This Masters course aims to give you advanced training in the application of specific techniques in both GIS and remote sensing across a range of environments and within the framework of contemporary national and international research projects. Whilst vocational skills are conveyed, emphasis is placed also on increasing your knowledge of theory and concepts and their relevance to specific applications.

Following completion of the course, the training received in both vocational and research skills will place you in a position to undertake further postgraduate (PhD) study or seek employment in business, government or nongovernmental organizations, particularly those with specialization in remote sensing and/or GIS. The work experience module in Semester 2 will also expose you to an industry or government- based work environment.

The dissertation in semester 3 will allow you to conduct independent research whilst enhancing your knowledge and skills in a chosen area of GIS and/or remote sensing. A wide range of research projects are available to you in fields ranging from forestry and land use change to archaeology and glaciology. Data from a diverse range of sources (e.g., airborne/spaceborne sensors) is available to support your research, and projects overseas are actively encouraged.

The research in GIS and remote sensing undertaken within IGES is recognized internationally and the courses are updated routinely to ensure that new advances in these fields are conveyed. The most recent remote sensing and GIS software are available and, from December 2005, the Institute of Geography and Earth Science became a Centre of Excellence for the use of eCognition image processing software for environmental applications. Dedicated computing facilities, including specialized equipment (e.g. photogrammetric workstations) are available.
