MSc by Research in Geographical Information Science & Society |
| MASTERS IN GIS & SOCIETY This degree is based on a modified delivery format of the MSc in Geographical Information Science and will provide students with an in-depth specialist training in geographical analysis and geographical information technologies relevant to the social sciences and human geography. GIS is now integrated in a diverse range of industries, such as health care, transport, education and policing. Interest in 'Space' is rising amongst social scientists with economists, anthropologists and public health practitioners amongst many that are increasingly recognising the possibilities of GIS. The programme has been designed to provide students with relevant knowledge on how GIS can influence power relations and decision-making processes related to society. UNIQUE FEATURES The Edinburgh GIS programme has a number of unique features: • Extensive experience as the first programme of its type in the world, established in 1985 • Flexibility of choice, allowing the programme to be tailored to your particular requirements • Proven track-record of graduate employment • Overseas students can work in Scotland for up to two years after graduation under the Fresh Talent Scheme • Strong links with industry through close staff contacts with individual companies, local and national government, together with the Association for Geographic Information and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors • Annual student prizes generously sponsored by Informed Solutions • Unique professional seminar series, run jointly by the Edinburgh Earth Observatory and AGI-Scotland, which connects students with GI professionals from across Scotland • Extensive graduate network, with hundreds of graduates working in key positions worldwide • Annual graduate conference - GIS Update • Critical mass of highly committed staff • Enjoy studying in a University established in 1582, located in the centre of one of the most spectacular cities in the World, with its annual international festival PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES The MSc programme in Geographic Information Science & Society aims to provide an educational opportunity designed to equip students for either a career in the Geographical Information industry or for further research. The MSc GIS & Society is a one-year intensive programme, which marries geographic information theory with the development of strong practical skills. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE Teaching is based around four blocks, each lasting five weeks. Students attend an induction week in September and a weekend of Field Work in October. Work on the dissertation commences in block four and continues over the summer. Students undertake a number of key compulsory courses and choose their remaining courses from a wide range of options within the university. The base courses deal with the principle components of the GIS process, such as GIS and Society, Data Models and Spatial Analysis. Supporting option courses cover areas such as Software Engineering, Spatial Algorithms and Environmental Modelling. We also encourage students to take courses in other fields, such as Human Geography, and Environment, Culture and Society. APPLICATIONS There is no deadline for applications, although the programme is in great demand and we therefore encourage candidates to apply prior to the summer.
