Student Profile

Yoshimichi Suematsu

"I first visited Canterbury about 20 years ago as a tourist just for one day, and enjoyed looking at the cathedral and other medieval and Tudor buildings. When I was given a year's leave from my job in 2001-2, I decided to study for MA in the University of Kent in the medieval atmosphere of Canterbury. I had sympathetic and knowledgeable lecturers, and spent a very fruitful and pleasant year. So, when I decided to take an early semi-retirement this time, I wanted to study in Canterbury again. With the cathedral, medieval friaries, parish churches, hospitals for pilgrims and many other splendid old buildings, the city offers abundant stimuli for students of medieval and early modern culture, and the cathedral library gives us a lot of opportunities and materials to study rare manuscripts and early modern books. I highly recommend MEMS to foreign students interested in medieval and early modern England."
