Funding a Masters Abroad in 2017

Considering international study for your Masters, but looking for ways to fund it?

Then look no further!

Here at FindAMasters, we’ve put together detailed guides to some of the funding opportunities you can take advantage of when studying abroad.

Whether you’re a UK student looking to study overseas, or an international student looking to study in the UK, we’ve got something for you.

This blog provides a brief introduction to some of the funding guides we offer on our site – more information is only a click away!

Erasmus funding – for students to study a Masters almost anywhere!

The Erasmus programme is an initiative that was set up in 1987 as Europe’s main student funding and exchange enterprise.

It supports study mobility and academic exchange within the EU and select partner countries.

Although the locations in which you can study are restricted, some Erasmus opportunities are open to students of any nationality.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degrees

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degrees (or EMJMDs for short) are degrees offered between universities in different countries.

You will study in at least two different countries for the duration of your Masters – which is usually two years.

The programmes are like any other Masters degree, offering pre-set study packages. All you have to do is fine the one you like, and apply!

You can find the current list of available programmes on the European Commission website.

These programmes offer funded placements in the form of a scholarship, a maintenance allowance, and a travel grant.

The amount you are entitled to depends on your nationality and the expenses involved when travelling to different host institutions.

You can find out more about allowances and eligibility in our guide.

Erasmus+ Masters Loans

Masters loans are available for up to €12,000 for a one-year course, and up to €18,000 for a two-year course.

You don’t have to borrow the full amount if you don’t want to.

While other student loans are offered by a country’s government, the Erasmus+ Loans are offered by banks.

Currently, banks in Spain, France, Turkey and the UK plus one university in Luxembourg are offering these loans – so there’s slightly more restriction on your study destinations.

Students from Spain, France and the UK can receive a loan to study within other Erasmus Programme countries.

Alternatively, students from other Programme Countries can receive loans to study in either Spain, France or the UK.

Meanwhile in Turkey, loans are only offered to outgoing students, while in Luxembourg loans are only available to incoming students.

For more information, read our guide.

Erasmus+ Masters Mobility Grants

Unlike the Masters Loans and the EMJMD scholarships, Mobility Grants do not fund students to complete full Masters degree programmes.

Instead, they offer funding to students wishing to study abroad for shorter periods - and the opportunity to earn credits towards an existing course.

Placements take the form of either a study placement or a traineeship.

They usually last for between 2 and 12 months, and can take place in any Erasmus Programme Country or Partner Country.

The funding amount you are entitled to depends on the institution you wish to study at and the programme they offer.

To apply, you must currently be enrolled on a Masters degree. Applications are normally dealt with by your institution’s international office.

You can read our guide to find out more about how the Mobility Grants are organised.
