This programme equips students with a critical understanding of intelligent systems for legal and administrative applications, computer forensics and cybercrime, an appreciation of the aspects of law that are most relevant to the work of IT-professionals, and a grounding in key management techniques.

It is built around taught core modules on intelligent systems for legal and administrative applications, computer forensics and cybercrime, IT law for IT professionals and the principles of management. These modules are complemented by a wide range of optional modules that relate to various aspects of computing and management. The final part of the programme is an individual project that is closely linked to the main themes of the programme, containing a substantial computer science component of either a theoretical or practical nature.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Science in Student Affairs Administration (MSAA) programs both are housed within the College of Community and Public Affairs and are considered professional terminal degrees. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MSAA dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 45-credit hour MS in Student Affairs Administration program can be completed as part of a 66-credit hour program (rather than 87 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MSAA dual degree will prepare students for administrative positions in college and university settings. The MSAA program provides specialized training for students desiring to work in student affairs offices, while the MPA provides the knowledge and skills necessary for management. This requires the study of organizational and student development theory as well as gaining hands-on experience in at least one student services office. The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

MS:

THE COORDINATOR OF THE SEMINAR

The International Seminar on European Project Management is organized and coordinated by Pixel, an education and training institution based in Florence (Italy) having as its main aim the provision of support to internationalization and European Cooperation. Pixel successfully coordinated and managed over 85 European projects. Some of the European programmes that funded the projects in which Pixel was and is involved are: Socrates ODL; Socrates Minerva, Socrates Grundtvig, Socrates Lingua, eLearning, Leonardo da Vinci, Lifelong Learning, Justice Programme, Safer Internet Programme. ORGANIZATION

The European Project Management international Seminar has a duration of 60 hours.
30 hours of classroom based learning held in Florence (Italy). The 30 hours course is organized in 6 days, Monday to Saturday, 5 hours each day.
30 hours of e-learning integrated with virtual meetings with the course tutor and the other course participants. A Forum is also available for virtual meetings among all participants.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have over 15 years of experience in planning and managing projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, mainly in the sector of Education and Training.

A practical simulation is carried out for each topic in focus. The practical simulation is based on the use of the services, databases and documentation made available, on-line, by the European Union.
The objective of the practical activity is the simulation of the development and presentation of a European project.
At the end of the international Seminar, every work group will have produced a first draft of a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership etc.

FOLLOW UP

During the classroom course each participant is introduced to the e-learning course’s contents.

During the four weeks after the classroom course, 2 virtual meetings are organized between the course trainers and tutor and the course participants to further analyse and discuss the contents learnt at distance. The educational activities include lectures, workshops and internships (also abroad) to allow students to acquire wide-ranging skills that are readily transferable into the world of work. The final master's thesis

The programme is completed with a final master's thesis requiring students to work intensively on a topic of their choice with the support of regular meetings with their supervisor. Students will defend their master's thesis, which must be original and backed by exhaustive documentation and scientific investigation, before a committee of professors and experts.

The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs and Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing) housed in the Decker School of Nursing offer a dual MPA-MS Nursing degree program to provide students at Binghamton University with a unique opportunity. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Students must apply and be admitted to both the MPA program and the MS Nursing program. These are separate applications and each requires an application fee to the Graduate School. Students who begin one program and then apply to the other program later will need to meet with the appropriate advisors for both programs to develop a customized program of study; completion within three years may not be possible for students who do not begin the programs in the same semester.

The M.H.A. curriculum provides the educational and professional foundations for leadership in the health services field. It emphasizes analytical thinking and aims to provide graduates who are skilled professionals with in-depth applied administrative research tools. Graduates are expected to be capable of identifying and solving complex organizational and assessment problems in the health services sector.

What makes the program unique?

The M.H.A. has a professional executive focus and is taught in modular (1.5 credit) format: Friday afternoon through to Sunday afternoon, approximately one weekend per month. The full program takes two calendar years to complete while also allowing students to work full-time while completing their degree. Co-delivered by instructors from the Faculty of Medicine and the Sauder School of Business, students complete courses in health systems, policies and management to prepare them for a broad range of issues facing today's health care world. The program follows a cohort-based schedule and all 24 courses are required.

The M.H.A. program is delivered at UBC Robson Square located right in the heart of Vancouver’s business community. Our facilities are dedicated to creating the perfect learning environment and our classrooms are customized for interactive approaches with technical configurations to suit lectures and group discussions. Students in the MHA also receive fully-catered meals throughout their weekend classes, along with all textbooks and course materials, included in the program’s tuition.

In the midst of all the turmoil, we expect governments to be transparent, effective, and efficient problem solvers. The main question that we ask in the Master of Public Administration is therefore:

How can we address humankind’s most pressing problems from the perspective of governance?

The Master of Public Administration focuses on the management, steering, and coordination of political, administrative, economic, and social actors, as well as the formal and informal regimes and policy processes within which they act towards addressing collective social problems at regional, national, and international levels. A defining hallmark of the master is that governance is studied and taught from a multi-level perspective. This means that there is no single level of governance at which societal challenges can be addressed best. For example, the Ebola disease started as a local governance problem of a few countries but transformed itself rapidly into a global problem due to the disease’s spread by means of modern transportation. Boat refugees, to take another example, who flee their homelands because of local famine or civil wars poses a major challenge for the European Union.

Format

These examples show that for educating future public policy professionals, in order to be able to address these problems in an adequate ways, a holistic rather than a single-level approach is needed. Hence, the various tracks within the Master of Public Administration span the intricacies of multi-level governance by a multitude of public and private actors, all the way to the management of organizations and the behaviour of individual public managers.

How You Study

Normally, PhD students register for an MPhil, and after two semesters are expected to transfer to the PhD programme. This transfer requires the production of a detailed research proposal, which the candidate will be expected to defend at a transfer viva. The formal transfer is subject to approval by the University's Research Committees.

All research degree students can decide the focus for their research in negotiation with their supervisors. Individual tutorials are held at mutually agreed times. Supervisions for home students may be undertaken in person, or by e-mail, videoconferencing technology or over the phone. Overseas students studying in the UK on a Tier 4 visa must attend monthly supervisions in person.

Due to the nature of postgraduate research programmes, the vast majority of your time will be spent in independent study and research. You may have additional meetings with your academic supervisors, however the regularity of these may vary depending on your own individual requirements, subject area, staff availability and the stage of your programme.

How You Are Assessed

PhD students are expected to produce a thesis of 80,000 words, while MPhil students produce a thesis of 40,000 words, supported by an oral defence.
