Aims of the course
This programme offers a professional training to qualify as a social worker and the opportunity to study for a Masters degree. The qualification is designed to emphasise the development of skills in analysis and assessment, build the confidence to apply knowledge to practice, and increase practitioners' ability to create opportunities for users, and to work collaboratively with other professions.

The award has been designed in partnership with key stakeholders representing employers and service users who will play an important role in the ongoing development of the course. An important aspect of the programme is its inter-professional curriculum, designed alongside Community Health professionals to reflect practice, and informed by service users' and carers' experiences.

This University has many years of experience in offering postgraduate courses in Social Work, and has been accredited by the General Social Care Council (GSCC) as an approved institution to offer this award.

Course contents
The primary focus is on the development of practice skills, informed by up-to-date research, theories, policies and legislation.

The course includes:

Knowledge of: social work theory; human growth and development; mental health and disability; communication and assessment processes; and law
Research and theory relevant for practice - in the final year you will be required to undertake a piece of sustained independent study through a dissertation

Assessment
Assessment will involve essays; presentations; video and project work; examinations and work based practice assessment. A key aspect is acquisition of the necessary practice skills in a diverse range of practice settings relevant to social work. You will undertake supervised practice within at least two different practice settings over a minimum of 200 days during the course. Your previous learning and experience may exempt you from some modules, but not any part of the 200 days assessed practice.

Careers
You will have qualifying status to practice social work (subject to the requirements of registration with the GSCC) and be eligible to become a member of the British Association of Social Workers. Further study opportunities are available through a number of post-qualifying and MA/MSc courses (for example, in practice teaching, childcare and management).
