Who is it for?

This programme is for students who wish to develop their knowledge and skills as a professional researcher in academia, private or public sectors. It is suitable for those seeking to undertake foundational training for doctoral level research, as well as those planning to work in an environment where they might need to commission, undertake, or otherwise critically engage with empirical social research.

Students will typically have a first degree in an arts or social sciences subject. Some students come to us with prior experience of conducting empirical research, or using it, while some are new to the field – the programme thrives on the diversity of experiences and interests of its students.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to boost your understanding, appreciation and practice of qualitative and quantitative research methods. It is taught by academics in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, so whatever your academic or professional background, you will achieve a broad perspective on the production and consumption of empirical research across a range of disciplines. At the same time, you will be able to pursue your own subject specialism through elective module choices and by conducting your own original research for your dissertation.

In the course we aim to equip you with an overview of key issues in research design and philosophical foundations of social research. We offer several modules in applied quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. These equip you with a set of practical skills to enable you to conduct and critically read research using these methods, and provide a firm foundation from which you can pursue further specialist training.

Academic facilities

You will have the opportunity to learn a range of statistical software applications to aid data collection and analysis, such as SPSS, Stata, MatLab and R.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is delivered predominantly by lecturers and other academic staff across the School. You will experience a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and computer lab sessions. You will be expected to read in preparation for classes, and to participate in discussions, group work, presentations and other practical activities. You will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning and to engage in independent study. You will be guided by reading lists for each module, and teaching materials will be made available via the virtual learning environment Moodle. The dissertation is a major part of your MSc work, for which you will receive individual supervision.

Assessment is by means of coursework (written assignments, essays or reports), class tests, presentations, unseen written examinations, and the dissertation. The particular assessment details vary according to the module being studied. Your overall degree result is based on your performance in the taught modules and the dissertation.

Modules

The course consists of taught modules from interdisciplinary core subjects, plus department-specific elective modules, and a research dissertation.

In full-time study you will typically take four 15-credit modules in Term 1 and four in Term 2. The balance of teaching between the terms may vary according to your module choice. Most modules are worth 15 credits each, with a few elective modules worth 30 credits. Your dissertation is worth 60 credits.

As a general guide, a 15-credit module delivered over ten weeks of teaching will typically comprise an hour-long lecture and an hour-long seminar or workshop each week. We would notionally expect you to spend 150 hours in independent study for each 15-credit module (this time includes time spent reading, working through exercises, preparing for examinations, writing coursework, using online resources, navigating Library resources, and so on.)

Core modules - you will take six core modules alongside your dissertation. Your taught core modules will be as below:

This programme teaches students the skills required to manage a software project by producing criteria to monitor the project's progress and measure outcomes. Students learn how to formulate requirements for a business system and are given an underpinning in the nature of software development and its inherent complexity. The programme also covers system modelling and user interface and database design. Students learn to develop a system from determining its requirements and graphic user interface to database implementation.

This programme is of particular interest to those with a first degree in business or with business experience. Academic facilities

Our specialist Clinical Skills Centre at our Northampton Square Campus has been designed to give students a safe environment in which to practise their clinical and caring skills.

We have a range of specialist equipment that is used to simulate birthing situations from normal to emergency, to enable you to develop the skills you need no-matter the birthing situation you are supporting.

You will have access to a simulated six-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment; laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow students to rehearse their skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and women’s homes.

Teaching and learning

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including institution-based taught modules, e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. Students will learn in large and small multidisciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning.

A variety of assessment methods are used to assess the course learning outcomes. The choice of assessment method will be influenced by the focus and learning outcomes of the modules. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Modules

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

Students undertake 6 core, compulsory modules (including a dissertation module where you focus upon a topic area of your own choosing) and choose a further two elective taught modules. Alternatively students can take modules from this Masters degree as standalone CPPD (Continuing Personal and Professional Development) courses. In this case, course costs might vary. The Graduate Entry LLB (Hons) is a senior status law degree which allows non-law graduates to achieve an LLB law degree in just two years rather than the usual three.

Who is it for?

This course is for graduates who have a proven academic track record who wish to gain a qualification in law either for legal professional purposes or to advance their careers in law related fields.

For students who intend to practise in law in the UK, the GE LLB Programme offers graduates the possibility of obtaining exemption from the academic stage of training over two years instead of the one year Graduate Diploma. Not only does this give students the chance to take electives in legal subjects but also gives them the chance to acquire work experience in the summer vacation.

The course attracts many international students, particularly Canadians who, once they graduate, are well on the way to satisfying the Canadian NCA requirements.

Objectives

The Graduate Entry LLB (Hons) is a senior status law degree which allows non-law graduates to achieve an LLB law degree in just two years rather than the usual three.

You will have the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge in the core legal subjects as well as learning about more specialist areas of law. There is also the option of participating in mooting competitions to further strengthen legal and debating skills. Successful completion of this course qualifies you to progress to one of the two professional courses all UK lawyers are required to take the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for solicitors and the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) for barristers.

Teaching and learning

Students on the programme are taught in a separate cohort of Graduate Entry LLB students for the core subjects and together with the LLB third year students for electives.

Instruction in the use of legal materials, legal writing, mooting and in legal research (including use of electronic retrieval systems) is an integral part of the course. Students can choose at least three subjects in their second year from an extensive list of interesting elective courses. Tuition fees include textbooks in all of the seven core subjects.

Students have a wide range of extra-curricular activities to engage in such as mooting and client interviewing. The Law School also has an extensive pro bono programme with a Pro Bono Fair at the beginning of the year to inform students of what is available.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of written examination and coursework. Students have the opportunity in the second year to write a dissertation on a legal topic of their choice of 15,000 words instead of a taught elective.

You may choose to complete a dissertation in place of one of these electives. The range of elective subjects offered in any one year is subject to availability and demand.

Career prospects

Most students graduating from the programme take the next steps towards qualification as a practising lawyer. In the UK, that entails taking either the Legal Practice Course to qualify as a solicitor or taking the Bar Professional Training Course to become a barrister.

For students who return to Canada to practise, that will require taking the examinations set by the National Committee on Accreditation to obtain a Certificate of Qualification.

Some students will enrol for an LLM programme, normally at an institution in the UK, and in the past students graduating from the programme have taken LLMs at the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, KCL and LSE.

Students have also taken LLM programmes in Canada, which will also satisfy the requirements of the NCA. In the past a few students have taken an LLM in the US in order to be eligible then to take the New York Bar examinations. Students who have not wished to practise have entered careers in financial services, banking, with NGOs and in the civil service.
