical topic or service evaluation.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops, with considerable use of supporting online learning. Assessment methods include one unseen examination, coursework including designing questionnaires and protocols and analysing data, giving talks and presenting posters, and a final report in the format of a journal paper or brief for clinicians or service planners.

Placement
The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

Careers

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. For clinicians, this is a great opportunity to gain a higher qualification through a programme based in a leading university department which can be closely tailored to your interests across clinical, research and management fields.

Employability
Students will be taught by leading experts in their fields, will gain a strong clinical understanding of mental health, and will be able to develop their skills in research, service design and evaluation, and writing and presenting. Previous Division of Psychiatry Master’s graduates have been enthusiastic about their career enhancement, both through their programme and the connections they have made through it. A large proportion of our first cohort of graduates have gone on to paid employment in relevant areas of mental health, especially research assistant, clinical support worker, psychological wellbeing practitioner and assistant psychologist posts. Others have embarked on PhD studies.

Who is it for?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Child Nursing is designed for students who already have a degree and are looking for progression and further challenges which can be fulfilled by undertaking a rewarding and lifelong career within the nursing profession.

Objectives

The Postgraduate Diploma in Child Nursing prepares you for a fulfilling and rewarding career caring for children, and their parents, at different stages of the developmental spectrum who have had injuries, suffered accidents, acquired disease or have a range of healthcare needs.

Children’s nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession. As a child nurse you need to be committed and dedicated with the willingness to give time to others with care and compassion. You will learn the skills of clinical decision-making that is supported by knowledge and experience of providing healthcare to a diverse population.

The course combines theoretical study with clinical experience gained at London’s leading hospitals, trusts and community settings. The School's facilities feature an excellent Clinical Skills Centre, including a simulated wards, where you can prepare for your practice experience. Whilst on clinical placements you will also benefit from exposure to the capital’s diverse population.

Placements

Half of your time as a student will be spent gaining practice experience through laboratory-based simulated practice and through clinical placements in health care settings.

Simulated Practice

Simulated practice is a significant component of your practice learning experience and will provide opportunities for you to rehearse a range of practical nursing skills and enact scenarios in a realistic, but safe simulated environment in our excellent clinical laboratories.

You will be encouraged to explore, experiment and engage in nursing activities with the lecturers. The sessions will help you to understand the rationale and evidence that you will need so you feel safe when providing hands-on care. Through this experience you will develop confidence as you prepare for your practice experience and gain a sense of purpose and belonging to the nursing profession.

Clinical Placements

Clinical placements can take place in a variety of settings such as:
-General Practice (GP) surgeries
-Nurseries
-Special schools
-NHS and independent sector hospitals
-Patients' homes and in community settings.

Placements take place within City's partnership of healthcare providers in Central and North East London who provide you with clinical placements, including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and North Middlesex HNS Trust.

This allows you to become familiar with the needs of local communities and its healthcare providers. Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Academic facilities

Facilities at City include the excellent fully equipped Clinical Skills Centre in addition to an interactive Biological Sciences Laboratory.

Many of the clinical practice placements offer the opportunity for students to experience environments where clinical diagnostic tests are performed and in addition operating theatres where surgical procedures are carried out.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught by academics who:
-Have a background and expertise in children’s nursing and an up-to-date knowledge of clinical practice.
-Have an advanced level of knowledge of the biological and social sciences and public health and the ability to apply this knowledge to the delivery of care.

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme and are expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

Compulsory modules
Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM001 Relationship Centred Care and Concepts of Biology for Health (Theory)
-HSM101 Engaging in Practice 1 (Practice)

Part Two is 37 weeks and focuses on acute and long term care. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM132 Experiencing Acute Care, Diagnostics and Treatment (Theory)
-HSM201 Engaging in Practice 2 (Practice)
-HSM043 Experiencing Long Term Care, Rehabilitation and Recovery (Theory)

Part Three is 27 weeks and focuses on the development of leaders and managers of care. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM051 Leading and Managing in Professional Practice (Theory)
-HSM301 Engaging in Practice 3 (Practice)
Depending on the RPL Practice claim submitted by students there is a further 500 hours of clinical practice to be completed.

Holidays are not included in the above hours and all modules are compulsory.

Career prospects are excellent with Postgraduate Diploma students securing employment as Band 5 Staff Nurses with Trusts including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust.

Nursing is a lifelong career with excellent progression opportunities in clinical management, education, research and clinical specialisms and many and varied career paths ranging from sister/ charge nurse, community nurse to nurse director. Specialisms include the following:
