MSc Finance and Accounting has been designed specifically to develop the knowledge, skills, research interests and career prospects of students who are already working in, or wish to work in, the areas of finance, treasury management or accountancy. A participant on the course with little or no accounting experience will have the opportunity to study modules which will cover this shortfall while graduate members of professional accountancy bodies may concentrate on developing their knowledge of international accounting and aspects of finance relevant to the current market. Graduate members of UK accountancy bodies or overseas equivalents will be entitled to exemptions from two of the core modules, namely, Financial Accounting Policy and Managerial Accounting.

Course Content

As a graduate, you will be provided with a thorough and comprehensive grasp of the principles and applications of finance and accounting, together with the technical and conceptual skills necessary to integrate theory with practice.

Core modules

* Financial Accounting Policy
* International Risk Management
* Managerial Accounting
* Modern Finance
* Research Methods
* Project

Choose two from:

* Data Analysis
* Financial Derivatives
* Financial Information Systems
* Financial Strategy
* Forecasting Financial Markets
* International Financial Reporting
* Financial Markets and Institutions
* Or a free choice option module may be taken at the course leader's discretion

Professional recognition
MSc Finance and Accounting gives exemption from six papers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) examinations. Graduate members of any UK professional accountancy body (or overseas equivalent) will be given exemption from two of the core modules - Financial Accounting Policy and Managerial Accounting.
Career paths

These finance programmes lead to a career in accounting, finance, banking or general management, with some graduates entering a 'Big 4' accountancy firm.

Entry requirements

* You should normally hold a first degree from a recognised UK institution (minimum Lower Second), or international equivalent in accounting, business or economics or another discipline with a significant content of quantitative methods.
* Alternatively for the MSc Finance and Accounting you may hold membership of any UK professional accountancy body or international equivalent.
* For holders of non-UK degrees please visit the International Qualifications page to check acceptability.
* You do not require prior knowledge of finance, but should have an expertise in mathematics and statistics. The course is also open to those from other disciplines in which quantitative methods form a significant part.
* Exceptionally, non-graduates may also be considered, provided they can show evidence of extensive work experience in the field.
* You need to demonstrate that you have the commitment to benefit from and contribute to the course, as well as the ability to pass the variety of modules which make up the course.
* In addition, it is essential that you speak, write and comprehend English fluently. Hence, if English is not your mother tongue or you have not recently studied or worked in an English environment, you are normally required to have passed IELTS (or any other recognised English language test of the same standard) with a minimum score of 6.5.
* Whenever it is considered appropriate, overseas students are strongly encouraged to attend the English for Academic Purposes module, which is offered without charge by Westminster Business School.
