BHSAI, INTSM, HE Equine Science lecturer. HND and Foundation Degree Course Manager, Equine Practical Co-ordinator, now studying for PhD Aberystwyth University.

I chose the MSc at Aberystwyth as after my undergraduate course I felt that it would give me a competitive edge when looking for employment later on. I also felt that it would be a good opportunity to further my research skills and experience.

The course itself was a fantastic experience that not only helped me develop professional skills but also make contacts which have been invaluable. The staff at Aberystwyth provided enthusiasm and a wealth of experience which made it a reallyenjoyable year. The qualification, combined with BHS qualifications, without doubt helped me to secure my previous role as senior lecturer to HE students on a variety of subjects ranging from first year anatomy and physiology to final year managing equine health. I am now studying for my PhD at Aberystwyth University.

Manager and Inspector for the Korean Racing Authority

My home is Korea and so it was hard for me to find information on Equine courses, I compared courses in Britain with those in the US. I found the information about British courses through the web page of British Council in Korea. After I found that there were a few universities specialising in Equine across the UK, I started investigating which institute is best for me. I looked at things such as modules, location, tuition fee, accommodation properties etc. I concluded that Aberystwyth is the best place to study Equine Science, Aberystwyth town has a high percentage of students so I thought the town would be quite suitable for students, also the modules on the course were quite tempting especially equine behaviour and reproduction.

I really enjoyed being in Aberystwyth, I loved the fact that I could go to the beach whenever I felt stuck during study, and even walk up Constitution hill, which was really refreshing and gave me strength to start my work again. I found the people in Aberystwyth to be very kind to foreigners and having Chinese/Japanese restaurants helped me, though there was no Korean restaurant yet.

I am now back in Korea working for the Korean Racing Authority (KRA) where I approve farmers to enter KRA training centre at Jangsoo to cover their mares by KRA stallions. I inspect the stud farms which have the broodmares covered by KRA stallions during breeding season. I translate the latest news, magazines, books from abroad to let the trainers know how to break the horses with the up-to-date methods. I introduce institutes related to equine science and also horse industry in UK to KRA and also to other trainers and horsemen. I support the yearling sales in the KRA training centre at Jangsu.

If I have any chance to get back to study in foreign country, I definitely would go back to UK, especially Aberystwyth University as it's just perfect place to be a student!

Director of the Equestrian Logistic Service, Oman Royal Cavalry

’You will be proud of yourself’.
A statement said by the coordinator MSc in Equine Science, Dr. Morel, which targeted all my power to rise to the real challenge posed by the course as I had a long gap from studies after my BSc (1999/2004). I still remember the MSc of Equine Science as a world cup of flat race, but it was for a whole year instead of two to three minutes. That kept me holding my breath until the last second when we got the final grades.

However, I managed to excel at the end and I have been extremely proud of myself. I joined the MSc of Equine Science in 2013/2014 and used my dissertation as an opportunity to investigate beetroot to be as fiber source in the horse diet .Throughout the course, I have learned and developed many scientific skills especially in Equine Nutrition. Nowadays, I count my MSc as my knowledge backbone, which requires being active to be fit and build more muscles (targeted knowledge). I work now with Oman Royal Cavalry as Director of the Equestrian Logistic Service and I am responsible for more than a thousand horses, in most equestrian disciplines: including flat race, endurance, beauty and breeding stud.

Therefore, I can strongly say that “ I am proud of myself”

Equine thermography research scientist, author and owner of company “Equine Massage - Maria Soroko”

My interest in equine research started during my Equine Masters degree studies at Aberystwyth University 7 years ago. This course helped me in my further career working with horses. My Masters dissertation indicated my interest in the application of thermography in sport and racehorses and also in their rehabilitation. After MSc studies I achieved qualifications as an Equine Body Worker in sport massage and in remedial therapy. My skills and experience in equine physiotherapy were obtained both in Europe and Australia.

To help further improve my research knowledge I completed PhD studies within the Department of Horse Breeding and Equestrian Studies of Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. My PhD research concerned the effect of long-term training on racehorses’ body surface temperature changes.

After completing my studies I started to run my own business “Equine Massage - Maria Soroko”, offering equine rehabilitation and thermography services, cooperating with veterinarians, horse breeders and trainers. I also run professional courses and workshops associated with horse rehabilitation and the application of thermography in veterinary and sports medicine.

I also conduct research on the application of thermography in sport and racing horses, authoring numerous original publications and overview papers. I’m also the author of the book entitled “Equine thermography in practice”, which describes the practical application of thermography in equine veterinary medicine and rehabilitation.

I recommend the MSc course to anyone who wants to work with horses in their future career.
