Overview

This is an advanced course for students who want to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the biology, welfare and conservation of domesticated and wild animals managed for production or leisure.

Course Modules

The MSc programme is delivered over 1 year on a full-time basis during two teaching blocks (semesters one and two) and a period of supervised and independent study (summer). It may also be completed over a two-year period on a part-time basis. The first two semesters (15 weeks each) include 4 taught modules. The dissertation is studied during the subsequent 20 week period in the summer. Each taught module is worth 15 credits whilst the dissertation is 60 credits.

The full MSc degree course consists of 120 compulsory taught credits plus 60 core credits from the dissertation. The Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) can be awarded with 120 taught credits. Whilst a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) can be awarded on the successful completion of any 60 taught credits. Credits obtained from the dissertation can also be used when considering whether a postgraduate diploma can be awarded. Before progressing onto the Masters dissertation from the Diploma, students would need to complete the Research Methods module or its equivalent as a prerequisite.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally hold a good BSc Honours degree (2.2 or above) from a recognised university in a related science subject such as animal science, agriculture, biological sciences, zoology, veterinary or bioveterinary science or other appropriate life-science degree. Applicants with a BSc (Hons) 3rd class pass, with extensive industrial experience may also be considered for the Masters programme. Applications from non-UK students are particularly welcome. All applications received will be reviewed and decisions for admission to the programme will be made on individual merit. Applicants may be interviewed if there is some doubt over the extent of academic qualification or linguistic skills.

Applicants for whom English is a second language are required to demonstrate a level of competence that enables them to study at a postgraduate level. A test score of 6.5 is required in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests.

Learning & Teaching Methods

The teaching methods are a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, visits and student managed learning. The self-guided study takes place under the supervision of experienced staff from the Centre of Equine and Animal Science at Writtle University College. Students are assessed using a number of methods, for example written examination, reports, essays, seminars, debates, oral presentations, case studies and project dissertation.

The research project is an essential part of the MSc programme and provides the opportunity to carry out an independent piece research, critically analyse data and write a dissertation. The project will normally include hands-on practical experimentation to teach students how to gather and process data and problem solve. The project is supervised by an academic member of staff and takes place over an extended period during the spring and summer. The project can be based either at Writtle University College or other suitable external institution.

Careers

Graduates are likely to use their award to secure management-level jobs and/or to improve their promotion prospects if they are already employed both in international and national organisations. Many opportunities exist in either government services or related agencies services: for example senior positions in DEFRA as quarantine officers or animal health inspectors. There are also numerous career opportunities in companies specialising in farm animal nutrition and pet food manufacturing, breeding and reproduction, veterinary medicines and pharmaceuticals. There also opportunities in charities engaged in animal welfare such as the RSPCA, zoos, animal rescue centres and safari parks. Also, independent wildlife agencies such as the RSPB, Scottish Natural Heritage, Natural England, and the Countryside Council for Wales would be interested in Animal Welfare and Conservation graduates. Some graduates may take up lecturing positions in universities and colleges or proceed to do further postgraduate study e.g. PhD.

Part-time student fees for each semester will be charged on a pro-rata basis. There are limited bursaries for part-payment of fees (for UK students only) from the Alice Noakes Memorial Trust. Applications for these bursaries can only be made via the course manager on admission to the course.

Course outline

We instil a fundamental belief that young people and communities deserve high quality and professional workers. You'll develop a commitment and desire to promote social justice. The course gives new and experienced staff a chance to reflect on the current and changing experience of young people, particularly those facing multiple disadvantages, and to explore what the best youth work process should be.

All students must complete a full-time placement and a further 148-hour placement during their time on the course. It is possible for students working in a Youth and Community work setting to use their place of employment as their substantive placement.

A wide range of teaching methods are employed throughout the course, including workshop activities, case study analysis, role plays and simulations. Students are expected to manage substantial independent study, which will be supported by the university's virtual learning environment 'Blackboard'.

Graduate destinations

You'll have a professional qualification validated by the National Youth Agency and recognised by the Joint Negotiating Committee. This will allow you to work in a diverse range of youth and community settings, including youth services, domestic violence charities, homelessness projects, drug and alcohol projects, prisons, young offender institutions and community development projects.

You may wish to take your studies further by taking a Masters degree.

Other admission requirements

-All entrants to the programme must have evidence of successful study at undergraduate level and demonstrate an ability to study at Level 6. This will normally be through having completed a foundation degree or Diploma in Higher Education or similar qualification at Level 5 or higher (including a 3rd class honours degree or ordinary degree).
-Students will be invited for interview and should be able to demonstrate experience of work in youth and community work contexts.
-Applicants must demonstrate through interview an understanding of the professional role of youth and/or community workers. They should normally have gained experience of youth work/community work as either an active participant, volunteer or staff member for at least six months prior to starting the course (this should normally equate to at least three hours each week, or a minimum of 72 hours in total).
-Candidates will be required to be approved as medically suitable by the University Medical Officer
-All applicants must complete an enhanced DBS clearance disclosure form since they are regarded as potentially having unsupervised, substantial access to children and young people.

FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM

Teaching and learning

Students learn through a combination of tutorials, lectures, and off-site visits. The Laboratory module consists entirely of hands-on experiments, and the Project module is practical investigative work, conducted under the supervision of a tutor where necessary.

Members of the teaching team are all highly-experienced and award-winning lecturers. Senior IOA Diploma teacher Bob Peters is a member of the IOA education committee and author of book Acoustics and Noise Control (3rd edition), widely used by students studying the Diploma.

Fast-track your legal career with our Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) conversion course. Designed for students who want the challenges and rewards of a legal career, but don't have an undergraduate degree in law, or for those who have significant work experience, but no formal qualifications.

Many employers are attracted to GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market, as you offer additional skills and experience to their organisation.

This course will provide you with a thorough grounding in core legal subjects. Offering high levels of face-to-face teaching contact in lectures and workshops, and an open door policy for academic or pastoral advice, the environment is supportive and friendly. We also offer a Careers and Employability adviser to help you take the steps into a fulfilling legal career.

You will begin by developing a strong understanding of the English Legal System, alongside an introduction to legal research and law-related information technology. You will then move onto the Foundations of Legal Knowledge, a series of units that will introduce core legal concepts. This knowledge will lay the foundation for your future training at LPC or BPTC level. The Legal Skills and Practice module is specifically designed to bridge the gap between academic and professional study.

These courses are delivered at the University’s purpose-built Law School by a highly experienced academic team from a range of professional backgrounds. Your tuition will be delivered through a variety of methods including lectures, seminars, directed learning and electronic learning. There is the opportunity to expand your legal network through attendance at our guest speaker and careers events, and to hone your legal skills through involvement in one of our voluntary legal work schemes providing pro bono legal services to those who would otherwise be unable to access them.

The course runs from September to June but prior to this you will receive an induction pack, including a link to our online revision and self-testing resources. Our induction programme is designed to provide you with a sound understanding of the English legal system and an introduction to Manchester Law School and the facilities we offer.

For full-time students, the course operates a typical teaching week of 40-45 hours including an average of 13 hours face-to-face contact teaching time.

Part-time students learn via a mix of lectures, face-to-face and online workshops. Classes are typically on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-9pm. An evening consists of a one hour lecture in two subjects together with an hour long tutorial in one of those subjects (with the other subject tutorial the following week).

Manchester Law School alumni have found success in a range of law firms, barristers chambers and non-legal organisations in the UK and internationally, including some of the most well known names in the profession.

There are opportunities for GDL students to take part in pro bono (voluntary) work experience in a wide range of areas. Manchester Law School currently works with partners including: Lawworks, Partners of Prisoners (POPs), Amicus, Personal Support Unit and Manchester Mediation Service.
