Your programme of study

A good MBA can really make you stand out for the top jobs in any type of business in fast paced major growth, transformation, innovation and operational change in any country and business discipline area. You develop insights across the top discipline functions such as finance, strategy, economics and project management, marketing, leading and managing people, supply chain and new business creation. These are all disciplines within themselves which you rapidly acquire skills and knowledge to manage successfully. These are essential disciplines to many known high street brands, service industries, online businesses and high growth start ups which ensure that if you start a business using existing skills or a new team that you are likely to provide a high growth enterprise very quickly. Alternatively you may have been employed within a sector undergoing a real threat to business existence which involves you in making changes very quickly at operational level using the range of disciplines you learn.

In this situation you can overcome the threats quickly to ensure long term viability whilst managing short term risks to business and you can be a very sought after individual due to your ability to quickly assess what needs to be done with minimum impact to allow long term profitability. Many brands have recently been disrupted by mass communications and the rapid rise in online trading, some were able to quickly re-organise their business model to avoid going out of business, some were able to innovate and others relied on a wide variety of techniques to allow them to reinvent themselves. MBA positions are normally fast paced but very rewarding in terms of achievements and business satisfaction.

Your programme of study

Subsea Engineering is one of the most challenging areas within the energy industry due to the locations involved in minerals extraction. It is a vital part of the oil and gas industry and though it is technically challenging there is a lot of new technology coming online to improve supply and monitoring in the ocean.

You are taught by industry informed academics from two main energy hubs internationally in Global Subsea Engineering. At Aberdeen you have the combined expertise of academics who have closely followed the oil and gas since growth in the 1970s at Aberdeen from which they have been informed by industry in the city. In Perth Australia you are taught by another major university at Curtin who also work closely with their energy hub both in the Pacific and Asian regions. This partnership gives you the best teaching and future opportunities possible within the Subsea sector in your respective region. You are awarded with a degree from both institutions giving you strength in the global employment market and the level of knowledge you will carry with you.

You learn in depth skills, application and theory within subsea environments to ensure sufficient knowledge about control, risk management and maintenance, flow assurance, reliability and integrity. You can begin the programme with Curtin by taking Semester 1 and the Project module in Perth and Semester 2 in Aberdeen as an alternative. Graduates from the programme have gone on to successful careers as CEO and MD within existing business and new business and as specialists in Subsea Engineering,.

Your programme of study

If you are fascinated by protecting the environment across all areas that impact pollution control and health of all living things in sea/water, earth/soil and air this programme will be of real interest to you. You understand how to regulate and control harmful pollutant effects on all life on this planet and you learn how to ensure the polluter pays. You could decide to work for an energy company or any industry within its environmental regulation and protection area.

There is a balance of growth and just how harmful that growth can be without regulation and control. You could be the regulator and work in central government or local government or you could be the gatekeeper to pollution control to ensure it complies with regulation for your company. You could also work for NGOs and activist organisations such as Client Earth to clean up industries that appear to be affecting our potential future life on earth or consultants assisting individuals and groups to seek environmental justice.

The programme is ideally situated in the heart of the energy industry in Aberdeen City where regulators and energy providers work alongside. For the wide ranging environmental aspect you also benefit from highly protected environments nearby such as National Parks and restrictions on planning and development specifically to protect environment. In every day life you can be assured that there will be a constant demand for your skills as a consultant to work with business, groups and individuals to protect environment with the 'Polluter Pays' principle in terms of protecting basic rights relating to environment. There are many instances where our environment needs protecting in our daily lives from poor planning decisions to poorly regulated polluters.

At Aberdeen you get a full range of experts in energy law, drawing from historical and close links with the energy industry in the city and environmental law experts covering renewables, corporate environmental responsibility, and regulation. In Scotland alone there are many famous festivals such as the Fringe and Edinburgh Festival, the Fireballs Festival in Stonehaven near Aberdeen, Uphelia in Shetland, and the Cullen Skink contest in Cullen to name just a few. The programme is very exciting as it is multidisciplinary and you can choose a variety of different options in line with your own interest areas. This is not just a typical communications programme in the sense of simply writing press releases or articles, it offers you the chance to get involved in the build side of things and the actual communication of exhibitions themselves too.

You may be interested in bringing static objects to life from museums, you may be interested in the type of environment in which audiences engage with culture, or have an interest in Northern World.  You learn some very useful skills within marketing and creative writing to enable you to bring creativity to life to promote creativity to others.  Other optional courses include art history, archives, curating exhibitions and Cultural Property Law. If your interests lie in museums you acquire plenty of all round skills to communicate within marketing, exhibitions and events. The business skills you can learn are very useful to market, protect and lead teams within the creative sector.

Career opportunities can be as varied as the courses you study or you can choose to specialise within specific areas of the arts. You can work in museums, private and public collections, galleries (Contemporary and Historic), heritage attractions, castles, stately homes, arts organisations and charities, local government and arts initiatives, festivals and within marketing for these areas.
