This programme enables practitioners to gain a formally recognised standard of competence in their chosen area of Special Interest. It is taught and run by advanced clinicians, allied health professionals and service improvement specialists. It is designed for General Practitioners, Nurse Specialists and other medical professionals working in the specialty clinical environment.

There are four distinct versions of the Diploma, tailored to the following specialisms:

  • Cardiology
  • Diabetes
  • Gynaecology
  • Musculoskeletal Medicine with Rheumatology

As a part-time diploma, this programme contains a large element of work-based learning. Attendance is only required for a total of eight study days on five separate occasions throughout the 18 months, so is accessible to students nationally.

This well established programme is delivered by The Ridge Training Ltd., as an external partner to the Faculty of Health Studies at the University of Bradford. This falls under the collaborative provision regulations, so although the Programmes are taught wholly by The Ridge, quality assurance and assessment are governed by the University of Bradford regulations.

The programme structure is specifically designed to encourage the development of the specialist practitioner role, by encouraging collaborative clinical work-based training between the practitioner and the clinical mentor. The issues of ethics and informed consent are an integrated part of the students’ daily practice, and it is implicit in all the modules that there is conformity to the usual standards and guidelines in these areas.

During the programme the emphasis is on critical thinking, reflective learning and the practice of evidence-based medicine. Students are enabled to directly apply their learning to their current and future roles.

Each module has a number of set learning outcomes, and it is up to you, together with your self-identified local clinical mentor, to identify your learning needs and generate the training plan to fulfil these learning outcomes. You will have a teaching day on the clinical content of each module, after which you will attend at least 14 sessions in suitable clinics of your choice over a period of 6 months (clinical attachment). At the end of this period you will have to demonstrate your competency in managing patients, and an ability to critically reflect on your own practice.

Any module can be selected as a standalone if students do not wish to complete the whole programme. On successful completion of their chosen modules students will be awarded a Certificate. Students who successfully complete all modules gain the Diploma, and will be able to progress to the MSc for Practitioners with Special Interest if they wish. Students who successfully complete the Diploma will have greater breadth of knowledge of cardiology than those who complete the Certificate.

The Musculoskeletal Medicine with Rheumatology for Practitioners with a Special Interest version of the Diploma is endorsed by the Primary Care Rheumatology Society.

What you will study

Each module is worth 30 level 7 credits; this nominally equates to 300 hours of work.

120 credits are required to achieve Diploma level.

Certificate level can be achieved by completion of Applied Methodology plus one or two clinical modules.

There are 3 clinical modules, each takes 6 months to complete:

  • Ischaemic Heart Disease
  • Hypertension and Arrhythmia

MSK with Rheumatology

The Primary Care Rheumatology Society (PCR) endorse this programme.

There are 3 clinical modules, each takes 6 months to complete:

  • Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Upper Limb and Inflammatory Arthropathies
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Lower Limb and Metabolic Bone Disease
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar Spine and Chronic Widespread Pain Disorders

Gynaecology

There are three clinical modules, each takes 6 months to complete:

The Admissions Office functions as the first point of contact for all applicants once they have submitted their online application. Once enrolled, international students will join the students selected via a French undergraduate diploma and the Bachelor students selected via the French system of "classes préparatoires" and who have already studied one year at emlyon business school. These three selection processes are highly selective, and only an average one applicant out of 7 will have the opportunity to join the program.

Eligibility

The SAI selection procedure is open to candidates holding a Degree from a university outside France (Bachelor's degree, Licence, Master…) gained upon successful completion of at least three years of university education outside France; the degree being awarded by a nationally accredited higher education institution. 

Candidates must be less than 30 years old when taking the SAI selection tests. Candidates may apply the same year in which the degree is obtained.

The MA provides the requisite specialist techniques and advanced production skills which will equip students for a career in any of the major areas of the industry where moving image content production is focused: Film, TV, Games, Adverts and Trailers. Students are taught by working industry professionals and great emphasis is placed upon working to real-world briefs, to real-world deadlines and in a professional environment within a state of the art media technology facility. 

For the first 12 months (24 for P/T) students will engage with lectures, research, analysis and skills development classes as they further develop their specialist and collaborative understanding. They will also be taught through technical and creative workshops and project development sessions. All will all be a part of the normal timetables activities. You will also be expected to undertake independent study and practical individual and group work outside of the timetabled sessions.

Students will learn to process critical notes, to iterate their work and deliver a finished product on time, on budget and on brief. They will work collaboratively with post-graduate composers, directors, screenwriters and producers and they will have the opportunity to contribute to professional projects.

During the programme, and as part of the collaborative practice approach, MA students will be commissioned by the department to produce a professional quality short narrative film (10-15 minutes). They will receive a commercially viable budget and be expected to collaborate with other students across the programme and the wider department in successfully completing this commission.

Across the programme, but specifically the final 6 months, students are expected to immerse themselves in independent study and industrial interactions. You will be expected to be professional at all times and work towards establishing a professional network to assist in gaining career development opportunities.

The creative industries of gaming, TV, film and advertising all require well trained and professionally aware creatives for the numerous hours of content produced.

Assessment

Summative assessment will take the form of written and practical coursework, presentations & screenings, portfolio and project work. Formative assessment in the Creative & Digital Technologies Department is carried out through peer to peer and tutor feedback on work either through submission, workshops or tutorials regularly across all modules.

A total of 180 credits are required to be awarded the MA.

Feedback on submitted work can be accessed through our VLE digitally or by collected hard copies of work from the Administration Office. We endeavour to complete marking and feedback on all assessed work within a 3 week period though some modules, due to complexity of assessment, may take slightly longer.

Course detail

This full-time version is with Internship of 6 months duration, with dissertation development. This allows completion within 18 months. The Internship Course seeks to provide the same rigorous and challenging programme of professional practice as the MSc Applied Project Management but has the added advantage of including a 6 months internship incorporated into the period of study. This makes it ideal for students seeking to add a practical dimension to their studies and understand the demands of workplace supervision and management. Internship opportunities exist throughout the industry within the UK.

A variety of teaching methods will be used within course module deliveries especially to capture the applied aspects of project management. In fact the core modules were constructed with teaching variety methods from the outset. The pathways modules need to capture sector expectations and final dissertation offers a wideness of choice.

Assessment

The assessment offers a balance of assessment approaches of assignment only and some will have a mixture with an examination as an end assessment.

For example: The module Strategic Innovation Management initial assignment involves group work and requires a presentation creation and delivery. The final assignment is an individually developed document requiring you to conduct research on the use of projects in an organisation. There is no examination for the modules and assessment weighting 40/60.

There are only a total of 5 modules that require examinations as part of their end assessment for the course with maximum of only 4 examinations required for selected pathways.

Career and study progression

Project management plays an important role in nearly all organisation, from SMEs through to the largest global corporations. Knowledge and skills gained within this course will enable graduates to take on the role of project manager and/or become an effective member of a project management team.

Graduates are encouraged to further their study at the level of MPhil and PhD. We actively encourage students interested in research to make their interest known early on in their course.

Phase 1

Review of personal and professional learning, research competence and professional capability. The course recognises that the portfolio of material which is required as a pre-condition to admission to CIMA membership fully meets the requirements of this phase. Accordingly qualified members of CIMA move directly to Phase 2.

Part-qualified CIMA members would be expected to participate in Phase 1, which would typically take 6 months and to make a cogent and persuasive case for the relevant credits which demonstrates how they have evolved as a reflective practitioner.

Phase 2

Planning a Practitioner Research Programme. This involves the study of research methodology and exploring research methods which are appropriate to workplace research, and the preparation of a research proposal for implementation. Phase 2 typically lasts for 6 months.

Phase 3

The Professional Practice Project. This is a major piece of work related to organisational change and/or professional development. It enables candidates to demonstrate research capability in a professional context. This course is for overseas (non-EEA) pharmacists who wish to convert their existing qualifications so they can practice as a pharmacist in Great Britain. The University of Hertfordshire OSPAP is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

About the course

The Overseas Pharmacy Assessment Programme (OSPAP) is a full-time programme starting during September and ending in May. The teaching is undertaken over a 3 day week during the academic year which is divided into two terms.

The OSPAP will give you an insight into the way the National Health Service in the UK operates, inform you of the health regulatory laws and professional codes pharmacists must abide by, in addition to allowing you to integrate science based knowledge, such as pharmaceutics and microbiology, into clinical and patient focused settings.

The programme aims to prepare you for professional practice as safe, knowledgeable and up to date pharmacists. Whilst at the University you will be expected to act professionally and in agreement with the student Code of Conduct and GPhC Fitness to Practise standards.

Careers

After completing the OSPAP Diploma and successfully passing the subsequent GPhC pre-registration pharmacist training year, you will be able to register and practice as a UK qualified pharmacist in various environments, (including community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy industrial or academic establishments), undertaking a diverse array of challenging roles.

You are strongly advised to check the latest visa details or changes on the Home Office website and UK Border Agency website regarding working in the UK. This is very important as you will need to work as a pre-registration Pharmacist for 12 months after successfully completing the OSPAP course. Whilst every effort will be made to guide you through the application process, including assistance with interview skills and CV writing, please be aware that it is not the University's responsibility to secure you a pre-registration position.

Teaching methods

Teaching during the academic year is divided into two terms, with written assessment papers at the end of the academic year (May/June). During the programme, you will be taught and learn via a range of techniques, including formal lectures, laboratory based classes, on-line discussions, tutorials and simulation. You will develop a wide range of academic and practical skills such as written and verbal communication, team work and leadership capabilities, critical evaluation, clinical judgement and organisational skills. You will be expected to submit a variety of assignments regularly, as required by each module leader, in order to meet the specified learning outcomes of the programme.

Work Placement

As part of the OSPAP you will have the opportunity to undertake a short, supervised, hospital visit and a community pharmacy placement as part of your study modules. This practical component will require a letter of good standing from the police authorities in your country of origin if you have not been in the UK for at least 6 months. If you have been in the UK for at least 6 months you will need to complete a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) application form. In all cases students will be expected to attend our Occupational Health Department and receive any necessary vaccinations prior to attending placements.

MSc Nursing (Adult) Course Structure

The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Adult) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Adult) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Adult) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Adult) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Adult) is made up of five modules:

Assessments will enable Nursing (Adult) students to develop creative, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.

There are no tuition fees to pay for the MSc Nursing (Adult) for UK / EU students.

To be eligible for WEDS funding international students must have residency for 3 years (working and living) in the United Kingdom. EU area students can also apply. Standard fees apply for international students.

Careers in Nursing

Job prospects are very good for Swansea University Adult Nursing students, 99% are employed in graduate level jobs within six months of graduating.

The purpose of the Clinical Pharmacy Practice programme is to enable pharmacists who have at least 6 months patient-facing post registration experience to develop advanced knowledge skills and attributes in the professional practice of Pharmacy and ensure safe, effective and rational use of medicines. The programme will provide a wide range of opportunities to enable individuals to develop an in depth understanding of the evidence base and safety framework for healthcare and medicines management. The programme offers the opportunity for multi-professional working with others who are involved in the provision of health care. The changes in healthcare and the implications for the changing role of Pharmacists are integral to the development of this programme. Patient safety and medicines optimisation are integral to the goals of developing healthcare services and is fundamental to safe effective and rational use of medicines.

MSc Advancing Clinical Pharmacy Practice
This programme provides an opportunity to study a wide range of pharmacy practice, medicines management and public health related theory and to explore the professional practice of pharmacy in a clinical setting.

MSc Advancing Clinical Pharmacy Practice with extended placement
This pathway builds on the MSc Advancing Clinical Pharmacy Practice to allow students to demonstrate an advanced knowledge and systematic understanding of pharmaceutical care delivery in a hospital setting. This will be achieved by students undertaking 6 months of clinical rotations based in local NHS hospitals.

Application of modern IT techniques to complex problem solving is a theme that runs through the course. This course also covers broader issues of project and process management in Civil Engineering.

The Internship Course seeks to provide the same rigorous and challenging programme of professional practice as the MSc Civil and Environmental Engineering but has the added advantage of including a 6 months internship incorporated into the period of study. This makes it ideal for students seeking to add a practical dimension to their studies and understand the demands of workplace supervision and management. Internship opportunities exist throughout the civil and construction industry within the UK.

The course links these studies to the core subject areas of Civil Engineering including Structural Analysis, Sustainability, Geotechnics and Hydraulics.

Whilst there is the opportunity to complete empirical study the application of modern IT techniques to complex problem solving is a theme that runs through the course. The course also covers broader issues of project and process management in Civil Engineering. The internship will come at the end of the course following the successful completion of all taught modules.

During the Internship you will work for 6 months with an employer. The internship allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge to a practical work-based situation. It will allow you to improve existing skills and acquire new ones, explore various career opportunities, network and be part of a team. This will improve your understanding of the world of work and professional practice in the workplace. It will also enhance your career prospects, allowing you to focus on your potential career path.

Format

Diverse methods are used to explore all aspects of the field. A strong supportive culture exists amongst the course tutors which enable students achieve their potential.

Assessment

Course works or mini-projects make 50% of the total assessment. There is practical work, report writing, critical academic writing and the skills and knowledge gained in these contribute to a capacity to deliver a high quality dissertation.

All the core modules have end of term examination as well as mini- project. Module leader provides appropriate support throughout the module to ensure candidates are well prepared.

Alternatively, you may choose this course as the basis for further education or extensive research.
