The Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy MSc is for qualified physiotherapists wanting to build on their skills and knowledge, advance their professional practice, and earn a further professional and academic qualification.

This course has been developed with the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT). Course graduates benefit from being able to apply for full membership of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP).

You will develop your advanced evaluative and problem-solving skills for the examination, assessment and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction.

A wide range of optional modules means you can create your own CPE study programme to suit your professional or personal interests and aspirations.

The course is designed to fit around your existing physiotherapy practice hours. Week-long intensive study blocks allow attendance for students based in the UK, EU and internationally.

The Msc/PgDip Occupational Therapy course is designed to enable you to develop the required competencies, skills and standards of proficiency required to be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as an occupational therapist.

The accelerated design of the course allows the full-time professional training to be condensed into two years, rather than the traditional three-year route. This experience acts as good preparation for entering the stimulating and evolving world of health and social care as a qualified member of the workforce.

A key feature of this course is the problem-based learning approach which involves you working in a small group with a shared responsibility for meeting the learning outcomes for each module.

Occupational Therapy at LSBU has a dedicated team of tutors who utilise their wealth of knowledge, skills and clinical experiences of working in health and social care to inform the teaching programme. The team has a strong commitment to engaging with clinicians and service users in the teaching programme.

To support the teaching programme, the School of Health and Social Care has a dedicated suite of clinical skills labs, including two well-equipped Activities of Daily Living (ADL) suites plus large rooms for art, splinting and group skills sessions.

After successful completion of either the PgDip or MSc award (including all placements) you'll be eligible to apply for registration as a qualified occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Modules

Year 1:
- Introduction to occupation
This module develops an understanding of the healthy individual across the age range. You will explore people's roles and relationships and their engagement in occupation/activity. The environments in which individuals participate such as; home, school, and community will be considered. Occupational therapy philosophy will be introduced and the scope of the profession explored. An understanding of relevant underpinning knowledge such as: human development, psychosocial theories, anatomy and physiology will be developed. Professional ethics and behaviour will also be introduced.

- Assessment of occupational performance
In this module the focus is on the assessment phase of the occupational therapy (OT) process. You will be able to appraise the concepts of assessment and evaluate standardised and non-standardised assessments. Occupational/activity analysis is introduced and evidence-based practice skills begin to develop. This module will explore common experiences associated with the ageing process.

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 1
This module focuses on the processes of problem identification, goal setting and intervention planning and introduces intervention strategies. You will continue to develop knowledge of theories and models influencing Occupational Therapy practice. Evidence-based practice begins to emerge more strongly.

Year 2:
- Enabling occupational performance and participation 2
This module will build on knowledge and skills in the intervention planning and intervention stages of the OT process. You will be able to draw on the evidence base when selecting and implementing intervention strategies.;

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 3
This module will build on knowledge and skills in the implementation and evaluation of intervention in the OT process. It will also consolidate knowledge and skills in relation to the whole OT Process. This module also develops understanding of environments and how they can be adapted to enhance occupational performance from the perspective of a child. These will be explored in the context of disability, inclusion, occupational identity and performance.

- Leadership and service innovation in occupational therapy
This module focuses on entrepreneurship, service innovation and development, it consolidates knowledge and skills related to personal management and prepares you to manage the complexities of a dynamic health and social care environment. The development of professional identity will also be explored.

- Research and scholarship in occupational therapy (MSc qualification only)
This is an optional module for the award of a preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy. Students who pass two out of three first year modules on the first attempt and achieve the required marks are given the option to enrol on Research and scholarship in occupational therapy module. This module is the equivalent to three modules and runs concurrent with other second year modules and a placement. Successful completion of this and the six postgraduate modules will result in being awarded preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy.

All modules are assessed by a mix of written assignments, case studies, critical review, presentations, examinations, practice placements and a research proposal (MSc students only).

Employability

As well as the practical skills required to work as an occupational therapist, this course course develops the employability skills needed for a successful career, including verbal and written communication, negotiation and liaison, team work, organisation and self-management, leadership and management, and personal resilience as well as the ability to work with a diverse range of people whilst demonstrating the values and attributes as described in the NHS constitution.

- Occupational therapy as a career
On graduating you are eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This allows you to practice as an occupational therapist within the NHS, community services and local authorities, as well as social enterprises and the private sector. Other settings include prisons, residential and nursing homes, schools and social services.

- Salary
Occupational therapists beginning their career as allied health professionals in the NHS typically as a Band 5 with a starting salary of about £21,692. Salaries in local government are at similar levels.

Career development offers opportunities to move to higher grades in team leadership, clinical expert, service management and consultant therapist roles. Within the NHS, this can mean salaries in the band 7 and 8 range.

- Continuous professional development
For graduates with a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy from London South Bank University awarded within the last three years, we offer a unique opportunity to 'top up' your qualification to an MSc in Occupational Therapy by completing the School of Health and Social Care dissertation module. This is completed whilst working.

Placements

During the course you are required to successfully complete over 1000 practice placement hours within a broad variety of health and social care settings, meeting the registration requirements of the College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

At LSBU, we work closely with a number of healthcare organisations to provide a wide range of suitable clinical placements. You will therefore gain experience of working with:

- Acute and long-standing health needs (including physical, mental health and learning disability)
- Services in a range of settings (hospital and community, urban and rural)
- People of different ages

Structure of placement learning:
Practice placements are in four blocks and are all full-time. You will work under the guidance of an occupational therapist (educator). The placements are developmental and occur at three levels, matching your knowledge and skills development whilst you progress through the course. Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be an occupational therapist.

Placement settings:
Placements will predominantly be within the Greater London area in the NHS, local authority, voluntary, social enterprise, charities and private sectors. Placements can be in existing services as well as emerging services. Applicants should be aware that they may need to cover travel costs and placements could require them to commute across London (up to two hours).

Teaching and learning

The course uses a range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, small group sessions, practical skills sessions, online and self-directed learning activities.

We will develop your knowledge of how different organisations use varying levels of safety procedures and you will assess their impact on the whole company.

By investigating an organisation as a whole, you'll gain a broad knowledge of other departments such as marketing, sales and human resources, and how they are affected by the procedures and processes you implement. You'll also enhance your understanding of the technical and human aspects of health and safety, such as identifying whether issues were caused by machine malfunctions or misjudgement by humans.

It also offers you the chance to look at past and present case studies to understand any errors made, what caused the mistakes and the preventative measures that should be put in place. These could range from dealing with harmful substances within a chemical facility, exposed wires and trip hazards in a busy office, to safety measures for maintenance work on rail tracks.

You may choose to continue your studies and gain an MSc by completing an additional two research modules.

NB: If you have already completed an IOSH-accredited PG Dip, this course offers you the chance to convert your qualification into an MSc by studying two additional research modules* (see Module Listings below). The duration for the course in this instance will be 1 year part-time, with fees charged pro-rata.

Summary

This programme is for students who have a strength in mathematics and wish to teach in primary schools, focusing solely or mainly on mathematics.

This programme has been devised in response to government policy to train specialist primary mathematics teachers to address identified needs in primary mathematics teaching.

The programme focuses on developing you as a confident mathematics teacher, able to teach higher attaining older children as well as teaching to the range of attainment found in primary schools. As a specialist mathematics teacher you will also be someone able to advise and enthuse colleagues so as to raise attainment throughout the school. As Ofsted (2011) showed, this means ensuring effective mathematics teaching from the Foundation Stage and for all children, not just high attainers.

You will be someone who can demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject and potential to inspire children and colleagues. The aim is to raise the profile of mathematics and confidence and achievement of children.

You will need to demonstrate very good subject knowledge as well as having a strong interest in promoting positive attitudes to mathematics learning. In addition you will need to show you have a good understanding of primary education and a commitment to high expectations for all children.

The course provides both an academic qualification at Masters-level (PGCE) and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will gain from the expertise and enthusiasm of our school mentors and university subject tutors in small, subject-based teaching groups at Roehampton, tailored to your experience and expertise.

Content

The Mathematics Specialist pathway has different modules which are geared towards becoming a specialist Mathematics teacher.

You will focus on the core knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to enter the teaching profession and spend time analysing the primary practices experienced in your placements with a consideration of contemporary issues and research. You will also focus on subject knowledge and pedagogy in the National Curriculum core subjects (English, Mathematics and Science) and foundation subjects (Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education). The foundation subjects are introduced via one group seminar for each of the nine subjects. This session will provide an introduction to the subject including pedagogical techniques and provide a signpost to current research and further reading.

The knowledge in this programme will be a combination of mathematics carried out by the specialists themselves and an in depth study of the mathematics to be taught. You will build a strong awareness of how to transform mathematical ideas into knowledge for teaching. Personal subject knowledge will be addressed through materials such as Roehampton’s very successful Mathematics Enhancement Course, adapted for primary specialists.

You will spend time in school where you will have the opportunity to develop and practice skills and strategies which promote children's learning. During the placement you are expected to draw upon all the other modules in the programme and engage in analysis and evaluation within the framework provided by the PGCE Primary Profile of Professional Development. The focus of this placement is to act as an introduction to effective teaching and learning strategies and to provide an opportunity to observe children as learners, developing an understanding of how a range of factors impact on the learning and well-being of individuals.

Upon application to the programme, trainees choose an age specialism (3-7 years or 5-11 years). This determines the mix of placement schools offered for both SEs.

Programme Contents

Urbanisation is a global phenomenon that is shaping the future of our societies. Most of the key challenges of contemporary societies are encountered and addressed in cities. Cities provide enormous economic, technical and cultural opportunities, but they are also places of social conflict and segregation as well as environmental and health problems. The magnitude of these challenges implies that no single profession or field of research can tackle them. Urban development requires an integrated approach. To this end, two prominent Finnish universities have joined forces in this unique and interdisciplinary Master’s programme.

The Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning prepares you to excel as a professional capable of understanding and addressing complex urban development challenges. You will learn to address such challenges through a curriculum and pedagogical approach that includes interdisciplinary breadth as well as depth in core areas of knowledge, skills and practice. The programme balances theoretical, historical and conceptual knowledge with the acquisition of methods, skills and experience. You will thus gain a broad understanding of urban phenomena as well as practical experience in collaborative and practical situations. This is the foundation of the programme and of the elements in the curriculum.

Taking full advantage of the joint university structure, the programme unites leading expertise from the University of Helsinki and Aalto University into three major study lines. The signature elements in the programme are interdisciplinary studies that address urban challenge themes. These themes relate to urgent contemporary issues found not only in Finland but on the European and global scale, including controversies intrinsic to urbanisation. The urban challenge themes may be attached to focus areas, research projects or collaborations within our universities, municipalities and regions in order to provide a constructive and critical framework for study and practice. These themes cross the boundaries of disciplines and professions, and are united in addressing a common challenge and emphasising a forward-looking perspective.

Selection of the Major

There are three study lines in the Master’s programme in Urban Studies & Planning:

Urban Planning and Design
Urban Planning and Design (USP Plans) addresses urban development by integrating the knowledge, skills and pedagogical approaches of planning and design and by developing synergies across multiple disciplines. The constructive power of design to imagine, structure, visualise and communicate is combined with the analytical rigour and critical understanding of planning and urban governance history, methodologies and tools. USP Plans develops and deepens such skills while advancing your professional capabilities through challenge-based learning within concrete cases, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and learning-by-doing experimentation. USP Plans is oriented towards planners, architects, landscape architects, and spatial, service and strategic designers.

Urban Life, Economy and Cultures
Urban Life, Economy and Cultures (USP Peoples) addresses urban development by integrating analysis of socio-economic, digital and physical structures with planning. Here you will explore and apply theories and methodologies from the social and political sciences. The focus is on socio-spatial dynamics changes, including influences of policies and markets, actors and structures, decision-making processes, social mixing and demographics. USP Peoples deepens your knowledge of foundational studies while advancing your professional capabilities through challenge-based and collaborative learning, including situated municipal and field studies. USP Peoples is oriented towards planners, urban economists and managers and those interested in urban humanities.

Urban Ecologies and Systems
Urban Ecologies and Systems (USP Systems) addresses urban development by integrating technical and natural science knowledge. This includes methodologies for studying, assessing and planning for social and ecological resilience, technological innovation and complex adaptive systems. It applies systems approaches to identify multi-dimensional planning while retaining a holistic perspective on the complex and historical dynamics affecting multiple scales. USP Systems develops your understanding of foundational studies while advancing your professional capabilities through challenge-based and collaborative learning, including urban, digital and ecological field studies. USP Systems is oriented towards planners, engineers, architects, landscape architects, and environmental managers.

Programme Structure

The requirement for completing the Master’s programme in Urban Studies and Planning is 120 credits (ECTS), which can be done in two years. The curriculum consists of:

Core Urban Challenge Studios (20 credits)
Common urban challenge studios integrate multiple expert areas to study and address contemporary urban phenomena from different perspectives. Here you will explore urban challenge themes theoretically from different perspectives and you will address them practically within specific cases, sites or initiatives. Your teachers represent key disciplines and professions, and your studies will be conducted in cooperation with partners in research and municipalities. Examples of urban challenge themes include:
-Urban economies and the challenge of governance and welfare.
-Social integration and the challenge of urban typologies and heritage.
-Liveability and the global challenge of fast-paced cities.
-Socio-Ecological habitats and the challenge of densification.

Specialisation coursework (20 credits)
The three study lines offer courses for you to specialise within one of the three competence areas in the broad field of urban studies and planning. Both universities offer courses for each study line; these can be adapted to support your advancement, background knowledge and skills. The courses cover topics such as urban geography, urban sociology, urban ecology, urban economics, urban ethnology and history, environmental policy, urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture, real estate economics, service and strategic design, etc.

Core skills and methods coursework (20 credits)
Core skills for thesis research and professional practice are offered as basic courses. These include skills relevant to digital representation, analysis and communication, modalities and techniques of communication and argumentation, research methods and methodologies of academic research. You will learn, for example, how to use digital tools to analyse and study urban phenomena and how to illustrate your ideas and solutions visually and graphically. You will also become familiar with the theories and tools of communication and argumentation, and you will study and apply research methods.

Electives (30 credits)
You can select elective courses according to your personal study plan. You can select electives to deepen your knowledge in a specialisation or broaden your exposure to additional areas relevant to planning. For architects and landscape architects, some electives will guide your development according to the EU directive for these professions. You can also take courses at other Finnish universities, in a student exchange abroad, or in an internship in city planning and development.

Master’s Thesis (30 credits)

Career Prospects

The programme prepares you to be a professional in a field that is meaningful, growing and in demand. You will acquire the knowledge, skills and experience needed to fill both traditional and emerging planning roles (such as urban planning and design, real estate development, strategic planning, environmental planning, landscape architecture, policy and service design). To these established or emerging roles, you will bring an integrated understanding of, and training in applying, more interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to urban development. As a graduate you will be prepared to compete for local and international positions within public, private and non-profit organisations, planning, architectural and policy advisory firms, research institutes and NGOs.

Internationalization

The Master’s Programme in Urban Studies & Planning provides international scope in many ways, taking advantage of the unique Helsinki context and diverse urban contexts around the world. Each year, new students in the Master’s Programme in Urban Studies & Planning include both Finnish and international applicants. We look for students whose varied backgrounds, experiences, and education reflect the richness of contemporary society. The teachers of the programme have an international background and experience, and the programme builds on their strong international connections in their respective fields. Researchers and invited lecturers from abroad take part in the teaching of the programme. The Master’s Programme builds on the joint University of Helsinki and Aalto University Bachelor’s Program ‘Urban Academy’, including its teaching faculty, international network and advisory board of leading international experts. Your elective coursework can include a student exchange or internship abroad, and you are also encouraged to collaborate internationally on your Master’s thesis. You will thus have an opportunity to study in an international environment and acquaint yourself with different cultures. Biomedical engineering is a new and rapidly emerging field of engineering that relies on a multidisciplinary approach to research and development by applying the principles of science and engineering to biological and clinical problems. Problems in this area differ significantly from the more traditional branches of engineering. Nevertheless, the biomedical engineer relies on methodologies and techniques developed in more traditional engineering fields, which are further advanced and adapted to the particular complexities associated with biological systems. These applications vary from the design, development and operation of complex medical devices used in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, to the characterisation of tissue behaviour in health and disease, to the development of software products and theoretical models that enhance the understanding of complex biomedical issues.

This programme aims to prepare specialists with advanced skills sought by the biomedical industries and establishments, including experimental and numerical techniques, computational modelling and in-depth understanding of engineering approaches to biological problems. The acquired knowledge and skills would enable you to participate in the advancement of knowledge and technology in this field. Case studies originating in practical medical and industrial problems are provided throughout the programme involving a range of clinical disciplines including orthopaedics, cardiovascular medicine, urology, radiology and rehabilitation.

The MSc in Biomedical Engineering is organised by a team of medical engineers within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, which has an internationally leading reputation in research, working closely with collaborators in Europe, US and Asia, on exciting research and development projects in this field. World-renowned specialists from the nationally leading Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry provide vital contributions to the programme.
