Many of the guest speakers on the programme are senior executives with wide experience of logistics and give an insight into current approaches, practices and techniques being applied in the logistics sector.

It is particularly suitable for those who seek to develop an academic career in research. The core of the programme is the stream on international accounting which consists of three subjects taken over semesters 1 and 2. This is done within the context of supporting classes on accounting theory and research methodology.

By following a carefully selected set of courses covering energy resources (fossil and renewable), conversion technologies, electrical power generation, energy storage technologies, demand management, and energy economics. Graduates of this programme will be confident in all aspects of this subject. With a clear focus on smart Grid and Demand Management the programme provides;
- Knowledge and understanding of advanced scientific and mathematical principles relevant to the understanding, analysis and modelling of a smart grid.
- An understanding of fundamental facts, concepts, and technologies for demand management and energy storage.
- Knowledge and skill to apply engineering principles to design a system, component or process

All aspects of the smart grid are integrated in a dedicated smart grid modelling course, which provides the mathematical and computational skills to model a smart grid. This course is unique to this programme and will give graduates the skills they need to enhance their career prospects.

The Scottish Funding Council has made available 20 scholarships covering fees only to students with Scottish backgrounds. 5 of these places are reserved for applicants to this programme in the first instance. This course provides the foundations for the quantitative analysis of energy resources and conversion efficiencies through various technologies. It also places energy production and consumption into the wider field of environmental and socio-economic factors

This course introduces the range of Renewable Energy resources together with established and emerging technologies. It provides the skills for a quantitative assessment of the Renewable Energy resources and the expected energy and power output from typical or specific installations.

- B31GA Electrical Power Systems
This course covers the operation of interconnected electrical power systems. Such interconnected power systems combine a number of different components, generators, transmission lines, transformers and motors, which must be appreciated to understand the operation of the interconnected system.

This course introduces students to the core concepts and methods of modern economics, and environmental and energy economics in particular.

This course introduces the mathematical skills to model the operation of an electricity or energy network at a statistical and dynamical level, incorporating key elements of a smart grid, including technological constraints, economic drivers and information exchange.

This course equips students with an understanding of the role of distributed generation in electrical energy networks. It provides students with an overview of distributed generation techniques and describes the contribution of distributed generation to network security. The course introduces the economics of distributed generation and the assessment of distributed generation schemes. It introduces students to the concept of intermittent sources and their contribution to capacity in electrical power systems and provides a detailed review of the reliability, fault and stability studies of distributed generation schemes.

- B51GK Demand Management and Energy Storage
This course provides students with an overview of demand-side management and its contribution to network capacity and security. It reviews energy storage technologies and their contribution to the integration of renewable generation and the operation of large-scale electrical network. It introduces students to the methods of interfacing energy storage mechanisms to electrical networks. The course describes the contribution energy storage technology can make to transportation and industry

- B81EZ Critical Analysis and Research Preparation
This course provides research training and addresses literature review skills, project planning, data analysis and presentation with a focus to critically discuss literature, and use data to support an argument.

An individual project led by a research active member of staff or an industrial partner on a topic relevant to smart grid technology, demand management technologies or approaches or smart grid/ electricity / energy systems modelling.

Overview

Oil and gas remains one of our major energy resources and the recovery of these resources is increasingly important, just as it was in the last century. What has changed with time is the need to recover more of the reservoir, operating in harsher environments both physically and economically. Equally there are challenges due to changes in knowledge and the relative lack of experience from engineers in the market. Traditionally in the UK, the vast majority of engineers entering the industry do so through two routes; first as facilities or surface engineers - chemical and process, mechanical and electrical engineering working on the processing systems to stabilise fluid from the reservoir. The second route is through the petroleum engineering or sub-surface engineering route which sees engineers develop knowledge and skills necessary to locate, drill and extract oil and gas reserves.

This programme (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-oilandgas-technology/ ) was been designed with the help of the industry to provide a cross over between surface and sub-surface engineering functions with the intent that future oil and gas operations can be better optimised to enhance recovery of the reserves. In order to maximise recovery, surface engineers in an operating company must communicate effectively with the reservoir and production engineers within their own company as well as develop relationships with and assess the work of contractors and vendors when designing and constructing facilities. Therefore, surface engineers need to be competent not only in the areas of process design, pipeline engineering, but also be familiar with reservoir engineering, production technology and a variety of other engineering and management subjects, such as safety and control, management of projects, economics and planning, etc.

The programme contains 8 taught courses covering key topics in surface and sub-surface engineering. Two projects towards the end of the programme provide opportunities for participants to demonstrate their knowledge in the design of a surface facility, and to study a specific topic of interest.

Major activities are based around optoelectronics, laser development, semiconductor physics, materials technology, ultra-fast phenomena, modern optics, and instrumentation. This course is designed to give you a broad understanding of the environmental, political and socio-economic context for current developments in renewable energy. The course examines the extent of current energy resources and how energy markets function. It covers some energy basics you will need for the rest of the programme (e.g. thermodynamics, efficiency conversions) as well as environmental issues associated with energy use, climate change and the political and policy challenges involved in managing energy supply and achieving energy security.

- Economics of renewable energy
This course gives an understanding of the economic principles and mechanisms which affect energy markets today. It covers price mechanisms, the economics of extracting energy and the cost-efficiency of renewable energy technologies. You will learn about economic instruments used by policy-makers to address environment and energy issues, economic incentives to stimulate renewable energy development and about environmental valuation.

- Environmental Policy & Risk
This course explores the legal and policy context in which renewable energy is being exploited. You will gain an understanding of international law, particularly the Law of the Sea, property rights and how these relate to different energy resources. The course also looks at regulatory issues at the international, European and UK level, which affect how energy developments are taken forward, as well as risk assessment and management in the context of renewable energy developments.

- Environmental Processes
Particularly for those without a natural science background, this course provides a broad overview of the environmental processes which are fundamental to an understanding of renewable energy resources and their exploitation. You will study energy flows in the environment, environmental disturbance associated with energy use, and an introduction to the science of climate change. You will also learn about ecosystems and ecological processes including population dynamics and how ecosystems affect and interact with energy generation.

- Renewable Technology I: Generation
This course explores how energy is extracted from natural resources: solar, biomass, hydro, wind, wave and tide. It examines how to assess and measure the resources, and the engineering solutions which have been developed to extract energy from them. You will develop an understanding of the technical challenges and current issues affecting the future development of the renewable energy sector.

- Renewable Technology II: Integration
This course explores the technical aspects of generating renewable energy and integrating it into distribution networks. You will learn about the electricity grid and how electrical power and distribution systems work. You will find out about different renewable fuel sources and end uses, and the challenges of energy storage.

- Development Appraisal
Looking at what happens when renewable energy technologies are deployed, this course examines development constraints and opportunities: policy and regulatory issues (including strategic environmental assessment, environmental impact assessment, landscape assessment, capacity issues and the planning system). It also looks at the financial aspects (valuation of capital assets, financing projects and the costs of generating electricity) and at project management.

- Development Project
This is a team project, where students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned through the other courses in relation to a hypothetical project. You have to look at a range of issues including resource assessment, site selection, development layout, consents, planning and economic appraisal, applying the knowledge and tools you have studied.

- Optional design project
For students who can demonstrate existing knowledge covered by one of the courses, there is the option of understanding a design project supervised by one of our engineers.

- Dissertation
This research project (equivalent in assessment to 4 taught courses) allows you to focus on a specific area of interest, with opportunities to collaborate with businesses and other stakeholders. You choose your dissertation subject, in discussion with your supervisor.

- Introduction to Marine Spatial Planning
This course introduces students to the emerging policy and practice of marine planning (global and regional). It examines political, jurisdictional and rights issues in the introduction of economic activities into the marine commons (the ‘Blue Growth Agenda’). The framework of marine legislation is explained and methods of conflict resolution are explored. A series of international case studies will identify the various tools and techniques being used around the world to manage human activity and balance conservation interests with demands for economic growth.

- GIS
Geographic Information System mapping is a tool which is now widely used by both developers and regulators in the management and development of marine resources. Within the context of Marine Spatial Planning the use of GIS has rapidly become the standard means of collating and analysing spatial information regarding resource use. This course will explain the principles and provide hands-on experience of applying state of the art mapping software in project based case studies.

Electrical energy networks and the methods by which electrical energy is generated are changing. Generating resources are being connected to the distribution network rather than the transmission network. These distributed resources include renewables and conventional thermal plant. The techniques used to generate electrical power are also changing. This includes increased renewable generation, primarily from wind resources, and embedded generation which includes co-generating (thermal and electrical) plant. The integration of distributed generation within existing networks causes particular problems in the control of power flow, power quality and protection. Also exploiting renewable resources requires novel and innovative engineering.

Graduates of this course will develop critical understanding of the significant changes electrical energy networks and the methods of electrical generation are currently, and for the foreseeable future, engaged in and the implications of these changes. This course will develop graduates of a calibre capable of developing and implementing creative solutions to the problems encountered in renewable energy and distributed generation and the supply of electrical energy in general.

Entry to the actuarial profession is by a demanding series of examinations, but the rewards after qualifying are great. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK has four levels of examinations to qualify. The first level, the Core Technical (CT) subjects, are taught in our BSc or MSc in Actuarial Science and lead to exemptions from CT1 to CT8.

Leading on from this, our established and successful MSc in Actuarial Management (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-actuarial-management/ ) covers the more advanced actuarial subjects and offers exemptions from the syllabuses of the Core Application subjects CA1 and CA3 and Specialist Technical subjects ST2, ST4, ST5, ST6 and ST9.

Students will typically study CA1, CA3 and up to three ST subjects (two ST subjects are needed to satisfy the profession's requirements).

Taking our MSc in Actuarial Management is a great way to speed your progress to this most prestigious of careers - it's designed to take you almost all of the way to qualification. A student who graduates with a full set of exemptions from Heriot-Watt (CT, CA and ST subjects) will only have three more examinations to pass, as well as gaining the necessary work experience, to qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Programme duration

The PG Diploma comprises the taught coursework component leading to exemptions from CA1 and the ST professional subjects and takes 9 months to complete. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In the taught element of the programme each student takes eight semester-long courses. These are linked in pairs, one per semester. One pair of courses – covering Actuarial Risk Management – is compulsory and corresponds to subject CA1. It applies the principles of actuarial mathematics to a wide range of financial and insurance settings. Students choose a minimum of two pairs of courses from a list including Life Office Management (subject ST2), Pensions (subject ST4), Investment and Finance (subject ST5), Derivatives (subject ST6) and Enterprise Risk Management (subject ST9).

The choice of courses may depend on the coverage of actuarial subjects in the student’s first degree. Depending on individual circumstances, other optional courses may be made available, for example courses from the MSc in Actuarial Science or in other disciplines. However, students choosing to take three pairs of courses, potentially leading to exemptions from three ST subjects, will have an exceptionally broad range of employment opportunities.

Students may graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma at the end of the 2nd semester, after completing the taught coursework component leading to exemptions form CA1 and the ST professional subjects. Programme duration

This full-time programme course starts in mid September and lasts one year. The programme can also be taken part-time over 2 years or as a 9 month Postgraduate Diploma.

MSc in Data Science

This programme teaches the theory and skills for managing and analysing very large and complex data sets, sometimes referred to as Big Data. Students will learn how to model, store and process these data sets using the latest algorithms and techniques. They will also learn about modern methods and tools for visually exploring them.

The programme is research led and students will benefit from the interaction with staff who are involved in internationally leading research projects in the field. The skills acquired by students will be applicable to industrial applications as well as scientific data exploration such as business intelligence or e-health.

This full-time programme starts in mid September and lasts one year. Admission requires a good honours degree with a substantial academic component of Computing or IT that includes study of databases and programming.

Project
In the third semester (May-August) students undertake a specialist MSc project which is written up as a 15000 word dissertation. This project enables further development and consolidation of skills introduced in the taught courses, applying them to a challenging practical problem in this subject area.

Introduction

Over recent decades the fashion and textile industries has been making changes; responding to enviromental and social needs; publishing corporate social reports and working with industry bodies and NGOs. Yet the Rana Plaza disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 was tragedy for the workers, their families, the country and the industries, and an imperative for new thinking, new practice, and fresh ethics. It is a horrific milestone for fashion manufacture, communication, consumer awareness and industry responsibilities. The industries are now reaching out to governments, NGOs, charities, unions and radical thinkers for advice and support. They are accountable for their current and future ethics. Without doubt it is time for change in which education is a crucial contributor to the new solutions, and alternative futures for the industries.

The new MSc Ethics in Fashion (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-ethics-in-fashion/ ) is a research led, taught programme, focussed on analysing and understanding the industry, whilst mapping the changes in practice, monitoring the voices and diversity of stakeholders in the supply-chain. The programme offers a chance for ethically aware graduates and established professionals to refresh and extend their knowledge and skillset. An escalating need for an Ethics in Fashion programme has been identified, and Heriot-Watt University is in a unique position with subject specific research faculty, global industry links, outstanding fashion and textiles facilities and an enviable pastoral location, with strong transport connections.

Our students

The taught programme has been created for those wanting to work, or already working in the fashion and textiles industries, in design, sourcing management, buying, journalism and corporate affairs. The qualification provides a set of fresh perspectives and insights for an existing first degree qualification, or relevant experience in any of the above areas or similar for those wanting to be part of the dynamic changing industries.

Industry links

The School of Textiles and Design, and the research staff have strong global industry and NGO links in design, corporate social responsibility reporting and corporate affairs, social enterprise. In addition teaching staff are Fellows of the Fellowship of 500, in the Ethical Fashion Forum. There are both courses, and research opportunities to work with local and international industry.

The programme has been designed to utilise selected core postgraduate courses offered within the School and introducing courses specific to Ethics in Fashion, thus encouraging inter-disciplinary participation and discourse, and membership of the a growing research community.

Objectives

- Analyse the ethics in supply-chain practice
- Speculate on, and develop, effective methods of communicating ethics
- Identify and map outcomes and consequences of unethical and ethical practice
- Speculate and apply new criteria within the supply-chain
- Analyse the motivations and roles of consumers in the ethics discourse and practice
- Identify best practice models across the traditional fashion and textiles industries, social enterprise and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- Research independently the role of ethics in fashion practice and theory

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group written course work, and projects and the Masters dissertation. Emphasis is placed on rigorous academic standards as well as acquiring and developing a range of transferable industry skills and individual development. Assessment exercises can therefore include making effective visual and oral presentations, writing reports and as well as team and group work.
