MSc Accounting & Finance

This programme provides students with a solid foundation and understanding of the accounting and finance principles. It has been designed for graduates from any academic discipline who wish to become senior business managers or seek a career in accounting, financial management, banking and financial services.

The taught modules will give you a clear understanding of the joint role of accounting and finance in ensuring successful operations in a range of business settings, including financial, non-financial and public sector organisations and for providing information to interested parties.

Professional exemptions

Successful completion of this programme leads to exemptions from professional accountancy bodies the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). You will still need to secure professional training and complete further exams in order to become fully qualified in accountancy, but these exemptions demonstrate to future employers your commitment and potential to complete sector qualifications. In addition to your Aston degree, you will have the opportunity to participate in our international study exchange programme. Studying with one of our partner institutions, the programme will enhance your international experience and communication skills, preparing you for a career in the international business environment.

Core Modules

• Management Accounting (taught over two terms)
• Business Finance
• International Finance
• Financial Analysis
• Sustainability Accounting & Accountability

The programme then concludes with a financial reporting project to be completed during the summer. The taught modules are assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework. The taught element of the programme is complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a 60 credit project.

Course director

Dr Florian Gebreiter joined Aston Business School as a lecturer in September 2011, after completing a PhD in Accounting at the London School of Economics. His principal research interests are in the field of health service accounting research. In this context, he uses historical methods to examine the relationship between hospital accounting and a range of issues including changing conceptions of clinical medicine and concerns for the cost of healthcare. More recently, he has also developed an interest in the graduate recruitment practices of accounting firms and their role in the professional and organisational socialisation of accountants.

This programme is designed for candidates wishing to acquire expertise in both accounting and finance, while developing the necessary skills for senior management roles in those areas. This programme is also suitable for those wishing to pursue more advanced studies, such as a PhD.
