Why ACCA?

ACCA is the global body for professional accountants, with 162,000 members, 428,000 students and 91 offices in 173 countries. The ACCA Professional Qualification is therefore recognised and supported by top employers around the world. On qualification, students become Chartered Certified Accountants.

The qualification provides a solid grounding in all areas of business and finance, including reporting, taxation, and audit. In addition, it covers the value added areas of leadership and management, strategy and innovation, and sustainable management accounting. Further, it allows specialisation with option papers at the final level.

ACCA students are required to pass exams and undertake relevant work experience to become Chartered Certified Accountants. Both the exams and the experience requirements are set and approved by ACCA. Students are also required to complete the ACCA’s professional ethics module. See http://www.accaglobal.com for more information.

Students can commence studies in either September or January.

Five reasons to study ACCA at the University of South Wales

1. Award winning
We offer award winning tuition. We were the PQ Magazine ‘Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year’ in 2010 and 2012, and we have been shortlisted in 2011 and 2013-2015. We also have award winning students. Two of our final year ACCA students have won national prizes in both 2013 and 2014 for final level exam performance. In 2014, presented at the ACCA Cymru Wales annual conference dinner, Lucy Whittington and Farzana Ahmed jointly won the Sir Julian Hodge Prize for highest scores in final level papers in Wales. In 2013, James Leaves won the Terry Weston Memorial Prize, and Lucy Saunders won the Sir Julian Hodge Prize. Furthermore, in 2011, Newport ACCA student Amanda Say was the winner of the PQ Magazine ‘Part-Time Student of the Year’ Award.

2. Choice – We offer tuition in key South Wales locations
Our Professional Tuition Hub is located at our state of the art City Campus on the banks of the river Usk in Newport City Centre. Opened in 2011, City Campus has excellent teaching rooms, library and student catering facilities. City Campus is easily accessible from across South Wales and border counties – being near Newport train station and M4 Junctions 27 and 28 – and has ample safe, secure parking on the doorstep. We also offer ACCA tuition at our Cardiff Campus Atlantic House building, situated in the heart of the Cardiff Financial and Professional Services enterprise zone and close to our Atrium building with its first class student amenities.

3. Excellent study and employer resources
Study texts and other resources (including progress tests and mock examinations for all papers, to reinforce exam technique) are supplied to our students as part of the tuition fee. Our tuition sessions can be recorded and replayed by students for the duration of the teaching year. Student performance reports for sponsoring employers are available on request.

4. An experienced and focused tuition team
Our permanent professional course tuition team consists of 11 qualified accountants and 1 qualified lawyer (plus other subject specialists). Members of the team:
• have significant accounting practice and industry ‘first career’ experience, as well as vast experience of teaching students to pass professional exams;
• also work/have worked for the private sector tuition providers;
• provide CPD sessions for the local professional bodies; and
• engage in bespoke CPD training for large organisations.

We are able to supplement our permanent tuition team with excellent local visiting lecturers. Our team regularly attend professional body Lecturers’ Conferences.

5. Professional body relationships
We work closely with the professional bodies, locally and nationally. For example:
• We were the headline sponsor of the ACCA Wales national conference in 2013 and 2014
• We are members of ACCA’s Exam Review Board
• We hosted the ICAEW BASE Business Game in March 2015
• Our Academic Manager is a member of the South Wales Society of Chartered Accountants committee
• We have hosted CIMA CPD lectures at City Campus for a number of years
• The professional bodies regularly sponsor student prizes

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The ACCA Professional Qualification is relevant to each and every sector of accountancy and finance and opens up opportunities to work in a variety of different industries and roles across the globe. ACCA students therefore train in all sectors, although a large minority work in accounting practice. Post-qualification, Chartered Certified Accountants can work at the highest levels as chief accountants, finance directors, CEO’s and accounting practice partners, and many change sectors across their careers.

Overview

A ground-breaking master’s programme that enables you to gain an MSc degree and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time

The University of London and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountancy, are enabling you to complete an MSc in Professional Accountancy and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time. This route to the ACCA qualification will be of value to accountants aspiring to senior roles and enable them to stand out from the crowd in terms of their qualifications. Compared with the cost of studying for an accountancy qualification and a master’s separately, this will save time and money for many ACCA students.

The MSc modules are the first to be recognised by ACCA as counting towards the professional level of the ACCA qualification. You have flexibility regarding how you structure your studies and there are different pathways to the award depending on the level of entrance requirement that you have met. The University is providing a unique opportunity for you to choose face-to-face study support in London [pdf] for two modules of this programme. The programme pathways are outlined below.

Prestige

The modules on the new MSc in Professional Accountancy are being developed with academic input from UCL, one of the University of London's constituent Colleges. UCL is ranked seventh in the world's top universities (QS World University Rankings 2015/16).

Who will benefit from this programme?

The opportunity to gain a prestigious master’s level qualification is open to ACCA students, affiliates and members, no matter what stage they are at in their professional qualification journey.

ACCA members who are qualified and affiliates who have completed all the ACCA assessments can follow a route to ‘top-up’ their professional qualification with this master’s.

ACCA students who have passed the fundamentals level of the ACCA qualification can opt to continue towards their ACCA qualification by using the master’s as an equivalent to two of their final ACCA papers.

Programme details

The three ACCA modules (P1 to P3) you study as part of your ACCA qualification give you accreditation for prior learning (APL) for 90 credits of your master's. The two University of London option modules will be recognised by ACCA as part of your professional qualification.

Interactive and supported study

You study using online learning resources that include: multimedia content, formative assessments, learning activities and facilities for you to interact with your tutor and your peers. You can study independently with online support including access to an online tutor or you can study at a teaching institution with access to a tutor face-to-face (if this is available in your location). In addition to monitoring online forums and responding to queries, online tutors provide an introduction to the module at the start of the session and guidance on assessment.

Your time commitment

You can study at the pace you choose whether part time or full time. You can complete the MSc in under a year or take longer if that is more convenient. Each module is studied over a 22 week session, requiring an average of 12 hours of study per week.

Structure and syllabus

See the pathways diagram [PDF 429kB] to check the pathways open to you - http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/sites/default/files/pathways.pdf

MSc for ACCA students Pathway 1 -

The MSc comprises the relevant ACCA papers (or their equivalent) and 2 x University of London (UoL) option modules and 1 x UoL project.

Postgraduate Certificate with possible transfer to the MSc -

The PG Cert comprises 2 x UoL option modules.

MSc for ACCA members and affiliates Pathway 2 -

The MSc comprises the relevant ACCA papers (or their equivalent) and 1 x UoL option module for ACCA members and affiliates and 1 x UoL project.

Assessment

The MSc and PG Certificate are assessed through a combination of elements including coursework, projects and written paper examinations. All elements of the assessment must normally be completed in the same study session. The grade awarded for each module will be based on all of the elements of assessment.

See the assessment table [PDF 15Kb] for more information about how the modules are assessed - http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/sites/default/files/module-assessment-weightings.pdf

The examinations take place locally twice per year in June and December. You do not have to come to London to take your examinations because we have examination centres around the world as well as in London. We arrange the examinations mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. The coursework and projects are submitted through the virtual learning environment by the deadlines in the study calendar.

Delivered at Queen’s Campus Stockton, the MSc Accounting programme is designed to help prepare you to compete in an increasingly international job market.

Launched in 2015, our innovative MSc Accounting programme sits within Durham’s portfolio of Masters programmes. A one year full-time programme, it provides an opportunity for you to develop an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of accounting as well as the critical thinking skills so valued by employers. The MSc in Accounting covers key accounting topics including financial statements and their preparation, the practical limitations of financial reporting, and the regulatory framework and its complexities.

This is an ideal programme to choose if you’re looking to pursue a career in accountancy, finance and business.

ACCA Academic Professional Partnership Programme

A key feature of the programme is the ACCA AcademicProfessional Partnership Programme (APPP) from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Eligible students, alongside studying for their Masters degree, have the option to register with the ACCA for the APPP. This pathway provides a recognised level of tuition towards two separate Professional Level papers, P1 and P2 of the ACCA qualification. For more information on the ACCA qualification visit http://www.accaglobal.com

Please note: Students who have successfully passed ACCA’s Fundamental level exams, F1-F9, or have exemptions from the Fundamental level (in addition to meeting Durham University’s normal entry requirements for Postgraduate programmes) are eligible to apply for this pathway

To achieve your qualification you will need to successfully complete eight core modules, and a dissertation or business project. Should you choose to study towards the ACCA Academic Professional Partnership Programme you will also be required to sit two Professional Level papers, P1 and P2 of the ACCA qualification.

Core and elective modules

You will study:
-Accounting Theory
-Auditing and Assurance Services
-Contemporary Issues in Accounting and Taxation
-Corporate Governance
-Corporate Reporting
-Financial Planning and Control
-Financial Statement Analysis
-Research Methods & Methodology in Accounting

Dissertation/Business Project

In the third term you will complete a 12,000 word dissertation which could be a specific project with an organisation. Supervised by a faculty member with relevant experience, you’ll investigate in greater detail a subject that you’ve already studied as part of your programme.

This is an opportunity for you to develop your business insight and present your analysis and ideas in a scholarly and professional manner; combine critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the opinions of others.
Adding to your experience

As part of your programme, you have the opportunity to enjoy presentations by academics and practitioners within your chosen area of interest. Past speakers have included representatives of major global multinationals and leading academics, providing an ideal opportunity to gain practical knowledge and progressive insight.

Course Learning and Teaching

The programme is mainly delivered through a mixture of lectures, seminars, and practicals. Lectures provide key contents of a particular topic. Occasionally lectures might be delivered by guest speakers who are internationally recognised academic experts or practitioners in their field. Students can also attend the Durham Speaker Series, providing the opportunity to network with senior business leaders, staff and alumni.

Seminars provide the opportunity for smaller groups of students to solve problems and discuss and debate issues based on knowledge gained through lectures and independent study outside the programme’s formal contact hours. Practicals are medium sized group sessions, where students practice computer software, applying topics from lectures and seminars.

Students study 9 core modules including a 12,000 word dissertation to allow students to carry out independent research and develop their skills in analysis and scholarly expression, using an appropriate theoretical framework. They are supported in writing their dissertation through the study of research methods, and attending individual meetings with an allocated supervisor, who monitors their progress and provides advice.

Academic Support:
Throughout the year, students may have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. All students have an Academic Adviser who is able to provide general advice on academic matters. Teaching staff are also available to provide additional support on a one-to-one basis via weekly consultation hours.

Learning Resource:
Outside of timetabled contact hours, students are expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study in preparation for teaching sessions, assignments and other forms of assessment including exams, and general background reading to broaden their subject knowledge. All students have an Academic Adviser who is able to provide general advice on academic matters. Teaching staff are also available to provide additional support on a one-to-one basis via weekly consultation hours.

Students also have access to the facilities available at Queen’s Campus including dedicated postgraduate working spaces, an onsite library and IT helpdesk.
