MSc Digital Media

Applicants are likely to have a 2:2 honours degree in a computing subject, or an arts subject that contains a significant element of IT based work.

The course is designed for graduates who have some computing background (although not necessarily a computing degree) and who wish to extend their understanding and skills into the multimedia or entertainment industries.

The programme considers theoretical, practical and technical aspects of technology in media production, incorporating Computer Graphics Techniques and Applications, Digital Audio, Multimedia Asset Production, and Digital Media Software Integration.

In order to foster a professional attitude, there are also core units on Website Design for Interactive Environments, Project Management and Research and Communication Techniques. These latter units prepare a student for employment in a business environment, and not just for a technical role.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The MSc in Digital Media includes seven compulsory taught units:

* Computer Graphics Techniques and Applications
* Digital Audio
* Digital Media Software Integration
* Website Design for Interactive Environments
* Multimedia Asset Production
* Project Management
* Research and Communication Techniques

You will undertake a substantial project where you will apply the skills and knowledge from the taught part of the course to a practical problem, usually supplied by local businesses or other external clients. In addition to the compulsory core units, there will be the opportunity to choose a further two optional specialist units from fields such as: Artificial Intelligence, Human Computer Interaction and Ergonomics or Training Applications with Knowledge Media.

WHEN AND HOW?

The full-time course runs from October to September, and consists of a taught programme of two semesters from October to June and the Project, which is undertaken in the summer period from June to September.

The course is made up of units to a total of 180 CATS (Credit Accumulation and Transfer) points. The taught element consists of 120 credits taught in units rated at 15 credits each, and the Project unit rated at 60 credits.

IS THIS THE RIGHT COURSE FOR ME?

The MSc in Digital Media is designed for graduates who have some computing background but not necessarily a computing degree. Arts student may wish to develop the computing experience and technical skills that they gained during an Undergraduate Animation or Media Studies degree, and hence develop their creative range. Alternatively, students with a Computing, Software Engineering or Entertainment Technology background, would benefit from enhancing their technical skills with a thorough understanding of the business environment and creative opportunities that technology provides.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY IT AT PORTSMOUTH?

The Computing and Mathematics Programme Area has a long and distinguished record of teaching and research. Within the Programme Area you will have close contact with academic staff from a number of departments, including Creative Technologies, and Information Systems and Computer Applications. This will allow you access to a wide range of state-of-the-art laboratory and computing facilities, including a new large-scale virtual reality visualisation suite, the latest development software and a newly refurbished library.

In addition to our academic facilities, the University of Portsmouth has a newly constructed Students' Union building and a large number of clubs and societies.

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

Graduates with an MSc in Digital Media will be equipped to seek employment in the fields of interactive web design, asset management, multimedia project management, training applications development, or media production

TEACHING & ASSESMENT

Students will encounter a range of types of assessment depending on the content and nature of the unit, and will almost certainly include: Coursework; Supervised Work Sessions (either of which may be individual or group work); Learning Journals; Examinations and at least one Presentation.
