After an introduction to the general business environment, the program covers the fundamentals of marketing and the methodology of marketing planning.

Specific areas such as digital marketing, customer intelligence and business to business marketing are also covered. Course content places emphasis on current trends in marketing, as well as key issues that marketing professionals face.

COURSE CONTENT

The first year of the Master is a fulltime year in Grenoble or London.
The program covers four key areas of study for Marketers, each of the 19 modules follow a logical connection to the one before.

- Strategic Management (6 modules)
- Marketing Management (8 modules)
- Digital Marketing (2 modules)
- Business Fundamentals (3 modules)

The content of the program may be adapted from year to year to take into account the needs of industry. Class attendance is compulsory.

Integrative Marketing Case Study

Using an existing business, the “Live Business Case” will provide the students with the opportunity to pull together all the aspects of the program. Students will analyze a marketing problem in the Company and use their skills and knowledge to solve issues and propose solutions. This takes place in small groups and in a limited time. Assessment for the case study will be based on a group assignment with a group presentation to the Company.

At the end of the one-year full time part of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length, under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study. This will be business oriented and coherent with your program's objectives. A student may choose to write his/her project on a topic grounded in his/her internship experience.

MSc Management and Information Systems: Change and Development aims to train 'hybrid managers' capable of understanding both the job of management in its organisational setting, and the role, management and jargon of information, information systems and information technology.

The course intends to help close the gap of knowledge, skills, culture and language that exists between functional managers and information systems professionals - a gap that results in the majority of information systems, including e-government, e-commerce, and e-development systems, under-performing or becoming failures.

You'll therefore graduate in a strong position to lead the successful development and implementation of new information systems in a wide range of organisations. By the course's end, you will have been provided with:

  • conceptual frameworks to understand the role of management of information, of information technology and of information systems in organisations
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective planning, development implementation and management of information systems

Special features

An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. In addition, participants may undertake research visits to organisations applying information systems in practice in the UK. Field courses may be scheduled at any point during the twelve-month period of the degree programme and this may include during University vacations. Successful applicants are expected to be available to attend.

Countries to be visited may change their immigration and visa regulations at short notice. The Global Development Institute (GDI) cannot guarantee that where visas are required for the field course, they will be granted. GDI will ensure that, in the unlikely event this occurs, affected students are not academically disadvantaged.

Teaching and learning

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 24 months.  There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

You also undertake a research project or economics literature survey on a subject that is of interest to you. This must cover a current topic that is within the remit of Business Economics or International Business Economics.

Assessment

You are assessed by coursework and examination. Your overall degree result is based on your performance in the taught modules and the dissertation.

The core content is covered in the first term, making this a programme with a lot of choice. There is an economics and econometrics focus, but you also can study topics including the economics of micro-finance, e-commerce, asset pricing and the history of economic thought.

If you choose to study MSc International Business Economics you will need to study the International Business Economics elective in the second term, and your research project has to cover more than one country. You will study a total of five units which incorporate a range of topics covering economic theories and principles and how they can explain the existence, nature and operation of retail, wholesale and international banking. We will also guide you in applying sophisticated forecasting techniques to help you understand and anticipate business trends, and with our guidance you will learn how to design and deliver research to the highest standards. The course then concludes with your dissertation where you’ll engage in economic research on a topic of your choice.

Contracts, Markets and Regulation:

You will learn about contemporary economic theories which assist with identifying issues, problems and solutions, and how these are applied to decision-making. Topics include the objectives of the firm, creating and sustaining competitive advantage, consumer behaviour and strategic choices, advertising and innovation, principal-agent theory, property rights and the boundaries of the firm, regulation, social welfare and public policy.

Financial Econometrics:

You will gain a strong practical understanding of the econometric tools you will be using throughout your study of finance. The teaching philosophy is to take an applied approach, in order to provide you with a strong, intuitive understanding of the most important statistical techniques and how to apply them successfully to a wide variety of practical situations in finance. To do this, you will use the main statistical packages, such as Eviews and SPSS.

Finance and Financial Markets:

In the first part of this unit you will study corporate finance and financial decision-making. You will learn about the ideas and techniques used by corporations to make decisions on investment, financing, dividend policy and capital structure. In the second part you will study finance from the financial markets’ perspective, covering stock and bond pricing models, portfolio investment and risk management using derivatives, such as futures, forwards, options and swaps.

International Banking:

In this unit you will study commercial and investment banking at national, international and global levels. Topics covered include money and the banking system, banking structures and regulations, risk management in banking, scale and scope economies and the measurement of competition in banking, determinants of bank crashes and failures, global banking and regulation, global financial markets and instruments and derivatives-related financial crises.

Through the application of professional forensic accounting tools, models, techniques and knowledge, you will gain a comprehensive range of skills covering the three core areas of forensic accounting – litigation support, expert witnessing and fraud examination. You’ll learn to apply your specialised accounting skills in a range of areas including business valuation, assessment of economic damages, proceeds of crime, fraud and money laundering.

This programme is taught full-time over one year, part-time over three years, and is also available through a Distance Learning option.

We are a member of the Anti-Fraud Education Partnership with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, which enables us to have access to up-to-date teaching resources.

Module Details

You will study a total of five units which consider a range of exciting topics such as corporate integrity and management control, fraud and forensic analysis, cybercrime and interviewing and testimony. You will learn how to investigate a case, gather evidence, prepare expert reports and provide evidence. The course then concludes with your dissertation where you’ll have the flexibility to specialise in an area of your choice such as fraud examination, litigation consulting or expert witnessing to name a few.

Here are the units you will study:

Financial Analysis and Modelling: You will gain a critical awareness of the financial environment from both an accounting and finance perspective. You will learn to understand, analyse and interpret company reports, examine the role of the regulatory framework for corporate reporting and the stock market, and explore the pricing of securities. You will also cover the key areas of decision and risk analysis, alongside the process of decision making, key statistical concepts, and selecting and using appropriate analytical software tools as aids to decision making.

Expert Witnessing and Dispute Resolution: This unit enables you to examine the full range of formal and informal methods for dispute resolution within common law, and civil and criminal legal systems, whilst also developing an understanding of the legal and practical protocols alongside the procedural knowledge and etiquette governing the appointment and testimony of expert witnesses. You will also develop a clear understanding of the legal basis and critical elements required to construct an expert report for submission in civil and criminal proceedings.

Financial Forensics and Investigation: On this unit you will develop an understanding of the need for an holistic approach in the investigatory models applied so that you can develop a critical, questioning and evaluative approach in assessing financial data. You will consider the primary evidential elements with a particular emphasis on gathering information from interviews and examining key issues and innovative approaches.

Financial Crime and the Law: You will focus on an appreciation and understanding of the wide variety of financial crime and how the current regulatory framework and crime control statutes have developed to deal with them. Through examining features of corporate integrity and management control systems you will gain an understanding of the development and needs of corporate governance in the context of the control theories of the firm.

Dissertation: This is a 15,000-word research project that combines a review of previous research undertaken in your chosen topic with your own data collection and analysis. This provides a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills which are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase, your research will be supervised by an experienced academic with expertise in your chosen topic area.
