Why this programme

◾You will examine human anatomy and reconstruct it in a real-time 3D environment for use in education, simulation, and training.
◾You will have access to the largest stereo 3D lab in Europe, and its state-of-the-art facilities such as laser scanner (for 3D data acquisition), stereo 3D projection, full body motion capture system, haptic devices and ambisonic sound.
◾You will also have access to the Laboratory of Human Anatomy at the University of Glasgow, one of the largest in Europe.

You will split your time between the Glasgow School of Art (Digital Design Studio) and the University of Glasgow (Laboratory of Human Anatomy). The programme is structured into three stages.

Stage one: digital technologies applied to medical visualisation (delivered by the Digital Design Studio at the Glasgow School of Art)

What you will study

3D design at postgraduate level includes 3D modelling, animation, video and motion graphics. Modules are designed to meet current industrial needs, technology and practice.

The programme offers four specialist pathways; Virtual Environments; Architecture; Computer Games and Visual Effects.

There are six taught modules, each module is taught over a twelve week period. Each week consists offormal lectures, lab work, tutorials and private study. On satisfactory completion of the modules,you proceed to a major project and submit a final dissertation for examination. This is completed overa three month period following the taught modules.

Digital Media Technology and Development

An introduction to digital media hardware and software tools, and methods of production and organisation. The student will learn 3D visualisation and animation techniques using the latest 3D software applications.

Digital Video and Motion Graphics

Develop skills and practical knowledge of digital video/film productiontechniques and the association of digital motion graphics media production.Application of creative technique will cover elective areas such as short filmproduction, documentary production, 3D animation composition, titlesequence generation and abstract motion graphics effects.

Digital Media Publishing and Commercialisation

Progress the work of the Digital Media Technology and Development module of Trimester A. The intention is to provide a full understanding of the subject material relevant to the development of a broadcast level digital media project.

Digital Portfolio and Industrial Production Techniques

This module will provide practical knowledge of digital media publishing techniques suitable for the production of portfolio media. Students will investigateand demonstrate knowledge of a range of digital media tools and techniques for the promotion of skills within a portfoliopresentation. Critical analysis of various types of digital media delivery platforms,copyright issues, and digital marketingstrategies will be covered. This modulewill also provide an overview of how 3Dmodelling and animation fits within the context of the particular industry sectorwhich is relevant to the students areaof specialisation.

Research and Project Methods

This module aims to provide students with the background knowledge and skills that, in combination with the technical skills acquired in other taught modules, will enable them to carry an MSc dissertation through to a successful conclusion. Students will study all aspects of the processes underlying both capstone projects and research projects, and will relate these to available tools, ethical considerations and professional issues.

MSc Project

The Project acts as a vehicle for extendingthe knowledge and understanding of thestudent and the technical community insome specialist technical area. It serves,through its length, complexity andrigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending,in the student, a range of personal,interpersonal and communication skills.In addition, it serves to develop andextend a range of high-level thinkingskills, including analysing and synthesisingskills and affords the opportunity for thestudent to demonstrate initiative andcreativity in a major piece of technologicalwork. The MSc in Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy is a one-year taught postgraduate programme offered by the School of Simulation and Visualisation at The Glasgow School of Art in collaboration with the Laboratory of Human Anatomy, University of Glasgow.

The course presents a unique opportunity to combine actual cadaveric dissection with 3D digital reconstruction, interaction and visualisation using state of the art virtual reality facilities. It allows students to examine human anatomy, and to reconstruct it in a real-time 3D environment for use in education, simulation, and training. This Masters programme provides an ideal opportunity for enhancement of research into human anatomy, diagnostics, simulation, and visualisation, and is accredited by the Institute of Medical Illustrators.

Programme Structure:

The MSc Medical Visualisation & Human Anatomy programme is delivered over one year (45 weeks) in 3 Stages. Students undertaking the programme will split their time equally between the University of Glasgow and the Glasgow School of Art. About this degree

Students gain a grounding in the principles and skills of spatial research, data analysis and visualisation, agent-based models and virtual environments, and develop an understanding of research methodology for data collection and analysis. Subject-specific modules provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in spatial analysis and to contribute to current debates in the field. They will learn programming skills in Java/Processing, Python, R, JavaScript and SQL, and the ability to use a range of interactive geospatial and visualisation tools (ArcGIS, Unity, Mapbox and CityEngine).

The MA in Architectural Visualisation is jointly taught by Kent School of Architecture and the School of Engineering and Digital Arts. Building on the successful Master's programmes in Computer Animation and Digital Visual Effects, this MA enables students to develop at an advanced level the skills, knowledge and understanding of digital simulation and 3D modelling which will equip them to become highly skilled professionals in architectural visualisation.

Drawing influence from both architecture and film, this programme offers a progression route into both industries, highlighting the different requirements needed for each profession while exploring the similarities of these markets. The course is structured using a combination of lectures, seminars and hands on recording (including the use of laser scanning and photogrammetry) and model development to enable students to understand the process of creating original 3D datasets from critical approaches and project planning through to technical execution and delivery. Utilising experienced professionals from the fields of heritage management, buildings recording and 3D modelling the candidates will benefit from the courses' novel approach to fostering multi-disciplinary study in heritage, architectural visualisation, animation, interactive software development and archaeological practice.

The course is aimed at graduates and professionals with a background in any area of 2 or 3 dimensional design. You will learn how to apply design visualisation techniques and strategies to areas such as product design, interior design, graphic design and various other specialisations. Students will evaluate, choose and apply relevant theories, concepts and techniques to the solution of design and the knowledge that underpins it.

Graduates from this course can use their acquired knowledge and skills in a variety of jobs including: design practice: in-house and consultancy; design entrepreneurship- self-employment; 3D design visualisation in interior design, architecture, product design, 3D virtual environments for games; education as teachers/lecturers of design-related topics.

This is a 45-week course divided into three 15 week trimesters. Each trimester is divided into a ten week structured programme followed by five weeks of independent learning and reflection.

Modules

The Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) stage offers a choice of modules in which you will study Design Realisation which has a choice of project briefs from other MA programmes within the school, such as Interior or Product Design and Design Visualisation. Here you will complete a project showcasing your analogue and digital visualisation techniques, also exploring the potential of processes that are not totally dependent on digital technologies. These include evolutionary mock-ups, scenario enactment, physical modelling, two and three-dimensional collages and other animation techniques.

The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) stage offers a choice of modules such as Competition or Collaboration and Collaborative Practice (Co-Lab). The competition brief will be based on a contemporary project where you will initially collaborate with other product or interior design MA students. Co-Lab offers a choice of exciting project briefs which can then be incorporated into the planning of your personal project. Each project brief will demonstrate your strengths in a chosen range of visualisation techniques, and the potential of those techniques for enhancing the effectiveness of an appropriate design process.

The Master's stage will require completion of a personal project.

Assessment

Assessments will take place during individual/ group presentations at interim stages and at the end of each module. Immediate verbal feedback is given to students during the interim stages and written feedback is given at the end of each module.

The MSc provides students with the skills to become a key part of this explosive growth, and potential to become key innovators in this exciting and rapidly developing area. The MSc offers students with prior programming/scripting experience the transferable skills to design, develop and analyse games and simulations for a range of application areas and to conduct interdisciplinary research in the serious applications of games technology, particularly in healthcare, education and training.

As Virtual Reality and interaction technologies approach mainstream adoption, new opportunities for the application of immersive games technologies in engineering, medicine and in the home are putting games at the forefront of innovation worldwide.

Cloud computing is revolutionising the way that large, and often complex, datasets are stored and analysed. Our course aims to produce experts in cloud computing and big data required by academia and industry.

The MRes can only be applied for as part of the four-year (MRes plus PhD) EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data. The programme is suitable for students from both computing and mathematical backgrounds. It is very skills-focussed and also offers a high degree of research training.

Our course focuses on both theory and practice so that you can understand and implement cloud computing applications. You will cover key subjects such as advanced object-oriented programming, data mining and big data analytics.

All academic staff involved in teaching cloud computing modules have international reputations for their contributions to the field and some have extensive experience as practitioners in industry.

Delivery

During the MRes you will undertake advanced Masters’ level training in cloud computing and data analytics. The training will begin with a module in either computing science for mathematicians (for those with a statistics background) or statistics for computing scientists (for those from a computer science background).

All students will then be taught topics including statistics for big data, programming for big data, cloud computing, machine learning, big data analytics and time series analysis. The taught component will finish with a substantial group project, where you will have the opportunity to work with students from different backgrounds on a practical industry-focused data analysis problem.

Following this in years 2-4, you will carry out PhD research, guided by PhD supervisors from within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data, and typically additional advisors from industry.

Facilities

You will have access to free cloud computing resources to manage your research, a purpose-built Decision Theatre and 3D visualisation facility and a 3D printing learning lab.

You will be based in The Core building, where you will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in key areas of computing science, as well as access to industrial partners. You will also receive funding to attend selected conferences in emerging areas of your research discipline. We also offer funding for equipment and software to support your research.

The MSc Animation & VFX at DJCAD is an exciting Masters course which allows a much broader interpretation of traditional animation. Digital animation techniques have allowed us to visualise the world around us from the farthest reaches of space to the darkest depths of the oceans.

Digital animation techniques have allowed us to visualise the world around us from the farthest reaches of space to the darkest depths of the oceans. With the increasing appetite for fantastic stories and images there has never been a better opportunity for animators, artists and designers to develop new ways of communicating different stories. Using 2D and 3D computer animation, practitioners are shaping our knowledge and understanding in areas as diverse as digital visual effects, medical imaging, architecture, environmental design, product design and film making.

What's great about Animation and Visualisation at Dundee?

This course represents an opportunity for animators, artists, designers and those with associated experience to extend their skills and discourse within both animation and visualisation. We offer dedicated 2D, 3D and visual effects facilities providing you with a unique opportunity to develop your own visual practice. Our new Visual FX studio is one of only two within a UK university.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) has been rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK (RAE 2008).

What you will study

The Masters is a one-year programme, taught over three semesters. Core modules and optional modules provide a balanced curriculum. Masters students are required to attain 180 credits which comprise seven modules, as follows.

Semester 1 (20 credit modules):
Exploring Practice - enhances understanding of the process and skills associated with 2D and 3D animation production, problem solving and creative practice.
Context & Review - contextualises conceptual and theoretical skills in relation to contemporary and emerging technologies and cultures.
Research Skills & Methods - refine your personal programme of research and development, to inform the planning and execution of your personal project.

One week at the beginning of the first semester is dedicated to induction and diagnostic testing to establish where support is required, especially for international students.

DJCAD operates a Reading Week during week 6 of the first semester. Reading Week is designated as five days where there are no timetabled taught classes. However, all students are expected to carry out either assigned work or self-directed work during this period. All University facilities are open during Reading Week with students expected to attend the University as usual.

Semester 2 (20 credit modules):
Advanced Production - extend your existing skills in 2D and 3D digital computer animation. This module will help you to apply these skills to your personal project.
Reflection on Practice - guided independent learning in which you will focus on a project report.
Going Live - you will work on a live industry initiated project called Going Live. This experience will replicate the studio experience with a professional brief set by an external production studio. Industry partners have included The Mill and Axis Animation.

Semester 3 (60 credits)

A&V - Realisation, final 60 credit semester will result in you creating a substantial body of work and taking part in a public exposition.
You can choose to leave with a postgraduate diploma with 120 credits, or a postgraduate certificate with 60 credits.

How you will be assessed

Students are assessed by course work, including team project work, exploratory and finalised practical work, and written work

Careers

Prospects for graduates exist in research and within the vfx, 3D and 2D animation and visualisation industries. Specific roles include 3D Vfx Artists, Compositor, Character Designer, Technical Director, Environments Designer, Character Animator, Self-employment and entrepreneurship will also offer potential career opportunities. Academia careers including Research Assistant on funded projects and PhD study.
