Skills are developed through creating a broader understanding of financial firm risk-taking, accountability, governance.

The emphasis is on a deep analysis of mainstream and critical authorship. We will challenge current and past thinking on the role of financial institutions and markets. The programme particularly encourages students to examine regulatory structures and concepts in the context of recent and past financial crises.

Students will build the skills and knowledge needed to gain an understanding of financial reform processes and their consequences for markets around the world. The practical and quantitative skills that you will develop on the programme will equip you to meet this challenge.

Our compulsory modules provide a firm grounding in probability theory, stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing, quantitative and numerical methods, structuring products, volatility analysis, and the modelling of credit, equity, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives. We also provide a thorough training in C++ and other programming tools.

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Careers in International Shipping and Finance

After completion of the programme you will be well equipped with the knowledge for a successful career in the shipping/ transportation industries, as well as in the wider finance sector.

On average more than 90% of our graduates are in work or further education 6 months after graduation.

Indicative career paths for our graduates are ship-owning and transportation companies, ship-broking/chartering firms, shipping divisions of investment banks, shipping analysis/consulting firms, ship-finance arrangers, port operators, and shipping-related investment funds, among others. The wide curriculum of the programme will also enable you to consider careers in the global investment banking and securities markets.

Internships/Placements

Internship opportunities with leading companies in the shipping industry are available to outstanding MSc ISF graduates. A number of companies have joined our work placement scheme and offer work experience placements to some of our excellent graduates (subject to successful interviews and work permits where applicable). Additional placement and full time opportunities in the shipping industry are also made available to our students on an ad-hoc basis .

Professional Accreditation

Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) Professional Qualification

The programme is accredited by ICS and our students are eligible for 3 exam exemptions from the ICS qualification, which is the maximum number of exemptions offered by the institute. The 3 exemptions offered are for the ICS modules:

  • Introduction to Shipping
  • Economics of Sea Transport and International Trade
  • Shipping Finance

Our successful graduates have to take only 4 out of the 7 ICS exams to qualify for the ICS membership. 

ICMA Fixed Income Certificate

To obtain the requisite knowledge to pass the rigorous FIC exam, students are required to take the ICMA Centre Fixed Income Cash and Derivatives Markets module at Part 2. In order to receive the FIC certificate, students will need to register and pass the FIC exam through ICMA.

This degree programme prepares students for entry into the fast growing and exciting investment industry. It provides a practical knowledge of portfolio management and quantitative finance, together with an applied set of courses looking at industry structure and trends. Students benefit from professional guest speakers drawn from the heart of the global investment industry in the City of London, only a short distance away.

During the course you will develop expertise in a range of specialised areas such as trading strategies, portfolio and fund management, alternative and responsible investments, ethics in investment management and risk management, among others. You will also have the opportunity to apply this knowledge in practice through the use of simulations, case studies and take part in the portfolio management challenge designed for MSc Investment Management students. 

Integral to the academic course is the parallel study of the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA® ) programme, level 1. The two programmes support and reinforce the other, ensuring that graduates acquire both the academic and professional knowledge and qualifications required to succeed in the investment management industry. 

The tuition for this programme includes the candidate’s registration in the June CFA Level I exam that is written just after the end of the academic year. The tuition also includes substantial CFA teaching outside of the academic teaching.

The ICMA Centre is a CFA University Affiliate; this is in recognition that this degree covers at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge, the CFA Institute Ethical and Professional Standards, and other requirements.

After completion, our graduates are qualified to work in a variety of investment functions, including as portfolio managers, hedge fund managers and traders, within a diverse range of organisations such as investment banks, regulators, fund management firms and consultants.

The wide recognition of the programme contributes to the majority of our graduates securing employment offers within 6 months of graduation.

The ICMA Centre is a Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI) 

Centre of Excellence. Centres of Excellence are a select group of UK universities, recognised by the CISI as offering leadership in academic education on financial markets. Students who are on a financially-related masters course recognised by the CISI are eligible for exemptions and membership. 

ICMA Centre students who register and successfully complete two CISI Diploma in Capital Markets modules (Securities and Bonds & Fixed Interest Markets) are eligible for an exemption from the third module (Financial Markets).

Introduction

This is an intensive one year (12 month) or 27 month part-time course. You already have a degree in another subject but want to ‘convert’ to Psychology. This may be because you have noticed in work that a scientific psychology degree would help you, or because you are seeking a career change or a new intellectual challenge potentially progressing to PhD or MPhil studies. The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and gives you BPS Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership which is of interest both to national and international students wanting to practise as a psychologist or health professional.

Accreditation

This course is accredited as conferring eligibility for Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society. This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Delivery and assessment

Teaching is delivered using a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and practical classes, practical placement, and one-to-one research supervision. Lectures are typically taken together with honours students, while small group specialist classes are generally taken with first-year PhD students or other postgraduate students (for example, in modules from other MSc courses).
Both taught and research postgraduates are integral to our research community and are expected to participate in our regular research discussion meetings and seminars. All students are provided with appropriate office space and equipment. In addition, each student is associated with an academic from Psychology.
The individual modules contribute towards 60 percent of the MSc grade, with the research dissertation contributing the remaining 40 percent.

The impetus for the MSc Global Healthcare Management programme stems from recognition, nationally and internationally, of the need to build leadership and management capabilities for those wishing to pursue careers within health care, social care and third sector organisations. Its rationale stems from the recognition, nationally and globally of the unique challenges and complexities that face the next generation of managers and leaders of health and social care systems across the world and the need to build leadership capability.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management programme has been carefully designed, drawing on the expertise of health, social care and leadership and management from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health to enhance students’ personal/professional attributes, abilities to think creatively and apply entrepreneurial skills, in leading the delivery of quality health and social care services and responding to the global health challenges now and in the future. Interdisiciplinary learning is a feature of the programme with students studying alongside their peers on other MSc programmes delivered within the faculty.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with an external organisation or, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process. The host organisation may include the University.

Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

Opportunities for professional experience - a period of professional experience either as an internship with a host organisation or campus-based professional experience for students on the full-time Extended Masters (20 month) programme or voluntary work placements in a range of settings for students on the full-time Masters (12 month) programme

Learning and teaching will be facilitated by a team of highly qualified and academic staff from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health who have relevant subject expertise in business, health and social care and management and leadership
Interprofessional learning across a range of modules, in which students will learn alongside their peers on other health and social care related MSc programmes in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

As part of the programme, students will complete the Global Professional Development module which has been developed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) affording students who meet the CMI evidence requirements a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. Successful completion of the module will also enable students to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of modules which provide a detailed understanding of leadership and management combined with examination of contemporary and global challenges within healthcare management.

The course will feature a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The programme will also develop students’ entrepreneurial skills and offer support with seeking employment opportunities.

Specifically, the modules of study for all students are:

-Globalisation and Health
-Leadership, Service Improvement and Integrated Care

-Research, Methodology, Design and Methods

In addition, those students on the MSc Global Healthcare Management will undertake two non credit bearing modules, providing a substantive period of professional experience, either as an internship with a host organisation, which can include the university, or a campus-based professional experience.

Understanding gained from these modules will be demonstrated and applied in either the university-based Management Project (General) for those students on the full-time (12 month) and part-time (24 month) programmes or the Postgraduate Professional Experience Project for those students on the full-time (20 month programme).

You will experience learning with students from other Masters programmes within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, in addition to those specialising in Global Healthcare Management at different stages of your course.

You will be supported by a personal tutor throughout your studies and receive individual supervision whilst undertaking either the Management Project (General) or Postgraduate Internship Research Project.

Earning an MSc in Global Healthcare Management is an excellent way to build leadership and management capabilities for those wishing to pursue careers within health care, social care and third sector organisations.

The learning and development demanded by this qualification seeks to prepare its graduates for the prospects of senior level employment; be it related to a discrete service department or hospital unit, private or publically funded hospital or service or healthcare company. It encourages students to develop the skill set for posts in local, regional, national or even international government policy making bodies (for example Professional Bodies, Ministries of Health, World Health Organization).

Opportunities within health related industries e.g. the pharmaceutical industry may also be relevant for some graduates.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. The professional experience modules are not available to students undertaking the part-time programme.

Students enrolled onto the 12 month full-time programme, who wish to undertake voluntary work placements with relevant organisations can do so, facilitated by the Faculty’s Employability and Placement Unit. These provide opportunities for you to apply your knowledge and develop your management skills in the work place. These opportunities are usually available to students in the second half of the course.

Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of modules which provide a detailed understanding of business management combined with examination of contemporary challenges within healthcare management.

The course will feature a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The programme will also develop students’ employability and entrepreneurial skills.

Specifically, the modules of study are:
-Leading Complex Healthcare Systems
-Leadership, Service Improvement and Integrated Care
-Human Resource Management
-Financial Analysis and Decision-Making
-Principles of Marketing
-Strategic Analysis
-Research Methodology, Design and Methods

Additionally, the understanding gained from these modules will be demonstrated and applied in either the university-based MBA Management Project (12 month full-time and 24 month part-time) or the MBA Postgraduate Internship Research Project undertaken with an host organisation or MBA Postgraduate Consultancy Project (18 month full-time).

You will experience learning with students from other MBA programmes within the Coventry Business School and Masters programmes within the School of Health, in addition to those specialising in healthcare management at different stages of your course.

You will be supported by a personal tutor throughout your studies and receive individual supervision whilst undertaking either the MBA Management Project or MBA Postgraduate Internship Research Project.

Graduates from this programme enter challenging and rewarding positions which come with great personal and financial rewards. Earning an MBA in Healthcare Management is an excellent way to propel your management career to higher levels in the worlds of health and social care.

The learning and development demanded by this qualification prepares its graduates well for the prospects of director level employment; be it related to a discrete service department or hospital unit, private or publically funded hospital or service or healthcare company. It enables students to develop the skill set for posts in local, regional, national or even international government policy making bodies (for example Professional Bodies, Ministries of Health, World Health Organization).

Opportunities within health related industries e.g. the pharmaceutical industry will also be relevant for some graduates.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

The professional experience modules are not available to students undertaking the part-time programme.

Students enrolled onto the 12 month full-time programme will be offered the opportunity to undertake voluntary work with relevant organisations which will enable you to apply your knowledge and develop your management skills. This will be offered in the second half of your course.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

In addition to studying in the UK with other international students, you will be able to share your personal and professional experiences of health and social care systems to inform seminar discussions and provide a global perspective. You will have the opportunity to focus your MBA Management project on an international issue.
