Gain the qualification you need to teach in the area of special educational needs in Post-16 and Further Education, previously known as Post-Compulsory Education and Training (PCET), and including 14-19 provision.

It is suitable whether you are new to teaching and need us to find you a placement, or if you are already working as a teacher or trainer within the SEN context and want to become qualified.

The course maps to the national framework for teaching qualifications in Post-16 and Further Education, the new Diploma in Education and Training for Disabled Learners (DET, previously DTLLS). The course is recognised by the professional body, currently the Institute for Learning (IfL) and sector body the Education and Training Foundation (EtF). It enables you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for Post-16 and Further Education, which is equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in schools. QTLS is currently awarded by IfL who charge a fee for membership and QTLS registration. An employer may be willing to pay the fee for you.

On the course, you

  • develop as a teacher in special educational needs
  • develop your knowledge and understanding of educational ideas and theories
  • engage with the latest developments for special educational needs in the Post-16 and Further Education context

You apply the course theory through your teaching practice. This consists of at least 120 hours teaching over either one year or two. During the course, University staff and your placement or workplace mentor assess your teaching practice eight times.

Key areas covered include • planning and preparing to teach • assessment for learning • teaching methods • behaviour for learning • using technology in teaching and learning • progression against the professional standards • understanding your wider professional context.

Settings of Post-16 and Further Education and Training include • further education colleges • school sixth forms • higher education institutions • adult and community learning providers • private training companies • public services • 14-19 educational providers.

After successfully completing the course, you gain a level 7 qualification equivalent to DTLLS or the new Diploma in Education and Training, but at masters level, and you can use these 60 credits towards a masters course.

We have partnerships with a range of settings across the Post-16 and Further Education sector, who provide you with a wide range of placement opportunities.

If you do not have an undergraduate degree or equivalent and need an initial teaching qualification, you can study our CertEd Post-16 Education and Training. This route is not available with the special educational needs specialism.

Your University tutor will carry out a joint observation with your mentor for four of these observations.

Our new and innovative MFA Acting builds on the success of GSA’s current postgraduate programme by extending the high-quality, intensive training currently offered on our one year MA Acting programme. You will experience professional training, delivered to the highest of standards, which immerses you in the very latest teaching and learning pedagogies. The programme aims to develop reflective and analytical skills as well as providing practical experience in planning effective RE lessons and learning strategies.

Hands-on classroom experience, and opportunities to further your own subject knowledge is an integral part of the programme and helps you to develop useful contacts for the future, through meeting and talking with faith practitioners from a variety of world religions.

If you have a degree in Religious Education or a related subject, want to raise cross-cultural awareness and encourage empathy, enquiry and critical thinking in secondary school pupils aged 11 to 16, this is the programme for you.

What will I study?

You will start with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit. This will identify your main strengths and weaknesses, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs.

During 12 weeks of study on campus, you’ll develop:

- Understanding of the role RE can play in promoting inter faith dialogue and community cohesion;
- Knowledge of essential educational and pedagogical theory in RE;

- Excellent working knowledge of the latest ICT tools and software used in schools;
- Greater subject knowledge, reflective professional and academic skills such as research methods and methodologies;
- Wider awareness of your role within the teaching profession through study of professional values;

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, and practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you all the knowledge and skills you need to become a creative and innovative teacher. You will spend 26 weeks on placement in schools, colleges and settings, putting your training into practice through assisting in and taking responsibility for classes, and working alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development. The focus initially is on observation and supporting teaching and learning. Your teaching timetable will increase as your training progresses and you become more confident and competent in the classroom.

You will also develop your subject knowledge and gain useful contacts with religious communities that could help you during your teaching career, by visiting places of worship and meeting faith practitioners from the six main world religions represented in the Local Syllabi.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against academic criteria at Level 7 and the QTS Standards. Various other tasks will enable you to show your competence in ICT and other areas of Religious Education.

Before the end of your PGCE you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

The programme aims to develop reflective and analytical skills as well as providing practical experience in planning effective lessons and learning strategies. Hands-on classroom experience, and opportunities to further your own subject knowledge and introduce you to a wide range of exciting, innovative and interactive methods, including the use of Drama and ICT, to further secondary school students’ understanding and use of English, and their literary knowledge are integral to the programme.

If you have a degree in or featuring English as a substantial component and want to develop the literary knowledge and appreciation of secondary school pupils aged 11 to 16, this is the programme for you.

What will I study?

You will start with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit. This will identify your main strengths and weaknesses, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs.

During 12 weeks of study on campus, you will develop:

- Knowledge of essential educational theory;
- Awareness of appropriate and innovative teaching and assessment methods, including group work, role play and focussed literacy sessions;
- Strategies to encourage students’ understanding and use of English, including using drama, film and ICT;
- Understanding of the curriculum;
- Ability to plan lessons effectively, incorporating lively, interactive techniques to help students develop confidence and self-esteem;
- Excellent working knowledge of the latest ICT tools and software used in schools;
- Greater subject knowledge and professional and academic skills;
- Wider awareness of your role within the teaching profession through study of professional values.

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, presentations and simulations, and practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you all the knowledge and skills you need to become a creative and innovative teacher. The programme aims to develop a reflective and a critically analytical approach to education.

You will spend 26 weeks on placement in schools, colleges and other settings, putting your training into practice through assisting in and taking responsibility for classes, and working alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development. The focus initially is on observation and supporting teaching and learning. Your teaching timetable will increase as your training progresses and you become more confident and competent in the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against academic criteria at Level 7 and the QTS Standards. Various other tasks will enable you to show your competence in ICT and other areas of English.

Before the end of your PGCE you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

The course covers training in a wide variety of teaching techniques with opportunities to try ideas out in the partner schools. This course will equip trainees to teach Science within the 11-16 age range in a variety of schools and colleges (including Welsh medium if requested). The course provides you with training to teach Science i.e. Biology, Chemistry and Physics up to GCSE examinations.

The fundamental aims of the PGCE Science programme are to develop the skills of a trainee Science teacher who is able to reflect on practice gained through teaching experience in school; who can analyse that experience in the light of discussion with mentors and others and also in the light of their reading; and evaluate their practice effectively to demonstrate gradual improvement in the standards of their own teaching and pupils learning.

The PGCE Secondary Science (Chemistry) course consists of a variety of learning experiences designed for those wishing to train as teachers. The majority of the course focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills. This practical training is underpinned by the development of participants knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educational issues and developments. The Secondary course prepares graduates to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE, AS and A2 level. For the purposes of gaining Qualified Teacher Status, trainees focus upon the 11-16 age range. Learning takes place through a number of school and university based elements. There will be extended periods of school experience which will provide opportunities to work in a Primary setting and to teach in at least two different Secondary Schools. A total of approximately 25 weeks during the PGCE will be spent experiencing and working in different types of School.

Our School Direct routes involve joint selection of candidates by Schools and University tutors. When choosing a School Direct route, applicants should identify the particular arrangement that the School Direct Lead School has made for delivery of School Direct with the University of Manchester as these will involve different patterns of training. Applicants should also clarify the 'expectations' to employ by the Lead School.
