This distance learning programme enables qualified teachers and others working in education related fields to work more effectively with learners who are deafblind (multi-sensory impaired). It is the only nationally recruiting programme leading to the GTC recognised Mandatory Qualification in Deafblindness/Multi-sensory Impairment. While many students are practising teachers working with children, others are from further education, social services, paramedical or medical specialisms, or residential work. An alternative non mandatory (Non MQ) programme is also open to teachers (as well as other professionals with appropriate qualifications) working with children and young people who are deafblind who are not seeking the MQ.

The programme aims to provide an understanding of the effects and implications of dual sensory impairment on development, learning, and communication, through theoretical and practical work. It will include skills in assessment, monitoring and recording, a knowledge of teaching approaches and of support systems.

CURRICULUM

This course will facilitate students making three commercials combining practical production experience and specialist training.

Specifically students will learn about:

Each term, a key project will be to direct a commercial. By the end of the course you will have made three commercials.

The course has been developed to meet industry demand and NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any other film school. And, unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the NFTS and productions are given cash production budgets.

The diploma course is 12 months part-time, one evening a week (with additional production activity as required) and is delivered in central London. Each week Creative Directors, Successful Commercials Directors, Agency staff, Brand Managers etc will speak to students to elucidate a different aspect of the commercials sector.

Participant production activity will be supported by NFTS students studying on craft courses including Cinematography and Production Sound.

From idea conception to delivery, you’ll learn how to work to a client's brief and present your ideas effectively. How the course is taught

You'll be taught in small groups, through individual and team tutorials, seminars and workshops, supported by lectures from key figures in advertising and related media. The course replicates the experience of working in a typical full-service agency and your project work will be delivered within that context. As well as working individually, you'll work in copywriter/art director pairs and groups to strengthen your communication and negotiation skills. Our Virtual Learning Environment provides information to assist you with research and project work.

Course outline

This is a one-year, full-time course delivered over 45 weeks and divided into three 15-week study blocks:

- Study Blocks 1 & 2

Study Block 1 focuses on strategic thinking as the first step in fulfilling clients' briefs. If your specialism is art direction, you'll learn vital layout and typography skills, as well as developing your appreciation of photography, film, illustration and fine art, and their application to advertising. For copywriters, a range of practical projects will further your writing skills, helping you write in a clear, lively and visual style to stimulate your audience.

During London Study Week, we visit a number of major advertising agencies (see Building professional experience).

- Study Block 3

In Study Block 3, you'll produce a portfolio that will help your transition into this competitive industry. Working with a partner – copywriter or art director – your portfolio can include live projects negotiated with agencies and clients, supported and advised by the course team.

The course's practical elements are substantiated by theoretical studies in Visual Culture & Communication, where you'll research and analyse advertising within changing cultural contexts. The Applied Technology unit gives you hands-on IT training, including using software packages like InDesign, Photoshop, imaging, file conversion, typography and web development.

The Master of Business Administration (Otago MBA) degree is an intensive two phase programme. Phase One comprises ten months of on-campus study of core papers. This is followed by a highly flexible Phase Two of on-campus electives, international exchange or a business project. Phase Two can range from six to twelve months.

The programme takes on a strong global perspective. Together with the diversity of our classes and opportunities for international exchange to renowned universities worldwide, we prepare students for success in the highly competitive global economy. Our comprehensive MBA programme also goes well beyond the academic syllabus to include career development guidance, practical experience and networking activities.

Lecturers on the Otago MBA programme are drawn from three areas - the University, other reputable global business schools, and consultants or business practitioners. They are carefully selected for both academic excellence and strong practical experience in running successful businesses. The small class size ensures a large degree of personal mentoring and guidance from staff.

The style of learning is highly interactive, and participants learn as much from one another as from the course leader or facilitator. Students are assigned to teams, which reflect the diversity of professional and educational backgrounds, demographics and work style preferences. These teams work together on projects, presentations, and assignments to apply business knowledge learned in academic class in real live settings, as well as hone skills such as time management, conflict resolution and problem solving.

Structure of the Programme

Papers to be taken through international exchange must be approved by the Director of Executive Programmes in Business. A candidate must normally pass all papers from Phase 1 before proceeding to Phase 2.

Note: A Candidate who enters the programme from the Diploma in Business Administration programme may be permitted to take one or more papers from Phase 2 before completing all papers in Phase 1.

This new Masters course will educate and train you in the fundamental principles, methods and techniques required for developing such systems. The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is the first stage of a solicitor's professional training. It is an intensive, practical course designed to equip you with the law, procedure and legal skills you will need to work as a solicitor or trainee solicitor. We are validated and monitored by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and receive excellent feedback from our students, so you can feel confident in the quality and standards of our course.

You will receive the training and support you need in order to become an effective trainee solicitor. In addition you will be able to access work experience opportunities as well as guidance and expertise from previous graduates who are now working as trainees or qualified solicitors.

Course detail

To complete the LPC, you must pass stages one and two within five years. Most students do both stages together (the Postgraduate Diploma) but you can do stage one (the Postgraduate Certificate) then do stage two later (provided this is within five years). This means you spread the cost of the course over several years rather than paying the fees in one year.

If you have successfully completed stage one elsewhere, you can study stage two at the University of West London, and on successful completion of stage 2 and accreditation of your stage 1 by the University, you can be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.

In addition you will have the opportunity to become involved with the Law School’s Community Advice Programme – a free legal advice clinic run fortnightly in conjunction with Ealing Equality Council. Other legal work experience opportunities are advertised by employers directly with our Careers and Employment Service and these are posted electronically for you on our LPC Community site.

Career and study progression

LPC stage one graduates will need to complete stage two successfully by studying three vocational elective subjects. You can study these at the University of West London. On successful completion of the LPC, you will need to secure a training contract to complete your training to be a solicitor.

We encourage you to take advantage of the continuing support provided by the Careers and Employment Service after you leave, and to make the most of the networking opportunities provided through the LPC Mentoring and Work Experience Scheme and contacts with the Middlesex Law Society.

As an LPC graduate, you can top up your LPC to a Master's in Legal Practice, undertaking part-time study in research methodologies and doing a dissertation on a topic related to legal practice.

This MA offers students the opportunity to specialise in an exciting and multi-faceted field of study that covers the history and culture of the Mediterranean world during the long millennium from the foundation of Constantinople (modern Istanbul) in 324 to the fall of the Byzantine empire in 1453.

About this degree

Students gain a thorough grounding in key aspects of and approaches to late antique and Byzantine studies. They acquire necessary research skills (ancient languages, palaeography, epigraphy, papyrology) and develop their critical and conceptual understanding of the field through a variety of disciplines (history, literature, material culture, philosophy).

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of one core language or research skills module (40 credits), optional modules (80 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

This course meets the stage one Health Psychology training requirements developed by the Division of Health Psychology of the British Psychological Society. Our graduates are successful in working/studying in industry, academia, charitable organisations and the NHS.

The course provides a complete grounding in the theory, themes, professional issues and practical skills central to stage one Health Psychology training. The course has established links with health organisations where students gain work experience and carry out research.

Students can carry out health psychology research with the School of Pharmacy at University College London (UCL): research is jointly supervised by Chartered Health Psychologists at UWL and UCL. UCL School of Pharmacy is one of the most highly rated pharmacy schools in the UK.

You will be encouraged to present your work at health psychology conferences.
