Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) Grants to Support Knowledge Exchange

Written by James Tippett

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) was officially recognised by the UK's Privy Council on 26 June 2002, created from the merger of The Institute of Materials (IOM) and The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM).

The Institute intends to be the leading international professional body for the advancement of materials, minerals and mining to governments, industry, academia, the public and the professionals.

These grants are designed to support students in attending international conferences, participating in field trips, or engaging with exchange programmes for overseas learning and/or research in the field.

Scholarship details

  • Three research grants of up to £3,000, and eight smaller travel awards of up to £500, are given each year
  • The grant is funded by the IOM3 Education & Outreach Trust
  • It aims to develop interest, recognise excellence and support professional development across all areas of the materials cycle
  • The grant can be used for attending international conferences, participating in a field trip to enrich your research or learning, or taking part in an exchange typically in another country

Eligibility

  • The programme is open to IOM3 undergraduate and postgraduate students and associate members (for a minimum of 12 months prior to application)
  • Applicants must be working or studying in the materials, minerals and mining sector
  • Applicants may only apply once at each stage of their education
  • Preference will be given to those applying for the first time

Applications

  • You must apply through the IOM3 website
  • Applicants are required to write and submit a statement explaining why you should be considered for a grant
  • This should be accompanied by a supporting statement from a tutor/supervisor

You can find full details on what your statement should include on the Grants to Support Knowledge application page.
