Learning & teaching

The MSc in Public Policy comprises of core and optional classes and a dissertation. The core classes provide an introduction to the theory and practice of public policy, as well as a range of skills and methodologies relevant to designing, conducting and reporting on social research.

All classes are taught in small-group seminars. You’ll receive considerable time and attention from our staff in the seminars and individual supervision sessions.

If you’re studying part-time you’ll attend classes across two academic years. You’ll work on a dissertation over 10 months.

Classes average 20 contact hours, with additional computer laboratory sessions for some methods classes. Part-time students attend classes across two academic years. They then work on their dissertation over the course of 10 months.

The LLM in Advanced Legislative Studies offers a unique opportunity to drafters, legal officers, policy makers, and those interested in the process of lawmaking and in drafting to study the legislative environment and legislation as a tool for regulation. The programme aims to promote an understanding of the principles of legislative studies, and an in-depth awareness of what constitutes legislative quality and how this can be achieved. The programme is not prescriptive and allows participants to naturalize their knowledge and apply it in their own national environments. Capped class numbers allow individualized tuition. Alumni are usually employed by governments and international organizations.

Legislative drafting is often perceived as a technical skill, which one learns on the job. The view of the Sir William Dale Centre, as eloquently put by its founder and its staff in numerous publications, has always been that legislative drafting is a phronetic discipline requiring awareness of the theoretical principles of drafting along with experience on the job. Legislative drafting has evolved to become the bedrock of political, economic and social transformation. It is still, however, relatively unexplored as an academic discipline. The LLM examines issues related to the policy process, the legislative process, and the drafting process. Legislation is viewed as a tool for regulation. Effectiveness of regulatory aims is the scope and aim of the drafting process.

LLM in Advanced Legislative Studies is also offered via distance learning (DL).

The LLM in ALS via DL includes a compulsory week-long intensive residential course in London. This gives students a chance to meet the tutors and other students, and to start their studies with the maximum level of support.

Teaching methods for the remainder of the course include extensive online materials per session, such as PowerPoint presentations, hand-outs, and a number of academic sources for essential and further reading; online discussions with tutors and fellow students on the traditional LLM and the LLM via DL; private reading and independent research; individual tuition and support via email for coursework and dissertation for which a dissertation supervisor is assigned.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework, namely by two written essays of 3,500 words each for each of the courses of the LLM. For the two modules students are assessed by one essay of 5,000 words. The pass mark for all examinations and the dissertation will be fifty per cent (50%), the Merit Award will be between 65 and 69% and the mark for Distinction will be seventy per cent (70%), as required by Regulation 10.25 of the Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees.

This course was designed in conjunction with The Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), the leading body for the professional development of direct, data and digital marketing and will develop both the theoretical and practical knowledge of digital and marketing concepts that are vital in today's business environment.

The focus of this programme is to equip future marketing managers with the knowledge and understanding of the traditional academic theories, concepts and frameworks of marketing strategy and planning and be able to apply them in the contemporary digital environment. Traditional campus based course

Full-time route (12 months)

This route require you to take three modules over one semester starting in January and finishing in June. You will then have until December to submit your 20,000-word dissertation. International students will need to study full time and complete the whole course in two semesters due to visa requirements.

Part-time route (24 months)

The part time route will enable modules to be taken over two semesters. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until the following December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

Blended route (24 months)

The blended learning route will enable you to study at home for two semesters before progressing to the dissertation. Each semester will include one or two intensive workshops introducing the core subjects, which are then supported extensively by online learning materials, presentations and webinars. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until thefollowing December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

Modules

- Contemporary Marketing (20 Credits)
This module provides a theoretical look at the world of consumers and their behaviour in the digital environment, drawing on consumer behaviour, product, brand and communications theories to interpret and understand how consumers are respond to different technologies. This module sets out to enable students to learn how to operationalise the key marketing, consumer behaviour and communication theories to enable students to critically appraise the swiftly changing digital marketing channels in the light of marketing theory.

- Digital and social media (10 credits)
This module provides an intensely practical education in the core digital technologies, such as websites, search, display media, affiliate networks and mobile. Students will explore how they are being used and can assist in the delivery of marketing goals.

- Research methods (20 credits)
This module provides students with the learning, tools and techniques necessary for the completion of their dissertation, the final component for students wishing to obtain a Master's degree in Digital Marketing. Students will learn about the methods and tools of research and develop an understanding of the logic, sequence and structure of a research project, thus enabling students to design a logical structure for their dissertations. The aim of the module is to ensure that students are aware of the vast array of methodologies available to them and facilitating their ability to produce an original piece of work which adds to their existent body of knowledge and will help students explore the sources and types of information required for the research projects and the practical challenges associated with obtaining information.

Under normal circumstances, the period of candidature is 12 months of full-time study or 24 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course. The maximum period of candidature for both tracks of the MSc Programme is 24 months of full-time study or 36 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course, inclusive of approved leave of absence and medical leave. Leave of absence of up to one year will not be counted towards a candidate’s maximum candidature. Subsequent leave will be considered as part of the candidature.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The graduation requirements for both Thesis Track and Project Track are as follows:

(a) Thesis Track: students are required to complete six core modules and any two elective modules.

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or faculties/schools.

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory thesis. The thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.

Format

The program is typically completed in 24 months and contains rigorous training in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and econometrics, as well as elective courses in a range of applied fields. What kind of life will it be for the seven billion people who will live in existing or developing cities? Cities hold tremendous potential, but at the same time are sources of stress, inequalities and pollution. We're working to improve cities to better support fulfilling and diverse lifestyles.

Urban design has an important role in determining both the current and future form of cities. The responsibility for the development and management of cities is becoming increasingly shared.

This course is designed for practitioners and students to enhance their understanding of the city as a complex and dynamic system.

While your focus will be on physical planning and the design of urban spaces and buildings, the various influencing factors that affect form will also be considered.

The major topic is the European metropolis, or city region, within the context of globalisation. You’ll learn to develop appropriate strategies for sustainable urban development. This will encompass social, political, economic, environmental, architectural, aesthetic and psychological aspects.

You’ll study

Your course is delivered through studio work, lectures, seminars and a research project.

The studio involves work on the design of a complex urban area. This includes the levels of the entire city, the neighbourhood and the individual public space defined by urban architecture.

The course is strongly linked to the Urban Design Studies Unit's research agenda. All that is taught in both classes and studio is based on our excellent research record and helps advance it.

The department is in a partnership board with the department of Urban Studies at Glasgow University. Its renowned teachers and researchers contribute a real estate and policy and practice overview to the course.

Learning & teaching

Courses are taught through lectures, seminars and studio work as well as a piece of research (MSc students only).

Lectures and seminars are delivered through a variety of modes including short intensive sessions to allow for flexible booking by CPD and part-time students. There's also occasional site visits.

The taught element of the course starts from a solid grounding in urban design history and theory. It then concentrates on current urban challenges, from climate change to the pressures for development in both developed and developing countries. It culminates with the research work carried out in the Urban Design Studies Unit and teaches you the unit’s ethos and approach to urbanism.

We regularly organise a guest lecture series linked to the taught and design element of the course. The Urban Design Studies Unit also organise specialist events. Assessment

Assessment criteria are linked to the learning outcomes set for each individual class and these are published in the modules descriptors which are available to students. The criteria is also explained by staff at the start of each class, to make sure that you're comfortable and clear with what is expected of you.

The assessment of studio work is developed collaboratively between staff and students. Learning outcomes are linked to criteria and performances. This increases your sense of ownership of the learning process and is integral to the course.

On successful completion of studio and classes you’ll be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. If you complete an additional research element you’ll receive an MSc in Urban Design.

Other admission requirements

-Overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.
-If you do not meet these criteria you can apply for the Graduate Diploma in Business and English. This is a pre-masters course that gives you the opportunity to improve your English language skills and business knowledge. After passing this diploma we automatically offer you a place on one of the masters degrees offered by Business and Finance.

Gain the knowledge and skills to develop or enter a career in marketing, particularly in international organisations on this masters course. To be successful in dynamic markets, you need the ability, knowledge and attitudes to ensure you manage effectively. This course provides you with these.

You develop your knowledge and skills in the current key areas of international marketing, including:
-The practical problem solving skills needed by companies operating in international markets.
-Understanding customers and international consumer behaviour.
-Cross-cultural understanding – to become an effective manager through international marketing planning.
-Dynamic entrepreneurial marketing and innovation – creating and developing your own product or service and bringing it to the point of launch.
-Building confidence in your sales and presentation skills.

As part of the course, you work on a live consultancy project for three months for a UK based company under academic supervision.

The placement option offers you an additional opportunity to develop your practical skills, either in the UK or abroad. We help you gain a placement by running employability workshops and have dedicated placement team to support you.

The course reflects the professional requirements of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
