Habitat Restoration and Conservation: Managing the Environment MSc

The face of environmental management is changing and we recognise the demands that will be placed on you – tomorrow’s environmental manager. To prepare you for these challenges we have designed an MSc programme with a core of key management skills which you then tailor to your own needs and interests by following a specialist pathway in Habitat Restoration and Conservation.

The Habitat Restoration and Conservation pathway allows you to specialise in this key area of environmental management. This will involve field based case studies where you will interact with consultants and environmental professional followed by a dissertation in this specialist area of environmental management. The pathway also offers the option of a three month placement in Swedish Lapland, in collaboration with Umea University (for location and related research activities see http://www.ans.kiruna.se/ans.htm).

This MSc programme combines vocational and professional training in Habitat Restoration and Conservation including state-of–the-art technological advances. It delivers an innovative, fully integrated programme, at the cutting edge of the subject. You will acquire the practical skills, field experience and knowledge necessary for a career in Habitat Restoration and Conservation. This is a skills-based course taught over one calendar year comprising both core and pathway-specific modules. IBERS (Aberystwyth University)

The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is a world class research and education centre at Aberystwyth University. IBERS is an internationally recognised centre of excellence and students' choice for the study of biological, environmental and rural sciences.

IBERS is a new venture that has brought together staff from the Institutes of Rural Sciences and Biological Sciences at Aberystwyth University, and the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER). Around 300 research, teaching and support staff conduct basic, strategic and applied research in biology from the level of genes and other molecules to the impact of climate change and bio-energy on sustainable agriculture and land use.

Teaching
• We scored 23/24 in the last Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) in the Biological Sciences reflecting our commitment to high quality teaching.

Research
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise in 2008 we were joint 6th out of 30 in the UK.
• 95% of IBERS research submitted was rated as being recognised internationally
• 45% of IBERS was considered world leading or internationally excellent.
