Bremen is an attractive, vibrant city in northwest Germany, situated on the river Weser, not far from the North Sea coast. The city is an important academic hub, with several universities and important German research institutes.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Bremen?

Originally an important trading port as part of the Hanseatic League, Bremen later became a significant manufacturing centre and still features a number of aeronautic and automotive assembly facilities. Other important local businesses include the Beck’s Brewery, which produces and exports internationally popular beers.

Bremen is also famous for its association with the popular fairy-tale ‘The Musicians of Bremen’, in which a group of farm animals travel together towards the city. A statue celebrating the tale was constructed in Bremen city centre in 1953 and is popularly held to bring good luck to those who rub the animals’ hooves (unfortunately, reports of its ability to affect Masters coursework results are unconfirmed).

Postgraduate students in Bremen live and study in a historic German city with access to a wide range of higher education institutions. As well as the city’s many monuments and churches, its landmarks and attractions include one of the largest wine cellars in Germany, which stores some of the oldest vintages in the world (one particular barrel dates back to 1653). Bremen is also known as a passionate football city, with SV Werder Bremen winning the German league as recently as 2004. Attending a match at the Weserstadion is a great way to experience the famously raucous atmosphere of a Bundesliga game.

Beyond Bremen itself lie opportunities to visit other university cities in Northern Germany, such as Hamburg, or travel further afield to neighbouring Denmark and the Netherlands.

Universities in Bremen

Bremen’s largest higher education institution is the University of Bremen, founded in 1971. The city is also home to two universities of applied sciences and a selection of specialist research centres, most of which take advantage of the city’s location to focus on marine sciences and related topics.

Private universities in Bremen include Jacobs University Bremen, which offers English-language programmes catering to international students.
