AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This one-year course is designed to provide students with specialist training in all aspects of applied geophysics from acquisition through processing to interpretation, from the basic physical principles through practical applications to the state-of-the-art technical geophysical innovations. The main thrust of the course is towards hydrocarbon, mineral and environmental industries. It has an excellent success rate in job placement after the course.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course commences at the end of September each year and is of twelve months duration. Completion of compulsory and optional modules, following either “environmental” or “hydrocarbon” route is required. They consist of lectures, laboratory practicals and fieldwork, with the last 4 months allocated to individual projects (commonly in collaboration with industrial partners) leading to a dissertation. Seminars, given by students, and the practical reports assess and improve presentation skills and the ability to complete and report on geophysical surveys. A number of invited lectures are given by visitors from industry.

FACILITIES

The Department has a wide range of geophysical surveying equipment which students learn to use during the geophysical field courses. Many industry-standard software packages are taught and are available for project work. Students have their own lecture room / laboratory with en-suite computer facilities. Several other computer clusters are immediately available within the Department for use by MSc students. High-specification Sun and PC workstations, offer interactive seismic reflection processing (ProMAX), GPR processing and 3D Kingdom Suite TM seismic reflection interpretation. All computers are networked to scanners, colour and black & white printers, (including A0), and servers such as Internet and email. Programming and other practicals are taught on the Departmental LINUX workstation cluster. The School has its own thriving gravity and magnetic consultancy, GETECH Group Plc and structural geology consultancy, RDR.
