"I had been working in an NHS Haematology / Transfusion laboratory for three years when I came across the online Biosciences course at NTU.

"I first heard about this degree through the Institute of Biomedical Science website. I was looking for an accredited eLearning course and found this was my favourite because of the specialised syllabus and the ability to carry out the modules at my own pace whatever time of day.

"I read about the bursary award for this course on the NTU website. The bursary application was really straightforward and easy to complete. I had to explain my reasons for applying and how I was suitable for the bursary.

"Without financial assistance I believe that I would have found it very difficult to complete this course over the two years and would perhaps have had to prolong my study to be able to manage the payments. Being awarded the bursary was a huge privilege and it has allowed me to concentrate on the course content instead of worrying about finding the next payment, for which I am extremely grateful.

"The course is highly specific to my line of work and attendance will benefit the department by producing a more knowledgeable and experienced member of staff. This will improve both the quality of service and patient experience as well as ensuring my continuous professional development within the NHS.

"My undergraduate research project was concerned with stem cells and the amount of apoptosis that occurs with overnight storage at 4?C. This has encouraged me to read around the subject of stem cells and I believe these amazing cells have yet to be fully understood. I hope that my postgraduate research project will also give me passion for another subject area.

I hope to be involved with these changes and progress both academically and professionally, with hope of becoming a senior Biomedical Scientist in the near future."

"On completion of my undergraduate studies in Biotechnology, I worked as a research assistant at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. During this time, I became progressively more interested in research into digestive diseases. I decided to pursue postgraduate study to further explore this interest with the aim of gaining new knowledge in the field of bioscience.

"NTU was my first choice for postgraduate study because of its links with industry, and the potential for industrial placements. It has one of the highest employability rates for students upon graduation, and this is without a doubt due to the highly transferable skills that are taught, and the efforts of the employability team. NTU also provides many generous scholarships, easing the burden of postgraduate study.

"Before I came here, I knew that NTU is one of the top new universities in the UK, with the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre being a state-of-the-art biomedical research institution. I also knew that NTU has a vibrant student population, and friendly international community. This clinched my decision to apply here.

"The one-year MSc in Biomedical Science in NTU provides a wide range of modules such as pharmacology, biology of diseases, microbial diagnostics and clinical pathology. Students are free to choose between the different modules, allowing for the MSc to be tailored to career aspirations, whether this be as a biomedical scientist, or as a full-time researcher in academia. Overall, this program gave me the opportunity to expand my breadth of knowledge, learn, and practice new laboratory techniques.

"NTU is particularly appealing to me because it is a top-notch biomedical research institute in the UK, and benefits from extensive collaborations with biopharmaceutical industry. It also places an emphasis on transferable skills, making students more attractive to potential employers. The MSc in biomedical science is also accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), which provides a professional accreditation, and allows interested students to pursue a career as a biomedical scientist.

"Notably, I have gained new knowledge in pharmacology and computational analysis through this course. I recently also began a part-time work placement through NTU. This opportunity not only complements my studies, giving me an opportunity to apply new skills to practical use, but provides me with valuable work experience.
