There is still a shortage of qualified engineering specialists in the oil and gas sector, with skilled professionals enjoying competitive salaries.

This programme trains specialist engineers in oilfield structural design, fabrication and installation. It is aimed both at engineering and physical science graduates who are interested in working in the oil and gas industry and practising professionals who wish to specialise in the design, analysis and construction of oil and gas installations.

Aims

With high demand for qualified oil and gas engineers, graduates enter a global job market and can expect exciting career prospects - a trend that looks likely to continue for years to come.

As the industry now seeks the rapid drilling and commissioning of new wells to meet energy demands, along with major investment in heavy oils and shale oil and gas, skilled engineers who can rapidly design and commission oilfield installations will be the backbone for growth in this industry. It is precisely this type of engineer that Brunel’s programme will develop.

A distinguishing feature of the course is its ambition to instil systems thinking, by treating structures and their operating environment holistically as a system – helping graduates develop the skills to address a wide range of complex engineering problems rapidly.

Course Content

The programme duration will be 12 months for full-time study, or 24 months for part-time.

The taught part of the programme will take place during the Autumn and Spring terms over 24 weeks. Students will be encouraged to start planning their dissertation at the beginning of the programme. During the Summer term, students will be expected to focus their effort on their dissertation project, researching the dissertation topic full-time. Part-time students will be allowed an extended period to execute their dissertation project in line with the overall programme duration. However, they will be expected to devote an equivalent of at least one day per week on their dissertation project.

This programme has been developed with extensive consultation with the industry. It will be delivered by Brunel staff members and by industrial specialists. The programme structure is shown below and comprises two parts:

Core modules: The taught part of the course (Part 1) worth 120 credits. This includes a set of compulsory modules that provides fundamentals of structural and process engineering, and focuses on providing an understanding of how to design oil and gas structures such as pipelines, offshore and onshore to withstand internal loading induced by complex internal flows of oil and gas and also external loads such as waves and wind. Throughout fundamental mathematical, computational, experimental, testing and inspection techniques as well as codes of practice are taken into account. Civil engineering and construction aspects are also taught.

Dissertation: Your dissertation project forms Part 2 of the programme and is worth 60 credits.

Term Three (MSc Only):

Dissertation
Students will conduct a major piece of research (c. 30,000 words) in an area of oil and gas engineering.

Delivery will take place in block mode teaching with each module requiring a week-long teaching schedule. Laboratory sessions will take place at specialist facilities in the week following the module delivery and will last for up to three days each.

Part-time (24 months) MSc and PGDip:

In the part-time mode, four taught modules are taken each year with the completion of the dissertation following in term three of the second year.

Full-time and part-time (12 and 24 months) PGCert:

Students must take the Design and Construction Installations and Petroleum Production Fundamentals modules and select any other two modules.

Work Placements

Brunel has a purpose built award-winning Professional Development Centre with over 30 staff, including specialist industry consultants. The Placement service includes CV writing, one-to-one guidance and mock interviews. Brunel was named ‘Best University Placement Service’ at the Rate My Placement Awards in 2012.

Teaching

Students are introduced to subject material, including key concepts, information and approaches, through a mixture of standard lectures and seminars, laboratory practicals, self-study and individual research reports. Supporting material is available online. The aim is to challenge students and inspire them to expand their own knowledge and understanding.

Preparation for work is achieved through the development of 'soft' skills such as communication, planning, management and team work.
In addition, guest speakers from industries will provide a valuable insight into the real world of the oil and gas sector.

Many elements of coursework involve, and reward, the use of initiative and imagination. Some of the projects may be linked with research in the College's research institutes.

Assessment

Each module is assessed either by formal examination, written assignments and laboratories or a combination of these. Cut-off dates for receipt of assignments are specified at the beginning of the academic year. Examinations are normally taken in December and May.

Special Features

Students will be able to access laboratory facilities at the recently formed NSIRC site which are extensive, modern and well equipped.

Although we recruit a large number of highly qualified students to our undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees each year, we don’t forget that you are an individual. From the beginning of your time here, you are allocated a personal tutor who will guide you through academic and pastoral issues.

The College is research intensive as our academics are actively involved in cutting-edge research. Much of this research is undertaken with collaborators outside the University, including leading oil and gas companies, construction companies, water utilities, and other leading industrial firms. We work with universities in China, Poland, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, Denmark and Japan. This research is fed directly into our courses, providing a challenging investigative culture and ensuring that you are exposed to up-to-date and relevant material throughout your time at Brunel.

You will have one-to-one supervision from an experienced member of staff, supported with supervision from industry partners as required.

Delivery

The School of Computing and School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics deliver the course. The course starts in mid-September. You will be taught in state-of-the-art facilities in the newly-opened Urban Sciences Building. The course has three phases.

In phase one you’ll be introduced to core knowledge and skills in statistics and computer science. These modules are taught as an intensive block. Pairs of modules will be taught concurrently over four weeks of lectures and lab classes. Teaching is timetabled to accommodate participants from industry, working alongside full-time employment.

Phase two will present further advanced technical modules. You will be introduced to the aspects that underlie all areas of data science practice:

  • professionalism
  • legislation
  • ethics.

This phase also includes a group project in collaboration with industry. You'll develop and evaluate a data science solution to a complex, real-world problem.

Phase three is an individual research and development project. You'll receive personal supervision in one of the School’s research labs in collaboration with industry or with your current employer.

You'll be assessed by a portfolio of practical work, accompanied by an oral interview. There will be no written examinations as part of the Data Science MSc.

If you’re a part time student, you have the flexibility to study over two years. The part time version of the course encourages participation of practitioners from industry. As a part time student you can:

  • align your assessed work with the priorities of your job role
  • carry out your individual project in your place of work (as long as the supervisory processes in place meet University standards).

This course was designed in conjunction with The Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), the leading body for the professional development of direct, data and digital marketing and will develop both the theoretical and practical knowledge of digital and marketing concepts that are vital in today's business environment.

The focus of this programme is to equip future marketing managers with the knowledge and understanding of the traditional academic theories, concepts and frameworks of marketing strategy and planning and be able to apply them in the contemporary digital environment. Students will learn the strategic importance of technical change and innovation in the context of information technology and knowledge management. They will also become highly aware of the regulations, legislation, and codes of practice affecting digital marketing and gain the ability to work with others to formulate appropriate and ethical business solutions.

It is anticipated that a high number of students applying for this course will be in full-time employment. Therefore a number of flexible study routes are offered:

Traditional campus based course

The traditional university campus based route of face to face learning will require weekly attendance over the 15 week semester. Teaching takes place during the daytime and would require attendance at the university.

Full-time route (12 months)

This route require you to take three modules over one semester starting in January and finishing in June. You will then have until December to submit your 20,000-word dissertation. International students will need to study full time and complete the whole course in two semesters due to visa requirements.

Part-time route (24 months)

The part time route will enable modules to be taken over two semesters. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until the following December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

Blended route (24 months)

The blended learning route will enable you to study at home for two semesters before progressing to the dissertation. Each semester will include one or two intensive workshops introducing the core subjects, which are then supported extensively by online learning materials, presentations and webinars. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until the following December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.
The workshops will normally take place in February,September, November and January.

Modules

Contemporary Marketing (20 Credits)

This module provides a theoretical look at the world of consumers and their behaviour in the digital environment, drawing on consumer behaviour, product, brand and communications theories to interpret and understand how consumers are respond to different technologies. This module sets out to enable students to learn how to operationalise the key marketing, consumer behaviour and communication theories to enable students to critically appraise the swiftly changing digital marketing channels in the light of marketing theory.

Digital and social media (10 credits)

This module provides an intensely practical education in the core digital technologies, such as websites, search, display media, affiliate networks and mobile. Students will explore how they are being used and can assist in the delivery of marketing goals.

Research methods (20 credits)

This module provides students with the learning, tools and techniques necessary for the completion of their dissertation, the final component for students wishing to obtain a Master's degree in Digital Marketing. Students will learn about the methods and tools of research and develop an understanding of the logic, sequence and structure of a research project, thus enabling students to design a logical structure for their dissertations. The aim of the module is to ensure that students are aware of the vast array of methodologies available to them and facilitating their ability to produce an original piece of work which adds to their existent body of knowledge and will help students explore the sources and types of information required for the research projects and the practical challenges associated with obtaining information.

Teaching and learning

The taught component of the LSBU course provides students with the module Marketing in the Digital Environment, which introduces elements of marketing science, changing consumer behaviour, new media, branding, and the communications process. In addition, the Research Methods module will develop your ability to apply qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques to interpret relevant business data and derive effective and ethical solutions. You will also be given the opportunity, through the dissertation, to develop an individual approach to a research project, enabling you to specialise in a particular area of digital marketing that is of interest to you and your career.

The MSc Digital Marketing is designed to produce graduates with advanced expertise. OVERVIEW

Students will take modules during the first two semesters and produce a thesis (for Thesis Track) or a project report (for Project Track) during the third semester.

Under normal circumstances, the period of candidature is 12 months of full-time study or 24 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course. The maximum period of candidature for both tracks of the MSc Programme is 24 months of full-time study or 36 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course, inclusive of approved leave of absence and medical leave. Leave of absence of up to one year will not be counted towards a candidate’s maximum candidature. Subsequent leave will be considered as part of the candidature.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The graduation requirements for both Thesis Track and Project Track are as follows:

(a) Thesis Track: students are required to complete six core modules and any two elective modules.
(b) Project track: students are required to complete five core modules and any four elective modules.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The Programme is structured to prepare students with applied GIS skills for carrying out research (Research Track) or for addressing industry needs (Project Track). It consists of core compulsory modules that provide trainings in fundamental GIS skills and basic applications, and elective modules that provide insights into specialized GIS applications in fields such as transportation, urban informatics, and environmental management. FEES AND PAYMENT

The tuition fee for AY2016-2017 intake is S$30,000 (inclusive of GST) for the entire programme for all students on the MSc irrespective of nationality. A non-refundable deposit of S$2,000, which counts toward the tuition fee, is due upon acceptance of the admission offer to the programme. Other fees payable follow the prevailing rates set by the University( http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/prospective/grad/coursework/fees.html).

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or faculties/schools.

Course detail

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory thesis. The thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.

Format

The program is typically completed in 24 months and contains rigorous training in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and econometrics, as well as elective courses in a range of applied fields. The program is limited to a small number of students to enhance scholastic achievement through close faculty interaction.

The program comprises two components. The first component is scheduled for the first year and requires students to take a minimum of five courses. The second component is the thesis project which must be completed by the end of the second year. The details of the program components are:

The LLM in Advanced Legislative Studies offers a unique opportunity to drafters, legal officers, policy makers, and those interested in the process of lawmaking and in drafting to study the legislative environment and legislation as a tool for regulation. The programme aims to promote an understanding of the principles of legislative studies, and an in-depth awareness of what constitutes legislative quality and how this can be achieved. The programme is not prescriptive and allows participants to naturalize their knowledge and apply it in their own national environments. Capped class numbers allow individualized tuition. Alumni are usually employed by governments and international organizations.

Legislative drafting is often perceived as a technical skill, which one learns on the job. The view of the Sir William Dale Centre, as eloquently put by its founder and its staff in numerous publications, has always been that legislative drafting is a phronetic discipline requiring awareness of the theoretical principles of drafting along with experience on the job. Legislative drafting has evolved to become the bedrock of political, economic and social transformation. It is still, however, relatively unexplored as an academic discipline. The LLM examines issues related to the policy process, the legislative process, and the drafting process. Legislation is viewed as a tool for regulation. Effectiveness of regulatory aims is the scope and aim of the drafting process.

LLM in Advanced Legislative Studies is also offered via distance learning (DL).

The LLM in ALS via DL includes a compulsory week-long intensive residential course in London. This gives students a chance to meet the tutors and other students, and to start their studies with the maximum level of support.

Teaching methods for the remainder of the course include extensive online materials per session, such as PowerPoint presentations, hand-outs, and a number of academic sources for essential and further reading; online discussions with tutors and fellow students on the traditional LLM and the LLM via DL; private reading and independent research; individual tuition and support via email for coursework and dissertation for which a dissertation supervisor is assigned.

The LLM is divided into two pathways: the Common Law direction and the EU direction.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework, namely by two written essays of 3,500 words each for each of the courses of the LLM. For the two modules students are assessed by one essay of 5,000 words. The pass mark for all examinations and the dissertation will be fifty per cent (50%), the Merit Award will be between 65 and 69% and the mark for Distinction will be seventy per cent (70%), as required by Regulation 10.25 of the Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees.

Mode of study

12 months full-time or 24 months part-time.

Part-time students take four modules in the first year of study, and two modules and the dissertation in the second year of study.

Civil and structural engineering encompasses a range of disciplines, including road, rail and drainage systems, dams, harbours, bridges, buildings and other structures. Civil and structural designers and drafters plan, design, develop and manage construction and repair projects.

This qualification develops your skills and knowledge in the design and drafting of engineering plans to recognised standards. You will learn about different areas of civil engineering, including construction, project management, design and testing. You will also learn about the design and drafting of concrete, steelwork, roads and pipes, as well as hydrology, stormwater drainage and foundations.

While it is essential that those who work in the supervisory or management levels of this discipline have a firm understanding of drafting and planning principles, this qualification goes much further. To be effective on the job, you will need to know how to apply knowledge of fundamental civil and structural engineering concepts, including geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, engineering maths, and properties of materials. Throughout the program this subject matter will be placed into the context of engineering management. Our aim is to ensure that you are an effective, knowledgeable and skilled supervisor or manager, someone who can work beyond a “plan and design” brief to ensure that a project is delivered effectively.

This qualification aims to provide theoretical and practical education and training such that graduates may gain employment at the engineering associate (“paraprofessional”) level within the building and construction industry.

There are eight threads in the course to give you maximum, practical coverage. These threads comprise environmental issues, engineering technologies, drawing, 2D and 3D CAD design, building materials, civil and structural sub-disciplines (roads, steel, concrete, pavement, drainage, soil, water supply, sewerage), construction sites and engineering management.

This program avoids too much emphasis on theory. This is rarely needed in the real world of industry where time is short and immediate results, with hard-hitting and useful know-how, are required as a minimal requirement. The food industry is experiencing a skills gap in technical and product development roles, while also taking a leading role in driving a public health agenda and producing safe, tasty food which meet our nutritional needs.

This course prepares you for technical and product development roles in the food industry with a strong emphasis on nutrition. It is aimed at students with a background in food science, nutrition, health and wellbeing, exercise science or biological sciences who wish to specialise in food and nutrition and acquire an in-depth understanding of how to apply nutrition principles to food product development and production.

You learn about food production and nutrition in an applied setting, developing core technical skills in our state of the art development kitchens, food and nutrition labs and sensory suite. You apply those practical skills to live briefs with commercial applications provided by our industrial partners such as Morrisons and Cranswick plc.

The course is based on three key strands:

  • a food strand in which you learn about food composition, food legislation and regulations and labelling, product development, food quality management and food technology.
  • a nutrition strand in which you learn about how we metabolise food, our nutritional needs and the impact of nutrition on health and diseases throughout the life cycle.

Aberdeen has taught and researched Theology since its inauguration at Kings College in 1495. This programme is an online delivery of Ministry Studies to allow you to study at a pace that suits you and for qualifications which suit your needs. You can study for a PG Cert, PG DIploma, or and MTh which if you study for the Master's degree can be taken over a four year period.

You are taught with 4 one week modules held in September and January each year at Zomba Theological College in Malawi.

Students in Practical Theology explore the interaction between Christian faith and the wider spirituality of contemporary culture, with particular concern for the challenges and opportunities this offers in the context of the life and ministry of the church, both in Scotland and internationally. The department’s strong links to both church and clinical settings, along with the University’s extensive library holdings, make Aberdeen a dynamic and rich context in which to study theology’s capacity to contribute to the transformation of individual lives and Contemporary society.

You’ll be primed to undertake art-historical investigation and a research project on a specific topic of your choice.

Course details

ResM students study research methods in art history and research in the arts and humanities. You’ll also attend individual tutorials with your supervisor and regular research seminars. The programme leads to either a written thesis or one combining critical writing with creative/professional practice. The ResM can be studied either full or part time. Having completed your taught modules in Year 1 (whether full or part time), your following year will involve an agreed tutorial schedule and work plan. You may attend additional training, workshops and research seminars. As a full-time ResM student, you’ll submit your thesis after 18 months (part time, after 24 months) or pay a nominal sum for up to six months additional ‘writing up’ time (part time, 12 months). If you are interested in the development of dance education, a comprehensive understanding of the science underpinning the art form is a must. This innovative programme - the only one of its kind in Scotland - offers just that, giving you the scientific theory and specialist skills that will inspire you to push the frontiers of dance and dance education.

As you study the science relevant to dance performance and education, you will have access to resources at:

Through a multi-disciplinary blend of theory and practice, you will learn to prepare dancers to improve performance, explore the physiological and developmental issues that relate to dance education and training, and develop awareness of changing trends.

The programme is offered as:

  • Master of Science, which can be completed over 12 months (full time) or 24-72 months (part time)
  • Postgraduate diploma, which can be completed over 9 months (full time) or 12-48 months (part time)

Dance Science & Education with teaching pathway to registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS)

Many dance teachers work in school and community contexts, however, it is a legal requirement for any teacher teaching in the Scottish state school system to be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Being registered not only allows an individual to teach but it also provides assurances to employers, parents and children that teachers meet a national standard of teaching.

The MSc Dance Science and Education now has a teaching pathway to registration with the GTCS, which was accredited in June 2015. On successful completion of this degree students are recommended by the University to the GTCS for provisional registration. Upon completion of the required probationary period of teaching graduates from this degree will further register with the GTCS as a teacher with a subject specialism in dance. This is currently the only route to GTCS registration as a teacher for dance specialists qualified to teach learners aged 3-18 years in schools.

The programme is offered as a Master of Science (SCQF level 11) and can be completed over 15 months (full time) or 24 months (part time). It is not available as a Postgraduate diploma.

Additional options may be chosen from courses offered by relevant schools within the University, subject to approval.

On completion of your courses, you may choose to progress to the MSc, which will include the production of an independently researched dissertation.

For the GTCS accredited teaching pathway, there are no optional courses, but there is an additional compulsory course:

  • The Professional Development and Leadership in Dance Teaching (PDLDT)

Whether you are a recent graduate or a mid-career professional, this programme will prepare you for further research, which can be channelled into an academic career or used to advance your performing or educational career. The transferable skills you gain, such as communication and project management, will also be valuable in enhancing any career options.

If you choose the GTCS accredited teaching pathway, this degree will enable you to apply for GTCS registration and teach in schools with a subject specialism of dance across 3-18 years.
