- HES 512 - Introduction to Environmental Health & Safety Management

This course presents an overview of environmental health and safety (EH&S) management with its emphasis on preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The importance of considering relevant science and engineering in all EH&S management decisions is emphasized. Governmental regulations and insurance matters affecting EH&S performance also are identified and discussed. Qualifications for employment in the field of EH&S management are described and current career opportunities are explored.

- HES 513- Occupational Health & Safety Law

This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of issues that can impact upon private sector employers under the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, including rule making, the duty to comply with standards, General Duty Clause, requirements at multi-employer worksites, record-keeping, employer and employee rights, refusal to work and whistle blower protection, hazard communication, voluntary safety and health audits, inspections and investigations, citations, criminal enforcement, and judicial review. This course will also provide students with an introduction to peripheral “toxic tort” law concepts that should be understood by Safety and Health Managers including theories of liability, CERCLA liability, employer liability, tort defenses, causation, injuries, damages, and mass tort actions.

- HES 514- Health & Safety Regulations & Regulatory Compliance

This course addresses regulatory compliance as an important objective of all EH & S managers and the companies they represent. Focus is directed to workplace regulations of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The purpose, history, structure, jurisdiction, and operations of the agency are presented. Major health and safety standards that have been promulgated by OSHA are considered in some detail. Students learn how their organization can prepare for and respond to OSHA inspections effectively.

- HES 516- Practical Statistics for Safety Professionals

This course provides students with an introduction to basic research methods and statistical analysis for safety managers. Students will be introduced to foundational concepts of problem statement development, variables, hypothesis testing, and research design. Additionally, relevant descriptive and inferential statistic used in the field of Occupational Health and Safety will be covered with an emphasis on the interpretation of results. Students will learn a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The inferential techniques include an emphasis on statistical inference that is commonly used in safety management (e.g., t-tests and correlation). The course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the basic research methods and statistical concepts required by safety managers to identify and mitigate risks using quantitative measures.

- HES 518 - Environmental Law

This course will provide students with a framework understanding of key federal environmental statutes and regulatory requirements that are likely to impact upon the day-to-day operation of a business or industrial facility that a company's Safety and Health Manager should be familiar with, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), Underground Storage Tank (UST) program, Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Oil Pollution Act (OPA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

- CSM 537- Developing the Leader Within

This course takes an in-depth look at leadership theories, principles, qualities, styles, and models with a focus on developing leadership skills and potential within the individual students. Designed to assist students in identifying leadership styles, traits, strengths, and opportunities for improvement, this course will use self-assessment exercises, journaling, individual case studies, group case studies, active and collaborative learning exercises, and a field experience to explore the topic of leadership in depth. Our PGCert in Approved Mental Health Professional Practice is the only certificate that allows students to gain Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) status and be approved by local authorities.

The course combines academic study with practice in mental health, with a focus on AMHP training.

AMHP training covers the integration of mental health issues, psychiatry and mental health law in multidisciplinary teams from a social perspective.

Our lecturers reflect this multidisciplinary approach and include psychiatrists, lawyers, psychologists, nurses and social workers, as well as service users and carers.

Students undertaking AMHP training must be supported by their employers and seconded to the training. Employers must agree to provide a Practice Educator and an appropriate Practice Learning Placement.

To meet the requirements for AMHP, you must successfully complete the five mandatory course units and a competent Practice Portfolio.

Students who successfully complete the PGCert will be able to progress to our PGDip in Applied Mental Health, which includes a literature review. You can then progress to our MSc in Applied Mental Health.

Aims

Our PGCert has been designed for those wishing to seek authorisation under the Mental Health Act 1983, as amended in 2007, to discharge the duties of an Approved Mental Health Professional.

The outcome is to produce knowledgeable and skilled professionals who will be able to discharge statutory responsibilities under this legislation, and who will also have the ability to stay abreast of cutting-edge research and development within contemporary mental health services, as well as having the capacity to translate research insights into practice.

The course aims to produce students who:

  • have a systematic and integrated knowledge and understanding of mental disorders, the different models of causation, presentation, assessment and management, the different models of treatment and intervention and their outcomes;
  • have sufficient knowledge and practical skills to critically apply theoretical models to practice situations, both at the level of individual case planning and case management and also at the level of policy and service development;
  • can work comfortably within multidisciplinary mental health settings;
  • can access and negotiate service frameworks involving a variety of statutory and non-statutory agencies;
  • can successfully achieve consensus in representing their own professional view as one among several, perhaps competing, views or approaches to mental health problems;

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the programme. Students are required to complete assessed essays, an 'open book' mental health law examination and practice-focused assessments.

Course unit details

This course comprises five compulsory units and a Practice Portfolio (zero credit rated unit). The units are:

  • Mental Health Issues
  • The Role of the AMHP
  • Applied Psychiatry
  • Applied Law and Risk
  • Applied Law and Capacity

Each of the 5 units are worth 15 postgraduate credits and the Practice Portfolio is a zero credit rated unit.

The pass mark for each unit is 50%. The Practice Portfolio is assessed as either competent or not yet competent.

On successful completion of all five units plus being deemed 'competent' in the Practice Portfolio, you will be eligible to be approved as an AMHP by your local authority.

Year 1

24-month route

Compulsory units:

The only course of its kind in Wales, the Approved Mental Health Professional programme of study is for those intending to become Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs). The Approved Mental Health Professional PGCert has been introduced to meet the new roles and responsibilities for professionals working with individuals who are considered for, and who become subject to compulsory hospital admission and/or treatment and aftercare introduced in the Mental Health Act 2007. One of these changes included the introduction of Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) who will take on the functions that hitherto have been those of the Approved Social Worker (Mental Health Act 1983).

The Approved Mental Health Professional PGCert is validated by the Care Council for Wales and is designed to meet the key competencies required by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Key Skills considered by the Care Council for Wales to be appropriate for the role.

Modules

Modules on the Approved Mental Health Professional PGCert typically include:

• Values Based Practice and Ethical Decision Making in Mental Health Services
• Policy and Law in Mental Health Services
• Understanding Mental Health and Mental Distress

Course Structure

There are four core modules for the Approved Mental Health Professional programme taught between October and April, following two induction days in September. Students study over one academic year with an arranged placement to gain practical experience.

Assessment: students of the Approved Mental Health Professional programme are assessed throughout their coursework (written assignments and a practice portfolio). The programme has a 50% pass mark for all modules.

Placements: all students the Approved Mental Health Professional programme are sponsored by their employers who have responsibility for arranging placements.

Staff Expertise

Co-Director, Dr Susan Carnes Chichlowska, is a chartered psychologist. She was awarded her PhD from Aberystwyth University (2011). Sue has been a mental health practitioner for many years and also takes a keen interest in mental health research with a special interest in older people’s health care.

Co-Director Margaret Lougher has a wealth of experience in mental health service practice and management in both the public and private sectors. She is still a practising Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) (and previously an ASW) and has proven experience in teaching and supporting students at Master’s level study. Her current specialist areas of interest are links between Mental Health Act 1983 (2007) with other relevant legislation, national and local policy and guidance, in particular the Children Acts 1989 and 2004, the Human Rights Act and Mental Capacity Act. The service user experience and developing updated methods to integrate those key messages into service delivery are central to her perspective.

Social workers, registered mental health nurses, occupational therapists and clinical psychologists who must demonstrate that they have the support of an employer who will ensure they are provided with the necessary context within which to develop Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) skills and meet the requirements of programme’s approach to assessment; written assignments and a practice portfolio, observation of Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) practice and opportunity to carry out supported Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) assessments. Programme description

This programme is the postgraduate qualification for qualified social workers wishing to practise as mental health officers (MHOs). It has been designed by, and is delivered in partnership with, 12 local authorities in the East of Scotland.

This programme focuses upon the role of the MHO in relation to relevant Scottish legislation. In addition to the taught elements, students undertake two periods of assessed MHO practice.

Under Section 32(2) of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 local authorities have a statutory duty to appoint and provide training for MHOs to undertake mandatory MHO responsibilities, enshrined in legislation: mainly the 2003 Act, but also the Adults with Incapacity Act 2000 and the Criminal Proceedings Act 1995.

This programme’s primary aim is to provide the required MHO qualification in partnership with the East of Scotland MHO Award Partnership.

Programme structure

The programme comprises 12 taught days and eight days of online learning over two semesters.

You will also undertake two periods of assessed MHO practice (thirty two days each), which are organised and supported by your employing local authority.

Learning outcomes

The programme aims to provide:

  • the knowledge, skills and competence required to undertake the role of the MHO
  • the opportunity for the development of academic study and specialist learning within mental health social work

You will focus on developing a knowledge base in children’s nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1 you will undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (masters degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less that three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and/or experience. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of children’s nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in relation to children’s nursing. The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice: Workplace Learning Development supports the development of a high status, world leading teaching profession.

The certificate offers individuals, individual schools or groups of schools the opportunity to investigate, by means of practitioner research, a bespoke school-based focus.

It is the aim of the certificate to facilitate both advanced subject knowledge and an understanding of how to best utilise evidence-based practice in order to unlock the potential of all learners.

Typically the delivery includes up to ten face-to-face sessions over the period of one academic year.

Normally this can be completed in one academic year on a part time basis.

The tutors working on the programme have been selected for their expertise in the chosen subject area: action learning expertise and research. Where possible the sessions will be taught by one academic (member of University staff) and a practitioner.

Assessment

The core element will be assessed by two tasks and the project by one report on an area as negotiated with the tutor.

Support school-based projects

The certificate programme offers individuals, individual schools or groups of schools the opportunity to investigate, by means of practitioner research, a bespoke school-based focus.

It aims to encourage reflection on previous learning; support to identify, explore and research a professional challenge, concern or issue; develop a research approach to activity in the workplace; and develop professional skills and attributes through action learning.

Typically the delivery includes up to ten face-to-face sessions over the period of one academic year; the content is designed in partnership by colleagues from the workplace and the University.

Successful students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice worth 60 level 7 Masters credits, which can act as a springboard for further Masters study.

Groups would need to have a minimum of 10 students.

Case study - School-based project

Highbury Primary School developed in conjunction with the University a work-based learning programme entitled ‘Moving to Outstanding Teaching’. This involved teachers being involved in action based research projects, which had been identified from school improvement targets.

The University of Chichester was invited to work with the school to design the content of a postgraduate certificate in professional practice that would enable successful participants to acquire 60–masters level credits.

Drawing on the expertise of colleagues from school and university, a joint programme was developed to meet school needs and was delivered over one academic year.

As a result teachers undertook action research, which investigated aspects of practice that ultimately enhanced pupil learning outcomes within the school.

Action research projects included:

  1. How does peer coaching affect pupil progress and attitudes to learning for higher attaining children?
  2. How does reading interventions impact on pupil progress and attitudes to learning?
  3. How can the effective balance of talk and questioning develop pupil’s communication and language skills in Maths in the early years?
  4. To explore within the context of my school which interventions are the most effective for accelerating the progress of pupil premium children in Maths.
  5. To explore whether creating and composing lyrics to represent the ‘Talk for Writing’ stories would increase the level at which pupils remember the stories in a year 3/4 classroom.

Blended teaching and learning is used wherever possible in recognition that students on this programme are working professionals and students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

As a student on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice you will be allocated a named Personal Tutor who will endeavour to support you throughout the programme.

Students are expected to nominate a named Clinical Supervisor who will act as a critical friend, teacher, mentor and assessor throughout the programme. This is designed to provide you with a framework of stability and support in order to fully contextualise your learning and role within your professional service area.

This individual may, if appropriate, act as the Designated Medical Practitioner should you undertake the Non-Medical Prescribing certificate as part of your overall Award. The University will provide the opportunity for your nominated Clinical Supervisor and/or Designated Medical Practitioner to undertake training, guidance and ongoing support to help fulfil their role.

Due to the nature of this programme weekly contact hours may vary. Postgraduate level study involves a significant proportion of independent study, exploring the material covered in lectures and seminars. In line with the learning and teaching strategy for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice, the assessment and feedback strategy is also based upon the pedagogical philosophy of Student as Producer. The work assessed throughout this Award will be topical, current and will endeavour to be relevant to the student’s professional working practices. Assessments have been designed to be robust, innovative and fit for purpose; therefore allowing you the opportunity to demonstrate that you are consistently competent and capable of the role, both academically and in real-life, complex and dynamic service environments.

Assessments will be undertaken by a range of appropriately experienced and competent assessors, including academic staff, medical practitioners and experienced healthcare professionals, and it is through this collaborative and inter-professional assessment process that the University seeks to gain full assurance that the student is fit for practice as an Advanced Practitioner in their clinical service area.

Assessment methods are likely to include, but are not limited to, written assignments, exams, presentations and projects to test theoretical knowledge, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), case based assessments, direct observation of clinical skills and the development of a clinical competence portfolio. Formative assessments will be conducted whenever possible, aiming to prepare you for the assessment process and to provide developmental feedback to support the learning process. Formative assessment activities are integrated into the programme and focus crucially on developing the autonomy and research capacities of students in line with the Student as Producer ethos. How we teach

We teach management from a truly global perspective, and our courses are based on pioneering research into the challenges faced by businesses everywhere.

We’ll teach you how to identify opportunities, solve problems and inspire others. Many of our teaching staff are world-class researchers working in policy-relevant areas. Our courses are based on their research.

We bring in guest speakers from business, local government and industry. You can apply to carry out a project with an external organisation as part of your course. We also offer you the chance to spend the summer at another university overseas.
