This programme provides advanced study of finance and is particularly suitable for graduates in finance and accounting related subjects who wish to prepare for careers in the financial sector. We welcome graduates from a wide range of disciplines who want to consolidate their understanding of finance. Many MSc graduates are now employed in banks and financial institutions in the UK and worldwide. Others have entered careers in higher education and research.

To improve your prospects in the graduate job market, CFA Level I dedicated training will be offered before the June 2017 exam to selected candidates on a competitive basis. MSc Finance students nearing completion of the ACCA Fundamentals stage will also be able to select a designated ACCA pathway.

Course Structure

You will study a range of modules as part of your course, some examples of which are listed below.

Core

Optional

Information contained on the website with respect to modules is correct at the time of publication, but changes may be necessary, for example as a result of student feedback, Professional Statutory and Regulatory Bodies' (PSRB) requirements, staff changes, and new research.

ACCA Pathway

This course has been designated an ACCA Academic Professional Partnership Programme by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).The globally-recognised ACCA qualification has been developed with employers, and provides you with the skills and knowledge to be work-ready, wherever you are in the world.

Provided you have the right qualifications on entry to the MSc, you can follow an ACCA pathway through the programme which provides a recognised level of tuition for two of the ACCA’s Professional-level papers: P2 (Strategic Business Reporting) and P4 (Advanced Financial Management).

Who is eligible?

To be accepted on to this ACCA pathway, you will need to have already passed ACCA’s Fundamentals exams F1–F9, or to have exemptions from the Fundamentals level. This is in addition to meeting the entry requirements for this course.

Pathway modules

On this pathway you have the same module choice as all other Finance MSc students, except that in the second term you must take the following modules. In the summer term you have a free choice of dissertation topic.

  • Advanced Corporate Finance
  • Financial Reporting for Complex Entities

CFA Qualification

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program is the leading professional qualification in the global investment industry. As a CFA Affiliated University, our MSc Finance and MSc Accounting and Financial Management programmes are recognised for their strong connection to professional practice and ability to prepare students for the CFA exams. Only a handful of UK business schools have been granted this status by the CFA.

These Masters programmes include a special CFA dissertation aimed at suitably qualified students wishing to sit the June CFA Level I exam and gain this prestigious qualification. You will benefit from five weeks of professional teaching by specialist CFA tutors from Fitch Learning covering the entire CFA Level I syllabus, supplemented by online support, key resources and real-time feedback via the Fitch Learning CFA training portal.

On completion of the module, you will sit a 3-hour mock Level I examination and the results contribute 42% to your overall dissertation mark. The CFA dissertation is available at no charge to all MSc Finance and MSc Accounting and Financial Management students who meet minimum performance criteria during the first term. CFA scholarships are also available to help you gain CFA Level I, and details are automatically sent to eligible students during Summer term.

Assessment Methods

Most modules use more than one type of assessment including formal exams (normally January and March/April), individual coursework essays and assignments, group-based reports and case study analysis. To pass, you'll need an overall average of at least 50% with no more than three modules in the 40%–49% mark range (following resit exams). A minimum pass mark of 50% in the dissertation is also required for the award of the MSc degree.

Careers

For many students, the desire to boost their career prospects and move more quickly into senior roles is a key reason for acquiring a Masters degree. That's why we integrate careers support into our MSc programmes, and offer a range of facilities to help you in your career development and job search process.

Like all of the School’s Masters students, you will have access to guidance and support from the LUMS careers team. But to give you extra industry-specific job-hunting skills, we have partnered up with a financial markets specialist who has worked for several leading investment banks and also financial technology institutions. As a financial careers coach still working in the financial markets, his role is to make you aware of many different opportunities that exist within the sector, giving you a clear picture of the particular skills required – and, crucially, an insider view on what employers will be looking for.

To help you differentiate yourself in a fiercely competitive market, he provides guidance on writing CVs and cover letters for the financial market, interview skills, and performing well at assessment centres.

Overview

A ground-breaking master’s programme that enables you to gain an MSc degree and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time

The University of London and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountancy, are enabling you to complete an MSc in Professional Accountancy and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time. This route to the ACCA qualification will be of value to accountants aspiring to senior roles and enable them to stand out from the crowd in terms of their qualifications. Compared with the cost of studying for an accountancy qualification and a master’s separately, this will save time and money for many ACCA students.

The MSc modules are the first to be recognised by ACCA as counting towards the professional level of the ACCA qualification. You have flexibility regarding how you structure your studies and there are different pathways to the award depending on the level of entrance requirement that you have met. The University is providing a unique opportunity for you to choose face-to-face study support in London [pdf] for two modules of this programme. The programme pathways are outlined below.

Prestige

The modules on the new MSc in Professional Accountancy are being developed with academic input from UCL, one of the University of London's constituent Colleges. UCL is ranked seventh in the world's top universities (QS World University Rankings 2015/16).

Who will benefit from this programme?

The opportunity to gain a prestigious master’s level qualification is open to ACCA students, affiliates and members, no matter what stage they are at in their professional qualification journey.

ACCA members who are qualified and affiliates who have completed all the ACCA assessments can follow a route to ‘top-up’ their professional qualification with this master’s.

ACCA students who have passed the fundamentals level of the ACCA qualification can opt to continue towards their ACCA qualification by using the master’s as an equivalent to two of their final ACCA papers.

Programme details

The three ACCA modules (P1 to P3) you study as part of your ACCA qualification give you accreditation for prior learning (APL) for 90 credits of your master's. The two University of London option modules will be recognised by ACCA as part of your professional qualification.

Interactive and supported study

You study using online learning resources that include: multimedia content, formative assessments, learning activities and facilities for you to interact with your tutor and your peers. You can study independently with online support including access to an online tutor or you can study at a teaching institution with access to a tutor face-to-face (if this is available in your location). In addition to monitoring online forums and responding to queries, online tutors provide an introduction to the module at the start of the session and guidance on assessment.

Your time commitment

You can study at the pace you choose whether part time or full time. You can complete the MSc in under a year or take longer if that is more convenient. Each module is studied over a 22 week session, requiring an average of 12 hours of study per week.

Structure and syllabus

See the pathways diagram [PDF 429kB] to check the pathways open to you - http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/sites/default/files/pathways.pdf

MSc for ACCA students Pathway 1 -

The MSc comprises the relevant ACCA papers (or their equivalent) and 2 x University of London (UoL) option modules and 1 x UoL project.

Postgraduate Certificate with possible transfer to the MSc -

The PG Cert comprises 2 x UoL option modules.

MSc for ACCA members and affiliates Pathway 2 -

The MSc comprises the relevant ACCA papers (or their equivalent) and 1 x UoL option module for ACCA members and affiliates and 1 x UoL project.

Assessment

The MSc and PG Certificate are assessed through a combination of elements including coursework, projects and written paper examinations. All elements of the assessment must normally be completed in the same study session. The grade awarded for each module will be based on all of the elements of assessment.

See the assessment table [PDF 15Kb] for more information about how the modules are assessed - http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/sites/default/files/module-assessment-weightings.pdf

The examinations take place locally twice per year in June and December. You do not have to come to London to take your examinations because we have examination centres around the world as well as in London. We arrange the examinations mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. The coursework and projects are submitted through the virtual learning environment by the deadlines in the study calendar.

Assessment is integrated with learning and teaching to support and demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes for individual modules and the programme as a whole. Emphasis is placed on the feedback function of formative assessment as part of the learning, teaching and assessment strategy as a whole.

The sectors and jobs that our MSc students achieve upon graduation vary depending on their previous experience and pathway taken. In terms of looking at career progression it is useful to consider where alumni are three years after graduation. Looking at the data derived from the School’s continued ranking in the Financial Times Master’s in Management Rankings, alumni continue to operate in a variety of sectors and that three years after graduation on average 25% of them are in senior manager roles and 20% in junior management positions.

Students are given a hands-on opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained in class, all whilst becoming more aware of diverse cultures and strengthening international relationships.

Students take part in a dynamic mix of both theory and practice-related activities including: interactive problem-solving workshops, company visits, talks by guest speakers (from the public and private sector), cultural visits, and social activities.

The MSc in Business Finance with professional placement is designed to enhance students' understanding of the operation of firms, with a special focus on the financing decisions they must make. Read more

About the course

The MSc in Business Finance with professional placement is designed to enhance students' understanding of the operation of firms, with a special focus on the financing decisions they must make. This requires an evaluation of the firm’s relationship to financial markets. It also requires an understanding of the theory and practice underlying corporate finance and investment decisions. By studying the operation and design of corporate financial systems, and analysing business financing and investment decisions, this masters programme should enable students to find a role within the finance department of large firms or in government bodies, as well as provide them with tools to help organise smaller businesses.

The objective of the Business Finance MSc is to produce graduates with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of business finance and company valuation within the context of modern financial markets, without necessarily requiring a high level of mathematical or statistical knowledge as a prerequisite. The key transferable research skills acquired will enable students to proceed to PhD study. In addition, the programme will equip students with the key skills required to undertake further professional development and seek career opportunities within financial management.

Aims

You will be provided with a rigorous treatment of the theory of corporate finance

You will be taught the econometric and mathematical techniques necessary to understand the literature and undertake empirical investigations in the area of finance

Through a selection of optional modules the course will offer you a broader perspective on the subject matter and willl allow you to cover specific areas in accounting and finance that are of specific interest to you

Course Content

The MSc consists of both compulsory and optional modules, a typical selection can be found below. Modules can vary from year to year, but these offer a good idea of what we teach.

The full-time Business Finance MSc programme is designed with four equally weighted modules in each of the first two terms, with three being compulsory and one an option from a list. The dissertation carries one third of the marks for the course and is undertaken after the modules have been completed. The part-time option is designed with two modules in each of four terms. The compulsory modules give an excellent coverage of core material in finance designed in a way to be applicable to business. The Business Finance MSc analyses the theory and practice of business finance, focusing on financial decision making within firms and how they interact with the financial markets and institutions.

Through the optional modules the course is also designed to offer a broader perspective on the subject matter and allows you to cover specific areas in accounting and finance that is of particular interest to you.

Compulsory Modules

Essentials of Mathematics and Statistics
Quantitative Methods for Business Finance
Foundations of Finance
Business Economics
Company Valuation
Business Finance
Business Finance Workshop
Dissertation

Optional Modules

Students must choose two optional modules from the following:

Either Financial Reporting in Capital Markets
Or International Finance

Either International Accounting Standards and Policy
Or Investment Valuation Models

Part-time option

Students must choose two optional modules from the following:

Financial Reporting in Capital Markets
International Finance

The Dissertation must be submitted in the spring term of the third year.

Special Features

A key feature of this course that distinguishes it from other finance masters programmes is that it emphasises the applied aspects of business finance and financial decision making within firms. As such, there is more focus on real-life, up-to-date analysis of business decisions and less emphasis on the theoretical foundations and mathematical underpinnings of finance. This is particularly suited to students who would like to enhance their knowledge of finance within a business context but who have backgrounds in a wider business or management field.

Now full-time students have the opportunity to spend time in industry with the Professional Practice placement. This allows you to not only apply what you learn in real-world situations, but will significantly enhance your employability prospects upon graduating.
Another feature is that the emphasis on the applied nature of financial decision making is reinforced through the Business Finance Workshop. This is a series of presentations and discussions of cutting-edge topics led by industry leaders and practitioners.

The course is one of four specialist masters programmes developed by leading experts in the Economics and Finance Department at Brunel. As a student here you will be part of a long standing and thriving environment for research and study with many advantages and benefits such as:

Outstanding academic expertise and research-led teaching
95% of our academics are nationally and internationally recognised for their work in economics and econometrics in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008)
As a result, you will benefit from up-to-the-minute research-led teaching by academic staff who regularly publish in international peer-reviewed journals, have an impact on international regulatory design and obtain significant research grants.

Professional training facilities
You will have access to a variety of professional databases used in business and the finance industry which include Datastream, Bloomberg, Bank Scope, Osiris, Reuters 3000 Xtra and Thomson One Banker
We hold regular training sessions and external visits with Bloomberg, which will enhance your research and expose you to real-world factors that will be important in future finance related employment.

Scholarships
Brunel offers a number of scholarships for UK, EU and international students.

Excellent links with leading organisations
We have excellent links with business and the finance industry, which will help you to network with organisations and get ahead in your career.

Industry talks, guest lectures and research seminars
A number of industry talks with professionals from the private sector will be invited to teach part of the programme and will provide you with further practical experience
There is a wide range of events on offer, such as guest lectures and research seminars to keep you up-to-date on the latest developments and will help build your contacts.

Teaching

Effective learning is achieved through a combination of lectures, seminars, directed independent study, workshops, oral presentations, and varied assessment patterns. Use of appropriate IT resources is expected (e.g. electronic resources to access data, and relevant software programmes used in research methods). Dissertation research will give you the opportunity to integrate your knowledge of important themes, frameworks and research findings in business finance obtained via lectures, seminars, and workshops.
Students who successfully complete a professional placement will be invited to attend a tutorial day to give a presentation about their experience. An optional reflective journal during the placement may assist in preparation for the presentation and dissertation.

Assessment

All modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and final examinations. Students who successfully complete the taught part of the course can proceed to the dissertation stage. Students who do not follow the pathway with Professional Practice are expected to work on their dissertation in the summer and to submit the final draft in mid-September. Students who follow the Professional Practice pathway will complete their placement during the summer and work on their dissertation afterwards, submitting in January.

Professional Placement

All students who enrol on the full-time Business Finance MSc will have the opportunity to complete a placement. A placement can significantly improve your employability and expose you to real-world situations in the Banking and Finance industry, and importantly, allow you to network with industry professionals.

Students completing the work placement option will have a competitive edge in pursuing careers as high-level analysts, economists and managers in financial institutions, governments, financial regulators, business companies and central banks, as well as international organisations.

The placement option is available to full-time applicants and will last for 12-15 weeks during the summer of your course. Placements will begin at the earliest in the last week of May and will finish by September Some employers may also provide a salary.

For students who complete the placement, their dissertation will be completed after the placement has finished. Students who do not find a placement will do their dissertation throughout the summer and submit in September.
