Make a difference in children's lives in developing countries!

Program description

The International Master of Arts Program in Child Development was established with the goal of improving the lives of children at risk in developing countries around the world by training and promoting professional leadership that will advance various agendas to achieve this objective. The program is offered through the Faculty of Social Sciences in conjunction with the Center for the Study of Child Development and the International School, University of Haifa. Taught in English, the full-time, one-year program is designed to train the next generation of international experts who will focus on pressing questions regarding the nature of child development and how it applies to the lives of children and their families in developing countries.

This unique program equips future professionals with a comprehensive theoretical basis and an applied skillset that will be effective in influencing the well-being of children and their families in a positive manner.

What you will study

The program is made up of courses designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of child development from the vantage point of a number of different disciplines, so as to provide a holistic and encompassing understanding of the field in all its facets. Elements of study include developmental psychology, psychopathology, neuroscience, cognitive and language development, intervention and prevention, methodology and statistics, parenting, and child development in a cross-cultural environment. Workshops in clinical observation are also included.

There are also a series of guest lectures by leading scholars from various disciplines where topics covered have included early child care, child maltreatment; environment and genetics; orphanages, foster care, adoption, traumatic stress, drama therapy, sleep and child development; political violence and child soldiers; and children’s rights.

Faculty

Our broad and experienced faculty staff afford the department with a range of specializations. The department is headed by Professor Avi Sagi-Schwartz who is Professor of Psychology and Child Development, Academic Head of the International MA Program in Child Development, Director of the Center for the Study of Child Development, and former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Haifa. Careers

The program upgrades significantly the status of professionals working with children and families and prepares students for leadership roles in the community, in educational, health and welfare settings, and NGOs. In addition, the program provides skills for conducting child and family assessments, designing prevention and intervention programs and evaluating the quality of ongoing programs.

In cooperation with the University of Neuchâtel, a Master in Sports Law has been created in 2005 with the aim of allowing students to complete and further traditional teaching in legal matters related to sport and to train specialist jurists to deal with the specificities of sport problems. In cooperation with the University of Neuchâtel, a Master in Sports Law has been created in 2005 with the aim of allowing students to complete and further traditional teaching in legal matters related to sport and to train specialist jurists to deal with the specificities of sport problems.

Funding for the teaching of these courses is provided by FIFA.

Lectures are given by specialists of international standing such as Denis Oswald, who is also the CIES Director. The course includes complementary courses in economic law, civil law and health law.

This course is offered solely in French.

Students are to be registered with the University of Neuchâtel to attend classes and apply for the Master exams. Registration is open exclusively at the registration office of the University of Neuchâtel. No registration at CIES.

The second cycle of basic higher education, the Master degree (university 'maîtrise'), corresponds to 90 or 120 ECTS credits (obtained, in theory, over 3 or 4 semesters), and intensifies the scientific understanding of the discipline. Students at this level may also profit from the opportunity to engage in contemporary research.

The Master degree is a prerequisite for doctoral study. On obtaining a Master degree, students may undertake research leading to a PhD from the University of Neuchâtel.

As part of the University’s international General Management programme, the part-time Berlin MBA in Entrepreneurship concentrates on start-up, growth and innovation processes and steering young and small and medium-sized companies. The primary focus is on developing and implementing new ideas to improve competitiveness across all areas of an organisation – irrespective of whether the immediate aim is to launch a new product or strategically restructure an operating division, or even an entire company. The point of reference here also embraces the international context. MBA in European-Asian Management

Global management competences

The Berlin full-time MBA in European-Asian Management prepares for leadership or consulting roles in companies or organisations which operate in a European-Asian context. The pathway European-Asian Management expands the core courses comprising an international general management programme to highlight the key aspects of economic development in Europe and Asia. In this process, the programme provides the specialist business skills and socio-cultural competences needed to successfully undertake executive business tasks in an international context. Lecturers draw on first-hand experience of leadership positions in Asia and Europe.

Special focus will be on patterns of internationalisation strategies and entry strategies on Asian and European markets, identifying key success factors in expanding companies in the worldwide competition. The course considers the role, operation and development of different markets to extend the general knowledge about the international planning cycle and the necessary tools to develop marketing strategies for different target markets.

MBA in Transatlantic Management

Be a part of the global study world

The Berlin full-time MBA in Transatlantic Management prepares for leadership or consulting roles in companies or organisations which operate in a transatlantic context. The pathway course content will focus on general international management issues with a particular focus on transatlantic issues. Students will learn about topics such as the North American Free Trade Agreement and the European Union and their implications for cross-border trade and foreign direct investment.

Certain forms of market entry such as licensing/franchising will receive particular attention. Important variations in business law and corporate governance standards on both sides of the Atlantic will be examined. Differences in business culture and general business practices in American and European companies will be elucidated.

The primary focus is on finding viable and feasible management solutions in real-life situations confronting cross-boarder-aware businesses and organisations.

To realise this goal effectively, business theory is always linked to best practices and placed in an intercultural context – a process that underscores how business activities are located within a social surround where overall economic and social factors play their part.

This programme encourages students to take a risk, to test the boundaries of the discipline and push their design ideas beyond personally predetermined limits.

You will develop an enhanced research and design proposal, culminating in a new body of work that will showcase your development and achievements.

This unique and convention-breaking programme has a strong emphasis on personal creative freedom and design innovation, ensuring you have the best chance of employment and career development upon graduation.

You will be encouraged to challenge your existing research and design knowledge and develop new skills and networks. You are expected to experiment and explore: independent study is paramount but underpinned by a number of supporting projects, workshops and events.

We expect collaboration within the School of Design, with the creative industries and where appropriate with external clients to allow you to realise personal and project possibilities to the full. There is a strong international student input which introduces diverse experience and encourages wide-ranging thinking.

We encourage bold, lateral approaches, coupled with a clear understanding of process and technique, to produce innovative, emotive and enduring design from students who learn through intense, sustained involvement with the design process.

Programme structure

The curriculum is student-led with an emphasis on independent learning. With tutorial guidance, you will negotiate and develop a programme of study based on personal areas of research and practice, alongside set projects to support and inform your line of enquiry.

You will initially focus on the research and development of a study proposal. With support from our dynamic team of experienced tutors (all industry practitioners or researchers) you will be encouraged to expand on your preconceived ideas and let your findings dictate future development. We expect you to engage in sophisticated design dialogue to push your ideas to their full potential. There is a hotbed of debate and prototyping before any designs are taken into production.

The written context of the programme helps amplify and contextualise your understanding of process and this wider awareness of design feeds back into your practice-based work. You will produce written context assignments alongside studio based work.

Typically though our graduates leave to become valuable members of a graphic design agency.

Our extensive links with industry built through industry-led projects and staff research, and our range of visiting speakers, ensures that graduates are aware of the full range of career possibilities and are provided with a strong footing from which to develop their chosen career.

Previous career paths have included experiential design, packaging, advertising, digital design, interaction design, exhibition design, design research, marketing, retail design, exhibition design, multimedia, design management, education. Graduates may freelance or seek employment within a company.

A specific scheme we run within the programme is the Design Agency project which, in 2013, won a Guardian University Award for Employability Initiative.

Design Agency is a flagship initiative that enables graphic design students to form their own design agencies. They create their own brand for the agency and work collectively towards a common objective based on ability, regardless of age or experience. Edinburgh-based design agencies act as ‘mentor partners’ to the student agencies. The long-term relationships that are built with mentors ensures that students have the chance to show, over an extended period rather than just a few weeks on placement, what they can contribute to potential employers.

In 2013, the ECA Design Agency won the Guardian University Awards 2013 prize for Employability Initiative, with the judges praising its ambition and said its risk-taking innovation “should be applauded.”

Our MA Philosophy will provide you with a rigorous grounding in modern and contemporary European philosophy. We have leading expertise in critical theory, phenomenology, German Idealism, nineteenth Century German philosophy, aesthetics, existentialism, contemporary French philosophy, philosophy and psychoanalysis, and medical humanities.

All of our academic staff work on Continental Philosophy, including classical German philosophy (Kant and German Idealism), Frankfurt School Critical Theory (Adorno, Habermas, Honneth), nineteenth-century philosophy (Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche), and phenomenology (Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty). On this pathway you choose from a range of specified topics in these areas, in addition to some outside options and a dissertation on a topic in Continental Philosophy.

MA Philosophy (Critical Social Theory Pathway)
We are the leading centre for Critical Social Theory in the UK with five members of academic staff working on the Frankfurt School (Adorno, Habermas, Honneth), contemporary French thought (Derrida, Foucault, Rancière) and issues in Critical Social Theory, such as activist political theory, theory of recognition, aesthetics and politics, deliberative democracy, and the moral limits of markets. On this pathway you study modules on the Frankfurt School and Contemporary Critical Theory, in addition to some outside options and a dissertation on a topic in Critical Social Theory.

MA Philosophy (Philosophy and Art History Pathway)
Drawing on the collaborative and interdisciplinary approach of the School, our new Philosophy and Art History pathway enables students to get a thorough grounding in philosophical aesthetics. You explore issues in aesthetics and their bearing on other areas of philosophy (such as critical theory or existentialism) and Art History (such as aesthetic practices and curating), and profit from the wide-ranging expertise of our staff in both disciplines. On this pathway you study modules on Philosophy/Aesthetics and Art History (dealing, for example, with Art & Politics, Art, Architecture and Urbanism, or Art, Science & Knowledge), in addition to some outside options and a dissertation on a topic in Philosophy and Art History.

Degree Information

Students gain a solid core of business, project management and team working skills, and are given the opportunity to hone their technical skills. For students who wish to develop their business idea following graduation, assistance is given in making valuable contacts with potential investors, business partners, venture capitalists and clients.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months, part-time two years) is offered to students who are unable to complete the standard 180 credits.
