Graduates of the course are expected to have a broad overview of the field of GIS, to have extensive practical experience of GIS and related software and hardware, and be able to operate at a professional level in GIS employment.

PgDip modules cover issues such as the representation, acquisition, management and manipulation of spatial data, spatial analysis and modelling, remote sensing, GIS in the commercial environment, databases and web programming. Concepts and techniques are illustrated using a variety of applications. Students can take one optional module from a choice of GIS work experience / work-based project, GIS for environmental management, and customising GIS. Students may also opt for an environmental strand of the course.

In addition to acquiring substantial theoretical knowledge of the subject, students gain extensive practical experience using a variety of software, focusing primarily on ArcGIS but also including ERDAS Imagine, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MySQL, OpenLayers, Geoserver, QGIS, Excel, SPSS and a number of GIS extensions and plug-ins. One of the core modules gives students experience of web-based programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, while an optional module in customising GIS applications introduces them to Esri ModelBuilder and the Python programming language.

Assessment is 100% by course work (no sessional examinations); a mixture of methods including practical reports, problem analysis, projects, literature reviews and essays, class tests, group work and a research project.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme is designed to suit current market demands. You will practise specialised translation in language-specific groups and have opportunities to simulate real-life translation scenarios.

The domains covered include economic, business, legal, scientific and technical translation. Our strong emphasis on translation technologies will allow you to work with computer-assisted translation software and state-of-the-art corpus tools and resources.

Equally important, the programme highlights the business requirements of the industry so that you acquire the necessary project management and entrepreneurial skills to work as a professional language service provider.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The MA Translation is studied over one year (full-time mode) or two years (part-time mode). On successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Master’s degree in Translation accredited by the European Masters of Translation.

Language-specific options are paired with English. If you are a native speaker of English, you can take up to two Specialist Translation options. If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally take one Specialist Translation option (your mother tongue paired with English).

You can also choose one ab initio language if you wish to expand your portfolio of translation languages. Options ending in ‘I’ in semester 1 must be taken in conjunction with modules ending in ‘II’ in semester 2.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In addition to enjoying regular contact with professional translators in your practice-based modules, you will benefit from course components that specifically address the business and wider industry aspects of the profession.

Further insights into the industry will be provided by the speakers we invite to our Translation Studies seminars series.

These include professional translators, interpreters, subtitlers and audio describers; professionals working in public services, companies and international organisations; representatives of professional translator/interpreter associations as well as translation/interpreting researchers.

The MA in Interpreting programme is offered in two pathways: a multilingual and a Chinese pathway. Experienced interpreters and academics will guide you through the main principles, specific techniques and professional requirements of interpreting.

The programme pays particular attention to the emerging forms of distance interpreting, which are an increasingly important feature in the professional landscape. We are the first university to teach remote and mobile interpreting based on research findings in this area.

To demonstrate how geo-spatial technologies and techniques (including GIS, scanning and digitisation) play a central role in the recording, analysis, interpretation and management of cultural heritage across a range of scales from excavated items, archaeological sites, and paper records to historic buildings, monuments and their landscapes.

WHY QUEEN'S?

In the new programme the internationally recognised expertise within GAP with regard to the development and application of digitisation and scanning technologies will be more fully used and integrated into the student learning experience.

Teaching is achieved through various combinations of lectures, seminars, practical classes and fieldwork and is supported by intensive self-guided independent learning. All assessment is coursework based and will be individually undertaken. The dissertation submission is an independent piece of research undertaken by each student under the supervision of an academic member of staff. Both formative and summative feedback will be given through, as appropriate, oral and written means. The pass mark for all assessments is 50 per cent. Students must obtain an overall 50 per cent pass mark for this taught programme (five modules) before progression from the PG Diploma to Masters.

Language-specific translation modules cover specialised translation in domains such as business, finance, science, technology and law. The interpreting modules offer intensive language-specific practice in consecutive interpreting (traditional and short) and dialogue interpreting for business and public service contexts.

The practice-based components of the programme, which include valuable simulations of real-life scenarios, are complemented by modules highlighting different aspects of the profession.

You will practise with the latest computer-assisted translation software and use cutting-edge videoconferencing systems for remote interpreting.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

All programmes operate on a 15 credit modular structure over two semesters. All taught modules are semester based and are worth 15 credits, which is indicative of 150 hours of learning, comprised of student contact, private study and assessment.

The MA Translation and Interpreting is studied over one year (full-time mode) or two years (part-time mode). On successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting and can then enter the professional translation and interpreting market.

Language-specific options are paired with English and are subject to demand. If you are a native speaker of English, you can take up to two Specialist Translation or Consecutive and Dialogue Interpreting options (in another language).

If you are not a native speaker of English, you will normally take one Translation option and one Interpreting option (in your mother tongue paired with English).

You can also choose one ab initio language if you wish to expand your portfolio of translation languages. Options ending in ‘I’ in semester 1 must be taken in conjunction with modules ending in ‘II’ in semester 2. Each module provides 15 credits, totalling 120 credits in all.

Experienced academic staff with excellent research records will help you to develop a broad understanding of the current and future challenges of translation and interpreting, while professional translators and interpreters bring their real-world experience and standards, and up-to-date knowledge of the translation and interpreting market into the classroom.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In addition to enjoying regular contact with professional translators and interpreters in your practice-based modules, you will benefit from course components that specifically address the business and wider industry aspects of the profession.

Further insights into the industry will be provided by external guest speakers we invite to our Translation Studies seminars. These include professional translators, interpreters, subtitlers and audio describers; professionals working in public services, companies and international organisations; representatives of professional translator/interpreter associations as well as translation/interpreting researchers.

In line with our aim to offer professionally relevant programmes, we have forged close links with the main professional bodies, i.e. the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL).

You can join these bodies as a student member during the course and then become a full member after graduation.

In addition, we work closely with many professional language service providers and are a member of the European Language Industry Association (ELIA), which gives you the possibility to apply for a work placement with various translation and interpreting companies that are members of ELIA.

Facilities

The Department of Computer Science is well equipped for teaching, and is continually upgrading its laboratories to ensure equipment is up-to-date – equipment is never more than three years old, and rarely more than two. Currently, our Computer Science students use three fully networked laboratories: one, running Windows; another running Linux; and a project laboratory, containing specialised equipment. These laboratories support a wide range of software, including the programming languages Java, C# and the .net framework, C, C++, Haskell and Prolog among many; integrated programme development environments such as Visual Studio and Netbeans; the widely-used Microsoft Office package; web access tools; and many special purpose software tools including graphical rendering and image manipulation tools; expert system production tools; concurrent system modelling tools; World Wide Web authoring tools; and databases.

As part of the expansion of the Department of Computer Science, we are building the Computational Foundry on our Bay Campus for computer science and mathematical science.

Francesca Madeddu, originally from Italy, completed an outstanding Master’s thesis (which earned her a distinction) investigating interaction with augmented reality on mobile devices. More specifically, she investigated how to interact with virtual Egyptian artefacts placed in real scenes. The final game was deployed at Swansea's Egypt Centre last year and was evaluated by volunteers working at the museum. A Master’s thesis does not often lead to a publication. However, part of Francesca's research was written up as an extended abstract and presented at Computer Graphics and Visual Computing (CGVC), a Eurographics UK conference for visual computing last year. Format

The course places great emphasis on hands-on practical skills. There is a computer laboratory allocated solely for the use of MSc students. PCs are preloaded with all the required software and tools. Online students are expected to have a suitable PC or laptop available; all required software is provided for installation to faciliate course work. Online teaching hours, involving lecturers, tutorials and practical demonstrations, usually take place in the morninbg. The rest of the time, you are expected to do exercises, assignments and generally put in the time required to acquire key skills.

Assessment

Continuous assessment is the primary method of examining. In each module, typically 40% of the marks are available for take-home assignments and the remaining 60% of marks are examined by a practical computer-based examination. Final projects are read and examined by at least two members of staff.

FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

As part of their learning experience, students have at their disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the programme material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.

Numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available for those opting for technology-based projects, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robotics facility and signal processing labs.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD programme.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision-support systems alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise.

Graduates of this programme will be well prepared to help technology-intensive organisations make important decisions in view of vast amounts of information by adopting, combining, implementing and executing the right technologies.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme aims to provide a highly vocational education which is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date. It also aims to provide the students with the necessary skills required for a successful career in the process industries.

This is achieved through a balanced curriculum with a core of process systems engineering modules supplemented by a flexible element by way of elective modules that permit students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. The programme draws on the stimulus of the Faculty’s research activities.

The programme provides the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and understanding
-State-of- the-art knowledge in process systems engineering methods, in the areas of: modelling and simulation of process systems, mathematical optimization and decision making, process systems design, supply chain management, process and energy integration, and advanced process control technologies
-Advanced level of understanding in technical topics of preference, in one or more of the following aspects: renewable energy technologies, refinery and petrochemical processes, biomass processing technologies, and knowledge-based systems

Intellectual / cognitive skills
-Select, define and focus upon an issue at an appropriate level
-Collect and digest knowledge and information selectively and independently to support a particular scientific or engineering enquiry
-Develop and apply relevant and sound methodologies for analysing the issue, developing solutions, recommendations and logical conclusions, and for evaluating the results of own or other’s work

Professional practical skills
-Assess the available systems in the process industries
-Design and/or select appropriate system components, and optimise and evaluate system design
-Apply generic systems engineering methods such as modelling, simulation, and optimization to facilitate the assessment and development of advanced process technologies and systems

-Preparation and delivery of communication and presentation

-Research into new areas, particularly in the aspect of literature review and skills acquisition
