This programme provides graduates and public health professionals with the academic background required for leadership and management roles, with a strong emphasis on the prevention and control of disease, and the broader determinants of health.

The Public Health MPH was introduced at King’s in 2003 to satisfy the need for a modern generic public health master’s programme aimed at assisting public health professionals to prepare for management and leadership roles. The programme has a strong emphasis on mainstream public health issues such as epidemiology and the prevention and control of disease. Modules are also available in Toxicology and Environmental Epidemiology to better meet the needs of those working in health protection and environmental health.

The orientation is towards the developed world and most subjects are taught in a UK context, although many overseas students have successfully completed the programme.

Distinctive features

• We make extensive use of visiting lecturers from local Primary Care Trusts and central government agencies such as the Health Protection Agency and the Department of Health.

• Our teaching methods are varied and include interactive seminars and workshops, project work, computer-based and problem solving exercises, individual and group oral presentations and small group work.

• We welcome students from a broad range of backgrounds, including those with medical and non-medical qualifications and experience.

• We draw upon experts from internationally recognised centres of excellence in four King’s Schools: Biomedical & Health Sciences, the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery, Medicine and Social Science & Public Policy.

• The student body is particularly diverse, with representatives from every continent.

Is this the right programme for you?
The programme aims to provide individuals with the academic background required for leadership roles in public health. It is aimed at anyone who works, or who intends to work, in an organisation which promotes public health or which has public health responsibilities. This will include medical practitioners, environmental health practitioners, pharmacists, health visitors, midwives, nurses, nutritionists and dieticians, dentists, and many other personnel from central and local government, regulatory agencies, the water and waste industries, health networks and partnerships and community and voluntary groups.

Career prospects
Our graduates have gone on to key roles in local, national and international government agencies, NGOs and charitable and community organisations concerned with public health. Job titles of recent graduates include: Public Health Specialist, Head of Public Health Intelligence, Health Partnership Programme Manager, Epidemiologist and Antenatal Screening Co-ordinator. Other students have gone on to pursue academic careers.
