This course produces Health and Safety Practitioners who will be able to identify, assess and solve health, safety and environmental problems which arise in the workplace through the principles of good management. You will enhance your knowledge of the technical subject areas through an extension into managing Health and Safety with due consideration to sustainable economic development of business and the environment.

If you successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) element of the course (120 out of 180 credits) and have appropriate experience, you will be able to apply for graduate membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety
and Health (IOSH). Successful completion of the dissertation (MSc) will enable you to apply for chartered membership of IOSH, using the MSc dissertation as
your Skills Development Portfolio (SDP), which is a requirement for the Initial Professional Development (IPD) Scheme. This is an essential qualification for
safety practitioners who need to manage safety and integrate the demands of corporate development and legislation.

The course has been developed with the expertise of staff in the Division, which has been recognised by the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) as a Centre of Excellence for Quality in Education.

Course content
You will complete six modules and a dissertation:
• Business Law
• Research Methods and Professional Development
• Corporate Management Systems
• Environmental Management
• Workplace Evaluation and Control
• Health and Safety Management
How you will study
Full-time students spend 12-14 hours per week in lectures, seminars and tutorials. Modules are studied in blocks on two days a week, so that two modules are completed every nine weeks. For part-time students the commitment is around six to eight hours on one day per week, with one module completed every nine weeks. For each module you will usually have to complete two assignments based on case studies or workplace scenarios, and an examination. There will be group work, recommended reading and tutorials each week. Your final dissertation will be based in industry.
Assessment is through a balance of examinations and assignments.

Career potential
Safety, health and environmental issues have significant implications for organisations and are becoming increasingly important. Employment prospects are excellent, particularly as employers value the skills and
