What’s it like to study a Masters in Karlsruhe?

Karlsruhe was founded relatively recently, in 1715, by Charles III William, the Margrave (military governor and commander) of the territory of Baden. Its name actually translates as ‘Charles’s Repose’ - a reference to a dream Charles William is said to have had, prompting him to found the city (we’re certain his vision included lots of international postgraduate students).

Because of this relatively modern establishment, Karlsruhe was carefully planned and this is still visible in the layout of its streets and buildings, which radiate out from the central Karlsruhe Palace. The result is attractive and unique, but modern town-planning students studying a Masters in Karlsruhe should probably refrain from basing their designs exclusively on nocturnal visions.

Postgraduate students in Karlsruhe have the experience of living and studying in a unique city that still retains much of its original radial layout and a number of attractive buildings and monuments dating back to its founding in the 18th century.

The city also hosts various festivals and events and offers excellent transport links to other parts of Germany and nearby France.

The oldest university in Karlsruhe is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the first technical university to be established in Germany upon its founding in 1825. It is usually ranked within the global top 150 universities, but is particularly well regarded in Engineering and Natural Sciences subject areas.

The city’s other universities are relatively small and tend to focus on particular areas of expertise. They include the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe (one of Germany’s smallest universities with around 300 students) and the Karlshochschule International University, a specialist international business school.
