About the course

Clinical Academic Programme -

The academic programme is based on a ‘core competency’ model (BPS, 2007) and comprises four main areas of teaching: Professional Practice and Personal Development; Therapeutic Models and Interventions; Research Methods in Clinical Psychology; and Client Groups and Client Contexts.

Each of these four areas is further divided into a number of specific teaching modules that span the three years of training and correspond as much as possible with the structure and sequence of clinical placements. An awareness of the issues of ethical practice and equality for all is highlighted in all modules. Particular consideration is given to the many ways in which issues relating to diversity and inequality impact on the work of practising clinical psychologists within the lectures, and all lectures are formally evaluated on this by the trainees. Additionally, there are specific lectures considering a wide range of diversity issues within the Clients in Context module taught across the three years.

Four models of psychological therapy are currently taught on the programme: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), systemic and family psychotherapy, personal construct therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. The content of the introductory CBT module is mapped onto the IAPT curriculum to enable trainees to include this in their portfolio of competencies, should they wish to seek employment where this is a specific requirement. More advanced training is provided in the third year of training. A previous trainee recently gained accreditation with the BABCP based on their CBT training at the University of Hertfordshire.

The academic programme is located within the overall programme philosophy which places particular emphasis on incorporating constructivist and social constructionist approaches to conceptualising psychological difficulties and their management. In line with the programme philosophy, an important aim of the academic programme is to train clinical psychologists who can understand and apply a range of psychological theories and approaches to both clinical practice and research. We teach our trainees to draw on multiple theoretical and evidence bases to develop individually tailored assessments, formulations, interventions and evaluations of complex psychological problems. We emphasise the flexibility to adapt and combine different approaches as a key competence, and our curriculum therefore aims to develop a broad, thorough and sophisticated understanding of various psychological theories and therapeutic approaches.

Service User Participation:

The DClinpsych course encourages service user and carers' participation in the training and have established a committee of service users and carers who consult and participate in the training course.

Problem Based learning -

Problem-based learning (PBL) forms an important part of clinical training at the University of Hertfordshire. As part of the academic programme trainees complete a series of small-group based PBL exercises, which aim to promote reflective, collaborative and self-directed learning.

Throughout the three years, trainees also participate in a series of small group discussions to consider academic papers and clinical cases. These discussions provide an academic context for trainees to integrate theory and research, to highlight theory-practice links, and to enable peer review of formulation and intervention plans. More formal case presentations are undertaken in the third year.

A unique feature of our clinical psychology training at UH is the access that our teachers and trainees have to a purpose-built, advanced simulation training centre.

The trainees are regarded as mature students, and for this reason an adult learning model is adopted. In line with this model and the overall programme philosophy, it is recognised that not only do trainees learn in different ways, but also that they can pursue their own perceptions of the material being taught and interpret it for themselves.

In line with HPC requirements for all clinical training programmes, all trainees selected will be informed of the various activities that form part of the academic curriculum (e.g., role-plays, problem-based learning, simulation training, small group discussions, etc). Consent to participate in all aspects of the academic programme will be sought prior to the programme commencing.

Our next intake of Trainees will be at the end of September 2016. Application packs are available from the Clearing House from September 2015, and the deadline for applications is early December 2015.

Each academic year starts at the end of September or beginning of October with a compulsory four-week, full-time introductory block of teaching. This is followed by teaching all day on Thursdays and Fridays during term-time.

Up to two fee-paying places, on our doctoral programme for International, European and British applicants, are available for entry in Autumn 2015. Fee-paying students will follow the same programme of study as trainees with NHS funded places.

Why choose this course?

The course has a particular remit to train clinical psychologists to take up NHS positions. Clinical psychologists working in the region support the course, and many are working in collaboration with the Programme Team to provide placement supervision, research supervision, teaching and skills workshops.
The DClinPsy Trainees attend the University for their lectures, seminars and tutor support, but also spend approximately three days per week on their clinical placements.

In line with the concept of the "scientist-practitioner", the programme of research aims to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills required to undertake high-quality research, appraise literature critically, and adopt an evidence-based approach to clinical practice, where possible. Communication associated with events can then generate a retention rate then times higher than what traditional advertising methods can achieve. As a result, communication spendings on events account for over 7% of overall communication budgets, a figure that has been growing fast lately.

Located in Paris and given entirely in English, this programme will train you to work in the events industry, whether in the organisation or the promotion of events for the general public or for professionals.

- Three 2-week ‘Challenges': groups work on a real-life issue submitted by a company. Projects are Events related in a B2B or B2C context. One Challenge is scheduled right at the start of the programme;

- Two 1-week seminars in Paris & Las Vegas (USA) comprising professional meetings,

It is divided into two phases: Fundamental and Customized. In the 8-month Fundamental Phase, you will acquire the core business skills that are crucial in carving out a successful business career. Two Intakes

Core courses 2:

The courses of Core 2 cover advanced business topics, such as Corporate Finance and Strategic Management, expanding upon the fundamental knowledge you will have learned in Core 1.

Languages:

For those students who are not fluent in French upon arrival, French courses are obligatory during the first 2 terms of the Fundamental Phase. Students who are fluent in both French and English only must study a third language for the first 2 terms. Trilingual candidates may choose to study a fourth language if they wish.

NB. Language classes are organized based on student demand, and so a minimum of 12 students with roughly the same level of knowledge is needed to open a course.

Leadership Development:

Audiology is the clinical science involving the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of hearing loss and associated communication disorders.

UWA's Master of Clinical Audiology course is one of only five university audiology programs offered in Australia. The course provides students with extensive supervised clinical placements in a variety of workplace settings. Employment prospects for Audiologists who graduate from UWA are excellent both within Australia and overseas. Graduates are eligible for full membership of the Audiological Society of Australia.

The Master of Clinical Audiology has an intake every second year, in even years. The next intake of students will commence in January 2016. Applications will open in September 2015.

UWA's Auditory Laboratory has been internationally recognised for more than 30 years for the excellence of its research into the fundamental physiological processes of both normal hearing and hearing impairment.

Audiologists are hearing health care professionals responsible for the assessment and management of individuals with hearing, communication and balance problems. They provide clinical services in hospitals, community health centres, hearing aid clinics, and in some medical practices.

Many audiologists are involved in research, helping to develop new behavioural and electrophysiological test techniques, cochlear implants, hearing aids and hearing health therapies. This course is designed to provide you with specialist knowledge and skills in the area of sexology. You will examine recent research that deals with the biological, psychological and social aspects of human sexuality, and you'll also study various research methods.

You will be provided with a comprehensive background on sexology, an in-depth review of sexual and reproductive health issues, an introduction to forensic sexology, an opportunity to explore sexology from cultural perspectives and training in sexological education.

You will study a variety of counselling models and therapeutic tools as they relate to various areas of sexology, including common sexual issues, difficulties and dysfunctions and their treatments in the context of various populations. Ethics in sexology are also highly prioritised.

You will undertake a supervised placement where you will be able to apply what you have learned in a professional setting. Additionally, you will review your attitudes and values in a sex-positive environment and learn how to effectively undertake your own research and analyse your findings.

Upon graduation, you should be able to integrate this specialisation into your professional discipline, and be conversant in the key aspects of sexology as a public health issue.

Media material of a sexually graphic nature is used in this course.

Professional recognition

Upon graduation, you will be eligible for membership of the Society of Australian Sexologists (SAS), which is a member of the World Association for Sexual Health. You may obtain a specialist title as a Psychosexual Therapist, and/or Sexuality Educator from SAS after completion of supervision requirements. Requirements for such titles in other countries differ.

- Description -

The programme provides multidisciplinary training in a range of neuroscience topics, especially those that are relevant to psychiatry and neurology, through three taught compulsory fundamental modules, one taught specialised module (from a choice of seven) and an approximately 20 week research project. Students choosing a research project in the same subject area as their specialised module may graduate with an MSc Neuroscience in that speciality.

The programme seeks to equip graduates from a wide range of backgrounds for the next stage of their career, which may be either further full-time study in a neuroscience-related academic research environment, or employment in an academic, clinical or pharmaceutical organisation.

- Course purpose -

Neuroscience as a degree subject is still under-represented in the undergraduate sector and, consequently, most students coming onto the programme have degrees in subjects other than neuroscience. The aim of the programme is to extend the students' theoretical knowledge of the neurosciences and to develop, through their chosen research project, the practical skills that they may wish to practise in their future careers. This may be in further full-time study in an academic research environment or employment in an academic, clinical or pharmaceutical organisation.

- Course format and assessment -

Each of the Fundamental modules (A1-A3) is assessed with a written examination and a coursework essay. The Specialised modules are assessed with a written examination and the writing of an abstract to an unseen published paper (presented without the abstract). The research project is assessed by a research report, a laboratory notebook and a poster presentation.

Past students have obtained PhD positions both in the UK and overseas, entered medical school, the pharmaceutical industry, or trained as clinical psychologists; clinicians have obtained clinical research positions.

In recent years, PhD candidates have been encouraged to take an MRes-type qualification prior to commencing their PhDs so as to be able to develop a broad range of qualitative and quantitative research methods as well as starting to develop a more in-depth research proposal before embarking on their PhD - this programme is designed to provide high quality training to potential doctoral students.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

We offer a wide range of postgraduate programmes. Our postgraduate teaching strongly reflects our research and our links to policy-makers and development institutions at the national, European and global level.

Seminar series:
We run a lively and well attended postgraduate research seminar series. Each of the Research Centres run seminar series and conferences associated with their research activities. The University of Bath also has a Research in the World public lecture series where key national and international academics are invited to speak.

We are an internationally-recognised research-intensive department with a strong focus on policy and practice and a commitment to contribute to social wellbeing and social justice.

We draw together academic staff with backgrounds in Social Policy, Sociology, Social Work and International Development and work closely with colleagues in Psychology, Economics, and Health.

- Description -

Provides a theoretical foundation and develops appropriate clinical skills for the care of patients needing special care with particular emphasis on the use of behaviour management techniques, analgesia, sedation and general anaesthesia. It also covers training in research methods and their practical application. You will also undertake a research project. Research focus is on the management of individuals requiring special care and the impact of providing this service for the community.

- Course purpose -

For clinicians working in general practice, community, hospital and/or university departments who wish to become specialists and leaders in this area of dental care. To increase knowledge about dental care for individuals with special needs and the impact of providing this service for the community.

- Course format and assessment -

Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, as follows:

(i) Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of sedation and special care dentistry, assessed by written examination;

(ii) A clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients;

(iii) A research module, involving the submission of a research project including a literature review, with an oral defence of the research.

Career prospects

Graduates have continued their chosen career pathway at senior level posts. Some have combined this with part-time work in the hospital service, academic and teaching posts.
