It is said that no two days as an adult nurse are the same. However common tasks include monitoring vital signs like pulse and blood pressure; meeting the hygiene needs of patients and providing care for patients. Placements

- Time spent on placement:
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

- Clinical settings:
At LSBU, you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations.

If you are based at our Southwark campus you are able to experience placements at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, University College London Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. You will also undertake a placement in the community.

If you are based at our Havering campus you are able to experience placements at Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital; along with a placement within the community.

Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look small groups of patients making confident, proactive decision for their health management with little supervision.

You will also have one four week elective placement in which you can choose a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.)

- Adult Nursing skills laboratories
We have two adult nursing skills laboratories at our Southwark campus and three at our Havering campus. Our nursing skills labs; set up like hospital wards are used by all student nurses and midwives throughout their courses. They learn manual handling and basic life support skills and skills that are specific to their field of nursing or midwifery.

- SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins: SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a student's actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or converted to female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse. This course is not suitable for applicants
already holding a qualification in diagnostic
radiography.
Diagnostic radiographers provide an imaging
service for most departments within the
hospital including, accident and emergency,
outpatients, operating theatres and wards.
X-rays are an imaging technique used by
diagnostic radiographers to visualise injuries
or disease, or monitor changes inside the
body. Diagnostic radiographers carry out
a range of procedures, which may include
cross-sectional imaging techniques such as
computerised tomography (CT), magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and
radionuclide imaging (RNI).

Teaching, learning and assessment

Academic study will be learner-centred with the analysis and synthesis of knowledge being of paramount importance. You will be expected to take overall responsibility for your learning. Teaching methods include keynote lectures, clinical workshops and tutorials, student-led seminars, group discussions, clinical observation and practice. Directed learning materials will be delivered via a virtual learning environment (Hub) and comprise readings, self-assessment quizzes, workbooks, tutorial questions with answers and narrated
lectures.

Clinical skills will be developed in work placements in radiology departments in hospitals in central Scotland, eg Lothians, Fife, Forth Valley, Ayrshire, Tayside and the Borders. In Year One there are 18 weeks of placement and 21 weeks in Year Two. Four of these weeks are on elective placement which you can take anywhere in the world.

A variety of assessment methods will be used, including online examinations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), self-appraisal, course work, ePortfolio, viva voce examinations and clinical assessment.

The MSc Diagnostic Radiography programme has a small cohort of 12 students to ensure that the clinical experience can be tailored to individual needs. Some academic modules have larger class sizes as students engage with other allied health professionals.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. The pattern of attendance at QMU will depend on the modules you are studying. In the first semester, attendance will be mainly on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Attendance at professional modules is monitored to ensure safety to work in the clinical environment. In clinical placements you will be expected to work the normal hours of a radiographer (ie full-time, Monday to Friday).

Links with industry/professional bodies

Following successful completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), a requirement for employment in the NHS. Student rates have been negotiated for membership of the Society and College of Radiographers (free for the first year of study and £48 for the subsequent year).

Once you have completed the programme and registered with the NMC, most people get some experience as a staff nurse, usually within community or in-patient organisations operating within the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors of health. The opportunities are endless but some ‘typical’ career options are presented below.
-Some people are keen to remain working directly with service users in clinical areas and seek promotion to senior staff nurse or ward sister / manager roles where their expertise is used to lead care given by a team of nurses. Some adult nurses develop particular clinical skills and knowledge that will allow them to become specialist nurses in a given area of care (e.g. district nurse, clinical nurse specialist or nurse consultant).
-These clinical grades co-exist within a wider career framework incorporating management roles such as Modern Matron all the way through to very senior board level roles such as Director of Nursing in an NHS Primary Care or Acute Trust. These roles involve managing multi-million pound budgets and directly leading/ managing a large number of staff as well as strategically influencing how the NHS responds to new developments.
-Some nurses develop interest in research and education and opt to pursue educationally focussed careers within the NHS or in further and higher education institutions such as the University of Hertfordshire. They still retain their professional registration and unique identity as an Adult Nurse but are involved in advancing nursing knowledge and influence through research and education.

Wherever your career takes you, as an Adult Nurse you will never stop learning and will undertake a variety of training and education throughout your career. -You may be placed in settings such as hospices and other private or voluntary organisations which care for a variety of medical conditions and illnesses and health care needs

Placements are organised in blocks of variable duration and will be located anywhere in London. Whilst on placement, you will be supported by a mentor (a qualified nurse who has undertaken post qualifying learning in practice based education); a link lecturer (an academic from within the school who supports mentors in placement areas) and wealth of supportive services available on campus through the student union and student services.

Recent years have seen an increased awareness of how some children and adults can be vulnerable to abuse. As a consequence policies and legislation have been developed to try and safeguard such individuals. However, it is still common for practitioners in health and social care to find themselves in situations where they are supporting vulnerable people.

There are many ways that people can become vulnerable to harm. This raises the questions, “What is vulnerability?”, “Is it inevitable?” and “What are the best strategies for seeking to reduce/eliminate vulnerability?” The course is designed to assist you in critically examining such questions in the context of professional practice.

This covers issues such as sociological and psychological perspectives on vulnerability associated with particular client groups; assessment and planning of interventions, multidisciplinary working and the evidence base for practice.

You will be introduced to key ethical frameworks, ethical decision making, law and policy development. As well as legislation relating to capacity, consent and human rights; safeguarding children, policy frameworks for the protection of vulnerable adults, research and vulnerable groups.

Learning and teaching methods

All students studying for the MSc Professional Practice are required to undertake the core research methods module (40 credits). In order to gain the MSc Professional Practice (Vulnerable Person) degree you will need to study at least 80 credits (including your 60 credit dissertation) relating to care of the vulnerable person. This means that you may choose to study one or both of the specialist modules discussed above.

These modules run on alternate years and are usually delivered via 3 hour sessions on a weekly basis during the academic year.

You will be taught via lectures, seminars and case studies. Past students have felt that they have gained a lot from such discussion with colleagues and learning about different approaches. You will also undertake self-study to develop your knowledge.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

This degree provides graduates with the knowledge to pursue a leadership role within the healthcare profession. Past students have come from a range of backgrounds including mental health, surgery, accident and emergency, learning disabilities, midwifery, school nursing, care of the older person, medicine and community.

Physician Associates are skilled members of the health care team who are qualified to provide a wide range of medical services in practice with a licensed physician. Training as a Physician Associate allows you to develop and direct your healthcare career in a primary care setting or almost any medical specialty. This flexibility is unique to the Physician Associate role and makes it an exciting new career choice. Physician Associate training is based on a ‘fast track’ medical school model that was developed in the U.S in 1965.

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Associate Studies is delivered within the University’s Institute of Medical Sciences at the Medway campus where students have the added benefit of training in a specialist facility with qualified medical practitioners engaged in postgraduate education and research.

You will spend a significant portion of the first year in the simulation suite learning hands on skills. The simulation suite is equipped with mock wards as well as a surgical suite with anesthesia and laparoscopic equipment. Highly sophisticated human simulation models will be used in the teaching of hands on skills to prepare you for your second year clinical based modules.

Course detail

The Physician Associate curriculum begins with a year of rigorous medical science, pharmacology and clinical reasoning taught by a qualified team of specialist physicians and Physicians Associates. One day per week in the first year is spent in a general practice clinical setting. The second year is comprised of six specialist clinical placements and intensive classroom teaching in advanced skills and concepts.

Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate diploma in Physician Associate Studies, you are eligible to take the National Exam for Physician Associates and be part of the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Registry (PAMVR) which allows you to be employed by the NHS. The profession is currently working towards regulation in the UK and is overseen by the Royal College of Physicians Physician Associate Faculty.

All modules are taught using a combination of teaching methods, including lectures, problem based learning, short case review and hand on/skills practice.

Lecture, practice based learning, case review and skills application are incorporated in each module to ensure students assimilate clinical knowledge and skills in all areas.

The course is aimed at people interested in pursuing a healthcare career in a primary care setting or almost any medical specialty.

How You Study

Due to the nature of postgraduate research programmes, the vast majority of your time will be spent in independent study and research, supported by additional research training opportunities. You will have meetings with your academic supervisor, however the regularity of these will vary depending on your own individual requirements, subject area, staff availability and the stage of your programme.

Included in the MD courses, as an integral part of the Emergency Medicine module, is a comprehensive programme of training in theoretical and practical aspects of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. All MD fellows who have obtained full General Medical Council registration are enrolled on a Resuscitation Council approved, 2-day, Advanced Life Support course. This internal course takes place at Ealing Hospital and when successfully completed leads to the award of an internationally recognised ALS provider certificate for all MD fellows. The costs of this course are included in the overall tuition fees for the MD programme.

Clinical placement

Students will be expected to spend four 10-week placements at other UK NHS Trusts. This will provide exposure to a broader clinical experience.

Teaching and assessment methods

Dedicated teaching fellows and specialist registrars assist module directors and external consultants, many of national and international eminence. The teaching is clinically-oriented and delivered on the medical wards, out-patients, Accident & Emergency department and in the ITU.

The Radiographic Reporting programme offers a depth and scope of knowledge, which incorporates a high level of clinical skill in the practice of image evaluation and reporting of the skeletal system. The modules fully integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skill, facilitating your development as a competent and reflective practitioner.

The programme incorporates key lectures and guided work-based learning, along with practice assessment, evaluation and report writing for radiographic images of the skeletal system. This programme has significant work-based elements, therefore it is essential you have effective support and mentorship in your base department. The work-based learning component is well structured and monitored by us through clinical visits. The LSBU PACS has a wide range of relevant cases that will supplement work-based experience.

The programme offers the option of pathways in appendicular only or complete skeletal reporting. The five core modules sit within the postgraduate degree scheme and you may undertake the three Year 1 modules alone for appendicular only (PgCert) or the remaining two modules for the PgDip.

Our MSc Adult Nursing course has been designed for graduates with care experience who wish to develop a career as a registered nurse and join one of the most rewarding professions in health care. Our course will provide you with a wide range of experiences and prepare you to deliver high quality care with confidence. All of our pre-registration nursing courses are developed by nurses for nurses and will support you to work with health care teams to meet the needs of vulnerable adults requiring health care across a variety of settings. Learning and working at Masters level will support you to shape and improve your future profession and the health care experiences of patients in your care.

Adult nurses have a unique role within the healthcare setting. Making a positive change or improving the quality of people’s lives is a central tenet of this role. This may involve enabling people to improve, maintain, or recover their health, and to achieve the best possible quality of life, whatever the circumstances.

We are committed to the principles and values of the NHS Constitution (DH, 2013) and our Adult Nursing course promotes the behaviours and values that patients and staff believe to be at the heart of our NHS. These include respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives, working together for patients and the understanding that everyone counts.

The course places equal value on clinical practice and theory. It will take you from university lectures to clinical placement settings, from young to mature adults. You may well find yourself at a GP surgery, working with mulita-skilled teams in patients’ own homes or in the middle of a variety of hospital settings, from accident & emergency through to medical or surgical areas or providing compassionate care for patients with life limiting illnesses.

We’ll support you all the way. You’ll soon discover that our faculty is a stimulating place to learn, with modern facilities and registered, practising tutors who’ll make sure you’re being taught the latest techniques. We’re passionate about healthcare and dedicated to delivering the values set out by the NHS Constitution.

You’ll have the chance to share experiences and knowledge with other health care disciplines and to see how the professions work together.

Teaching on campus takes place between 9am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. On placement, you’ll be allocated to a mentor who will support your development and you’ll be expected to work the same shifts as the health care team and your mentor. Each week you will work 37.5 hours. This will include early, late and night shifts, as well as working weekends and bank holidays. Each year, five weeks’ of annual leave is built into the course at set points to support you in balancing your course and relaxation time.

Each of the two years is divided in three 30-credit modules. Each module will start with theory, followed by a hospital or community placement. A series of short Medicines Calculations modules are also embedded through the course.

Placements last around 5 weeks and will include both acute and community settings. Placement opportunities include: Older Person’s Care, Dementia Care, District Nursing, Surgical Setting, Acute Care Nursing and many more. Your final placement will be 12 weeks in length and you will also undertake additional placements each year which will enable you to explore other areas.

You’ll be linked to one of our NHS healthcare trust partners for your placements in hospitals or community settings.

If you study in Cambridge or Peterborough, you’ll do your placement in or around Cambridge, Huntingdon or Peterborough. You’ll get plenty of support from experienced mentors.

Our state of the art skills laboratories provide an ideal environment in which to learn a suite of practical skills in the safety of the university. This ensures that you gain understanding about the underpinning evidence that supports these skills, preparing you for the delivery of these skills in the practice setting.

In year 2 of the course you may choose the option to undertake an overseas placement and gain insight into another health care system.

Careers

All pre-registration nursing courses delivered by Anglia Ruskin University are approved by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). On successful completion of the MSc Nursing course, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration with the NMC and join a profession with a wide range of opportunity. You may choose to become a community professional, such as a practice nurse, or to work as a staff nurse within a hospital. With experience you could become a nursing specialist or nurse consultant. You may enjoy managing a health care team or leading a specialist team in, for example, the community setting. Nurses also undertake roles in research and education.

Year one, core modules -

- Evidence Based Knowledge and Skills for Nursing:
This first module aims to prepare students for the knowledge and skills required to deliver fundamental and safe care. A series of key strands which underpin nursing practice will be commenced in this module including: patient safety; human anatomy and physiology; health promotion and the recognition of the nurse’s role in public health; mental health and common mental health problems; leadership skills and the use of research evidence that underpins care provision. Communication and interpersonal skills will also be considered including principles of de-escalation and the importance of sound interpersonal and professional skills in practice.

- Promoting Professional Practice in Nursing:
In this module students will be supported to understand the significance of prioritising patients as central to the role of the nurse and a key component of the NMC Code (2015). Person-centred care will be addressed through the exploration of patient autonomy and patients' rights. The concepts of advocacy, raising concerns and candour will provide students with an understanding of the legal and ethical parameters that support the delivery of safe care. The module builds on knowledge of bioscience and clinical skills to further enhance delivery of safe fundamental care. Introductions to leadership, management and team working will be provided.

- Nursing Adults with Challenging Health Needs:
This module addresses the complexities of long term conditions and palliative care for adult patients. Preventing the development of long term conditions and life-threatening disease, promoting health and wellbeing and supporting adults with long term conditions to live well independently are key aspects of the nurse’s role. Effective integrated care is critical to the patient experience and students will explore the impact of national drivers from a theoretical and practice based perspective, with a focus on the use and effectiveness of care pathways. This module provides the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical skills and ethical and legal issues to meet the challenges faced by those affected by long term and life limiting conditions.
- Medicine Calculations for Safe Practice 1

Year two, core modules -

- Ensuring the Safety of Patients Experiencing Acute Illness:
Patients become acutely unwell in clinical or home settings. This module will provide students with the knowledge, skills and experience to recognise, communicate and respond competently when a patient’s clinical condition indicates that they are becoming acutely unwell. Students will explore how psychological well-being can impact on recovery and the importance of patient focused care and empowerment. Alongside theory input students will participate in clinical scenarios around deteriorating patients (e.g. acute respiratory failure, acute coronary syndrome, and sepsis). Computer-controlled mannequins and simulation skills environments will be utilised to develop students’ skills in recognising and responding to patient deterioration.

- Decision Making, Leadership and Management in Nursing:
This theory/practice module enables students to enhance their leadership, peer coaching and decision making skills. The module aims to develop a varied and flexible repertoire of skills to be able to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams, in the often challenging environments encountered in modern clinical practice. The module promotes students’ growth and expertise in professional knowledge and judgment, focusing on self-awareness and personal development. Development of key management skills of leadership, assertiveness, delegation and coaching will be provided as well as tools for resilience to withstand the stresses and pressures of practice.

- Major Project - MSc Nursing Adult:
This theory/practice module comprises a major project that is situated in and developed from the care setting. During the final practice placement, students will be expected to negotiate an area for service improvement to enhance the patient experience. This module will consolidate the knowledge, skills and attitudes gained in clinical management and leadership and seeks to complement these with insight to mechanisms for improving the quality of healthcare. Understanding and applying concepts of quality assurance, clinical governance, standard setting and the role of audit in maintaining standards will be key drivers.
